I've been in the market trying to find some mazda3 or 6 mainly since they're the easiest to get leather seats on, but now I'm starting to look into used corollas since it's not like every cloth seat had someone take a shit on it.

How reliable is this chart for picking model years? I'll probably pick up the XRS trim which should be the highest for Canada.

too bad it also happens that the cleanest one I've seen is a 2009 model (https://www.bulletproofauto.ca/inventory/2009-toyota-corolla/2326512/)

The Corolla XRS introduced in 2009 as a successor used the 2.4L 2AZ-FE from the Toyota Camry and Scion tC and was available with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. While the 2009 Corolla XRS caters to a greater range of customers with the available automatic transmission it is also significantly slower and although its design intentions are similar, it is a different car from the original 2005–2006 Corolla XRS.
fuck what does this mean? 2009 sucks balls basically?

and from what I understand, it's going to be hard as fuck to find a 2005-2006 XRS. I might find a clean Mazdaspeed6 before that.
>>
>>16544027
Tons of white smoke before but after doing a compression test today, most of the white smoke is gone. It's only present when I take off from a stop. More and more questions.
>>
>>16545188
Yes. The 05-06 XRS used the 1.8L 2zz, with a 8100 redline. It made 170hp and was only available with a 6 speed manual.
The 09 XRS used a Camry engine.
>>
>>16545517
welp i'm sold then.

only thing I have to check now is insurance quotes and how much it will cost to get the transmission or engine replaced on one considering there's only a bit over 1000 sold in Canada.

Went and got the estimate from the insurance adjuster. He said 3k but he also lowballed it because the guy who hit me and the motorcycle had the minimum coverage so it's splitting 10k between a totaled motorcycle and the damage to my car, and because I guess if the damage was worth more than the car they would've counted it as totaled and just given me the amount the car is worth.

I'm worried it's going to get into the shop and they'll find something else that'll drive the cost up and I'll be SOL

And I deploy soon so I need this taken care of yesterday. FUck drunk drivers /o/

Both turbo. He pretty much said that he wouldn't replace the headgasket as the rings could be fried, head could be warped, needs to be machined etc. He did say that he'd do the work on the weekend to not charge me tax though. He seemed like an honest cool guy. Owns an R32 as well as a big single turbo mk4 supra drift car.

I'm leaning towards 7m as I already have a downpipe and ARP hardware for it and with 60k km on it the motor should be reliable as long as it's retorqued.

Anyone here got experience with the ES300? I'm looking at a second gen for a comfy, reliable DD and these seem to fit the bill pretty well. They're not as quiet as the LS' I've tested, but I can't find a single one of those in decent condition in my budget up north.
>>
So I'm looking to buy a used FR-S/GT86/BRZ so that I can put a Jackson Supercharger in it. However, Should I be looking for one with the Sport-tech package? I can't find online a simple checklist of what comes in the Sport-tech over the base model.
>>
>>16554715
Have you checked the manufacturers websites?
>>
Is the bolt-on TRD centrifugal supercharger kit for 2AZ-FE engines worth it? I'd rather not buy performance kit that's overpriced or chink shit that damages my engine. At least I know this will provide OEM reliability and compatibility.
>>
>>16553969
The second gen is the ES330, not the ES300. Very quiet, very smooth, very reliable. Literally a Camry though.
>>
>>16556109

>>
>>16556401
http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/project-car/sccp-0607-project-scion-tc/
>>
>>16556589
I've read it before. Thought I'd ask /o/. I don't know what the performance bump from 160hp to 200hp feels like on that size of a vehicle.

I've only experienced 210hp on a ES300, which is basically the same car. Obviously the V6 is going to have more torque.
>>
>>16557513
Is it the only car you have?
>>
>>16553969
Had an ES350, it was great.

272hp, surprisingly quick, mushy as fuck ride/accel/brakes but that's what you're signing up for with an ES/LS/older Lexus.

Super comfy, perfect GT cruiser type of car, i.e. long roadtrips, non-sporty driving.

Even when thrashed recklessly, you can learn the limits of the car relatively easily because it has more power than grip, and massive bodyroll/understeer, so you'll feel it getting loose even at relatively low speeds, like taking a hard hairpin at 25-30mph for example.

man, is there any way to make a black car look decent?

There's a 2006 XRS for $5K canuck dollars (US$3.8K) that seems cool if I can get over the fact that it's black. I'd have preferred boring grey.

all I'm worried now is that insurance is expensive for this car and how I'll even know if it's in good condition since this would be my first manual car if I get it.
>>
>>16559297

208K km. Mostly highway miles

That's worrying for me too since it's a high revving engine so I probably should not expect Corolla reliability.
>>
>>16559297
I don't see how it would be expensive. It's a four door 1.8L.
>>
>>16559836
It's 30% higher than a mazdaspeed6 which I'm considering based on online quotes (something like $7K annual because I am 23 and only started driving recently). What I'll actually pay for insurance will hopefully be a smaller portion of that if I get my dad to be the primary driver.

