Hey all.
I work as a diesel mechanic for a mining company. Our fleet is about 100 Mac trucks. Mainly dumps but we have mixers and haul trucks too.
Point being, been doing this for a few years and prior I worked for a Dodge dealership and that sucked pretty bad. Never felt good charging what we did for our shit services and getting a crap cut of the flat rate.
Any truckers out there or diesel mechanics? Does it get any less shitty?
Go be a aircraft mechanic if you want shitty. Hope you like safety wires and heart attacks. HD mechanics have it better than normal mechanics from what I hear.
I use to drive a end dump and dump truck literally the easiest decent money you can make
Was a tech at a Ford stealership for 5 years, master certified and all that bull shit. Hated it for the most part, shop politics and flat rate suck. Been working as a diesel tech for a few months now for a small privately owned fleet. It pays better, but the work can really suck sometimes. At least it's hourly so I know I'm actually bringing money home at the end of the week. Really don't want to turn a wrench for the rest of my life though.
Was a tech at a high end/speed shop for about 10 years. I kind of came to the end of my rope a few years back (topped out pay unless I wanted to move south). I had my best friend who's a tech at a municipality offering me a job working on the the plow trucks, HD stuff or I also had my welding certs to completely change my industry. I went with welding and I don't regret it.

Drive a truck, money's good and so are the quarterly bonus's, only downside is i start at 330am but finish around 1-3pm llife's good
Sorta diesel mechanic.
Got out of the diesel mechanic field and started a mobile mechanic/fleet maintenance service.
I'm happier. I don't charge as much as some in my area (45/hr for on-site maintenance) but I enjoy it. Low price is helping me build business, hours are flexible, I get to do what I want.
Won't ever go back to being a heavy diesel mechanic for a company again. Whenever something breaks, it's your fault.
"You should have maintained it better!" I'm not the operator that bent the cylinder suck my dick.
When your the owner/operator, it suddenly turns into "Thank god you're here can you fix this?"
Pic is the service truck I picked up. Has a flat-bed and some toolboxes on it now.
