Turbo + carb is super expensive as well. At that point your better off just getting a big honking single plane Edelbrock Victor or something. And putting a TOI unit on their, but even that is expensive. Or just using a stock truck bottom end, better heads and a cam and then using the stock truck lower and a gt40 upper intake. But I don't know shit about turbo charging a vehicle

While doing that I'd check the condition of the tires, brake pads/shoes. If it doesn't run consider rebuilding it upgrading the carb.

>>
>>16563738
Depends what you are trying to do
And it's hard to believe it's a California car and no rust
Check the under the trim on the back window on the bottom especially, check the part of the quater panel behind the wheels, check under the trim on the bottom of the windsheild and under the wind shield wiper grille
All are very common rust spots that people tend to over look or hide
>>

Man that thing is cool. Does it have a name?
>>
>>16563775

I would like to modernize the drivetrain, suspension and steering and have it become a weekend fun car.
Currently it doesn't run, since the carb needs a rebuild.
I will definitely check in those places for rust, thanks for letting me know.
>>
>>16563802
Badass. How loud is that thing? It's gotta be decently quick though.

>>16563806
If you're going that route, which I will be too with the ferd, I recommend just to get it running and increase bit by bit. Theres a lot of fun to be had with a stock 60s vehicle with low limits, you'll find out.
>>
>>16563806
What kind of engine and tranny does it have
The stock suspension is actually very capable due to it being almost a triangulated 4 link, you could get away with getting some aftermarket shocks Springs and a sway bar and have it handle decently

>>16563856
A whooping 200 horse power lol and your tranny should fair just fine to any upgrades you do to the engine in the state it is now
I assume it's a 2 barrel what would free up alot of power would be to junk that and the intake manifold and get a 4 barrel carb and intake
I would check your valve lash too cause God knows when the last time it was adjusted
>>
Do carb throttle plates close all the way? I know they shouln't, but do they?
>>
>>16564320
The engine wouldn't idle if they closed all the way. There has to be a cunt hair of a gap.

>>16563705
>>16563674
>>16563653
Only one kind of boot I wear and its Danner.
>>
>>16564320
No, there's actually a little screw that the carb plate rests on when the throttle closes that determines how much air gets into the engine. When I was having retarded idle problems a few weeks ago it was because the spring that keeps the screw in place failed and kept backing itself out do the throttle plate was just chilling at a1/4 throttle. Not good for building good brake vacuum or for doing anything.

>>16566939
Right in front of the driver side door. It runs up to the cowl. Something on the cowl is leaking and water runs down there to pool on the floor.
Unfortunately no money so i can't solve the problem right now.
Hoping my tax return will be enough to help cure this problem.
>>
>>16566939
>>16566964
Oh i should say, there was insulation there so it probably held water right up against that metal.

Tomorrow ima go wild with a can of rust converter but it's defo rusting all along the path the water took to get there.
>>
>>16566964

>>16566968
I'd hit it with a grinder or a sander and then paint it.
>>
>>16566975
The whole interior will eventually be sanded down. The converter should just stop the rust from growing until i have the funds to attack this.
I may need to pull the windshield. I'm hoping i won's because i don't have the gasket to reseal it.

I also doubt that model A was a true survivor car, it most likely was a hunk of crap ready for the junkyard, as with most model A hotrods built today. Alot of people pay outrageous prices for rusted out bodies and build the cars from there, Most true survivor cars stay survivor cars, and any pieces of crap that are built into something like this I applaud.

your leg pants would ruffle in the wind riding down the highway. I also had no heat or defroster motor, and we had a huge ice storm about three years ago, I had to drive with my window cracked so my windshield wouldn't fog up in below freezing weather.

That being said, it being my first old car, seeing as how it had zero amenities of modern cars and it seemingly wanting to fly apart at the seams, I still sometimes wish i was still driving it.

