The entire structure itself distributes weight like an egg. The right angles are irrelevant unless you are flipped on the front grill or back tailgate.

When flipped over on the side or your roof, the weight distributed will be distributed on the side with its own theoretical 2D force diagram.

The last point is this thing is probably built for high speed climbing up weird obstacles. So it's not meant to roll over. It's just really good protection (and probably cheap if he welded all this shit together) against rolling.
>>
>>16552154
You like me have considered building one eh?
>>
>>16552065
>>16552129
>>16552154
It's more than strong enough provided it's good tubing, but the lack of triangulation does make it an inefficient design. Could have been built stronger with less weight.

I've looked more into making tube protectors for my back bumper and a removeable exterior bar or five.
Other than that, I've just taken way too many physics courses back ):

>>16552374
Well the beauty of tubes is that they're made of cylinders which are much stronger in their own rights AND hollow so really light. I suppose you could use less tubes with a more efficient design. Maybe he likes the design.

Also, why don't people use titanium bars for vehicle reenforcements? Like a titanium offroad bumper or titanium skids? I've been thinking of taking my sheets of titanium to a sheetworker and bending some skid plates out of them.

>>16552566
Yeah i got drunk yesterday and drove that around. The LED bar pissed me off at night, though.
Maybe i should checc out spintyres. Looks like the forums are currently doing third party fixes for any crashes or other updates.

Automatics are best, don't listen to the woman. If automatic transmissions weren't best then why do 80% of the pirate4x4 builds use one?

That's because auto is best for offroading 90% of the time. Try shifting on a hill climb, or in mud, in a manual without loosing momentum. You pick a gear and are stuck with it, an auto can shift while you keep the pedal floored. Also automatics are softer on drivetrain parts, so less breakage. Plus the ability to start on a steep hill with autos, without spinning your tires, like you would popping the clutch on a manual.

Manual transmissions are for the wheeler that has an underpowered shitbox and needs the slight gearing advantage. Or they have no good automatic transmission choices, like Toyota 4runners and pickups.
>>
>>16558778

well sure but leaving it in 1 still often requires engine braking due to the gearing of the automagics as a whole.

anway, i'mm going to agree with y ou more or less. but there are terrains in which iwouldant touse manual instead of automatics.
being stuck in mud in manuals a few too many times can tell you why.

depends on how much of a jew you want to be about it. you can do a bodylift + cutting for like $200 then youd just need to add in the cost of tires or you can replace literally every part and do some icon shit or something and be out $4k and everything in between.
what are your uses for the jeep? that is the best way to decide which way to go.

So don't.

Anyway, speaking of being a cuck, I'm looking at dual battery systems and it looks like these switches that can handle 250-500amp are a minimum of $400.

So I'm looking at something stupid like $750 in dual battery parts alone and then shopping the little battery cradle is going to be a pain in the ass.

Has anyone done it with a cheaper system or is this just something that you kinda have to live with? Swapping to deep cycles seem to be the same price and I don't think 24Vs is an option in LeafLand...

momandpop yards are usually better and offer discount/allow negotiations the more you buy.

They haven part shelves and part out vehicles. so i'm thinking they have all there prices approximated on the shelved items, but not sure about part outs

I was talking to my fab today and we were talking about winches in general. I mentioned my surprise that they mounting screw diameters were all standardised unlike anything else in this world.

He mentioned that there literally could just be one factory in China somewhere that makes the winches for the entire world with different quality ones coming off different conveyor systems. Was a neat idea, actually. More believable than gay frogs caused by planned parenthood.

you need to source all the parts yourself but it may take some time.

in terms of 4x4s too theyre almost certainly in better condition as well. most of the japs just drive them around the streets stopping at sushi emporiums or whatever. if you import an aussie one you can almost guarantee its been thrashed.
then again if you get a jap one you have to deal with rhd which sucks

Fuck off. I still need my dual battery question answered. Anyway, LuCy >>16565014 looks like the alternator switch costs $400-$600 in order to handle the amperage Then the cradle specially made to fit under the wheel well would be another $200 unless I can find someone to get one of those waterproof crates at a junkyard.

