Anyone using a VR headset instead of a triple screen setup? seems like a cheaper more effective solution?
>>
>>16501793
In what way do you think a $600 screen strapped to your head is cheaper than 2 monitors?
>>
>>16501818
27" or 34" ultrawides are freaking expensive. 3 of them is definitely more expensive than an occulus. On top of that, you get more of your vision covered in screen with a vr headset.
>>

>>
>tfw find GT3 cars boring but they're the only thing i could actually drive worth a shit because i am bad driver
heck
>>
>>16501838
If you have the monitors mounted close enough you can easily get 180deg horizontal FoV with regular 27s, maybe even 24s. 34" ultrawide is like, full cockpit shit and way better than a blurry unreliable headset. 27" ultrawide is probably more than enough even if you're just sitting the monitor behind the wheel entirely but you'd have to do the math.

In iRacing with SMP for better performance right now shit starts clipping into the camera at higher angles and they don't let you go past 160deg. I get 150 with 20.5s sitting a couple inches behind the wheel rim, which means like a car three lanes over will be visible 1/5th of a car length later than at 180deg and for a car right beside me it's a couple inches or so.

Field of vision tends to be somewhat limited in race cars because of the safety equipment and seating position anyways, unless you have your driving camera jacked up like a shit head.

Is there good monitors for under $190?

I mean if you have one monitor you like you buy two more of those and maybe a stand/mount unless you're going full simdad. You'll need more GPU than one screen but that applies to VR too.

For me I couldn't live without at least two monitors anyways. I needed a 1080p monitor so I bought one, then over a year later it went on sale as a two pack so I bought the rest to replace my dying 16:10 monitor and ancient 5:4. (actually there's a super crappy way to make mismatched monitors work too)

Dude, you don't need ultrawides.
just get 3 24" displays with good contrast and response times.

you do not need FPS-tier monitors for racing games nor is an ultrawide necessary, you give up vertical space that you could have otherwise with three large 16:9 monitors. you also gain huge adaptability with three separate monitors. You could decide one day that your outer monitors will be sideways in portrait mode, for advanced shitposting, and when you take your computer places (who am I kidding?) it's easier to carry a 16:9 than it is an ultrawide and it's less likely to break.

Once you set it up and bask in the glory of a full-eye view in a game, the bezels melt away and the immersion is incredible. I have a curved monitor as my center screen, which nicely overlaps with my outer screens.
>>
How do you regain your fast, /ovg/?

Just spent 2 hours tryna touge on the track I've been practicing the past few nights. Despite having a lot of really good, clean, FAST runs last night and every other night this week, I'm just constantly fucking up/crashing tonight. Don't know if I just can't concentrate or what.

I'm getting pretty frustrated, here. Can not, for the life of me, figure out why I suck ten times harder than usual tonight.

>>
>>16502588
I haven't spent more than $150 individually on any of my displays.

LG L246WP: $30, thrift shop, mild ghosting but telescoping, rotating stand

Asus VX228: $109, BB, standard 60hz flat panel, nice color and contrast

Samsung CF24390, $140, Office Depot, curved meme screen, 75hz, high contrast and the curve actually helps the other monitors hide their bezels behind it.

A single GTX760 will drive at least 4 screens and play rFactor on all of them. It's far cheaper to go triplehead than it is to get a VR headset.
>>
>>16503971
Touge isn't real racing

>>
>>16503968
I'm willing to believe 144Hz would be nice in racing games because you are traveling a pretty significant distance every refresh on 60Hz and muh REAL LIFE SMOOTHS FOR REAL LIFE SIMULATIONS but I am not spending $1500 to find out.
>>
>>16504228
Can you still get the Asus VG248QE meme machine for $249.99 or has that ship sailed?

It really only matters in situations where the car is moving laterally to the driver's plane of view (for example, when jumping or drifting).
When the car is moving straight ahead the display isn't necessarily drawing a completely different scene every frame because there are parts that stay the same like the car cockpit, the "stripes" of the road, walls, and grass. Unlike an FPS or RTS where you're constantly looking around and a low refresh rate would cause tearing, the only time you'll only see tearing in a racing game if you're doing something ridiculous or the game itself is ridiculous.

a high response rate, high contrast, and high pixel density are the most important qualities for a simracing monitor because you need to be able to see all the way down the track and not have it degrade to a mess of pixels.
>>
>>16504246
Yeah, you're right, wasn't factoring that in.
>>
>>16504170
I'm up for Sebring in march
>>
>>16504249

