>4 hours later

Want to get an early N/A watercooled 911/Boxster but are afraid of the infamous IMS issue? Well I'm gonna try to change your mind

>What is an IMS
The intermediate shaft has been present on Porsche flat 6 engines ever since the original air cooled 911 all the way up to the 9x7.1 generation 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters
It's used to indirectly drive the camshafts and is in charge of engine timing

>What goes wrong?
The IMS itself is perfectly fine, the problem was when Porsche switched to watercooled engines they needed a bearing on the flywheel side of the engine, and with their infinite wisdom they decided to use a sealed bearing with a lifetime grease
What happens over time to a small handful of these bearings is that the grease dries out and it fails, causing the IMS to throw the timing out of sync and grenade the entire engine in seconds
The bearing on the opposite side is lubricated by engine oil and has never been known to fail

>How often to these fail?
Engines from '97-'99 use a robust dual row bearing that has a failure rate of less than 1%, it's the engines made from '00-'04 that use a weak single row bearing that has a failure rate as high as 10%
But don't worry just yet, general consensus is that if the bearing in your car is faulty it would have failed before 40k miles
In addition the best way to keep it healthy is to actually drive your car like a Porsche should be driven; low mileage garage queens are more prone to failure

>How much would this cost me to repair?
If you have a higher mileage car I wouldn't worry too much, especially if your car has a dual row bearing
Fixes include:
>replacing the bearing with a new OEM part - $100
>IMS Guardian - $400
>replacing the bearing with an aftermarket ceramic bearing - $600
>removing the seal and adding a flange that directly feels engine oil to the bearing - $800
The last option is the only true way to fix the problem, but I personally don't feel any of this is necessary

Sweet

I've been looking at 996's for a bit of time now and only just realized 997.1 Carrera S's go for ~40k USD nowadays. That seems like an absolute steal for what you're getting.
Outside of IMS memes are there anything wrong with them? Is this normal? Anything to look out for not mentioned in the pasta?

Nothing to be worried about, they are a blast. I have seen them go for 30k with about 80k miles.

Have a listen for the cat converter rattle. Nothing scary but the Porsche replacements are horrifyingly expensive. There are obviously cheap ways around this but it's good for negotiating.

Brakes, particularly rotors, are very pricy due to the size. Again easily done for cheap but something to haggle.

Try to avoid any aftermarket stereos, on the early ones the factory head was shit and many people hacked up the dashes trying to swap things out. reinstalling the dash is tricky and once removed it never fits quite right. Squeaks. Just don't.

Other than that they are a blast. Buy one. I have worked on and driven lots of 911s but for every day I have a serious boner for the 997S at the current prices.

Anybody ever gone the aftermarket route on their 944 headers and exhaust? It seems like there's very little out there
>>
>>16589912
not much gains to be had vs stock as I understand it but I believe Lindsey racing makes a kit.

Never really looked though as the regs I'm building to don't allow anything other than stock for headers.
>>
>>16590013
Yea I've read about the 944spec regulations and they require stock headers. Probably why stock headers crazy expensive and rare. Just had to dish out $70 for just the outer headers. Most expensive repair so far.
>>
>>16590395
Not too bad for $70, you can sometimes get lucky on Rennlist with that stuff.

They've been trying to merge 944 cup and spec 944 so now there is an open class but at that price point you're better off with the turbo, so yea I don't think there's much out there for the n/a.

maybe go custom? What's your plan for the car?

hi pog

been a while

thinking of deleting my muffler this weekend and trying it out. Primary and secondary cats will remain in place. I don't really know what else to do with the car besides adding an aux cord and making it louder.

also my fuel gauge is being finnicky. full tank of gas marks as half a tank in the gauge. Common issue apparently.

Besides the IMS, what are the typical problems of a 996 and what should I be looking for in a good candidate car?
>>
>>16594228
>damaged microswitches in the door handles (window has to move down a bit when you pull on the door handle )
>damaged microswitches in the keyfob itself or keyfob that works intermittently ( $300+ to get a new key as they cant be easily reprogrammed)
>cdr220 stereo is known to fail
>wonky fuel gauge, senders fail
>center console scratches easily and its a nightmare to fix and repaint
>mayo in the oil cap can indicate cylinder imperfections in early 996
>>
>>16594228
Rear main seal can leak, not a very hard fix much like the IMS bearing iirc. Still, make sure it has been done or at least it doesn't leak.
Steering rack and such, again watch for leaks.
Coolant tank and cap can start leaking on older ones, these got updated later into its lifecycle.
As always, make sure the previous owner maintained it properly.

And you can check for Type II over-rev warning using an OBDII scanner, the Type II over-rev means a previous owner moneyshifted which is something you don't really want.

As for which options you want, full leather interior is awesome, sport seats are pretty cool, color-matched center console really makes the interior pop and Litronic (xenon) headlights make the weird headlights look much sharper with their clear lenses and projector housings.

A bad idea unless you are already comfortable wrenching and diagnosing issues yourself. If you have to take it to a shop expect to spend a minimum of $300-$500.

Sure, the 911 is possibly the most famous Porsche design, but most people who lived through the late 70s to the early 90s certainly remember this badass mofo, especially in Europe. It might not be the most recognizable Porsche but it might very well be the second most.

That is a thought, perhaps the 3.4 or 3.6 will slip in there and work, but if it can be done with the 3.8 S engine it will truly be a beast.

Find an Indy Porsche shop and start chatting with them, see what they can suggest or if they are even interested.

