>Go to look at used car on craigslist
>Temp tags
>car is dirt cheap
>title: rebuilt
>car is actually salvage title
>tells me it just needs a couple things for it to be rebuilt status and they come with the car
>walk away without even hearing him out on what those things were
Can someone educate a yuropoor on how the titles work in the US?
What makes for a rebuilt title? And a salvage one? What kind of damage/work on the car makes it go into the right category?
Who decides when a car becomes rebuilt or salvaged? What are the authorities involved?
How many titles there are?

Rebuilt: Car was totaled, insurance didn't want to pay to fix it and cut the owner a check approximately that equaling the car's value minus some small fees; owner fixed it out of pocket and insurance deemed it safe/drivable.
Salvage: Car was totaled and not fixed
Usually decided when a shop tells the insurance how much it'll be to fix a car
Usually frame damage would be the biggest reason for "its fukt m8"

Also a word, one of my cars has a rebuilt title because the first shop I took it to WAY overpriced the repair costs, second shop fixed it 100% but insurance refused to acknowledge the second estimate and wrote the car off. Rebuilt won't always mean problems but it'll tank the value of a car and buying them is a gamble
