>2.5dohc

I was just kidding around, but there's no way in fuck a 2.2 is in any way close to the rate of HG failure on the DOHC 2.5, it's easily the shittiest motor Subaru has ever made (up there with EA82T)

As a mechanic in Colorado, I've seen many many EJ22 Subarus with 200-300k on original head gaskets, I've never seen a DOHC 2.5 with over 100k on original HG's

>not even 4x140

>>
>>16481895
Ye true. They both fail, but the 2.5 fails much, MUCH sooner. So I'll give you that. That being said my 2.5 runs like a champ after rebuilding my engine at about 150k, and now I've racked up to about 350k miles on it

No I did not, I sold it to some guy near Atlanta. I lost his contact info a while back too. I look it up in the VIN threads now and then to make sure it hasn't been totalled.

I'm not sure how to track it down though; I've crawled through a lot of Georgia-related NASIOC and IWSTI threads but haven't seen it.

Thanks! I had to add the wiring for the city lights ( the ones lit up in that pic) though. I got an add a circuit and tapped it into the A/C fuse in the underhood fuse box so they're on with the key on, then put ring terminals on the ground side and bolted them down on one of the headlight bolts.

They're slightly brighter if you get the LED bulbs with diodes on the sides too instead of the bulbs that just have one facing forward that you get at an auto parts store, since that kind doesn't aim back into the reflector well.

You'll need to get some 9007 to h4 adapter harnesses on eBay though since yours had the two piece headlights. I had already converted mine to one piece since they were cheaper, but they were aftermarket and didn't last long. 9004 to h4 will work too, you just have to swap the pins around.

Another easy "mod" is the JDM side marker lights, you just tap them into the power and ground pins on the front turn signals and run the wire over the inner fender liner. You'll probably have to paint them though, since I don't think any Legacys were sold over there in that shade of dark green.
>>
Grocery getting runaround. Does ok.

It's the H6 and I've got a supercharger kit in the garage waiting to be bolted in.

Actually it's exactly how it works.

RHD headlights have cut offs on the right side so it doesn't blind oncoming traffic and the left side of the beam is angled upwards so you can see ahead on the side of the road.

Now put that on a LHD car and now the low beam is shining in people's eyes instead of on the side of the road
>>
>>16483388
Well then aim the driver side light down some so it's not in people's eyes and the passenger side up some so it's closer to where it would be normally.

>>
>>16483545
I was speaking in LHD terms, so you'd bring the spike on the RHD passenger side down and bring up the flat side on the RHD driver side, making it closer to the LHD pattern.
>>
>>16483552
How are you going to do that? There isn't enough adjustment in any headlight to make it rotate 45 degrees.

I don't know why anyone would want to trade off night vision and blind other drivers at the same time.

My insurance was able to pay for the damage to my car, and in turn, went after the city.
My layer found an older piece of legislation that stated that street lights need to be a certain distance from the curb. This one was not, and "If it had been installed properly in the right place, the vehicle in question would have sustained far less damage."

Basically my layer helpedmy insurance sue the city for a mistake made years ago that dealt with a light being placed 2 feet closer to the street than where if "should have been". And that saved me from all the fines of trying to do sikk skidz around an intersection.

What do you think of the H6?

I'm thinking of buying a Liberty, and the H6 is a good third cheaper than the turbo in most cases, so it makes it very tempting.
Obviously it's not as powerful as the turbo version (although it's still 100hp more than my current car), but it seems to be more reliable, smooth as fuck, and sounds a lot better (imo).

Depends on years, but the h6 are usually much more reliable (especially early 2000s)

I'm not sure what you mean by 'meme' when you used the 'is this meme a meme' meme, but I can tell you that forged internals are *absolutely necessary* when increasing power on a Subaru to over 300 whorepower *at the wheels.*

Look up materials science and materials engineering stuff - phase diagrams and metallurgy heat treatments and stuff. It can make or brek your engine.

