It exists because you cant take a WR250F on road for any significant amount of time without needing a full engine overhaul.

A WR250R goes 26,000 miles before even needing to crack the valve cover.

A bike that doesn't have over 10" of travel front and rear, weighs more than 250lbs, and doesn't have knobbies.

>the wr250r also weighs 130kg, that is simply too heavy.
Simply too heavy for what? Racing? It's not a race bike.

Show me a competent on/off road bike that weighs less than 300lbs then. I dare you.

Is this some kind of a joke I'm missing because to me, 9/10 dirt bikes all look exactly the same aside from colors.
>>

They're for people who want a capable on and off road bike that they don't have to tear down every two weekends when they actually ride them. That they can also take out of town for a significant amount of miles then hit some trails without having to truck it around.

They're also for people that want to do adventure riding and actually hit some decent off road trails without haaving to worry about their racebike blowing up.

>can't afford
maintaining a two stroke offroad bike isn't even expensive. it's just annoyingly time consuming if you plan on putting miles on the bike. Some people perfer to ride rather than sit in their garage like a dirty mexican.

Off road in general.
even 5kg of weight makes a big difference toward a bikes performance off road.

People don't buy WRR's for tippy top performance off road retard. They're not race bikes, that's a given.
They buy them because they're capable off road and they can actually be ridden on road for substantial amounts of miles without them falling apart.

MX bikes need an oil change every 10 hours because they all hold less than a litre of oil, a beta480rr has more than double the oil capacity of pretty much any MX bike.

Sorry, every 30 hours. Which is still unacceptable on the road. And the bikes need a complete teardown every 90 hours to inspect cylinder and gearbox. Absolute garbage for the road.
Also, WRR only has 1.4 liters of oil and it only needs an oil change every 3000 miles. You're retarded.

>In any case why don't you just buy a road bike
Because you can't take them off road.

>you want something capable on road and dog shit off road?
I don't. I want something capable on and offroad. Which the WRR is.

Over 10 inches of suspension front and rear, plenty of clearance, knobbies on laced excel wheels, good gear spread, bulletproof motor, 6 speeds, sub 300lbs weight, etc.

Once again, you have no idea what you're talking about. Betas are trash on road putting on miles. WRR's are great on road and capable offroad. one of the best dual sports you can buy for on and offroad travel.

Protip: Check ebay for parts that you need occasionally. Getting parts from yamaha or partzilla is getting to be expensive, IF they have it.

I once won an auction for a front wheel with the break drum assembly for about $50. I only needed the outer drum part, but I've got a spare now.

On the trails, it's not an issue. Better suspension, lighter weight, and equivalent power to weight, the WR takes it easily.

If it's 1500 cheaper that changes things. Out here Grom's tend to be about the same (or more expensive) than Ninja 250s. It might be a better choice for that price, especially if it's only for city streets. If you ever want to take it on the highway or outside the city, I would not recommend it.

Also, I hope you're buying used. Never buy a starter bike new.

Very true. DRZ has ancient 90's tier suspension.

Except it absolutely matters in the handling of the bike retard.

About 10% less power and about 10% less weight. Yes equivalent power to weight.

objectively speaking, for commuting in narrow, tight single lane london roads, would the Grom be better? or does the higher power of the 300 give you an advantage in such a setting?

yeah, definitely buying used. though it'll be 6 months or so till i buy it so I'll let it mull in my head for a while. And maybe I'll find a lower priced Ninja.

I don't know why you insist on spouting lies but I'm home for the night so I have time.
>suspension
Doesn't matter what decade it's from. The DR-Z400 has a really good shock and pretty good forks. They absorb bumps well rather than rebounding them back at the rider really hard like the WR.
>inb4 muh upside down
doesn't make it suspend the bike any better
>weight
maybe you aren't fit for riding a dirt bike. That's okay, you just don't have to try to force your weakness onto other people.
>10% less power.
It's about 23 vs 33 horsepower. The DR-Z has about 44% more power to accompany it's extra 10% weight.

How important is it to use higher octane gas in the WR250R? I'm a cheap retard and having to get different gas for it than normal turns me off a bit.

The 250/300 is a pretty light and small bike, but honestly the main reason to get it is so you can get a starter bike that can also use the highway. If that is something you never need than the grom is fine.

Might be hard to come across a used grom that is priced appropriately.
Just get a Ninja 250 anyway. It's the universal beginners bike and cheap as shit since it's been around so long. The 300 has relatively little advantage and is significantly more expensive.

Second, note that Yamaha WR250R and KTM 690 are conspicuously absent – neither model even cracks the top 10 list.

I constantly hear riders claiming to want a modern thumper from a Japanese manufacturer. The lack of sales for the WR250R proves otherwise. If you took all the riders who claimed to want a modern Japanese dual sport thumper, you would find a subsection that want a modern small bore thumper. Accordingly, those riders would then buy the WR250 as the best and most modern Japanese thumper in the 250cc class. But we can see that is clearly not the case. Even the lowly Yamaha TW200 outsells the WR250R.
>>
>DRZ fags shitting up thread trying to shill their mediocre bike from the 90's
It was barely as good as the WR400 and XR400R it competed against then, it doesn't even compare to a modern bike, why do they even try?

Dude, no bullshit, a job like that typically costs several hundred dollars. It might be worth it if the guy knows what he's doing. Carbs are simple to clean but they're a total bitch to access on most bikes. The whole process takes 3-4 hours if not longer. Not to mention the spark plugs will likely need to be replaced, carbs synced, idle adjusted, etc

It's a simple job and you should do it on your own if you can. Otherwise, expect to pay anywhere from $200-$400

Here in NY, 200-300 on the bike, maybe 300 off the the bike. Carb cleaning isn't a money maker job since it is pure labour and you can't really take any short cuts.

