SV was the meme baiku for a bout a week in between the GS500 and whatever enduro bike dirtfags rag on about. Great deal though, much better value buying it used compared to what people ask for in GS500s here.

nah clearly dirtbikes with knobbies on tarmac is the right option, no traction, ultimate dorifto
>>

I thought the upside down photo was a dead giveaway. Anything in decent nick usually asks for 4k dollarydoos. And that's before stamp tax, registration, transfer fees etc.

I saw two cafe racer'd ones for sale for over $8000 each today. crazy shit
>>
>>16434388
In my area the SV only goes for $500-$1k more than the GS500, depending on the year.
>>

how could you have a naked model as your first bike?

They only ever made LAMS legal SV650s in faired form, was it converted later?

Anything that isn't some scrub dirtbike is usually 2-3k+ in Australia, however some of the ultra premium brands like Bimota seem to sell at a better price (comparatively) to the US and Canada and such. Maybe that's because some of those brands don't import to the US and it's individual owners extra import costs, I dunno shit doesn't make sense sometimes tho
>>
>>16434434
I've had my bike license for 7 years, spent nearly 3 years as a postie, this is just the first real bike I've owned since the XR100 I had as a kid.

>>16434440
Yeah the floor price here for SV650s is around 2k for a gen-1 model, while any GS500 in VIC seems to be starting at 4k unless it was trashed.

I started to look to buy just as spring was ending so all the good deals were gone coming into summer.

Yeah, I'm amazed at how much power is available and at the same time horrified there are bikes with close to double the max horsepower. Spent 90% of my riding today barely engaging the throttle. Hopped on the freeway for a short stint and the acceleration felt like it can only be measured in warp factors.

>>16434479
the SV is actually a little more savage in it's power delivery than a lot of bikes with more power than it, all 600s for example have a very tame throttle response compared to them even though they will put out 35+ more HP than them at the top end of their rev range.

Believe it or not I was talking to somebody the other day who had swapped his SV for an I4 1000 and missed the immediate sort of roll on throttle response you get on the SVs.

The gearing in particular just feels basically perfect for punting through a twisty road as well, I do get why some people just own them for life (I'm ready to move on though).
>>
>>16434453

oh come on people, why does /dbt/ need to praise their beginnerbikes like this everytime, no matter what fucking bike.

SV650 is good but it's nothing compared to twitchy throttles if you're in the high revs of a 600

>I can only assume he never rode a 600 himself

yeah nah, I've ridden several 600s, 750s and 1000s, I do not ever post about things I have not personally experienced, ever.

A 600 only makes more power than an SV above around 8,500 RPM and the from zero throttle response of an SV is actually quite extreme, far less smooth than most 600s, you can bring an SV to balance point with a power wheelie starting at 3,500 RPM, they really do have a strong throttle response from down low.

I said at the top end of the rev range because that's where 600s make more power than SVs, at the top end, they don't at the low end, not that SVs are more savage in power than a 600 top vs top, how is that possible, they make 30 hp less up there, I even state that in my post.

I spent the entire rest of the post talking about immediate roll on power and what not so I figured this was obvious, please don't assume I'm retarded because you tried as hard as possible to misinterpret me.

>>16435711
I just did the same road over and over again, it's about 30 km of godlike twisties, I would go up and do laps of the whole thing until I ran out of fuel then leave, eventually you just hit it faster and faster and bang soon you're getting your knee down.

I'd recommend you do the same thing I always recommend people do which is go slow enough that you can brake for the corners just by rolling off the throttle and get your lines and body position perfect, get yourself completely comfortable with the "course" so you know exactly what corner is next and where your line needs to go, body position isn't just about how much you lean off, but when, where and how smoothly you move your body on the bike, too often people try and learn this while going fast and they just tie their brain up into knots, do it slow, you might look retarded moving all about on the bike while barely leaning but when you decide to go fast it'll all be instinctual. (cont)
>>
>>16436053
>how is that possible, they make 30 hp less up there,
HP isn't the only thing that affects twitchiness/harshness/response or whatever you want to call it. My 45hp 450cc dirt bike is far more harsh in terms of throttle response than my 100hp 600cc i4 sport bike

I feel like this goes without saying but if you really want to lean harder than you ever have before there's always a track day too, they're not just for fast people the slow group will often have a lot of people not that hot on cornering who came to learn. My only regret is I didn't do them sooner.

