Depends on aplication.
I will assume nothing sporty because of the open diff.
For vans and pick-ups or other cars that will have a lot of weight on the rear axle RWD.
For normal cars FWD because of less parasitic loss and more traction.

I have had loads more fun driving a shitbox mid 2000's Corolla around at the limit than I ever did in a Miata. Handbrake tricks and slides are so satisfying in FWD, plus once you learn how to do monster weight transfers you can whip around effortlessly with minimal inputs.

FWD is not a meme, it's a good drivetrain layout that has only gotten better and better.

Not really. It gets old after a while and isn't even close to holding a drift with power going to the rear. The Miata doesn't got enough power to spin the rear tires so it's not going to be that fun.

I will have to go with a FWD with the LSD if the engine does not push above 250 BHP.
On a wet/slippery surface the RWD with an open diff would just spin it's power away on the wheel with no traction.
