the only Corolla XRS's (05-06) I can find in my area are over 200k km mileage

How cool is that 2ZZ-GE engine anyways? Sounds fun high-revving but not so much the idea of paying the corolla tax for one when, given the nature of high revving, it's might not last as long as other corollas.

but honestly, the idea of just getting an 09-11 corolla xrs is tempting for me too since it's FWD either way anyways.

It's a pretty huge sand pit owned by a company that supports ISIS. Every now and then you have to run from the cops because you're trespassing there, but there isn't a single place like this anywhere else around here so no one really cares about the risk. They keep bulldozing all the entrances though so dirt bikes, snowmobiles, quads, and shitboxes can get in.
>>
>>16595766
They should just make that land an off roading field and have an entrance fee to make some money. I don't see why more prime do that. Getting lawsuits probably has something to do with it

The company is LaFarge, and from what I can tell they like to buy up property like this and just sit on it. I swear half of the aggregate land they own isn't even used. If definitely does have something to do with lawsuits. Making it a legal place has always been a popular idea, and there's a huge place just east of there that does exactly that, but you can't bring trucks or cars in. There used to be a really cool place in the same area to legally offroad anything but there's some kind of rare plant there so its a conservation area. and yet people wonder why I'd rather have a third gen Firebird project rather than a 4x4 project.

>Friend and I go into the pits about an hour and a half before sunset to fuck around with an air gun

>turn around only to see a Police Tahoe driving down the unopened road about 100 feet away from us
>helicopter is flying a couple hundred feet above us blowing sand in my eyes
>a dirt biker had to get airlifted out
>about a dozen cops are in the pits now
>we have to walk through the surrounding woods in complete darkness over the next hour to avoid trespassing tickets, and whatever bullshit would come from having an air gun with us

Next is rust repair. I'm going to try and do the very small by myself and have a pro do the real big stuff. I've been looking for a whole new drivers door along with the kouki tail lights and wing but no luck.

Posting my Mr2 and hoping you guys can give me some advice. I daily my Mr2 and I have noticed that some days when going highway speeds (60-75 mph) if i hit the throttle in any way, the whole car will kinda shake and hesitate. It also feels like the engine is down on power when it does this. The weird thing is that this is not a constant, the car only really does it for the first 10-15 minutes of interstate driving, after that it calms down and feels like the engine gains some power back. I replaced the air filter already to see if that would help, it has not. Any other suggestions? Spark plugs? Fuel filter? Injectors?

Had my car back for one day and the fucking headgasket blew again. Stock boost nothing done but an exhaust. Torque on the headbolts was 87ft lbs. Mechanic says he's gonna "make it right" replace the headgasket and throw Arps in there but still. One day. Not even 24 hours. I've driven it three times since I got it back.
What could have happened? Where did it go so wrong?
Right after I got it back I put gas in it and reset the trip. 87km is how far I made it. Fuck...

I can't think of another toyota/lexus to go for except the LS400.

I've owned:
'89 Camry
'87 MR2
'94 Celica

The last two were stick shift, and I'd like another stick shift car. I'd also like something with decent storage space, good road presence, not dog shit slow, and comfortable.

Anyone have any ideas? Budget is $3K.
>>
>>16609559

>>16609567
Yes, I am in NYC.

The JZA model?

Doesn't that one have a head gasket issue where something wasn't tightened down to spec?
>>
>>16609584
Yeah. It's actually the meaning usdm 7mgte.
the 1j version is the JZA70. replace the headgasket or find one that's been replaced and tighten to 85 ft-lbs and you're solid. just a full exhaust exhaust and you're at 280ish horse. 6.5 to 60.
>>
>>16609603
Thanks. Obviously I'll have to do my own research, but is this "replace the head gasket" thing as much of a meme as "bolts right in?" Is it really that easy to change a head gasket on one of these?

Well, the insurance company totaled my box. Got 3500 for it. Probably couldve gotten more prior to the crash but oh well.

OP, could you use this picture for the collage and just gray it out since I no longer have it? I don't have any pictures with proof of ownership with the box, but I'm going to post my new tC with proof of ownership and the pictures taken in the same area.

3500 is really good i think. i just bought mine this week for 2500
>>
>>16612979
Yeah it isn't bad, but they said they got the 3500 price from the base model, mine wasn't a base model.

My friend has a box and I sold him the Alloy OEM wheels on mine, and put his wheels with the plastic hub caps on mine before I gave it to the insurance company. If they were paying for a base model they were getting base model features. Also took out the third brakelight that was custom from ozinium and ran me like $100, took the light covers and grill which were like $150, and I took off the TRD intake and put the stock one back. And I took out the OEM floor mats that I bought when I got the box and were still in perfect condition. And I popped the fog lights out. So gonna sell all the extra stuff and hopefully make some extra cash since most of it isn't available anymore.