You don't want to weld right onto the primer, you paint the panel, tack it in, and do a butt weld on the clean surfaces. You can use a wire wheel to clean the small gap where there's still some weld through primer on the backing plate.

Probably gonna try to find another 324 Block. I think I will be able to salvage everything but the block. I want to keep the original Jetaway and the early olds rockets are pretty cool. I had already planned on doing a complete rebuild so the hit to my pocket won't be that bad.

This picture might give you a better view of the crack

So, I've got a 74 Dodge van that for reasons, I had to change my carb. This new carb is a Tomco rebuilt holley 2bbl that will not dial in at all...
It just runs like it's dirty-- rich hunting idle, dies under throttle, unless it's choked. Even up to temp, runs ok at 3/4 choke.
I can't find any vac leaks at all, especially considering I have basically no vacuum actuated shit besides the advance. The rest are capped.
Does anyone have any ideas?

>>
>>16574139

>>
>>16574076
A 324 isn't rare at all. They built like 1.4 Million

>>
>>16574043
your float level might be all fucky.

your timing might be a tad fucky.

when the engine is running put something over the carb to stop the air from getting into the engine. If the idle dies down but doesn't stall then that's a definite vacuum leak. if it starts to run rough at first and eventually stalls it's still a vacuum leak, if it stalls immediately then you can completely rule out a vacuum leak from the checklist once and for all.

Doing the above will also help with a dirty carb, as the high vacuum through the carb will pull alot of the crap out of the passages and blast it out of the exhaust pipe.

also make sure your vacuum advance can actually hold vacuum. I've had advance diaphragms tear on me before and drive me insane trying to figure out why the engine was running like shit.

Are you 100% absolutely positively SURE you got the manifold clean before you put the carb on?
>>
>>16574717
Chokes purely by hand right now,so I can kill it with the choke. The advance diaphragm is worth checking come daylight...
I didn't have timing issues previous, so I have a hard time thinking they might have gone awry. Plus, the timing marks are inaccessible unless I remove the power steering pump.
But if it can't be one thing, I gotta check the others...

Advance diaphragm seems ok.
My throttle shaft seems a little worn, but I wouldn't think it would suck enough air to cause this much of a problem... covering the end opposite the linkage didn't help.
Gonna pull the steering pump so I can see the timing marks later, see if I get any hilariously off results.
>>
I think my car is on the verge of starting up but I can't figure out why it doesn't quite make it.
The carbs are primed, I give it a bit of gas before turning the ignition on, it'll run on the fuel that was squirted in so long as the key is turned, but once the fuel is gone it's just the starter motor.

You have to set a base tune for self-learning EFI as well.
It's not plug n play as you would believe, you need to tell the ECU how much gas it'll need to get the engine running, then idle. The only tuning it does after that is based on the o2 sensor down stream and the incoming air.

So something pretty fucking sweet happened.
One of the dudes that owns a tow truck and junkyard business in town was dropping off a POS VW bug on Friday and he was telling me about his 1980 Lincoln MkVi that he has and he said he had an extra front turn signal cover still in the Ford box.
He straight up gave it to me for free, since my right side one is gone, he said he'd never use it and would rather let a fellow Lincoln owner have it.
So that saved me $270US. Feels good man

I know nothing about cars besides basic maintenence. In what caliber of fucked will I be if I decide to buy some barn '82 280zx with "good engine and transmission but some rust"
Would driving this car as a daily be a horribly stupid idea? Am I a faggot for asking this in a thread like this?

>pls respond
>>
>>16590821
Barn finds are usually fucked beyond all basic repairs.

>good engine and trans

Ass hat is trying to make a buck off some retarded kid that just wants a cool car.

Which sounds like you.
>>
>>16590890
It's a 82. So it's probably been sitting there rusting since 2000. Test drive the car if you want. but if it feels even slightly off fucking keep your money

can confirm, I was once said ass hat.