Its a eastern Canada car that never had under coating put on until I got it this year. It has some rust on the quarters and one fender. It also has a huge rust hole in the rear strut tower which is very common on these cars. Besides normal Subaru issues such as head gaskets it is very good. Really the only issue with the car now is the power steering pump is sucking in some air causing it to whine.
>>
>>16488329
They are just the stock steel wheels spray painted white. There were very rusty when I got the car.

Thinking of getting a 2017 or 2018 wrx. Can anyone tell me about the newer models' reliability and quality of the interior? Need a reliable dd that's fun to drive but isn't too bare bones and uncomfortable, and won't die in me and will last 10+ years. I don't plan on trashing it, but will do some responsible hooning.

Idk about reliability, they generally should be reliable as long as you don't hoon all day every day, new interior is leagues better than the older model and the best part is muh resale
>>
>>16492394
I don't plan on beating on it, just enjoying some spirited driving in the twisties down in GA since I'm used to the shit straight flat road in IN and it's way more fun down here. I don't drive hard before it's good and warmed up.

Bumping for info.

Also interested in a new/lightly used newer WRX for a fun daily.

I know there have been lots of complaints about head gasket problems and wondered if Subaru has gotten any better with reliability, and whether the WRX would be worth considering for a reliable dd.

Forester xt
Or legacy wagon (H6)
Both around 2005

Which one handles better?
Which is more reliable?
Which one has a lower/better seating position?

I really like the sound of flat6s but also never had a turbo car before. I also like the look of lowered foresters more then legacy's but that the last consideration on my mind

Mine has the oem wing on the back also.
Love this dam car.
So easy to work on.
Comfy awd.
Got this for a steal of $600 the rear wheel fell of because some idiot over torqued the lugnuts.
And the dealership I bought it from closed down before i could make a payment.
Gonna sell it soon to get an wrx/sti.
Honestly I cant decide weather I want newer one or an older one.

>>
>>16497065
You can definitely break studs from over torquing them with an air ratchet that has 150 psi running through the line.

just general concerns for the older models.
If I buy new you can bet your ass Ill make every problem the dealerships. Because I will get every warranty available,
for the old just need to know what I should look out for in terms of maintenance.
I don't wanna be sitting here getting nickle and dimed. I want to be upgrading things not fixing crap.
>>
>>16497065
they can its jsut really unlikely. I've seen lugs torqued on so hard they cracked the wheel
>>
>>16497087
You didn't say anything about studs breaking you just said they fall off.
I know you can break studs easily. I have replaced hundreds on all new Subaru's because they are literally fucking rusted from the factory it's literally retarded.

Don't buy old just buy new. Less buckshot to deal with. You put a cobb accessport though I'm voiding your warranty.

Any problems that show up are not the dealerships , it's Subaru of America's problem. We give them a call and they tell us what to fix or not. Because they pay us for warranty work.
>>
>>16497189

Why even bother voiding warranty work if SoA is going to pay you for it anyway? Isn't it just free work units for you guys?

I know for a fact that people have had their stock engines grenade, so it's not like Subaru has bullet-proof blocks.
>>
>>16481494
Storytime, anons. Here's why courtesy is important if you're working in sales and why I will never buy a Subaru.

>Be me
>Looking to buy second car
>Call Subaru dealership
>"Hey, I'm in the market for a new car. Could I come and test drive a WRX?"
>"Sure thing, anon. Come on down."
>Show up
>Talk to employee outside about things for ~15 minutes
>Tell him I'm here to test drive a WRX
>"Oh that's cool, someone was just test driving one this morning and I just got mine last year, you'll love it."
>Walk into dealership
>Hi, I'm here for the test drive
>"No we don't allow people to test drive the WRX"
>"Oh ok what about X car?"
>"No you can't test drive that either"
>This asshole is telling me I can't test drive their shitboxes because he thinks I'm poor
>Leave dealership
>Go to BMW
>Test drive a 428i
>They were very kind and extremely helpful throughout the entire process
>I dress very humbly as I don't like to stand out
>Not for a single moment did they treat me like anything less than a wealthy, valued customer despite my appearance
>Buy a 2016 435i xDrive Coupe from them in cash next week