He's gonna fix it, no labour charge. I bought ARP's before I decided to go new motor, so I'm gonna do the same.
I had him remove the valve covers to check the spec and put some gaskets in for me and he said they were all already tightened so I just don't know.
>>
>>16617271
Ok that's fine then. Just really inconvenient to have it in the shop. Kinda saw it coming though lol
>>
>>16617277
It was stock though. ;_;
Just an exhaust and an intake. I decided to leave the boost controller off until the summer when I could consider building the old motor.
>>
>>16617281
Exhaust and intake adds power. That hg was probably at its last legs too. They usually blow up at 75k miles or 120k km.
How much miles on the new engine?
>>
>>16617304
60k km. I know the exhaust adds power, but damn. I just meant I wasn't pushing it with the boost controller or doing anything crazy.

I guess sitting in a warehouse hurts.
>>
>>16617311
Maybe the PO beat the crap out of it. Ayy least yours will be running sooner than mine. I'm planning to fix it in spring break. I just hope the low will be 50℉ at least
>>
>>16617324
I guess. I'm just shaken to my very core right now. two bhg's in a month has me questioning life. Going to ask the mechanic how much extra to deck the head and put a mhg in there.
I now have an extra 7m though. No idea what to do with it. I could try tearing that down by myself in the summer to build it and go for big power, or attempt to stick it in something else. or maybe I'll try harder to sell it. only 160km on that one with a new turbo.

H-hi /tg/

I have a 2012 Corolla LE, when I was younger I was really into cars (as most young guys in highschool were) but I kind of fell out of it by time I was a senior. Fast forward 10 years and I want to -lightly- get back into caring for my vehicle more than just 'this is what I use to get from point a to point b'.

however I am completely lost; I know little about vehicles, what would be worth getting done to my car, what's cringey etc. I am not trying to street race or anything, but am interested in making my car a bit of a project and keeping it nice.

What is the entry level I should be aiming for to get done and to do (beyond common sense stuff such as oil changes, wash, etc., etc)?

Thanks friends
>>
>>16606269

If you have to question any of those things they should have already been done. Air flow sensors and vacuum is very important too. The basics of taking care of a car. I learned these all well with my first turbo car.

Well, we went on a heavy midnight touge run and through big sweeping corners, it's great. we were keeping up with a Matrix XRS and he said it *felt* about as good as his Dads e36 M3. They're built for highway executive cruising so if you wanna drive everywhere at 90mph you're golden.

Not sure exactly how many miles it has but I know it's a lot. the cluster led's burn out so the previous owner changed it. however, turns out the previous owner was my mechanic through random luck so we found out all the miles were highway from a guy who used to make weekly 6hr trips across the US. enough tot he point where the car has a really expensive radar system embedded in the cluster you you can't see it.
Only real repair that it's needed was the radiator needed to be replaced. got a huge crack on it one day. probably from being old as hell and plastic.

Anyone here set the set ignition timing on a 5MGE?
I pulled the head on my supra and reassembled it following the book as much as possible. When I insert the distributor it seems like it's a tooth off.
I'm supposed to set the crank to 0 degrees then jump the car in diag mode and set it to 10 BTDC
But I can't get the car running on its own, like I set with the dizzy off a tooth deal, fully adjusted I can get the car to run rough if I keep my foot on the gas.
The intake cam has the dowel pin that the gear pulley sits on but is it possible to misalign the cam gear even with the gear pulley seemingly correct?
sorry if i'm making no sense I just need the car running again.

Ayy, Night Wave represent

>>16617261

My 98 400 has 190K+ miles. Two common issues you need to look out for is the lights/needles dying out on the cluster and the power steering leaking. Most SC owners do have a power steering leak, especially the 400 ones. In the long term, the 1UZ is more reliable than the 2JZ but that doesn't mean the 2JZ is weak by any means.

Recently my cluster went out and just replaced it with a junkyard one. I have a small power steering leak but it's no big deal, just have to top it off a bit every 2 weeks or so. Other than that it's been a reliable car to me. If the car you're looking for has a major power steering leak, then chances are your alternator is going to die out really soon, so either fix that leak or get ready to change your alternator.

Overall, it's a great car. Really fun to drive, has nice amount of power too, the handling could be better but I think it's due to softer suspension parts which can be made better if you get polyurethane bushings and lower the height. It's a car on the heavy side, you can feel the weight on tight turns but it's not boaty like the LS400. The aftermarket is so and so, suspension parts and performance parts (2JZ) can be bought from the Supra MK4. The 1UZ lacks in the mods department compared to the 2JZ but lately it's been getting popular, so I'm looking forward to more performance.

