This was from a time when the definitions of AWD and 4wd were almost synonymous.
4wd was typically found in offroading vehicles and was user-selectable while AWD was always engaged.
Between misnomers and engrish, it makes sense that they made the 4 look like an A or vice versa.
Even my 80's AWD rally car has the same thing, and it's a Mazda.

Literally speaking, 4x4, 4WD, and AWD all mean the same thing on a 4-wheel vehicle. With that said, AWD usually implies that it's full-time, and 4x4/4WD sometimes imply that it's locked 50/50 front-rear distribution.
