used to be aussie made with the kingswoods

then went to these

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Rekord_Series_E

Then these

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Omega

then

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Zeta_platform

now we're currently at these (LHD only)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Alpha_platform

So we never got them because GM doesnt have a fucking global lhd/rhd platform still in 2018 model year

Fucking retarded

so we got this instead

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Insignia

Its a decent platform and the germans seem to strap big turbo's to them and get alrite performance out of the i4t and v6 twin turbo

40 years of wog wear and neglect does everything

the sedan has been looked after mechanically for a long time but the last 5 years or so must of been rough on it with the farmers using it as a tow car, jacking up the rear end and carrying horsefloats through the adelaide hills. I restored proper suspension heights but the bushes needed replacing. I only go on /dat/ to bitch about them but in general its the greatest car ive ever owned. Its perfect imo

the wagon i bought as a long distance shit hauler. It has great paint and minimal rust. The motor is fucked big time from lack of maintenance. Apart from the engine itself everything else works perfectly with good suspension, chassis railing, interior and paint, in general its a decent car

>tl;dr the cars are old and neglected, so stuff breaks and i fix them. they're decent cars

Just as shitty as any other existance. Humans determine the ups and downs in their life based on past experiences and the more recent the experience the more value it holds, so every life, no matter how much better or worse it looks from your point of view, has ups and downs that feel equally shitty/good. I have crippling depression at time and i have weeks where i feel on top of the world.
>>
>>16521983
I do like the yaks.

Stone and woods pacfic ale is one i can highly recommend too.

I don't get to drink decent beer that often just because i have a few mates at various dan murphys and they sell me the out of date beer for like $3-4 a slab. So i mostly drink out of date generic beers.

>>16522047
You really don't want to daily an RX-7. You wait 5-10 minutes before you go anywhere for it to warm up, wait 5 minutes at the other end for it to cool down, piss through fuel and oil anytime you go anywhere, and ruin the engine the moment you modify it any don't remap it.

I love rotaries but you REALLY don't want one as your daily. If you're a student you almost definitely can't afford to own one as well.

Looking to buy a cheap (5k-6k), practical vehicle that is easy to wrench on and cheap to maintain. Mostly just for carting around dirt bike stuff, towing bikes, camping, fishing etc

So far thinking Subaru Forester, Subaru RS Wagon or maybe WRX/GT Foz, but I figure they'll all be heaps in my price range, Toyota Hiace, Toyota Hilux Twin Cab, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Mirage, R31 Wagon.

Any other suggestions?

There are things you can cheap out of and hit up eBay and buy from chen zheng china, but they all have to follow a pretty simple rule, it can't be a mechanically stressed item.

So no brakes/suspension engine internals/fuel system or anything steering related.

Pretty much body panels/wings or visual wank is it.

This, be prepared to make mistakes and potentially break expensive/hard to fix things

Its straight pipe bombed motor, not city friendly.

>>16522467

Ok here is what I try and drill into all Apprentices.

Double check all your work, I still do it.

Tighten the oil filter
Take your hand away
Recheck tension

Tighten sump plug
Take spanner away
Recheck tension

Hell for a few months go and get a torque wrench, set it to 25nm and tighten sump plugs with it just to get the feel of 25nm in your hands (most sump plugs are 25ish nm).

You will fuck up, you are new to this, but learn from it. Now you will likely NEVER leave wheel nuts loose again will you? Also the torque bar for your rattle gun is not enough. Have a actual torque wrench with the correct tension for that car (normally 110nm for cars) and check every fucking nut.

Stay ahead of your training, read your bloody study books, then read them again. Stay on top of your training paperwork shit because if you fall behind its your career on the line.

Read/Study/Learn and if you don't know, ask someone who does. Having too much pride to ask is a failure point.

Even now for brake bolts I will tighten by hand all the way until its 'home' before torquing them up.

Some other night tips, never rattle bolts out of alloy. There is a small chance they will pick up something and bind and pull the thread straight out.

Also never rattle together 304 stainless bolts and nuts, or really any chrome/nickle or plated nuts/bolts. Without using anti-seize, it will rip the plating off and then you have two metal surfaces with no air.

Causing an amazing phenomenon called cold welding normally only a concern in the vacuum of space and it will be stuck together FOREVER.