I mean. It does save money on hotels, motels, hostels, and sometimes food in order to run the setup. But I would be open to any /out/fags here who have one of these as an option.

electrical engineer here
here you go
probably about $100 worth of wire and $100 worth of components.

Ensure to use 12v continuous duty contactors not just starter solenoids which will cook and quickly.

Or be fancy and use mosfets, which is easier than it sounds. maybe i teach you. Whatever, diodes ensure batteries get charged at same time, contactors (relays) ensure batteries get discharged selectedly.

Ensure not to be leaving switches on because contactors do draw power, which is why mosfet design is better. However, smart wumpus can ensure no battery drain at all by turning switch off.

no need for new alternator.

Relays and mosfet has a conglomerated design up to 250AH which was what my fabricator was going to get me. Because of the finicky parts and all, he showed me they were $350 from the dealer and would charge me the base price if I get him to install it for me and make the battery bracketing (that's like another $300-400 more) which is where the price goes up. I could get the "smart" sensor system which can handle 500AH and has automatic relays that detects primary battery drain.

That saves me a trip to the sheet worker, desu and would've probably got him to shop me a battery cradle anyway.

Do you have better idea on saving on the mosfets, relays, and the general gimmicky add-ons? Everything I said online says not to go with the cheaper Chinese components because of power surges when the backup battery switches power can sometimes actually set those parts on fire...

not sure if sarcastic or not

here's the deal:

R-1, R-2 are relay contacts which apply connection from car to the battery in question. These are connected magnetically to RC1/RC2 - relay coil 1, relay coil 2, which are selected by s3, s4 (dash mounted)

s1-1 s1-2 is just a double pole single throw switch for some voltmeters shown in recommended location on the wiring.

now, for the diodes.

D1, d2 are your charge diodes. they don't allow any electricity back into the car, but will charge both batteries from the alternator at the same time, even if the contactor is not pulled in, while not allowing the battery to drain. These NEED, NEED, NEEEEED to be rated to something like, 20 amps probly. or something, whatever. shit. you should probably put a fuse in line with them. Honestly, what i'd do is parallel say, 5x 6a rated diodes in a blob and call it good.

D3, d4 should be 6a diodes. These just ensure that your dash switches always have power to pull in the contactors, lest you get into a 'stupid loop' so called.

You'll know you're in a supid loop when one of two things happens, your relays go CA-CA-CA-CA-CA-CACHUNKA or alternatively, nothing.

I'd recommend investment into some in-line fuses for this shit, some cheap chink stuff or whatever. a 300, 400 amp fuse or something will work wonders for saving your skin when you accidentally drop a 3/8ths pittsburg wrench across your bus bars because you (and neither do i) have enough time to disconnect negative cable from one battery let alone two.
>>
>>16566770
if you can be a smarty and not a moron and remember to turn the batteries off when you leave the damned truck, then just use two 12 volt continuous duty 100 amp or whatever tin can contactors. They'll probably not weld together when you start the truck, but if you're worried you might want to get not the $11 on ebay chinese ones.

you need something to switch the batteries or else you might as well just go get one better battery.
>>
>>16566862
Dxs seem like exactly the thing I need and would be spending most of my money on when getting my $350 packages mentioned: >>16566770. Can I get these diodes from regular electronic hobby shoppes or should I look on ebay and amazon for specific vehicular ones? I'd be extremely hesitant on putting something carrying potential 200amps within the firewalls of my hood without the heat rating.

How do I go about wiring the switches? Jumpstarts? The thing is that I have long enough jump cables so I can save that much...

I mean, I could just shove all this wiring in a box somewhere underneath my skidplates and only have the wires going into the hood. I plan on having the second battery under my rear quarter panel directly in front of my driver's side wheelwell.

