if someone had a nice car you wanted, would it be possible to get the same make/model/year of that car but broken, then swap the vins on the two cars, and take the good one? asking for a friend thanks xx
Considering that the VIN is replicated in multiple locations on the vehicle, it would be an excessively complicated task and potentially impossible without the victim noticing.
do it when they're sleeping scrub

I think he means to steal the car, swap out the VINs, and then roll the broken car out somewhere for someone else to find on the side of the road.

My friend had an E36 325i that he was always trying to turn into an M3. I told him so many times that we should just steal an M3 and swap out the VINs.
The only one they ever check is on the windshield so I guess try and replace that whole assembly and maybe the driver's door as well. Nobody ever checks the VIN on the engine block or wherever else they put it. And if they did somehow run the VIN on the block, just tell the police that they need to talk to Carlos from Craigslist because he knows more about those parts than you do.

BMW etches VINs into the unibody. Good luck swapping those.
There's also no VIN on engines. Engines have separate serial numbers.
