Is it hard to build a good old American V8 to 1 or 1.1 hp/cui flywheel naturally aspirated? Are there any designs that disqualify from the beginning because of inherent flaws? Are there any designs that disqualify for further power increases through forced induction or nitrous because of inherent flaws?

>>
>>16597791
Is it hard? No. All but like,5 or 6 of Chevy's crate engines are more than 1HP/CI.

It would be a pain to add forced induction after you've already built it up to be decently powerful and N/A, since you'd have to run high-comp shit.
>>
>>16597801
What about dumping nitrous into the thing until the desired power output once the internals are strengthened?
>>
>>16597791
I mean if you build an 11.5 to 1 screamer that revs to the moon them you put a bar of boost on it you're going to have a bad time without race gas all the time
>>
>>16597823
What's your power goals and what engine? Do you value driveability? Are you ok with fucking up your rings something fierce
>>
>>16597823
engine masters i think got 600hp(?) out of an internally stock 305 sbc by just fogging the everliving fuck out of it with nitrous.

it wasn't until the 700hp mark or something that the thing blew up. I'd have to watch the episode again.

Random anon from last thread, as previously stated, got my hands on a 67' Buick Special, was thinking of dropping an LM7 into it.

Though, got a few engine options but the LM7 seems like by far the best choice.
Anyone encountered any issues with dropping a modern LSx into an A-body besides the usual engine mounts?
>>

This is true, but it doesn't take into account vacuum.

>>
>>16597946
Friends, are you able to hook up an ecu, soak controller and plumb a fuel system or are you going to convert to carb. One is easier than the other.
>>
>>16597881
I'm just hypothetically thinking something through here. Doubt I'll ever build it, just wanna know if it's possible. Pontiac 400. 400-450 hp on gas. 600-650 hp on nitrous.
>>
>>16597977
Anything is possible with enough money
>>
>>16597962
No problem with hooking it up, I was more wondering if anyone ran into the issue of having to bash in a firewall or frame clearance issues on A bodies.
>>
>>16597977
That being said a 400hp poncho 400 isn't at all unreasonable. Good heads decent compression ratio and a good can will net you that
>>
>>16598020
But can it take a 200 shot of nitrous on top?
>>
>>16598088
If you build it with the proper tolerances in the rings, and you have the correct fuel controllers and you have something that will retard timing then yeah.

The sauce hurts your motor though famalam

I don't really know if this is appropriate to ask here but I was wondering if I could get your guys' opinions on what car I should get on a 15k - 25k budget.
I'm pretty young and love classic muscle cars and working on them but I'm not sure on what I should buy. I've been looking at cars for a while and I've come up with three that I like aesthetically and I would like to have your opinions on them. (see fig. a)
Also the car I buy will be kept with me most likely till I kick it. I'll be modding it over the years and hopefully pass it on to my kids one day. Hopefully this didn't sound like blog posting.

The 260 is literally just a Windsor. They were good enough for Shelby.
>>
>>16603260

Also Shelby only used the 260 because the 289 wasn't out yet
>>
>>16603148
What ya got under the hood in that beast?
>>
>>16603267
Yeah but believe it or not but not everyone has an obbsession with big power numbers. If someone wants to build a 260 more power to them because there needs to be more diversity in engine choice
>>
>>16603293
Your not going to build "big or numbers" with a 289. I get your point, and being a special snowflake is nice and all, but if you just wanted to do that throw a flathead in the, which would also be dumb.

There's a benefit to trying something new, but there's no benefit to suffering for the sake of suffering.

Now if you just happen to have a 260, power to you. But to seek out one I don't get it
>>
>>16603332
Doesn't change the fact that some people want what was original to the car and still have a go at building the engine

You forgot the Delorean, Bricklin, Checker Aerobus, Hudson, Panhard. From what I've read the guy liked the more unusual stuff, hence the massive amount of Studebakers. But there normal stuff like a '57 Chevrolet, '57 Thunderbird, Charger, Barracuda, even a 3rd gen Camero as well.
>>
>>16604812
No it isn't.