I sold this lincoln to a couple of young hippies.

im afraid desu. im scared that i'll be scared of owning the generation of cars that i love, and that when i can afford to afford a shitty car, i'll be stuck with what will be considered classic in 10 years.

I've seen it too often when older car enthusiasts deeply regret not getting that rusted shitbox when they were younger, and now see it go on auction for thousands.
>>
>>16590821
>>16590934
Buying a total piece of shit because you don't realize it's a piece total piece of shit is like a rite of passage. I bought a completely niggered 89 firebird when I was 18 and stoned and stupid, and that's how I learned.
>>
>>16590970

Just copped this remarkably poor investment. Work done so far:

>pulled 305 as soon as I saw coolant in the oil
>put in 350
>got it to stumble

To-do:
>racekor the horrible interior
>take off the trashed edelbrock, put decent quadrajet back on
>do burnouts

Eventually:
>Sloppy Mechanics turbo LS swap
>hella cool pro touring suspension/wheels

Expect several years of incompetent funposting lads
>>
>>16585944
But it's gorgeous and huge and in really good shape?
>>
>>16591683
Nice fucking car. Dirt Mary crazy Larry as fuck

>quadrajet
Y tho. Just get a Holley.
>>
>>16592458
because quadrajets are capable of better gas mileage than other carbs provided you stay off the secondaries, they're also capable of a nearly fuel injection-like state of tune which would be nearly impossible to get with other carbs.

Also, when the secondaries open up it sounds orgasmic.
>>
>>16590988
Horrible, I spent a ton of money and took a massive loss when I sold it, but I learned a lot.
>>
>>16592458
Holley a shit.

I mean, they work just fine, but the damn valve bodies always leak fuel. Always.
Look at this shit: http://oldcarmanualproject.com/manuals/Carbs/Holley/TypicalViews/pages/2300C.html

You're better off with a Carter. (also made by Weber and branded as Edelbrock lmao)
>>
>>16592800
I went with Edelbrock just because from what I've read, with the vacuum secondaries, is a lot more streetable. Like fuck though if could afford it, I'd go with a self learning EFI like a Holley sniper or the one I posted earlier in the thread.

They'll probably be getting cheaper and cheaper though
>>
>>16592458
Holleys are shit for gas mileage. Quadrajet a best
>>
>>16592892
Good for top end and tuning though.
>>
>>16593031
Doesn't matter when your average boomer runs Tarbo 350s that shift well before any sort of revs
>>
>>16593140
This is true
>You know I got this here 68 Chevelle with a 307 and 2.88 gears and a turbo tree fiddy but I really can feel the difference that this 900cfm Holley double pumper Street eliminator with fuel zappers does when I step on it. No tire kickers 50 grand I know what I got

Just 'cuz I have it and it probably works. Don't really want to put money into the engine/trans since they'll be out again soon, maybe even before the end of the year.

As a liberal, she can kindly fuck off. She's not the individual I want to run this nation, she's lost her chance.

>>16595469

>>16595550
Fair enough. Do you have a mechanical or electrical fuel pump? I'm trying to figure out what kind of set up I should do for a 302.
>>
>>16593182
I'm turning 27 and I've gone through a ton of cars since then, I post here occasionally. My winter daily is an 85 Eldorado. I've got an 89 mustang, a shitty old truck, dracula's old 71 coupe deville, and a 71 Torino that I'm completely restoring (first time I've ever attempted such a huge project). I also just acquired an 03 impala that needs a head gasket for free (more or less). All of these cars/projects wouldn't be possible if I didn't stick with it back then. You figure it out as you go, just be patient while working, buy a shop manual and dive in. Also, try to have a decently reliable daily driver. Good luck!

>>
>>16595918

>>
>>16595933
Lol I'm just going to get a medium sized one. I've got no idea what I'm doing but that seems like a hell of a lot better than plumbing a new fuel system

Figure out what it takes to maintain [pressure required by your carb] and go with that.
