Mitsubishi has just been on the decline and they had to cut all of thier 'cool' cars to stay alive. Seriously, look at the current line up its just shitty crossovers and mom-mobiles. Kia has a fucking better line up right now.

Considering a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer for an under $5000 car. Opinions?

From what I've heard/read from a lot of enthusiasts the Evo X was the death knell of the Evo line because it was heavier and slightly slower than it's predecessor, and changing the engine from the highly popular 4G63 to the 4B11 really hurt its appeal from an aftermarket upgrade point of view.

Ironically that was also when it stopped being an "evolution" and stayed practically the same for like 8 years

The end of Group A meant they no longer had to build the Evo (from VII onward) with competing in WRC which allowed for its transition to a newer, heavier platform. One could say the Evo went from a road-legal rally car to a car that was still very adept at rallying but a little less brutal.

This was coupled with a decline in interest in both rallying itself and in sports cars. Younger buyers couldn't afford Evos to begin with or manage insurance and maintenance costs, and the X was left to stagnate for almost a decade while everyone else caught up and overtook it.

There was also the Lancer GSR from the mid 90s that served as that midway point between commuter and Evo.

Evo X owner here. Basically, they made a really fucking amazing car a couple decades ago and thought they'd be able to coast it out through a few generations. Then regulations happened. Then people started to reform car culture to include luxury and comfort, which, in true Mitsubishi fashion, was absent while they dumped all their cash into performance.

Pretty much this, though any benchracer could make the case that the IX and the X are equal in performance at their highest trims. That said, when you dump a ton of money into changes and all you get is a net-zero change, you have to wonder if it's worth it to keep going.