I honestly don't understand your point. I've started that the 260 is fine if it came with the car, but why take the engine out of the car to modify a 260 when you can build literally any other Windsor. There's a reason Carroll didn't keep scrounging for the 260s, she eventually decided that the 289 wasn't enough either...

>>
>>16605171
That's because you're a boomer-tier retard who thinks something should have whatever the hot meme engine is.
>>
>>16605182
I think if you're modifying a vehicle like these, you should put the most cost effective, bang for your buck engine in there that you can.

If I could will it, id have every Ford rod powered by some 427 aluminum blocked Windsor stroker with heads that flow like the Nile. But that's just not possible for everyone
>>
>>16605228
You claim to be a classic car enthusiast but here you are with 0 respect for vintage builds or people going against the grain. You would unironically 455 swap a 49 Olds 88 instead of building the 303 You would unironically 454 swap a Power Pack '56 Bel-Air instead of building the 265. You would unironically LS swap a 421 Catalina 2+2 instead of building the 421.
>>
>>16605307
This, kkk always suggests cookie cutter builds because he doesn't know shit about anything else.
>>
>>16605307
I'd do a 303. I wouldn't swap a super duty, but you've got to think about the vehicle. Preservation is a hell of a thing, but some vehicles like a 260 powered falcon, well there's nothing significant about that as is. Fuck em

I bought a '73 Nova SS, but the original VIN tag is gone and replaced with one that doesn't even match an old Chevy. Don't know if it was a state-issued replacement or what.

not a bad looking body there. I'd say the best way you could go about this is bifrucate your process a bit.

I wouldn't bother trying to solve the engine while it is in the car, I'd just take it all out and put it up on a stand, and start your assesment / rebuild there.

If the engine turns out to be bunked, then you make the call as to wether you're looking for engine parts, new engine, or something from a different car.

I don't think VW engine is a good candidate due to its form factor. I'd lean more towards a japanese 4 banger if you want simple and sane, (seen a toyota truck motor put to good use that way)

Or if you want to go insane, what about a rover small block v8 (or a buick 215 if you can find one)

Fuel pump, timing
>>
>>16628164
I've been messing around with the timing a lot. Though I'm not sure if I should advance it or retard it. Manual has 7 deg of initial timing, however if I push it too far it back fires through the carbs.
Fuel pump was replaced and the float bowls should be full. Not sure if it's a problem with the carbs though because I did drive the car home, only issue was that it would spit through the carbs when I let the revs drop, pulled it out but forgot to mark the position.
>>
>>16628176
Sounds like timing to me. Pull the #1 cylinder plug and crank the engine over with a socket wrench on the spark plug until it's at TDC, then just see if the rotor is pointing directly at #1 cylinder on the distributor cap, that will rule out timing at least.
Do you know if the floats are properly adjusted? or is the carburetor fairly new?
>>
>>16627824
Flow is where power or efficiency is determined, usually hand in hand

This is true. It's a cool fucking engine.

>>16628217

>>
>>16628262
Eh, not really needed. a screwdriver works to. doesn't need to be anything fancy. You can tell when the piston get's to TDC easily.
I don't suppose you have another Carburetor, or even know someone with another carbuetor that you could try, to rule out carb problems?
>>
>>16628255
There's only so much you can change. The fundamental architecture has an ass backwards intake set up and a really small combustion chamber. That, and the turbulent runner design don't help.

not really, only one. I haven't had the car running and outside much, and I need to finish the paint so it actually looks good

well, except for one.

This is what the wiring looked like when I first got the car. It was basically built by a carpenter. I ripped every wire out and started all over again, and I didn't done use no diagrams, hah!

Its a great car to drive. At least, the pinto version is. Its amazingly light, my guess is 1500 lbs at most. She just wants to go forward. I haven't yet figured out how fast she'll go but probably the absolute limit is shy of 100 somewhere.

I mean, also in a way these things are pretty much absolutely terrible in every way, and you have to be a small guy or gal to comfortably drive it. I'm 5'7 and I basically am at the upper limit of 'working properly' in the car interior, so that's worth being mindful of. The whole car shakes, quakes, shudders and shimmies also, its just the way the thing is made. I'd like to think the body on mine is pretty solidly well built and all that, but it still just flexes so damn much that with the engine and the road and all that, you just expect your mirrors to be just about completely useless.