BTW. It is incredibly helpful. I would NEBER post a sweetswift sarcastically ): (but fuck did I hate first year non-Newtonian physics)

Do you have this system in your (car?) or is it just something you've seen done before?

don't mount on firewalls, i'd mount inside the engine bay somewhere.

Electronic hobby shops are good, I recommend gateway electronics out of saint louis.

mounting the diodes - depends on what you get. Honest, maybe just waste a little money and get commercial diode bridges, you get four diodes in one, in a convenient shaped package which can often be found with standard crimp-connector compatible prongs coming out of it that will bolt up nicely.

switches? they usually have screw terminals suited well for a ring terminal end. you can get nice toggle switches pretty cheap.

Jumpstart - just switch a battery on and jump normally.

I ain't built something this way exactly but i did a shitty robot with a dual battery setup once. I also rewired an entire ford pinto without following any diagrams using only white wires and terminal blocks and it works or something.

Alternatively, I may just order the parts on Sunday and see what the community radio building autists think of my (your) design. I used to be one of them but they got kinda weird since none of them left their houses doing electrical work for power companies.

Anyway, happy Friday, anon! I'm very, very glad that it's possible to do the build for this under for like $300 shopped.

As a last question. How much waste heat does this generate?

Also interested in a dual battery setup, but I admit I'm a noob in electrical engineering and am still learning.

It seems the most common route is to have a 2nd 12v circuit powering the Misc stuff to be used while the truck is off. Not sure on this...

I would like to have one 12v circuit for everything, so I can use the start battery to run misc stuff, or have the aux battery start the truck in an emergency. The plan would involve some sort of isolator switch to cut one or both batteries from the circuit to prevent drain.

How would one go about doing this?

I do a lot of hiking and started getting into wildlife photography, and would like a car/wagon/SUV that I can take with me off-road from time to time

What's the best daily driver that's comfy for driving to work (only like a 6 mile drive so has mileage isn't a huge concern) that I take can off-road without much concern?

I live in the south, so not much snow but we get a shitton of rain so not getting stuck in mud would be nice.

A decent Toyota 4runner/Tacoma/pickup will run you between $2500 and $6000+ depending on year condition ECT. Toyotas are Good rigs but way overpriced for what you get imo. Also stay away from the 3.0L v6

Early Isuzu rodeos are good

Dodge ramchargers, Chevy blazers and Ford broncos are good choices as they are shorter than their single cab short bed truck counterparts

But I don't want to lose towing capacity for comfort. I can't see any reason not to flip the stock shackle and get a zero rate block vs spending $400 on the kit that guy offers. His looks very beefy and offers more lift but, seriously, $400.

>Anyone done a shackle flip here?
Yes.

Theoretical capacity will be reduced, but should still be far greater than rated capacity.

Had no idea what he was talking about in regards to dropping both front and rear hangers.

DIY flip is free, but provides very little lift.

Longer shackles are cheap lift, but have to be obnoxiously long, will increase sway, and are often flimsy/cheap which can be an issue if you're towing or have a lot of weight in the bed.

You DO want angle on the shackles. Straight vertical at ride height is bad for compression shackles regarding ride quality.

Buy cab lights and tow mirrors.

I should probably clarify that. I knew what he was trying to say, but he was wrong.

its just the "expo" crowd in general.
there are plenty of faggots with brand new JKs and land rovers doing the same thing. i really like the idea behind overlanding (even though that word basically makes me cringe at this point) but as it grows in popularity its getting dragged through the shit by normies.
WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO COOL HOBBIES. I SWEAR TO GOD IF ONE MORE FAGGOT ASKS ME WHAT MY INSTAGRAM TAG IS ILL KILL MYSELF

its absolutely disgusting desu

I was so glad when I didn't need to put an extra leaf into my rear suspension on Taynger. 4inch wide tyres fit snuggly into the back but am considering getting key out of the front to give myself another 2 inch body (leveling) lift. I know I can just hank up the torsion bars but ride quality is somewhat important for me since I run insane distances on the highway and mudd or spintyres when I get to my destination.

