I had never thought about it until I saw videos of people driving in the us.
The answer is that roads are very different around here. Traffic lights aren't in huge, wide open intersections (we'd use roundabouts there). They're usually on narrower roads in cities, so turning right on a red would be much more dangerous.
There are some intersections where you can turn right, indicated by a flashing right arrow under the main traffic lights.
