hi guise,
need your expertise, I'm getting a ' 05 model Forester for my next car, need the space for bike projects and dat delicious awd here in winter.
I'm going to see one with 250K in the odo (SI system). 2l gasoline engine manual.
In good shape, no rust despite being Nordic.
So Tl:Dr: an old-ish and high-mileage Sub Forester - what problems should I look for and what questions besides the basics, do I need to ask the owner to avoid problems? Also, what to specifically look for during a testdrive?

No turbo = no sale

i have an 03 2.0 n/a. So far we replaced rear bearings, radiator and dash lights that went out.
It's a nice car, but it's slow as all hell. Maybe manual won't be so bad, but don't expect wrx-tier hooning

Serious post tho
the weak points of the EJ25 engine are the head gaskets. If they haven't been replaced, do not buy it. The leaky gaskets will manifest as an oil drip that lands on the exhaust and stinks.
Another thing to watch for is Torque Bind, which happens if the owners ran uneven/used tires. The center differential has to work extra hard because it thinks it's lost traction all the time, so it gets fucked up. This manifests as shuddering and shaking throughout the car while turning at low speeds. Do a few figure 8s in a parking lot and you'll know very fast.
Otherwise, Subarus are reasonably reliable because Subaru only uses 2 power/drivetrain configurations going at any given time, so they have tons of time to work out the kinks and perfect them. Tons of easy to find parts, though not super cheap.

heagasket meme applies to 2.5s not 2.0. My 2.0 has 190k miles on the odo with original hg and it runs fine