The reason you buy a 144hz monitor is for how much smoother everything looks, not because "muh tearing"

I was playing one of the F1 games the day I got my 144hz monitor and it felt so much better after switching because of how much more fluid the image is

>The best reason for the incident limit is that it keeps racers mindful of getting them. Rarely is anyone ever DQ'd for the limit however, we see racers on twitch all the time getting incidents because of careless off roads and such and have to adjust their driving to avoid them. In my opinion any consequence for bad driving brings better driving. The incident limit is working as designed, I think it should be lowered!

t.Nim Cross, actual fucking retard

Well, the other way to take it of course is that they even more blatantly refuse to make Safety Rating more strict because it would mean less people having the necessary license to buy more crap, the only fucking thing that matters to iRacing.

The whole thing is that fucking Safety Rating exists to make people worry about accumulating incidents, if it isn't working then it's too forgiving. Incident limit just serves to pointlessly punish people for having a bad race, as if getting 15 incidents in two races is better than 17 in one. Moving every series up one notch (which is effectively no different than raising the CPI for each license) would reduce sales though so they try to spin us this garbage.

>Incident limit just serves to pointlessly punish people for having a bad race
That's not pointless.
>if it isn't working then it's too forgiving
Well I'm not the one starting out saying it isn't working. I would argue that it is working considering where series are placed on the license ladder. Note (on road side) 17x is about 1x/1minute of race time at rookie level, and about 1x/2minutes at B level (BSS); this is sufficient to weed out the complete retard tier drivers that get lapped in fixed miatas or don't have the mirror awareness or speed judgment to get past PCC/GTC. Like I said, I'd put a bunch of series (starting with kamel toe) up one license level but clearly I'm not running the place - if I were, the off-tracks would be drawn at all tracks as tight as they are at COTA/Spa, and there'd be 2x offtracks (not just 1xs) if you went off at the same spot a second time in one race, and the incident limit would be about 13 by the time you got up to the good C level series.
>>
>>16512366

>>
>>16512737

>>
>>16512366
You're retarded.

Incident penalties have to be spread out long term because it's a no fault system. You can easily get hit through no fault of your own multiple times in one race, but for a safe driver those will get averaged out over time. Policing it over a short length of time is fallacious.

Putting two wheels on paved runoff is already overweighted and results in people doing dangerous things to try to avoid a harmless wheel drop, making it the same as spinning is mouthbreather retarded.

>You're retarded.
I disagree.

>Incident penalties ... it's a no fault system.
I know, it's one of the reasons I like it.

>You can easily get hit through no fault of your own multiple times in one race, but for a safe driver those will get averaged out over time.
A safe driver to me is someone who doesn't 'get hit through no fault of your own' more than twice in one race - I can do that myself, it's not that hard. The last time I got 10x was last year's roarbeforethe24serverseatshit.

>Policing it over a short length of time is fallacious.
Well 17x in one damn race is fucking lots. That's three 4xs that were totes not my fault guise, and four harmless wheel drops.

>Putting two wheels on paved runoff is already overweighted
Not always, there's 1x offtracks that are worth .25 second when you use them. Turn 4 at Laguna Seca is probably the most famous one. If you don't waste incidents on bullshit and avoid the usual contact zones (like hue netcode), you can totally spend these catching someone late in races.

>results in people doing dangerous things to try to avoid a harmless wheel drop
Well I don't see this often at all. Considering you can go 5 seconds with all 4 in the grass and still only get 1x in a helluva lot of places, to me the people 'doing dangerous things to try to avoid' this can't plan two things - one, take the 1x without cranking the wheel while on reduced grip; and two, plan the corner better so you don't only realize you're headed for a 1xofftrack after you're already full throttle on exit.

>making it the same as spinning is mouthbreather retarded.
You mean my suggestion of repeated offtracks increasing to 2x per and thus equivalent to the 2x-loss-of-control right? Only retards get those 2x spins or would get those repeater-increased offtracks, and those people are the retards that have the most trouble making SR gains now. Giving those people more trouble attempting to stay in cars they can't keep on track isn't bad to me.
>>
>>16512976
>A safe driver to me is someone who doesn't 'get hit through no fault of your own' more than twice in one race - I can do that myself, it's not that hard.
You probably shouldn't have disagreed with being retarded if you were going to post something so mindblowingly stupid.

>Not always, there's 1x offtracks that are worth .25 second when you use them
Time gain has nothing to do with safety, that just says that I should make sure I cut that corner exactly 17 times in every race and gain 4 seconds. It's a completely broken way to police it.