A lightweight bike that makes decent power and sounds great. Parts are cheap and they're relatively reliable. They're also one of the more sportsbike-esque LAMS bikes.

Not too long ago they were one of the fastest learner legal bikes. They're still one of the funnest.

Also for Apprentice Anon

Don't listen to the Snap-On truck guys lies, you don't need a 5000 dollar tool box, go buy a 2nd hand standard sized roll cab and top for under 500 bucks. Or just a cheap one from super cheap and buy some sweet stickers to make it go faster.

While snap-on are 'good' quality they aren't enough quality for the price they charge. Buy his BluePoint stuff instead, same factory different colour.

Ingersoll Rand 12v W1130-K2 3/8 gun is better than the snap on one and only 200 bucks with 2 batteries, I love mine.

Forch do a mini impact gun that out does my top of the line Snap-on gun for half the price and its tiny, weights nothing at all and smaller than your hand. Great for doing crank shaft bolts without removing the radiator.

Depends on the dealership, I've worked for Holden (they didn't) Honda (some did others didn't) Hyundai (one ugga dugga or two?).

But I guess being a "premium" brand its different, everything gets torqued, all bolts get a hit on the buff wheel if they are a little grimey, everything that has sealant gets it and everything with lock tight gets it.

But the 200ish an hour labor rate and vehicle/parts cost warrants it.

how well does a BA XR6 Turbo handle?

i currently own a 03 forester and it seems pretty good to go round backroads with, even if they have a bit of body roll. how would a ute like that hold up to a scoob or something similar?

thx in advance

>thingswealreadyknow
well this was back in my peaked smashed days

these days i just chill in my room alone getting drunk
>>
>>16522731
>how well does a BA XR6 Turbo handle?
like a boat

they cant stop, they cant turn but the straight line speed is insane

http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/54066-ba-xr6t-weight/

More people build commodores for drifting and track work.

A stripped E series with a barra swap is very common as is a VN-VT
>>
>>16522734
1785KG hahaha yeah i see your point

it would be cheaper to buy a rough wrx than to try and get something that heavy to corner well
>>
>>16522731
you have yo know the vehicle.

i can outdo guys on bikes in my falcon ute at the local hills.
you have to know the vehicle.
in the past i had my old mans van on three wheels around corners.

if you can drive an excell to 100%
but jimmy drives a c0m0d0re to 60%
you will beat him or push him to failure.

also handling mods

>>16522744
the average ss/ls1 vt-vx dunnydoor by comparison weighs only 1600-1680kg and the older falcadores even less

>>16522746
you know exactly where i am

i just dont trip anymore
>>
>>16522750
id get a ls1 commo if i could afford the fuel for it, my dads has a statesman that is pretty thirsty and he doesnt even put his foot down at all.
>>16522746
is there much suspension bits for utes? compared to the JDM cars there seems to be nothing
>>
>>16522763
because the stato is HEAVY

i drove one they are a literal land barge

http://www.users.on.net/~nweber/holden/wh/wh-specs.html

Weigh's about the same as the Failcon BA-FGX and its a long wheel base
>>
>>16522769
how the fuck does a statesman that has full of electric leather seats and other pointless heavy luxury shit weigh almost the same as a car that has none of that
>>
>>16522780
As ive said the weight difference is very deceptive

the LS1 VT-VX's look heavy and stock handle like boats but they actually CAN turn.

Granted they dont have a reputation for it and you'd need to bugger around with the front suspention to fit wide wheels and put in coilovers+adjustable sway bars.

Luckily i had a good base to start from i am looking at coilovers on the front only and Raised rear w/ heavy duty shocks as my current monroe shocks are gonna die on these roads anyway and my springs are settled as fuck
>>
>>16522763
the leafs are lighter than normies and hold more weight than loldens, BUT IMO ford made the front too soft and the rear to hard so as a comparo to the holden it will fail (for comfy handling), but when you adjust them it can be fun.
atm i am using to many or too much clutch ($$$) the options are almost limitless, you can change leafs for infinity, there are options for 4 or 5 link rear ends, all sorts.

need new leafs and new clutch atm, last heavy duty clutch lasted 2 years, and ruined the tailshaft in the mean time.
>>
>>16522792
whats your thoughts on coilovers?

i had them on the r33 and they wherent even dailed in and that handled amazing.