If you're looking to build the car from ground up for purely a performance aspect, I suggest you look at the SC300. If that doesn't concern you much, go for the SC400, it has more power out of the box. Now if you can find a 98-00 SC400, go for that. The increase in HP, Torque and a new 5 speed transmission certainly revives the car that it can compete/stick with newer cars on the road.

Coming from a Lexus ES350, the newest (2017) Camry sport trim is so much more capable in terms of handling and grip.

Maybe I just don't know what's out there cuz I've never driven a meme autist sportsmobile like an 86 or Miata etc. but the newest Camries are underrated for "fun" driving.

They have rev-matching on the automatics (lolercunt) and a stiff ass suspension that bottoms out over speed bumps, that's how hard Toyota is trying to be "sport". Even if it ain't there yet, it's fun.

Some small progress: Replaced a shoddy aluminum exhaust heat cover (tied with some steel wire to the exhaust) with a proper part from technotoytuning to protect the distributor from exhaust heat. Also got brand new smoked side blinkers.

Also prepping to do an LSD rebuild, got the kit from T3 as well, to do a 60% limited slip rebuild of the OEM LSD.

And a TRD radiator cap for shits and giggles. Looks more fresh than the DriveJoy cap that came with the car.

Catch can tubes are literal garden hoses right now, so I'll get something fresh looking for those too, and might replace the shoddy looking random unbranded front strut tower bar with a proper Cusco one.

Any opinions on cams and pistons setup?

Will take a comparison photo next time I can get to the car (the shed is one village over, so can't get there that easily after work).

Got the parts from here: https://technotoytuning.com/
They have a bunch of other really interesting things, but most other stuff I'd want from there is already done with the car. TRD suspension, Cusco stabilizers and polyurethane bushings all around. I'm pretty sure the exhaust is Fujitsubo LegalisR with the W-tip muffler, but haven't found any markings yet.

As I want to preserve an OEM+ style, all mods will be low-key or invisible like cams and pistons, some other details in the engine bay and so on.

Really excited about bringing it to the first meetup for Japanese cars in Switzerland on May 17. Upholstery should be ready by then as well.

After watching some videos I came to the same conclusion! Glad to know I am not too dumb.

Where does one go to get non-repair work done? Would I go to the toyota dealership I got my car, or like firestone/pepboys? I was also thinking of getting my car painted from silver to white, but most places I see makes it sound like they only paint for 'repair services'.

Sorry for my idiotic questions, I am just such a dumb nub at this stuff I don't know where to begin. Please accept this image of minmei as compensation.
>>
>>16628385
If you want to get back into cars, you should be doing the work yourself. I wouldn't bother with painting it.

Painting your car to have the same OEM quality will cost you a decent amount.

To make it look like showcar quality, it will require a lot of handy work and might as well learn that before you work on the new paint.

Full 2.5" straight pipe with headers, proper ram air intake slightly advanced timing.
stage 1 clutch, and 2010 civic wheels ebay coil overs.
Dyno'd at 108 at the wheels.
Our theory is it has more to due with the clutch, because 3 more hp than factory "crank" at the wheels isn't much improvement but he admits to feeling no difference. What did more for the car is coilovers and slightly wider tires.
This is a corolla though and he did this because he was bored.

Can /tg/ tell me about this truck? I need a 4x4 and this looks pretty badass.

New to trucks in general but I currently dd a mk2 supra for shits and giggles, so I'm familiar with a toyota i6 engine and the legendary reliability.

Can I at least expect a comfy Japanese interior? The price is right, at the very least

Watch out for rust cancer. And, well, don't expect to be wowed. It's a thoroughly worked old truck that wasn't exactly fancy or sophisticated when it was new. Make sure everything works the fluids and stuff was done I suppose. Can really be sure with something like that.

Anyway, pics of the mk2 pls. P-type or L-type?

P type, now with snow©

Kind of a rescue, guy who had her before me went ahead and replaced rusty body panels which was cool, but left it 4 colors.

Just recently I went to re-ring the engine and decided to just rebuild it 30 over, runs amazingly well. I'm still looking for a stock air box, the previous owner chopped a cai onto it, it isn't bad looking but may be running slightly rich. Good mpgs though, I'm actually surprised.

Transmission is solid, based toyota makes their stuff to last. Interior is a solid 7/10 blue, previous owner (a kid) cut holes in the door cards for tweeters and speakers which is annoying because he left a birds nest of wires when he took his radio out. Factory speakers work but he used redneck magic to hook up his stuff, I'll have to have someone do that for me.