Anyway here's some resources I used to help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pagriJOuH0g Start here for basics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL54cMxILRU here is something I used that helped me out immensely with body positioning.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzY3VEy-TGy3M1ExOE5XLTZVMmM here's something neat for when you're starting to see a bunch of holes in TOTW and want to learn something else.

Also watch a lot of motorcycle racing, whichever type you prefer, WSBK, ASBK, BSB, motoGP, Motoamerica etc. Doesn't really matter which one but try and study what the riders do in detail.

yes because of the location of the power in the rev range, reciprocating mass, throttle pull, weight of the bike and gearing, I've ridden 450s, I know all about that laser like immediate connection between the throttle pull and the power hitting the rear wheel, faster and more intense than the connection of any 1000 I've ridden.

I'm trying to keep power delivery and immediate throttle response and all these other terms separate but apparently I'm just making it more complex in the process so I'll break in down.

>SV has a more extreme power delivery down low, 600s have a more extreme power delivery up high in terms of actual force.

>SVs have a twitcher throttle off the stop than almost any 600 I've ridden and a more immediate and less tame roll on due to it.

I suspect corrosion on the horn connector which is common. Clean the contacts and ensure they are snug.

I prefer incandescent (cheap is fine) bulb test lights to meters for checking things like a horn because a bulb is a load, but since your horn works if connectors are wiggled the horn itself isn't likely to be the problem.

Anyone got any advice for what sort of a bike to get to do long distance trips on? I want to hit the road and at this point I'm considering either an ebike which is much slower and has a much smaller range but is much better for your cardio, or a motorcycle which seems like it could be much more fun and freeing which is the end goal.

I'm going to have to carry a tent and some food and some clothing and basic necessities but I might be able to put it all in a backpack. Not sure how the logistics of any of this would work so any advice would be appreciated.

I reuse the clip if it is flat and undamaged. I've not seen the clips for sale separately.
>>
>>16435567
>i have to remove the chain a lot.

Then I suggest contacting the chain manufacturer and asking. You might get some free links.

Why you remove chain a lot? That's a very, very rare use case.
>>
>>16435625
Of course. Now buy a case of them.
>>
>>16436681
thanks anyway

>>16436692
i have two sets of wheels and with a large difference in sprockets that requires two chains. single use rivets are super annoying and the clips work fine
>>
>>16436706
You could consider getting a front/rear sprocket combination for similar gearing difference rather than rear only. For example I can swap between 16/41 and 13/44 gearing with the same chain and have a huge gearing difference.
>>
>>16435749
Use a flap disc on an angle grinder. Jack the bike so the wheel is off the ground and put it in first after tying the front brake lever back to apply brakes. Be careful.

I neatly shaved a few mm of rubber off the side of a tire previous owner installed that contacted the belt on my FXR, (It wasn't structural.) Looked like it was made that way but got the shine off.

Alternate option. Buy or make a wheel truing stand and process both tires so your wear marks make it to the sidewall, then let bystanders figure out how you leaned to 90 degrees!
>>
>>16436730
not going to consider that at the moment since i have 2 brand new chains and 4 brand new sprockets.
but i get what youre saying. with the axle adjustment one chain could do both.
>>
>>16436236
Shouldn't be a money pit. Those are easy to work on. In future post specific year with tech questions.

Transfer the title NOW. Failure to do so is a common fuckup. Get a factory service manual or a Haynes/Clymer/Chilton.

Perform a cold compression test on both cylinders. Inspect spark plugs while you are at it. Remember choke off and throttle full open when compression testing.

You can use a car battery to test electricals. NEVER jump off a running car or babby Kawasaki regulator will die trying to regulate manly auto alternator.
>>
>>16436706
In that case multiple master links (don't buy at the dealer, get online for less) and inspecting the clips at each use is likely best solution.