gonna eventually put a set on my dunnydoor but there are so many fucking brands
>>
>>16522786
are you talking about sedan or ute versions for the VT/VX commos? i dont drive like ken block so perhaps doing the same in an xr6t will also produce positve effects

>>16522792
yeah i think coilovers and fucking around with the leafs would be the way to go
>>
>>16522796
>whats your thoughts on coilovers?
dont cheap out, pay the price as cheap ones are beyond worthless, i was fucked by a china man due to coil overs.
>>
>>16522807
but if i switch to a 4 link rear end, i will also chop the the rear end.
15x15's baby.
still fit a motorbike down the middle, of the massive tubs, locked rear end, and a solid one piece tailshaft
>>
fuck trip dropped cbf putting it back on
>>16522810
Whats a good brand for my craplais?

>>16522807
Body roll is REALLY hard to control in heavy cars anon.

You will be always concious of it and you will need WIDE front tyres and a Square Tyre fitment setup (same size and width) to get rid of the understeer

i only have 245 R45 18x9" on my beast and it barely holds on the road because of the V8 torque and then the front end understeer from the fucking stupid factory cast and camber and steering angle is really annoying

First thing i am gonna do is get some new springs on the back and raise its ass up to minimise the stock Squat and hopefully dump the front camber as negative as i can, gotta research that.
>>16522817
>minitub falcon drift drag ute
do itt

sounds munted as fuck
>>
>>16522821
nah minitub for bigger rear wheels, locked for better grip.
body roll is hard to control but not impossible, perhaps modify your driving style to incorporate it, ie turn harder sooner anticipating some slide due to weight.
the harder your suspension the more wheel slip you will end up with as you are no longer absorbing your weight with springs but transfering straight to your wheels
>>
>>16522852
>ie turn harder sooner anticipating some slide due to weight.
thats what i did with my first set of 235 maxxis

they got assfucked in under a year

besides my roads are so bad i cant really do that otherwise it goes to snap understeer.

When i drive the 10min out to the local mountain it has a nice smooth road
>>
>>16522857
i cant tell you how to drive your car.
just as i cant tell you how to overtake some smart ass who claimed "350 at wheels" by slide overtaking him in a corner at 90kmh ( to prove a redundant point)
who cares when your tyres when wear out? burnouts? fun
drifting? fun
first ever 360 in front of german cunt? fun
tyres cost, who cares?
avoid the most shit roads obvs.
cant over exaggerate practice. the ol' initial D shows the lil bitch driving the same roads all the time, dooo this, drive the hardest roads all the damn time.
the only way to get better at something it to do the thing itself
>>
>>16522885
>i cant tell you how to drive your car.
Ironic because you just did

;3

But yeah i get what your saying

ive been driving my local shit roads for almost a decade and i still dont feel like i know them well enough.
>>
>>16522896
>perhaps
you dont like what im saying ignore me or my words, your choice
well follow people thru those same roads.
just try to keep pace.
in my areas some of the locals fly thru corners whether due to exp or a lackadaisical attitude to who may be on the other side.
>>
>>16522913
>lackadaisical attitude to who may be on the other side.
This is my main issue, there is enough road to play with even though its skinny as fuck in places with horrible surfaces (old corrogated tarmac and potholes) its the fucking nutty cunts coming the other way
>>
>>16522918
I mainly just hoon at night now

>No cops
>can just hear my car and nothing else
>can easily see oncoming cars lights and react accordingly
>roads basically all mine from 10pm-5am

parking today.
some old cunt on the wrong side of the road, i drive around him as he turns left to park.
i go on the wrong side road to go around him.

"right you silly old fuck, your blocking traffic by being on the wrong side of the road. . . "
"fuck off"
"FUCK YOU, YOU PIECE OF SHIT LEATHER COUCH, THE LOUNGE ROOM MISSES IS CENTRE PIECE"

I don't understand what exactly youre asking.
Why not tho, is yours v8? it's going on my s pack and it's my daily too. Just gotta get used to the fact that every time you turn a tight corner, you don't want to accelerate or decelerate as it will lock up.

Idgaf, race car lyfe cunt
>>
>>16523090
Sounds like I'll have my hands full with a 2 way as I already have a LS V8 to handle and a 6sp manual
