IMO the Golf is one of the most fun modern cars to drive, the steering is so light and response, it's comfy as fuck, acceleration is good enough for a commuter hatch.
The diesels are very reliable too.

My first is really short and I want a double overdrive gear for cruising at 100 mph at 2k rpm. An alternate first that is a little wider would be nice

I like driving stick, but mashing down the clutch in traffic is a beeatch. Prefer my Tiptronic. 6 speeds, engine braking, manual shift on shifter or steering wheel...all the advantages of a manual without the clutch.