I'm debating whether or not I should go back to the dealership and flex on the wagecuck who wouldn't let me have a test drive. I probably won't but the idea of it is appealing to me.
>>
>>16497211
This is how it works.
>customer comes in because check engine light is on
>warranty 1 hour if labor
>find bullshit codes related Cobb port or other mods (turbo back fuel injectors ) or whatever.
>write down what I find P/A new parts
>tell customer he's buttmad and wants warranty
>call SoA we explain the issue
>they won't cover warranty customer must pay parts and labor if he wants his car fixed.
>explain again to customer who is still buttmad
>give him SoA number
>he calls and gets shut down
>he leaves we never hear from him again

SoA pays us 1 hour of diag time that's it.

But you're right. I have seen motors go into the new ones already.
>>
>>16487955
i did.
>>
>>16497260
Seems more like a shitty dealer than a Subaru thing. They let me test drive my WRX no problems at all. I was a 24 year old dressed in jeans and a hoodie when I came into dealer. Ordered one cause they didn't have the loadout I wanted. Overall was a pleasant experience
>>
>>16497277

I've heard of some dealers working on modded cars like they don't care - is that just some shady shit like they're pulling the wool over SoA's eyes or something?

I mean, I totally get it if some dude is coming in with mods all over the place with exhaust and deletes and so on - but what about if they just did a "stage 1" sort of tune without doing anything else and they reset the ECU/took off the access port while going in? I've heard everything from "No there's absolutely no evidence of modding or accessport use after uninstall" from Cobb to "there's an internal ROM that tracks/counts reflashes so they'll know" from owners.

I'll be honest, I ran a stage 1 tune on my Saab for 3 years and never really ran into any problems and I was thinking of doing the same thing to a current generation WRX - I didn't realize the flat 4's were so damn fragile.
>>
>>16497388
There is a way to check if the ECU has been flashed. They just need a reason to look at it. Some dealers care some don't the one i got mine from doesn't seem to give a shit about all the mods I have on mine. I knew that I could blow my shit up and they might not replace it before I even started to mess with it. As long as you are ok with that going in then try your luck and see what happens when it blows
>>
>>16497388
8 times out if 10 we don't care. Usually if something that needs to replace is extremely difficult and is just a bitch then I will try everything in my power to make sure the customer Knows he fucked up and has to pay for it.

Yes there is a way we can tell if the ECU was flashed. It doesn't take long to figure it out. Plus literally everyone that comes in just leaves the cobb in plugged in or has it wrapped up in their center console. I forgot to add that if you come in for a check engine light scan and your cobb is plugged in we don't touch it. Ita game over already.

What's usually done for a minor service with a 2004 WRX

it's my first car I bought myself, ordered a Haynes book and was planning on working on it myself.

how bad of an idea is this if I have never worked on a car rbefore?

may get the major services done at a dealership though

>>
>>16497567
Seems like a decent ride but him replacing just 2 tires would bug me. You can damage the differentials with mismatched tread wear.
>>16497866
A minor service is just and oil change and tire rotation which may include a cabin filter or fuel injector cleaner.
They are flat 4 engines and are not to same as others. The sparks plugs are on both sides not on top.
>>
guys, I don't know if I'll get hate because I haven't been on /o/ for a while but i want to know

I've really been wanting to pick up a 2.5 RS to make an RSTi, but am having no luck finding one for a good price. Is there a reason why people don't seem to use first generation base imprezas to do an EJ207 swap?
>>
>>16499355
Yeah because the motor inside it stock doesn't need to be swapped. You can boost it on stock internals. Also the suspension it comes with can take a beating. Good luck finding one for under 5K
>>

>>
>>16497866
It isn't too bad unless you're doing any work related to the head and you don't want to jack up/remove the engine. You'll just have more steps to go through to gain access. Good luck if you have big hands.
