TBF they were only making sedans and wagons here weren't they? They could've made some quality cars that people wanted (ie not V8 commos) and they'd probably still be around today. Even if that means crossovers and hatchbacks.

If Volvo of Sweden can be competitive and make genuinely nice cars, I don't see why Holden couldn't. Mind you I imagine a lot of the decisions came from GM, probably screwed them over a bit.

I still don't understand how the Jap's make their cars so good. Our family has had many used cars, including an 89 Caprice, 87 Dodge Lancer, Ford F150, 96 Cirrus, and an 04 Mazda 6. All those cars had major mechanical problems with them as time went on, yet our 92 shitbox Camry that was literally saved from being sent to the junkyard with 250K+ miles on it was the one that would never give us any major problems. And even so, the only thing it was sent in for was for a timing belt replacement once it broke - twice.

GM makes a better product than Toyota, charges a lower price and yet they are outsold, does anyone trust the veracity of these numbers?

That wouldn't kill the industry. Americans don't really care where the vehicle itself is made, more about where the company is based out of.

Nafta if anything should have helped vehicle sales by reducing prices, which it did. Problem is not many people want to drive a heavy plastic filled domestic product.

People want a good product, no trade deal can make people want to buy an inferior product

Your issue is that it takes american jobs. My response to that is that if you want to protect the jobs, stop trying to prevent an economic movement. I'm sure blacksmiths who made horseshoes were fighting tooth and nail against the automobile but the fact of the matter is that the market determines things like this. Forcing domestic companies to manufacture domestically instead of Mexico or Canada means that the same cost is now put on the only other side of the equation, the consumer

You say that what car took the top spot in 2015 as the most American-Made car with over 75 percent of its parts and manufacturing coming from the United States?

What was the best selling car of 2106 in the USA?

The Toyota Camry answers both questions. People weren't buying it for the looks or interesting drive.
>>
>>16547725

Checkout his picture title.
>>
>>16547892
No people buy the Camry/Civic/corolla because they're cheap to operate, cheap to buy, well equipped, get good gas mileage and are reliable as old faithful.

If you asked the average person where those cars are made, they'd usually be baked that they were produced in the US.

>>
>>16548009
and you've figured out the inherent problem with all of america
>>
>>16548054
It kind of does, some Americans feel a sense of patriotism and supporting American companies even though they also make cars completely outside of the US. I also believe that marketing teams can effectively market a shit product that people would buy even if it's shit. Mix that with things like consumer reporting being unreliable as fuck in determining whether a car is good or not the only thing you can really rely on is your own research and what you already know. The car Industry isn't apparent enough for Companies like Gmc to go under for their shit quality

Winning the popular vote gives you political capital, it does not hand you the keys to the kingdom.
Clinton campaign was overconfident, had a smug convention party, then skipped persuasion of undecided voters in key states. Trump campaign fucked up a lot but pulled out way ahead in the end because of rallying the base, bringing new retards into their coalition, and their state GOP allies' continuing voter suppression of democrats via voting location closures and purging, as they have done since the Roberts Court gutted the VRA. Russian collusion likely but icing on the cake - more relevant to new admin's post-election policy.

Either that or privately import individual cars. But no simple Chevrolet or Ford dealerships or anything like that

They sold 30,000 between 1995 and 2000.
The JDM Cavalier also had things you could not get on the American ones:
folding mirrors
wider front fenders
different seat fabric
a molded cover for the inside of the trunk lid
unique tail lights because JDM regulations require an amber turn signal

They all came exclusively with the Oldsmobile 2.4L Twin Cam Quad 4 engine (except 1995 models. Those got a 2.3L Quad 4) from the American spec Cavalier Z24.

Because of the engine's displacement, it couldn't be sold as a compact car in Japan (2.0L being the max engine size allowed in compacts there, so it was subjected to higher taxes. They marketed the Cavalier as a luxury car in Japan instead.

