I'll start. How do you put a car on jackstands if your jack is on the jack point? I want to take my resonator off and I don't want to have my car on just my sketchy oem jack.
>>
If I have to get my car up high to get under it, I'll put one jack on each side, and then a jack stand next to the jack point, but not being used. I'll leave the car on the jacks, but if they start to fail, the jack stands will catch it and at least give me enough time to get out and jack it back up.

>>
>>16572319

The jack points are categorized in your owners manual. You wouldn't use a jackstand point to jack up your car...you would use it to place a jackstand there.

For example, you don't put jackstands under the differential, but you can use the differential to jack up your car and then access the jackstand points

So I have a 2012 gti with some bolt ons and a ecu upgrade.
Is it normal for the car to feel like it slips into neutral, although still in gear, while putting the accelerator to the floor?

Say I'm in 3rd gear at around 2000 revs. I put the pedal to the floor and the car while accelerate hard up until 4500. At around then, the acceleration kinda dies out (although still increasing speed) and the revs start to climb to the moon without much effect. If I let off the pedal but still in the same gear, it'll start to catch a bit but after say another 1000 revs it'll climb again in a way that feels like it's slipping a bit.

Is that shit normal for ff turbo cars?
Its my first turbo car so idk wtf

if your car isnt shit you should be able to shift from one to two and then straight into d without letting off the gas

that's a pretty hard question because it depends how the car was treated previously. An engine with 200,000 miles that is treated well can end up running longer than a miss treated engine with 100,000 and year kinda plays a factor too.

I'm looking to replace the radiator of my friend's 96' Nissan Sentra GXE, but have barely any car knowledge. I know people who fix their own cars, so I'm planning on asking them to help out mainly with it. >>
>>16572370

It's a good car. Interior is a huge improvement over past Impreza's and the chassis is way the fuck more rigid, and that means that the overall handling is going to be a massive improvement as well.

Impreza's already had pretty decent handling to begin with due to the low center of gravity and packaging from the flat-4 layout (compared to other 4-pot econo-cars anyway).

If you want an AWD hatch, it's hard to find a better optionthan the Impreza.

My current car is a complete beater '97 Infiniti I30 that we made the mistake of buying back when I was 16 without doing much research - it has been nothing but a complete piece of shit breaking down every 6 months like clockwork and we've since put more than double what we paid for it into it due to sheer gambler's fallacy.

I want to get rid of it and replace it with something less beat to shit that I can feel confident about maintaining and owning, but now that we've replaced almost fucking everything in the car short of an oil leak it's had since we bought it, I'm not sure if I should just toss it for a bargain price or hold onto it.
Any advice on if I should just get rid of the damn thing? It has so many cosmetic issues (scratches, dents, paint, etc) both interior and exterior that I'm afraid nobody would take it if I gave it away.

Question:
I have a a yearmodell 2000 of a Mercedes E320 top of the line with all luxuries. Sadly some stuff going busted lately/ did not pass the tech inspection.

Now ive got 1999 year model of a Mercedes e320 DIESEL that's somewhat better nick then my other one. ( expect the fucktard slammed it to the ground and put on 18" wheels that rubs the front fenders) Sadly it's not even half equipped ( like antispin, old sat nav, cellphone and more )

Now the question should i gut the diesel model for the gas model OR got the gas model to equip the diesel one?

And before anyone ask, yes the diesel engine runs strong and good.

The vacuum line holds a diaphragm inside the regulator closed so that fuel cannot pass through. That is, until fuel pressure becomes too high for the vacuum pressure and fuel is able to force its way through, relieving fuel pressure down to proper levels.
>>
>>16574406
It's more or less how you described.
The only annoying part is removing the bumper and all the shit that blocks the radiator from coming out.

Sometimes, although it's a rare occurrence, you may have an easier time pulling the radiator from under the car rather than above it, it depends which side has the most shit blocking the radiator

Interesting. I'm trying to understand why a car would switch from one with vacuum to the style without. My car makes a noise that gets faster with speed. The car is manual and I can feel vibration that goes along with the noise.
i.e I feel the vibration get faster as I go faster with my hand on the shifter. The other day I was driving around and the car starting shaking like crazy. It honestly felt like this https://youtu.be/vjE-wHsjZ_E?t=21s was going to happen. Could it be a driveshaft issue? U-joint maybe?

I tried jacking the car up to check for play, but I'm a fat fuck and even with the jack fully extended I couldn't fit under the car to reach the driveshaft. Should I try jacking up the rear diff because its slightly lower than the jacking points on the side of the car?

2004 XC90 wiperblades

Apparently they use 600/530mm wiper blades in this car (OEM), they switched to aerotwin / flat blade design somewhere in 2004. My car has the old style wiper blades (metal hook), I'm looking at some Aerotwin "retrofit" wiper blades.

what is a car's displacement supposed to tell me? I know it's the volume of the cylinders but what's the difference in performance between say a 1.3 and 1.5 liter? is higher displacement going to mean higher power or is that not always the case?
>>
>>16580031
It's not always the case.

All things being equal, a 1.5 would make more power than a 1.3, but there are a LOT of variables.
>>
>>16579963
There's more control in general, how much you notice it can depend a lot on where you live.
In an icy/snowy area you'll most certainly notice it more than if you live in a warm area, simply because you can control the traction more in hills, for example.

I think it's different mainly in the sense that you're aware of where you lie with the gears, there's more awareness around it.

There's more to it, but those are just some basic reasons why someone would prefer it.

The green at the end is coolant. The fact that everything is rushing out means it was very pressurized, surprised it wasn't hot.

Having trouble verifying stock weight but the only number I've seen is about 50 lbs for a dual exhaust system. Stainless is is just under 27.5 lbs, and inconel is 15.4.

