I'd hardly call my 1000 big and heavy and it's not really like a 600 as far as power delivery goes. I have way more power everywhere and can pull pretty hard from low in the rev range. It doesn't have that big turbo sort of feeling like an 600.

That being said, if you buy a 1000cc sportsbike as your first bike you deserve to die. These things punish mistakes and as a beginner you will make mistakes.

Also I fucking did it again, motherfucking disk lock.

I bent the gear lever and broke the tip of the clutch this time, no other damage, not even a scratch. Gonna post pics later.

Ironically I have the reminder cable but when I tried to use it the first time I couldn't figure out where the fuck to attach it on the lock. Anyone?

Lol I don't even have a single normal lever on the bike now, they're all bent or broken. Still rides fine, at least apparently.

I'm so fucking disappointed. Went to test ride an 'excellent condition' bandit, it was a piece of shit.
>windscreen faded to yellow
>chain rusted and tacky to the touch
>motor warmed up before I arrived
>tyres almost down to the wear markers
>chrome bars rusted to shit
>engine covers all pitted and corroded
>zip ties holding things together
I took it for a test ride because I'd come ~40 minutes to look at it so why fucking not
>bars and pegs vibrate a lot
>bottom end torque only meh tier
>handling gets real floaty past about 6/10ths

Did I just get a bad example or are bandits as half baked as I just experienced?

While I've never ridden a Bandit, they're budget bikes and you can't really expect a "woah" effect out of those types of bikes.

Things faded to yellow, some zipties / patched plastics and rust can be expected on an old bike, but almost all of the things you mentioned are maintenance related.

I bet if
>tyres were new
>chain was well maintened
>steering bearings were in good condition
>owner was not a complete retard and was actually honest about his bike

Your experience would have been more positive. That said, Bandits are not bad bikes per se.

Literally park your bike under a carport and half of those problems wouldn't happen. Replace consumables every 10k (how long does it take to rack up 10k on a bike?) and the rest of those issues wouldn't happen. Christ on a crutch.

Maybe because I'd just got off my TL, the torque wasn't mind blowing like reviews had me believe. But the TL is tuned for top end and has a smaller motor, so who fucking knows?

Can anyone suggest how hard it would be to put USD forks on a CB1100. I suppose you would need new clamps? the tripple clamp and the top one? and then new clocks?
I suppose either custom clamps to suit clocks and new larger diameter forks or a donor bike front end, not sure how a donor bike would work with the old dials but.
>>
>>16428365
I'd buy this bike tomorrow if it had USD forks, that would be gorgeous. Don't even care that it's (relatively) slow and impractical.

enjoy going down the rabbit hole of upgrades anon. Why not just enjoy the bike for what it is, keep something else for the hand-of-god handling experience? Otherwise ownership experience goes something like:
>buy retro bike
>spend $$$ buying full exhaust
>realise that carbs are leaned out
>buy jet kit to remedy
>spend $$$ buying USD forks
>spend more $$$ buying matching brake and mounting hardware
>realise stock shocks are overwhelmed
>replace with monoshock from R6 or similar
>frame still wiggles so better gusset that too
etc
Then you realise you're 2-3x the purchase price of the bike into it, still slower than a standard sportbike, and nobody wants to buy your frankenstein shitbike

1: can I just go for the cheapo 20-200Nm torque wrench and just do the sub-20 nuts by hand?

theyre not bad bikes but are kind of half baked. its a 1200cc engine slapped into some frame. if you dont cover and baby them, you'll quickly lose grips with your maintenance. here's the vid that sold me on mine, but i bought it for $2k usd, salvage, and needed work.

this is a bandit after i took a nap and it rained. very obvious this happened to the PO cos the 1 & 4 spark plugs are slightly rusted.

who cares? a 4x4 gets you forward 100 times better than a dirtbike. And why street legal? Get a proper bike instead of your half-assed "dualsport"

Have you tried accelerating quickly (lol) on an ATV?
Wont happen.

>>
>>16428955

150kmh is plenty enough for a motorcycle unless you plan to race. Not saying you can't use the power of a big bike but you really never need top speeds.

85 is a good and bad year.
More HP but more year specific parts that are more expensive and harder to find.

Sold it for $800 to be rid of the damn thing.
That being said, my buddy has an 85 and loves it. Although he bought a second one for parts only.