I'd get a pair of master link clip pliers for more comfort and lower odds of clip damage. Not mandatory but convenient.
>>
>>16435348

Sounds like the cable itself is at fault. Check resistance of the cable while jiggling it around and if it changes then it's definitely the cable.
>>
>>16436778
i broke one and im on my last clip. i can buy the master link again but like i said its $5 bucks each. i got the tusk tool ordered so it wont happen again, but i still would like a backup or 2

I've used them all including the old, very nice strong methylene chloride commercial dips. I wish I'd known how well Pine-Sol works thirty years ago.

Pine-Sol works as well or better and doesn't fuck up Viton float needles or other plastic parts. It's a lot more convenient to use, it's not nearly as expensive, and you can wash it down your kitchen sink. I plunge parts into a pot of hot water after their Pine-Sol bath, then blow out with cheap Walmart carb cleaner (good stuff) or compressed air to dry.
>>
>>
>>16436920
Ultimate varnish destroyer is methylene chloride (uncommon now except in paint stripper because toxic) but I'd call undiluted Pine-Sol second and better because you can dip plastic parts in Pine-Sol.

You can dip a complete rack of carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol for cheap which is nice too.

Cheap Harbor Freight vibratory (not really ultrasonic because frequency isn't ultrasonic) cleaners work with anydip and speed things up.

yes they're good in wet, great in dry, unbelievable turn in feel and lightness of the profile.

according to bridgestone the S21Rs last 36% longer, you'll probably save money by going to them.

>I don't think I'm a good enough rider yet to tell the difference between them.

for most people, sport touring tyres are all they need so I wouldn't worry about that too much either, you can go perfectly fast, scrape knee etc. on sport touring tyres for the most part, if you want sport tyres because you want to feel absolutely glued to the road then go right ahead though, they do feel better.

I'm running Avon Trailriders and they're pretty decent. Not amazing grip offroad but better than semislick sportbike tires. And they handle well onroad as well.

not everyone wants amazing dirt knobbies at the expense of on road performance or amazing on road performance that is useless off pavement. Some sort of compromise is appropriate depending on the intended usage of the bike.

The trailriders are almost the same as Distanzias just more on road focused.

You don't need super sticky tires for a low power dualsport/supermoto. These tires will grip well enough for whatever you plan on doing on a DRZ on road while still not being terrible offroad. And an added perk is they're supposed to last a good amount of miles.

I'd give it almost a 100% chance the Q3s won't fit your dr-z, the actual real width of a Q3 in a "160" size is 169.3 mm, almost the size of a 600s tyre, it'll probably hit the chain or something.

>They make S20 Evos in the smaller sizes (140 and 150), I'd go for them.

S20 Evo has been replaced with the S21 and is a much better tire. Unfortunately they don't make them in the 140 or 150 sizes. You can still find S20 Evos though.

But really putting that sticky of a sportbike tire on a SM'd dual sport is a complete waste of money unless you are planning on doing quite a bit of mawdz and takling the bike to the track, Even then you can get buy with a lower performance tire and see no ill effects in handling. And have the added benefit of a tire that doesn't turn square in a couple thousand miles.

The BT-023's a very good sticky sport touring tires if you're looking for an exclusively on road tire. Hell this would be excellent on most 600's and the level typical riders push them to and stick in the twisties just fine. having the stickiest sportbike rubber sounds nice and all but doesn't make sense unless you actually ride hard enough to push them into their additional performance envelope and actually have a bike capable of pushing them that far.

As long as I can afford to I'm gonna run actual sport tyres, I don't think there's anything wrong with going overkill for tyres unless you're buying supercorsas to potter around to cafes and what not but that's a whole different kettle of fish, if they feel better and you like them more, go ahead, I'd rather be overtyred than undertyred.

When you start riding is irrelevant. You could start riding and walking at the same time and still barely end up above average. Innate talent does exist and you can't get it just by practicing your ass off.