Trump is referring to Japanese makers building US spec models in Mexico and Canada. If they want their cars sold here, they need to bring manufacturing here

Please just fucking kill yourself. Toyota builds cars in Mexico because the plants in the US that build them are at capacity. Rather than spend a ton of money expanding existing facilities, they shift it where they have availability to assemble.

Trump needs to put his money where his mouth is and buy and hire and manufacture his own garbage American. Until he does that he is just an orange prick duping rubes.
>>

Really showed me by crying more. Maybe you shouldn't hire retards that fall for PUT PASSWORD HERE PLS TY emails.
>>

>Rather than spend money expanding facilities...
Too bad, we'll slap a tariff on it. More jobs for us, less for Mexico. You mad, Pedro?
>>
all this shit is gonna do is cause ALL new car prices to rise
>>
>>16552182
Toyota is too big of a company to give a fuck about a tarrif
They will just threaten to import materials instead of using American made materials and out source all the work they can, and pushing any increase of price onto the customer

Toyota can bluff harder than some failed orange businessman
>>
>>16552230
As if they weren't already rising.
>>
The real wakeup call will be when the japs sell their american factories and start importing their cars at higher pricepoints. When all you americans are stuck with american made cars because japanese cars are priced at a premium you'll be a world of suffering.
>>
>>16552297

Americans are already "stuck" with American-made cars, Toyotas included.
>>
>>16552297
And they would do that why?
>>
>>16547080
Most Jap cars for sale in America are made in America anyway, tard.
>>
>>16550783
You're a fucking idiot.

Japan is insanely protectionist and has a lot of cultural pride.
With good marketing the US could easily sell a good number of cars in Japan. Space has nothing to do with it. The Japanese make fuck hueg cars.

Everyone compares the 80's Japanese cars to modern day American ones and it's stupid.
The Japanese aren't cheaper, more reliable, smaller, or more efficient.
>>
>>16552716
>The Japanese aren't cheaper
nissan has a 11k shitbox. mitsubishi has a 13k shitbox that gets 43mpg
more reliable than dodge gm or ford trash
>>
>>16552727
>nissan has a 11k shitbox. mitsubishi has a 13k shitbox that gets 43mpg
and they have no options whatsoever. If you option them up to the equivalent American competitor with the same feature, they will cost you more.
>>
>>16552731
huur they dont come with gm onstar
>>
>>16552739
have you ever driven those base model Mirages or Versas? radios are a fucking option. power windows are an option. EVERYTHING is an option. They are price leaders used for advertising that no one buys. If you equip it similarly to an American Fiesta, Spark or Sonic, it will be more expensive.
>>
>>16552250
More importantly Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil the EU.... will all respond with tariffs against US products. The result will be fewer exports damaging the US economy and imports will be more expensive damaging the US economy.
>>
>>16552748
>radios are a fucking option.
Nope
>power windows are an option.
Nope not since the 90s.

His MAGA caps and other campaign shit were MUSA, but those often had massive manufacturing delays because the American textile industry doesn't have enough capacity left to handle large orders. It's not even a matter of price anymore, because supply chain, logistics, tariffs, and other costs drive the price of doing business in China up enough that it almost destroys what you saved in paying for labor, and the cost of labor in China isn't as great as it used to be, either. The reason why most Kickstarters for manufactured goods fail is because the people in charge think that it's cheap n' easy as fuck to get shit made in China, when the reality is that it's really fucking hard and you will get your shit pushed in if you go there without a bunch of very experienced and trustworthy people helping you.

The problem in the US is that we don't have much factory capacity or available workers. But I think that's naturally going to change as it starts making more sense for midrange companies to relocate back to the US or move to Central America. The cheapo clothes makers like H&M have moved to places like Bangladesh.

I dunno. Both of the companies are getting better and are still dominant in the big car business over here but it's going to be a while before they can challenge the Japanese on smaller cars. That might change for GM since Chevy Bolt is looking pretty good and if GM doesn't screw up on the reliability aspect, it could get them back in the game.

>>16547071
wait what?
if there's less cars, prices will be higher
