Is the maintenance cost and poor reliability of old bimmers blown out of proportion? I've been looking at buying a 90s to early 2000s BMW, but the things people say has me scared of them.

The cheapest BMW you can buy is the most expensive BMW you'll ever own.

THIS X1000000000

same goes for MERCS

WISE MAN

Understood.

I'm looking at E36s for DD purposes. For 4-6K, can I reasonably expect to find something decent?
>>
>>16595139
For a 325i or 328i you could. Don't go below 8k for an M3 or you're in risky territory.
>>
>>16595094
Keep your shit maintained, which is expensive. This prevents having to have your shit repaired, which is more expensive.
Also this >>16595106
Take your time and find a good one, like all other cars.

They are expensive to maintain compared to other cars. $100 for an oil and filter change, $1200 to replace faulty steering position sensor on e60, etc.

Things do break, but not as often if you treat your car well.

E36 are fine reliability wise. Make sure to do the cooling upgrades. A friend of mine has been DDing a $2800 one for 8 years. It just needed struts. After that the only things to fail since then is the stereo screen went out, the fuel door latch broke, and recently the camshaft position sensor went out. The cars got something like 270k miles on it so Id say it was a steal.

got a 318ti for $500. spent $600 replacing some stuff. Only thing that needed replacing was the oil and brake rotors/pads, the rest was just me being a paranoid noob. Not really that hard to work on, you just need to read up on a job before you do it.
>>
>>16595113
this is bullshit I spent 4500 on a Merc with 83k km on it and have never had any problems. Then again I didbuy it off of a friend of my granddad that wanted to get rid of one of his cars
>>
>>16595094
Been driving an e46 316i built in 2003 since 2014 now. Never had any outstanding problems. The usual shit such as defective electric windows and defevtive hazard lights switch. Just use high quality engine oil. If it's a 4 cyl I'd recommend 0W40.
>>
depends a lot on how well the previous owner took care of it, costs add up but if you keep consistent with maintenance, it's spread out much more evenly

basically

They are ok if you do all your own work. Otherwise labor charges will claim your bank account.

Dunno bout the newer ones as the newest BMW I've ever owned is a 1993 E34 530 wagon, which has been somewhat reliable. Everything is falling apart, but the drivetrain is still chugging along without breaking a sweat, or breaking.

Currently the owner of a few E34's of varying displacements and an E32 750. The 750 has been giving me problems, but nothing too major thus far and nothing catastrophical, yet. A coolant hose did break off once just when I pulled to a stop, so I managed to catch that fucker in the blink of an eye. Jurry rigged it back together on the parking lot and it's been fine.
One of the fuel lines was punctured too, but that was like a what, 20cm rubber hose and that's about it.

My most unreliable BMW thus far has been my old E32 730 with the M30 straight six. I managed to destroy the transmission of that thing and one lifter shattered to pieces. The transmission was my fault though, didn't know it did not like being revved when in neutral or park. I did replace the clutch pack and replaced the clutch pack seals, so no more blown clutches while revving stationary.
Replaced the whole god damn head from my spare M30, couldn't be arsed to replace just one lifter, so I did the head gasket in the process. After those two, the car became dead reliable.