The last few steps I need to take are door handles, interior door bezels, either new seats or reupholster the old ones, maybe add keyless entry, then finally the paint will be the coup de gras to make her a truly sweet shitbox, can't wait

As for the truck though I really don't expect anything beyond something with an engine and wheels. I like the unique truck bed at least.

The cleaner it is, the better, and if it runs OK without me having to take the engine apart or do a clutch job, all the better.

Frame looks a little rusty but just on the surface, would be a cool starting point for a bro truck/rock crawler, and I'm already a toyota fan so I'm selling myself on it before even seeing it, ha.

Bonus because if I get tired of the green paint I can sand it down and rattle can whatever I please without feeling bad. Picture is of the cold air intake I mentioned, this is before the engine was dropped, have had this car about 2 months

I was thinking that, but I'm helping a friend restore a 66 Chevy pickup, one thing we did was take it down to just the frame and sand off all the surface rust, after that it was golden. That Chevy actually came from the same area as this Toyota, so I guess unless the owner of the Toyota deliberately tried to make rust it should be ok with the same treatment? Who knows.

Would be a pain to take it all down just to rust proof the frame, but I'd have to if I wanted the truck to realize my "overland adventure truck" idea.

Well you seem pretty capable, so if you have the the cash, I'd say go for it. As long as you think you know what you're getting into. Two project cars might start to feel like five with all the work they need though.

That's supra is pretty sweet though. When I get depressed about how heavy my MK3 is I dream about just dropping a 7m in a mk2.
>>
>>16649584
>7m in mk2
This is gonna be my 30th birthday present to myself lol. I figure 5 good years with the 5mge, then I'll swap over to the 7m and beef the old girl up a little bit, give her some new life as a faster, angrier version of herself.

Mk2 supra doesn't really feel like it wants to drift though, maybe the 7m would change that

So I recently bought a BRZ with 40,000km on the clock. It's been driving well and the previous owner followed the regular maintenance schedule. It's now due for the 40,000km service check and I'm going to get the oil changed. However, I had a question about the clutch/transmission, let's say I'm parked in a garage and I start shifting gears, I can hear the gear shifts and the clutch engaging the flywheel. Also, if I just press and depress the clutch pedal I can hear the clutch disc engaging with a katchunk/slap. Is this normal? The car drives and shifts with no problems.

I don't see the asking price which almost definitely means:

>More than you can afford pal.

Not sure if you're joking, but 86's are meme taxed to hell and back. He probably won't sell for under $8k
>>
>>16667135
I know the meme tax but from what I can see, it's rusty, full of aftermarket parts, a questionable engine swap, mismatched panels, rattlecan paint job, unknown interior. 8k for an 86 that was in immaculate condition, maybe. 8k for one that was used, abused and modded to hell and back? Bro.

Maybe you're right though. If I bought one, I'd want it in better condition, so if it's 8k for this or 8k for a close to stock one, I'll just keep looking. I've seen similar versions (non hatchback and or sr5) go for 6k, but they were one color, no rust, stock engine, etc.
>>
>>16666363
I think that'll rub if you turn all the way. Id go 9" wrist. I want new wheels for my mk3 but I can't find 18x8 35-30mm with a design I like. I like RPF1's but they're 18x8.5 40mm and $300/wheel iirc.

I don't think it's worth that much, I just don't think the seller would let it go for much less. People have hard-ons for 86's and SR20's. But hey, I live in Canada and you can't buy a used 86 in onterrible for nearly any amount of money. I wouldn't really want to buy somebody else's project anyway, but if the price is right I guess.
>>
>>16667363
You're right, it is kind of hard to pick good wheels. I just want some period correct wide wheels for that 90s balloon tire look. Plus, drifting is kind of a no go with the auto, but the wider wheel would probably help on the touge. For the ultimate 90s look I'd love some advan SA3R's but they're unobtanium in 5 lug.

Another picture. I don't THINK that's stance I'm seeing, but still, this dude cannot possibly think he's going to get any biters. Nobody is going to want this for any reason except to maybe take it to a body shop and make it look normal. It isn't even going to drive like an 86 with the sr20 in it...

Literally the only person who would want it is the dude who built it, nobody with good money is gonna pay good money for this, but I'll make an offer and see what happens Lel
>>
>>16667767
That's not totally true, hell just never see the return he wants on it. Last year I daily drove a supercharged 3.8l fiero I bought for about 600 usd. He's better off driving it forever unless he wants to basically throw it away. Especially if he paid for all that SR20 shit. If I were him I'd pull the SR, rattle can the 86 to all one color, and sell it as a roller with the SR seperately. Somebody might actually buy them that way.