Pedal placement is pretty bad also, the brake pedal especially is basically too low, the pedal itself is where the heel of my shoe is and I don't know how to change that because it appears to be standard to the design. Hah...
>>
>>16628332
Well I redid the timing.
I found some marks that were left by the previous owner on the balancer.
Lined it up and set the 1st spark plug. When I turn it over it sounds like the engine is firing without having to pour fuel down the runners.
Right now I think the biggest issue is that the float bowls are not actually fueled up.
I can see vapor escaping from the vent tube on the front carb, however the rear carb does not.
I'll fill up my gas can tomorrow and add more fuel to the gas tank because I'm sure it's low.
The tank is 85L, and the gas can is 5L. Pretty sure there's air in the fuel system as the fuel pressure gauge wavers quite a lot.

>>
>>16630553
Well equal length intake is nice, but the restriction is in the head design itself. Its not like the LS has multi length intake runners.

You have to look at it historically though. It was a big improvement compared to the Flathead, and the FE and Windsor where an improvement in that.
>>
So I'm repainting my 1970 dodge challenger this upcoming week. I've prepped most of the body, just needs to be checked over by the body man and then primed and painted.

I did have to do 3 patch panels on the car where there were rust bubbles. While doing a patch, I noticed the front fender had fill in it. I ended up sanding some paint away and found that there was more than I initially thought. The car was side swiped many years ago and I was aware there was some fill in it but It's about a half inch thick right above the wheel well. The filled area hasn't cracked or warped in 15 odd years and it's over a large surface, about 13 inches across the fender hump.

I also want to keep this original fender as reproductions don't fit as nicely.

Do you guys think it'll be fine to leave it?

I was going through my old road and track magazines, and I stumbled across this story I neglected as a kid. A great story about Hank Williams last ride, recreated by one of my absolute favorite writers that I've experienced. This is the exact opposite of jalopnik tier nonsense.

make it all about the motor, and not about the frame.

i'd look at rust as weight reduction and go faster until it just simply won't hold up and is FUBAR

It depends on how far you're going with the car, if it's just a rough project you're throwing together, I'd just lay some steel over the perforated spots and epoxy glue it in place.

If you're actually stuffing money into it and want a nicely restored vehicle, all of that needs to be cut out and replaced. Considering that you're putting the hours into stripping the entire interior, I'd say replace them. This is your chance.

Also take it down to an alignment shop and make sure the frame isn't bent / rotten before you make a big investment in the car.

Work was so fucking slow today, all we really did was work on our own cars.
I got the replacement turn signal housing in, put the rest of my dash back together from the heater core replacement.
Fucked around with the power antenna motor, it's dead as fuck it seems.
New bulbs in the cornering lamps, finally. Greased the front end then fixed an exhaust leak on my right downpipe.

Next on the list will be pulling the door panels off and greasing all of the window regulators and door locks with some sweet, sweet Sil-glyde and replacing the plastic push tabs in the door panels themselves

>Work was so fucking slow today

Exact opposite here in NJ. Snow storm hit today so I spent 11 hours in a plow truck doing conmercial snow plowing.
>>
>>16639263
Work was slow due to the snow we're getting. Had a snowstorm overnight and got 9 inches or so.
No one's really leaving their houses, all we had was a car come in with the wipers not working and then a tire rotation.
>>
>>16639287
I guess that's typical for most places. You work on what's already there or wait for something to show during the storm. Most garages aren't also commercial plow contractors as well. We only had 1 tractor break down, blew a hydraulic hose, but 20 min at the shop and we had a new hose made and it was back out plowing.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am not trying to make it into a showpiece by any means, just trying to get it back on the road and be safe. Was planning on cutting out all around that brace then weld sheet metal over and buy new braces and weld them in. Also, there is a rust hole at pic related that we need to fix, can i just box it in and be good? Pulled the 455 because it was seized and am plannin on putting the original 350 back in it

Does anybody know what the specific name if this vacuum valve is?
It's for manually opening the headlight covers without turning the lights on, on Ford cars.
I've been trying to find it on google and rockauto, summit racing. Can't find it though