I'm kind of doubting the stock number but it is a very large system and it is pretty much all at the very end of the car.

I just sent a message to someone that might know the actual stock weight as he is a major supplier for the exhausts and tunes these cars.

is there a good place to find car manuals online? I googled it but all the results look like viruses from outdated websites.
>>
>>16581655
If you mean official workshop manuals, then you are shit out of luck for cars younger than 10 years because everything is stored online.
For older cars, you can find torrents pretty easily, as manuals were distributed on CDs and there are plenty of them available online.

You just need to research the official name of the manual and find the corresponding torrent.
Ford, for example, used to call their manuals "TIS" and so does GM (the European one, at least), Volvo calls them VADIS and so on. Most manufacturers give them specific names.

If you talk about generic, third party manuals, then go for sites that have pirated books (like bookzz) and try to find relevant titles.

I have a problem.
I recently bought a Subary legacy 1999 with 400euros, 177 000km total driven. To restore and resell.
Check engine light is full disco.
it blinks constantly at random intervals.

So I called my professional car mechanic friend, and for three weekends we have been looking for the culprit.
Each goddamn individual part works.
But the damn light keeps going.

What the fuck could be wrong with it?
My friend thinks there might be some condensation water in the electrical wiring.

How do you guys deal with superficial rust on body panels? I got a 93 Polo GT and I have a few spots of superficial rust on the roof and bonnet that I want to remove before they spread further. What should I do about it?

I have a 1991 Mercury Cougar and my drivers side door about 70% of the time refuses to latch shut and when it does shut it usually pops back open when driving down the road.

Yesterday I cleaned and scrubbed the daylights out of it with carb cleaner to see if that would help and the regreased all the moving parts however this only slightly fixed the door shutting.

Is there anything else I can do besides take the door apart and take apart the mechanism to fix it?
>>
>>16582172
The only thing you can do is grind the rust away and coat the bare metal with paint
Make sure you remove ALL the rust or it will just spread again under the paint
>>
>>16582210

Is your door sagging? Can you pick up on it and move it up and down?

If so replace the door pins, realigning the door hinges couldn't hurt either.
>>
>>16582210
Maybe your door is misaligned.
The latch part that is on the body of the car (don't know the English name, the part of the latch that is not on the door) can usually be adjusted. Try to unscrew it, move it a little bit and tighten it back.

In case your latch is not adjustable or this doesn't solve the problem, try to put a piece of wood where the hinges are and pull the door hard against it, hopefully you will align it back again
>>
>>16582241
Nope the door and pins were one of the first things I checked and they seemed to be in line however when I shake my door there is a noticeable raddle like something is loose also I checked to make sure it wasn't the window its something metallic

Sandpaper and patience should do the job. In case it gets too deep you can use some bondo to even out the surface before painting, but shouldn't be a problem if it's only surface rust.

Get some fine paper too for when you are done grinding the rust away so you can smoothen the edge between the paint and the bare metal so it won't be visible when you pain over it.

I recently received a 1997 Buick LeSabre because my great grandmother died. It has a little under 64,000 miles on it. It has a few things I want to check out on it.

1) The oil level light will come on right after the engine starts and then it will turn off on its own. The oil isn't low. The oil is new. The oil has always been changed at its proper intervals because she always took good care of the car since it was the last car my great grandfather bought her before he died.

2) When I was pulling into the driveway today, the fuel gauge dipped hard from a little above half a tank to almost completely empty and then back up to around half a tank.
>>

Use paper instead of cloth and use a lot of it, don't just use the same piece for the whole windshield.
Alternatively, have one rag for spraying and initial cleaning and another rag to dry up the whole thing.
If it doesn't come clean the first time, repeat until it's clean, you are clearly doing something wrong

I know a bunch of people who say newspaper is excellent for cleaning glasses but I never tried it.
>>
>>16586215
You probably have two sensors, one is for the pressure gauge and the other one is just a switch that comes on when pressure is low and is used for the low-pressure light only.
That switch may be going bad or it's just dirty and sticks to the low pressure position for a while before returning to its normal state.

>Sorry this was poorly worded. For buying a used car, what should be the cut off for miles.

It depends on the car too. A few cars are meant to have a head gasket replacement in the 100K to 120K range. If you can do that yourself, then it will be a few hundred dollars up. If you have a dealer do it, then it can be $4000 if it's a stealership and +$2000 if it's a regular dealership. For my new GM car, it is approx $3800 from my GM stealership since they have all kinds of requirements such as exam fees before the repair, doing the repair, and then diagnosis and exam after the repair.

The stealership stacks exams to obtain documentation to prevent customers from complaining about improper repairs. It sucks they basically charge the customer to prevent the customer from complaining. But if there is a failure 3 days later, the dealership will point to the exam and say nothing wrong, it must you hooning the car that killed the engine.

>How much does some simple pinstriping cost?

It depends on what type of pinstriping. For example, pinstriping that came with brand new Chevrolet Cavaliers was simply added on pinstriping tape. Then there is artist-made pinstriping done by hand which means there are subtle variances. It is not simple to do even if it looks simple because both sides of the car must match spatially. A good shop will do a cross check with a laser beam and the laser line will match on both sides. For example, the curlicue on one side will be at the corresponding location on the other side as shown by the laser.

This system uses a set of mirrors on stands. Calibration is easy to get all the mirrors lined up before starting. Then the mirrors are spread out on both sides of the car.

Many times. I never sand for nicks and single line scratches. I use the techniques advised in this archived thread, in particular:

The various posts in that thread are insightful and useful. I've used them and it works for me too especially the use of touch up paint with toothpicks and needles. The right angle swishing of excess paint takes just a little skill but is easy to do. Easier than claying that's for sure.