Oh wait you have 4 carbs that are likely all fucked and gummed up and need syncing, try 500 or more.

Don't buy a bike older than say ~5 years if you aren't going to work on it yourself, the difference in price you save will be offset by you paying someone else to fix your shit.

M8 fucking weather services lied. All of them. I woke up at 1400 and it was 26F. It was supposed to be 39F. The temperature dropped as the afternoon wore on. Fucking winter baka. In other news, my NC's clutch pedal squeaks like hell. Kind of funny for the first 5 minutes, and then it becomes annoying. Oh well, I'll try some graphite spray on the hinges and springs next. Any updates on dat 'Maro?

No updates on the Camaro, still being too cheap to buy the front wheels for it, although now I at least have a proper excuse kek. I did some work on the thermostat housing trying to fix some botchery I had on there before and it leaks worse now, so I need to revert it back or find a new housing.

They have a new Fiata at the local dealer, I really want to go try it.

Just disassemble as much of the carb as you like, and boil in water. You don't even have to get the synthetic and rubber parts out, nothing in there that 212F will hurt.

Blow the passages clean with a can of computer duster afterwords.

Honestly it will be a crap shoot. This makes about 14 more HP from the factory, but weighs the same. It will definitely handle worse, but might have the edge in a straight line. It doesn't rev as high though. It's got ohc and 3v or cylinder vs the ohv and 4 valves of the CX. I'm just really happy this has 6 speeds, overdrive and highway bars. It's going to hopefully be a lot comfier

>I don't know why you insist on spouting lies but I'm home for the night so I have time.
Pot meet kettle.

>Doesn't matter what decade it's from.
It's extremely important to the quality of damping and wheel control. Pretending 90's tier suspension is as good as 00's tier suspension shows just how much of a retarded fanboy you are.

>They absorb bumps well rather than rebounding them back at the rider really hard like the WR.
The WRR is sprung stiff like a proper offroad bike. I'm sorry you've never ridden a proper offroad bike (or a WRR) and base the entirety of your judgement off of a meme tier Youtube video from some sperglord with a DRZ fetish.

>doesn't make it suspend the bike any better
Increases the stiffness of the front end which translates to direct feedback and handling. Something the DRZ doesn't have.

>maybe you aren't fit for riding a dirt bike. That's okay, you just don't have to try to force your weakness onto other people.
Now you're a retard trying to argue against physics.

A lower mass bike will change directions more quickly and will be easier to handle no matter how strong you are. WRR's are lighter and this contributes significantly to the substantially better handling over the DRZ.

>It's about 23 vs 33 horsepower. The DR-Z has about 44% more power to accompany it's extra 10% weight.
Complete bullshit. It's hilarious that you ahve to flat out lie to make the shit tier DRZ look better. DRZ's make ~34hp at the crank. WRR's make ~30hp at the crank. Pic related.

Try again retard.

>air cooling requiring loose tolerances. The loose the tolerances the worse the tollerances get over time.
>old shitty metallurgy. Metal parts were made light with poor quality metals. They tend to break over time when encountering decades of repeated stress.
>design was a matter of trial and error and using what worked before. There was no stress analysis of FOS analysis back before decent computers enabled such. Things weren't reinforced exactly where they needed to be to deal with the stress they encountered like they are today. Instead it was based on experience and trial and error. This is compounded by the shit metallurgy.
>Poor quality of manufacture. Welds were done by hand, not robots. This leads to inconsistencies and defects from one peice to the next that can just be programmed out of automated manufacturing used today.

WR just needs a better seat for that.

>swapping dirt wheels on to the WR-X is complicated because it doesn't use the same fork bottoms as the WR-R
I'm pretty sure they're the same. The only difference is the caliper/caliper bracket which is easy to get around.
http://wr250r.com/articles/differences-between-the-wr250r-and-wr250x

But I'm not advocating WRR wheels. I'm saying get a set of Warp 9 or ebay 21/18's and throw them on there. They make them specifically for the WRX and Warp 9 even includes the appropriate brake rotor and caliper bracket.

Best prices I've found are MotoX Industries.

>>16473724
i have a corbin seat on it, still wouldnt wanna ride it long time on the highway if im going to be riding dirt, probably wouldnt be able to find a good compromise on gearing that wouldnt be shitty on at least one of dirt/highway.

Also the fork bottoms and hubs are different. I could get another set of wheels but I think I could make some cash back off selling my WR, plus I could get a bike better suited for the task as well
>>
>>16473658
Go for a 690/701 Enduro, the DR650 is a little too slow and vibrate-y on the highway to be comfortable and too heavy to be fun off road.
>>
>>16473729
KLR and DR aren't even in the same universe of comparison to the XRR. both are underpowered and pigfat by comparison.

If you want a bike that can do a ton of highway miles and be alright on fire roads, get a KLR or DR.

Want a bike that can haul ass pretty much anywhere other really technical singletrack, get a XRR.

Cruisers are notorious for "riding like assholes". When sportbikes filter in straight lines through traffic jams those cruiser riding fuckers actually weave around on interstates because it's the closest they can get to the twisties while

>not scraping their expensive chrome
>actually passing people
>>
>>16473787
yeah i misremembered but the hubs are still different and id have to run a big brake on my dirt setup... which i guess isn't that bad but still not ideal
>>
>>16473805
Hubs being different doesn't matter if you're running a different set of wheels with different hubs. Both hub styles fit on the bike with OEM spacers.

Once you have the wheels you literally only have to worry about the brake. Typically you'll just have a smaller WRR rotor mounted to your dirt wheels and have a smaller WRR brake caliper bracket to relocate the caliper for the rotor.