I'm in Ontario so I will literally end up paying the cost of the car in insurance within a year even without comprehensive/collision.

Moving out is not an option yet, and that will only cut insurance down to maybe $2500-$4000 annual.

I got them on Kijiji. I've been looking for these wheels for about a year now, so it's just a matter of chance if they're gonna show up. >>
>>16566240

>>
>>16566261
Another 7M. I thought about a 1J but I don't think it's worth it with an auto trans. less torque and more expensive to make horsepower with until like 500.

7M is faster from a dig and I shouldn't have problems with the headgasket considering the new headbolts and stuff I bought.

Yeah, I was considering swapping a 1jz but it's looking pretty expensive right now. I might just try to reseal and rebuild my 7M to be a bit stronger. I'm not concerned about horsepower right now, I just want a more reliable engine.
>>
>>16566513
It'd make sense if I was doing a VVTI swap or something but at that point I should just go 2J and I don't have money for either. dealing with shitty delaminating turbos or trying to ebay my way into a big single setup sounds way harder than just adding injectors and a modified stock turbo and making 400HP.
>>
>>16566523
Yes, I agree. When you get your improvements done, you should post some pics, I'd like to see how you have it set up after.
>>
>>16566593
I will. I'm still trying to decide whether I should keep the suspension stock, use the original struts and lowering springs and see how long until they blow, or buy some cheap coils. I know the ma70 race cars had super stiff suspension to counter act the semi-retarded suspension design. Not really a race car driver though and tems is pretty comfy for a daily.
>>
>>16566615
I would recommend new suspension. You probably don't need coilovers but new struts would be good.
I wish my supra came with TEMS, I got seat heaters instead.
>>
>>16566737
Problem is you lose TEMS with new struts unless you buy tokicos Illumina 2's which are discontinued. They're very expensive now.
>>
>>16566963
in that case, new springs might be better then... It would suck not to have TEMS on your car

Any tC2 owners lurking?

>>16551025 here, just got off the phone with the insurance company. With the amount of damage and the KBB value of the car they want to call it totaled and just give me the KBB value.

I expressed that there's mods and it's above the KBB value for this reason, and now they're trying to work with me to raise the value of the car so it won't be in the "totaled" region with the cost of repairs and I can just get it repaired.

Assuming that doesn't work out though, and they gave me a little over 3k, there's some tC2's in my area between 10k-13k depending on the year/mileage, which I would most likely end up buying to replace the box due to the bullet proof engine, still technically having a hatch, and basically being a camry with a less boring design. I know the tC1 had some oil burning issues, can any tC2 owners here comment on the car though, how they like driving it, any problems they have, etc? Most online reviews basically just say it's a sportier looking camry and not much else, so I'm looking for some more insight.

>tfw I don't wanna lose my box but paying 3k+ to repair a car that's technically worth 3k with almost 200k miles just doesnt seem worth it
>>
>>16569127
I'm quite a fan of it. It's not like it's actually any maintenance, it just werks, like an iPhone or something. Mk3 Supra suspension geometry is kind of silly so it benefits from reducing articulation, but you don't really want it to be as stiff when you're driving through a shitty downtown road doing 40.
>>
>>16569168
Personally I'd just move on. Maybe buy something fun to help myself get over it. Like fucking the first girl who'll give you the time of day after a break up.

>>
>>16569127
From what I understand, it's not much of a hassle to maintain it aside from finding the right struts when they need replacing is difficult and expensive.
But it basically changes suspension stiffness so if you are driving around a city casually you can have softer suspension and a more comfortable ride. Then when you want to get some more speed and handling out of it you can stiffen up the suspension.
Plus who doesn't like flipping a switch into R A C E M O D E

>>
I was idly looking at wikipedia since I'm curious about the Celica. My interest went right out the door when I found out the last gen GT-S had the same engine as my gf's matrix. The A40 looks sexual tho

>>

No, this is still the Cusco one without the harness bar,
>>

Ah I see. I guess you can't really swap that bar around without cutting/welding.

Toyota Sera.
The closest thing I could find to a Tercel in Gran Turismo.

I'd love to drive one in downtown Chicago with that glass roof would be dope

I realized while grabbing pictures of my cars I don't have any decent ones so I'm going to upload new ones soon.
>OP would you rather me upload these individually or can you crop out the cars?
1986 Cressida
1999 Corolla

Also have a 94' Tercel but somehow have 0 pictures of it.

>If anyone is interested I have TIS so I can upload any diagram or manual from any 96'+ Toyota/Scion and some older. I can check recalls, TSBs and recorded work history too.
I'll be lurking for the next hour.
>>
>>16585401
We move slow here at /TG/ especially at night. Nice to have another person around though.