Guesstimating that when all is said and done with a shop doing the work you'd be looking at $15-$20k on top of purchasing the cayman. More depending on which 911 engine you buy
>>
>>16619430
I think all the S engines are M97s, whereas "regular" 911s, Boxsters and Caymans have M96s of varying capacities. A Cayman S is probably your best bet for a 3.8 S swap, obviously because of upgraded brakes and cooling and I think the engine is from the same family.
>>
>>16619527
M97s were used in pre-face lifted 987s and 997s
M96s were used in 986s and 996s
This applies for both non-S and S models

Turbos, GT3s, and GT2s all used completely different Metzger engines
>>
>>16619995
Looks like I made a bit of a mistake, a quick read through this thread cleared things up: http://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/730388-all-this-talk-about-m96-vs-m97-what-s-the-straight-dope.html

Basically the M96 was used in the 997, but only the C2. The C2S had the M97. I'm assuming the same goes for the 987, M96 for the base, M97 for the S.
You're right about the 996/986 all having M96 engines though.

>Late 2005 to Early 2006 3.4 litre "M96" 295 hp flat-six (VarioCam Plus). "M96" engine versions not sold in U.S.
>all MY 2006-MY 2008 U.S. delivery Cayman (245 hp) and Cayman S (295 hp) equipped with "M97" engines
>Late 2006–2009 3.4 litre "M97" 295 hp flat-six (VarioCam Plus)
>2009- 2.9 litre 265 hp flat-six (VarioCam Plus)

>2009- 3.4 litre "9A1" 320 hp flat-six (VarioCam Plus and DFI)

>Late 2005 to Early 2006 3.4 litre "M96" 295 hp flat-six (VarioCam Plus). "M96" engine versions not sold in U.S.

The 3.4l is the S, so it's the other way around for the Cayman I guess? Non-S is all 2.7l M97, S models outside the US between late 2005 and early 2006 have the 3.4l M96.

Got the headers and A/O separator in place. Thinking about painting the headers before I get too deep into it. There's some open metal spots where I dremeled parts off, would painting it protect it? And how long would generic engine paint last on these?

>>16634564

>>16634564

>>
>>16631352
>>16633087
I had considered getting those, but here in PA a friend told me that he got in trouble cause a local cop noticed him driving it frequently, and if you have antique plates you can only drive it one day a week. He was forced to put regular plates on in the end. I DD my 944, so I didn't want to deal with that issue if it arose. Other people have told me that no one cares, but that cop is still sitting at the same place every morning on my daily commute...
>>
>>16636962
Yea it can be tricky. If you want to DD it the only benefit to getting antique plates is the one time tax. In VA you can DD antique plates only if you get a yearly inspection.

Otherwise it's limited to one or two days a week (basically read no driving to work) and no farther than 250 miles away from home. You have to prove that you own another vehicle with normal tags. My 44 is a track build so it lives in a garage and will get trailered back and forth. So for me the limitations aren't bad.

Not sure how it differs in PA.
>>
>>16638427
PA laws are very similar when i looked them up. The thing is mine is used for both DD and occasional track use... but it's got some rust on the frame that's questionable and the previous owner did work to it that's not exactly gonna pass inspection here, so I have to take it to a local shady mechanic just to pass inspection. I'd like the plates just to not worry about inspections.

So /pog/, why did it fail?
>>
>>16644309
It came out around the time the Boxster was teased as Porsche's new entry level car

And why the fuck would you spend $40k on a 25 year old platform with a 4 cylinder engine when a brand new mid engine platform with a flat 6 is just around the corner?

one of the guys that goes to the porsche specialist i take my 986 has one in dark blue

its pretty neat, inside it feels so 90's compared to my boxster, but strangely comfortable and simple aswell.

I also found the fucking massive rear wiper motor hilarious, it's a massive box in the corner of the glass, with nothing else near it.

you dont have to memorize it.

Why the fuck would Porsche make a car that's made strictly for the track, a convertible?

It's common sense really.

hello /pog/
I was wondering if I would be able to fit in a 996 or later 911 or any model Cayman
im 6'8"
>>
>>16662674
I'm 5'10" and need to move the seat all the way back and telescope the steering wheel forward to fit comfortably in my Boxster

But later model cars might be different, best way would be to sit in one and see. Pretty sure seats in 911s can go back farther than Boxsters or Caymans
>>

This

At 6'8 I think the cayman is probably out, but you should feel ok in a 996 or 997. The steering wheel is kinda low tho.

Go for a couple of test drives
>>
>>16662713
Is it a 986 / first gen Boxster? The seating room in there is probably similar to the 996, methinks.

>>16662737

>>16662739
Yeah a 986, but the 996 has back seats and more room for the seat to slide back. The seat in my car goes right up against the rear firewall
>>
>>16662739

I had a tall friend (around 6'2) sit in my boxster and he couldn't fit comfortably. his legs were touching the steering wheel with the seat all the way back.

an anon's dad owns one and a couple other very pricey porsches.

You're thinking way out of budget for the average guy on /o/, letalone the average porsche owner.

there's a guy with a 356C which is worth around as much though.

i daily a 986 S

400$ oil changes are a meme, so is any kind of expensive maintenance.

I have owned both audis and BMW's in it's price bracket and so far the porsche has been the cheapest german car to maintain i've ever owned.

I would only trade my 986 for a 135i, any of the other cars are shit.

keep in mind that with the 986 you will not get any of the tunability or real aftermarket for the car. You can literally count the mods you can do to a porsche with a single hand, desnorkel, LWFW, 987 intake, plenum.

FI is out of the question because noone does it and it's cheaper to literally fit an ls1 in the car.

also don't forget 986 in general have open differentials, if it matters to you. You can get a quaife lsd for around 1k.
>>
>>16672794
Does the 986 S not have an lsd option? I know it's an option on the 911s