Bed capacity is reduced. If you're using it as an offroad rig, that shouldn't be too big for your concerns, desu.
I don't think this affects tow rating, though - has anyone encountered issues towing a boat after lifting?

DO NOT SHACKLE LIFT

Since you axle orientation is tied into the leaf position, lifting/lowering the leaf on one end will change you axle degree wish in tern will change pinion angle and cause drive train vibrations and excessive wear on drive train components.

That's what all the Rangerfags do. But they also don't have to drive 900miles this week and offroad for 50 miles when you get to your destinations... Taynger has special needs
*shudders at the thought even though it's just Saturday*
Probably going to get the keys replaced and then put the torsion bars DOWN for half an inch, actually.

Taynger's from 2010 and it's at 191k right now.
Gonna do an engine rebuild (or even replacement) at around 225-250k and probably switch out the trans at 300k.

Thank God it's the '10 SOHC as I haven't heard any issues with their gaskets/ seals shooting a head through the hood like the 2000 - 2006 (or even 08) models have. They seem to have issues when they hit the 100k (km) mark - especially with the 3.0 V6s.

Also, lmao. You literally just buttblasted me for being a leaf and you didn't realise that my numbers were in kilometers and not miles. The odometer is at 118k miles if that makes a difference (: C'mon bae. I expected more from you.

Oh also, I just got the rear axles built from the Canadian winters salting my bearings and all. After how many klicks (or miles) do I have to do a diff. oil change? Shit's getting cold again and I don't really want to redo this stuff...

im an american, i thought all leaves knew we are incapable of not applying our own culture/way of life to everything

>After how many klicks (or miles) do I have to do a diff. oil change?
if youre not doing a lot of water crossings, most maintenance schedules just say "inspect." so basically just verify it doesnt look like shit every 10k miles or so and go from there. if youre paranoid i think changing every 30k is probably a good idea
>>
Somebody buy this. It's 2500 miles away from me and I just can't do that kind of a road trip in the middle of winter.

That was an anecdotal story of the worst case situation. I used to play CS:GO with him until he got a family and kids. Lost touch with him now.
He did a clutch drop and it blew a gasket sending the head not through the hood but like denting it significantly. the engine kept spitting out combustibles and sent the oil through the entire hood essentially melting all the components and almost started a few electrical fires.
Other stories are just simple wear and tear on issues with the newer SOHCs that replaced the OHVs. They start to show themselves at around 100mi area until Ford / Mazda put their foot down on the 2008 models.

From what I hear, all of the fleeter Rangers were perfectly fine since they would be traded in after 50k miles. But once the second hand Rangers started blowing up years later, they had to do something about it so that people would still buy the Rangers. Shame they discontinued it right after 2011, though.
The bluebook value for Taynger is around $14k right now and the mileage puts it down to around $12-12.5k.

I guess I should invest in some air lockers, eh? I have to replace the differential cover anyway since it's starting to rust from the bottom. I might even put a thin later of titanium as diff. armour.
>>
>>16573859
They're much comfier.

>>16573893
Also since we're at image limit and I'm drunk ranting, I might as whale go on about the relative issues.

I had a Colorado before this. The I-5 was a great sound especially when you rev it up to 6000 when the engine is at -10degrees C (I know I shouldn't do it but it was neat).

The chevrolet coolant systems uses these plastic nipples and I'd have one break every once in a while. It was at 80k kilometres when I sold it to buy Taynger. It proved to be much more annoying than the Ranger builds and it actually had more underside rust and rot than my Ranger of 3x the mileage.
>>
>>16573913
Oh and before anyone asks, yes. I coated that mofo with grease.

I ended up selling the I-5 2wd, basic features with destroyed rear quarter panels, shot battery, half a rear bumper, and horrid body rust for just under $8000, too.