What are your thoughts on the MX73 Cressida wagons?

Thinking of buying one as a project car. I might have to DD it if my current DD dies.

Yes I know they are almost unicorn-tier rare.

Thank you for your time.

My project car at the moment is a beat up old '85 Corolla, and it needs a lot of work. I'm thinking about saving up and buying a Lexus SC300 or LS400 for my dd while I work on it. I plan on keeping it around as my dd for quite a while. Does anyone have experience with these? What are your thoughts?
>>
>>16587196
Great cars. Plenty of grunt from the 1uz. SC's are surprisingly sporty and comfortable at the same time.

>>
>>16587202
I'm not too fond of the SC300's frontend, mainly the headlights. Are there any major comfort or power drawbacks of the LS400 vs the SC300?
>>
>>16587298
Ls400 is heavier, more comfy, less sporty. You'll be happy either way for a DD.
>>
>>16587450
Does it still have a decent kick to it? As much as I need a daily driver I can't imagine driving another weak baby car like my family's old prius.
>>
>>16586894
Nah just pic the ones you want to use. I'm not anal about image sizes. As long as they're bigger than 4"x2" lol
>>
>>16587211
Just torque it properly
>>
>>16587465
I've never driven the ls400 but I'd bet it does. Can't be that much heavier than the SC. Plus, with an exhaust they make a beautiful sound.

ARP head studs really do wonders even with OEM gaskets.
>>
>>16586105
Fucking love wagons, I've seen a few Cressy wagons in MA.
It depends on what you want to do with it though.
You could do a nice sleeper.
The 7MGTE nearly bolts in at least it has the same mounts asthe 5M, you'll need a harness and ECU to run it but it's simpler and cheaper than a 2J and can still make stupid power on the cheap.
My own take on it is get a 5 speed (W58/R154) into it as fast as possible, I drove my sedan for 2 months automatic and constantly wanted to smash my face against a brick wall before swapping it.
>>
>>16587976
My mechanic thinks in better served to torque the stock ones unless I'm gonna do the whole headgasket. I think he's right. I have the ARP's and I'll just do the headgasket in the summer but for now it'll be torqued down tight on the stock bolts and only pushing 12psi.

I'm looking to buy an Invidia N1 Catback once I pick up my new FT86. What are recommended catback exhausts?

>>
>>16588250
2nd gen/3VZE 3.0L. From what I gather the BVSV/EVAP system is only for emissions and not any actual fuel system function. Might be a fuel pump issue for yours
>>
>>16534452

>>
>>16581341

>>
>>16588020
ONLY 12 psi? Are you fucking retarded? OEM is 7lbs. If you do MLS hg + ARP head studs then do 12. Does your mechanic know youre pushing more than factory? To be fucking honest i wouldn't say the same so your dumbass comes back to me and I can drain your fucking money.
>>
>>16588654
The general consensus is that about 15 psi can be held just fine on the stock headgasket if it's a healthy motor that's been torqued properly. 10 psi is where you get with mild upgrades such as intake, exhaust, etc. Yes, my mechanic does know. In fact, he asked me what I would like to run and I told him and he said it should be fine. He also owned mk3, and now owns an r32 GTR and a mkiv supra single turbo drift car, so I trust him, as well as most of supra fourms.
I didn't meant to offend you anon, chill out. Damn.

>>16588957

>>
>>16589272
Fair. You did. If it blows up I'll let you know that you were right if you'd like. It's perfectly possible, you're right, but my autism and youthful optimism tells me it'll be alright.
>>
>>16587298
Both are very comfy, the SC is a bit faster and handles a bit better due to weight but all in all neither are slow.

Hmm
>>
>>16587298
this is pure benchracing eyeballing of wikipedia but in the 1UZ in the SC is a tiny bit more powerful than the mustang (comparable weight) of the same era. The LS is about 400lb heavier which isnt the end of the world.
>>
>>16590504
It also sounds better, is more "refined" and is better quality than a comparably priced stang. Although the interior lights do burn out a lot. Don't get me wrong. I do like mustangs, but the SC and LS is a lot more luxury gt than youthful muscle/Hoon car.

Shitty mods and the damage done by them.
Normal used car stuff, tire wear, fluids, listen very carefully for funny noises, I assume it's a high mileage pile so make sure it starts normal when cold.

A friend of mine makes these on the side to fund her s14 build. This was the last one with this fabric though since its been discontinued but she's got some others that pop up. If you Google, thingstaylored it should pop up as a bigcartel site.

New motor is almost ready. Head bolts was already torqued apparently. Going to run it without the boost controller for a while. Wouldn't want to suddenly stress a motor that's been sitting in a warehouse for who knows how long.
Anon may have a point about 12lbs being a lot. We'll see what it's like with just the intake and exhaust for a while.