How many hundreds of kids participated in little racing events and went to prestigious racing schools and never even qualified for moto3? A fucking lot, that's what.

And for every 10 of those failures there was some guy who started riding at amateur track days in his teens/twenties who got a little further.

The best have the most talent and the most practice. You have to have both to be number one. But if you just have talent, you don't need as much practice as other people.

In all honesty, if you ever stop and think "i'm shit because i started too late", there's a very good chance you wouldn't be doing much better with 9001 hours of prepubescent pocketsport riding.

It's a maxi-scooter. They're for people who like to imagine they're more pragmatic than motorcyclists but actually aren't and people that just can't ride motorcycles.

if you want functional you buy a sportbike, dirtbike, touring bike, or some compromise between those. Scooters are by and large just dumbed down rather than specialized.

If you can downshift into neutral your gearbox might be a tad fucked
>>
>>16438744
Putting the double clutch memery asside

Are bikes not meant to be able to drop down to neutral from 2nd? A gentle half click will do it either way for me
>>
>>16438751
depends on the bike.
>>
>>16438751
Not usually.

I had a TW200 that would only go to neutral shifting down for some reason (made sense). Kawasakis shouldn't ever do it, or shift past neutral when stopped.
>>
>1-N-2-X
>not N-1-2-X with a neutral lockout mechanism
>GP shift is almost never a factory option

fucking why.
>>
>>16438769
>neutral lockout mechanism
explain
>gp shift
gp shift is easy to add to your bike. but why would you? literally the only reason they use it is to gain more lean angle on left turn exits because you dont need your foot under the shifter to upshift. some riders said they never use it because it's only useful for a few corners the whole season.
>>
>>16438786
>explain
neutral can't be accessed when not stopped or a manual lever(+cable) to allow neutral to be selected
>why
it's comfy.
>>
>>16438801
is that really a problem for you? i never really hit N on accident. going from 2 to N can be tougher than 1 to N though
>>
>>16438805
it depends on the gearbox. some are very, very finicky going into neutral unless you have weak japanese ankles. others have neutral as 1.5th gear and can accidentally click into it if you're going slow enough.

i've seen guys who have been riding the same motorcycle every day for five years fiddle around with shift levers so maybe the 1-N-2 pattern might have been a stupid idea from the days when even kawaasaki PNFs were beyond anyone's wildest imagination
>>
>>16438385

vice versa there is no MotoGP rider that started riding after 8 years old. And you can't compare your fun track days to the 250hp precision machinery they ride in MotoGP.

And I'd argue that Moto3 only gets the best of the best of the best. Doesn't mean all the guys sorted out are shit, just for the qualiyfing you need a huge background in racing already.

Pod filters are usually NOT a performance upgrade and they frequently make the bike run much worse. They make removing and installing carbs more convenient and are a cheap substitute for a fucked airbox.

Stacks a shit. No filtration except sometimes rather restrictive screens, and if your engine backfires out a stack when starting it can catch fire making you sad.

Stock jetting in US was lean on streetbikes for EPA reasons. Tuning can cure that making for much cooler running and more midrange power.

Braided lines are an excellent upgrade which reduce wasted lever motion because the braid restrains the Teflon liner so it expands less under pressure.

YEAR, MAKE, MODEL in all your tech questions after you choose a bike because "a motorcycle" means nothing. "chopping apart his bike" also means nothing. Find information task by task. Brand and model specific forums are useful, and so is a lot of content on chopper forums even if you aren't building a chopper.

After you get your machine, make the first purchase a factory service manual. Clymer/Haynes/Chilton are inferior but if that's all you can find then buy one.

You mean shifting dogs. Motorcycle constant mesh transmissions don't use syncro rings. The dog arrangement is simple and strong.

I was the best rider among my friends. I was pretty good when I first started competing. Although more cautious and slower to pick-up as a result than maybe half, I still managed to be faster than most after a year and a half.
I started to get into srs bsns territory (as much as a 12 year old can) and was shit compared to 1/4 of the kids around me, and most of those kids around me were a couple years younger. It was still worth the while to race.