>Well I don't see this often at all.
I imagine you don't when you are driving with a dildo up your ass 30 seconds away from any other car to protect your precious dildo rating.

Well, as it stands, you could if you wanted to - if you found it worth it. I don't particularly like this sort of thing, but it has been like this for a while and will likely continue to be.
>It's a completely broken way to police it.
Any of my suggestions (increase repeated off-tracks by 1x, reduce incident limit, or redraw the lines a bit) at least addresses it if not cures it.

So what exactly are your solutions for the SR system, or, better, what even is your problem with it or its effects on racing? All you've done so far this thread is call myself and Nim retarded and post anime.

Does anyone know what's going on with rFactor and the mod?
I've tried Tomthy's repack and a fresh rF1 install with carpack/skins/tracks and both copies of the game "Join Timed Out" upon connecting to the server on two different PCs.

Then make your own tracks in BallisticNG or something.
If you want a "sim-like" sci-fi racer then Wipeout is your best bet. Especially the zone mode is based purely on skill. It has boost-pads tho.

That's a pretty neat idea man.

how the fuck else do you expect a paper-thin floating engine to withstand a walltap at mach 1?

>but why can't it just be like my autistic french hot wheels rally simulator?
oh you mean the game with boost pads, ridge racer drifting and no contact whatsoever?

At least the guys who made Redout didn't sell out to fucking Ubisoft. Nadeo can suck a fat one.

>don’t forget our migrate to Steam for free offer will end on January 31st, 2017

Why would I want to do this and what happens if I don't?
>>
>>16515913
Yeah, got it working fine.
https://youtu.be/TqDacYtCs1k?t=507

The computer I'm using for this has a 2ghz AMD A6 with integrated Radeon 8400HD which is just barely capable of what I'm asking it to do. However, AMD's new stream software seems to work great with less overhead than OBS, and unlike Shadowplay, doesn't seem to require a fancy newish discrete GPU. Have to run rF at 720p to get a smooth framerate, but at that point it's smooth enough I can drive looking through the spectator's camera.

The quality seems to be about on par with a pirate tv stream of a real racing event, so hopefully the stream computer won't shit itself with more than one car on track.
It's just a shame Avex is a bunch of cunts and I'll get the stream taken down for playing Eurobeat.

Its free and all updates now only come through steam

If you dont you lose the ability to get rF2 on steam for free.

You're a fucking idiot. That's PRECISELY why you get a high-refresh monitor. The smoothness you describe is the absence of tearing. I think having vsync on has given you input lag to your brain.

You get a 144 hz monitor so you can play games at frame rates higher than 60 without tearing. Tearing occurs when the graphics card has pushed a frame to the screen but the screen hasn't finished drawing the last frame yet.
This happens when the game is running at greater than 60 FPS but the monitor only updates the screen at 60 hertz. This is really common with old games like rFactor on new, powerful GPUs.

When the screen updates at 144 hz, the effect is that the display looks smoother at all framerates because the screen is updating basically twice as fast as the GPU can shit out frames. Obviously a game running at 144FPS on a 144 Hz monitor will play like glass, but a 60FPS game on a 144Hz monitor will also be noticably smoother than on a 60Hz monitor, especially if the framerate fluctuates at all.

>what is v-sync
>>
>>16516827
If you use vsync you are cucking yourself.

As soon as your FPS dips down to 59 (which it will because with vsync on you have zero overhead) you've gotta deal with several tens of milliseconds of input lag.
>>
>>16516855
also if you buy a 144hz monitor and still use vsync you need to end your life

I did have an idea of recording the race, with the cameras focused on the most interesting battles as it goes on and then adding a broadcast overlay. Then after uploading it somewhere random people from the thread could commentate on it to make an official broadcast of the OVGT3 season.

You could even go one step above on the autism spectrum, and do stuff like this for historic series

Part of the fun was shitposting in the twitch chat I mean interacting with the commentators, then storming the commentary booth when the race was over. It's not as fun if it's not live

That video is gorgeous. Excellent commentary too.
It's a shame rFactor doesn't have an incident camera that automatically switches to cars overtaking or colliding and it all has to be done by hand. I've only ever seen this feature in Speed Dreams/TORCS.
>>
>>16516819

Why are you getting so mad? The smoothness isn't because of the absence of screen tearing it's because there are over twice as many frames being drawn on the screen. You can tell the difference between 60hz and 144hz just moving a window around the desktop