Lights didnt work. Had to buy all new switches. Ended up rewiring most of it because the old honda wires like to break inside and look ok on the outside near the head of the frame.
The hard coolant hoses were leaking between cyl and around the front cyl. They are EXTREMELY easy to puncture when removing and very expensive to replace. The Orings arent cheap either. Removal of the pipes required a slide hammer as well.
I can keep going. The whole thing was a nightmare.
Not saying youll have the same experience.
Just be aware

Someone convince me to pull the trigger on an Agusta Brutale 800 RR

Took it for a test ride, and it's probably the most exciting thing I've ever ridden outside of track, except i'm quite far forward in the seat but it's comfy all the same. Not sure how I feel about being almost over the handle bars..

Anyone got any longish term experience on one, or knows a bit in general about them?

I've wanted an MV for a while and I think that the normal brutale is much better, simply because you'd have more room on the seat. The dragster looks so uncomfortable to me, i would never be able to daily it.

Also, take into account MVs recent financial troubles. They are on very thin ice atm.

Yellow or Black and Red or go home. The 2017 yellow is out of control sexy, possibly the best looking naked I've ever seen. Looked good under lights at EICMA too, dunno about engine bits tho
However
Agustas in all sort of trouble with its creditors, and AMG is looking to offload so i'd be pretty wary of buying a super premium brand that isn't going to be supported by manufacturer genuine parts, unless you know a super trust worth mechanic, or your country has access to rekted agusta parts (basically that's no where but Italy). Wait until their finances are stable
>>
>>16429333
I wasn't uncomfortable at all desu, the only thing about the small seat is that you've got to be careful of your junk when you hit really uneven surfaces (which in Australia is almost non-existent), and the sit forces you to sit quite upright. I'm 6'1 and about 80kg and it's just right, you wouldn't want to be any bigger though, saw a dude at 6'4 riding the F4 and that looked fucking bizzaro, so on the Brutale would look down right ridiculous
>>
>>16429341
They just recently got some money thrown at them by some Russian group so they are finally out of debt. AMG is still holding a stake in the company, and maybe they still will due to the new influx of funds they got.

>>16429374
If it fits you good then get it m8, the other anon is right, the black and yellow is absolutely beautiful. But maybe give it half a year before you purchase to make sure they're really on the up and up. I'm waiting until I'm out of school and have a good job before I purchase. I'm hoping they'll be good to go by that point. They're the best italian motorcycles out there.

I learned before courses were widely availalbe and rode my first bike home on my learners permit, but was careful and studied riding more than most people (no major crashes ever, started riding in 1978). I don't suggest that to others.

My bro did the same thing and it worked out until he failed to corner properly and was paralyzed from the waist down.

I later taught MSF courses for the Air Force and it's disturbing how bad even experienced untaught riders were no matter what they rode. Riding well is only intuitive for a small percentage of people.

The prior dirt bikers were consistently the best riders for whatever that's worth.

grind gears and get into neutral, learning to clutch-less down/upshift is actually a handy skill

Absolutely nothing, haven't touched her in weeks, just didn't have the time.
>>
>>16430581
But how the fuck do you downshift without the clutch? I know you can upshift by revving enough and close the throttle.
So you do it by just being in the correct revs range?

bikes have sequential gear boxes so clutches arent entirely necessary. Yes using the clutch will cut down on wear, and yes avoid shifting without the clutch, but when worse comes to worst clutch less shifting isnt going to immediately grenade your transmission.

me! trying not to fall off is the funnest bit.

If you don't feel riding 100%, if you don't feel like you HAVE to ride or you're gonna go crazy then don't bother, motorcycling is dangerous, there should be zero doubt in your mind, bikes can smell fear.

>>16430606
>preload shift lever
>blip throttle

Done, can be surprisingly smooth but only really works at low speeds / low braking intensities, don't try that shit going fast.

if we're talking high speed riding and not crawling through traffic, which I feel the point of the clutch should be obvious (really?) then the answer is downshifts.

I don't upshift with the clutch at all on track but I downshift and slip with the clutch, there are huge differences in backtorque between the gears when downshifting which puts different levels of engine braking onto the rear tyre, as you're braking HARD on the track there is very little weight on the rear tyre so it breaks traction easily BACKWARDS. You slip the clutch on downshifts (instead of just banging it out) to smooth out this increase in backtorque until the revs drop to keep the rear wheel in line or avoid chatter (that's the worst one), there are clutches designed to do this "slipping" under backtorque automatically for you known as slipper clutches.

If you're amazing, you can dump the clutch to make the rear end get out of line on purpose while downshifting, personally though, I shit myself when the bike is entering the corner sliding so I try and avoid it for the most part.

Potentially lethal. Modern 600's are tame in comparison.
>>
>>16430919
won't be that bad just not ideal, sportsbikes are good dailies because you're usually not riding them long enough for the comfort thing to matter whatsoever and they're nice and narrow (thanks to clip ons) for filtering and such.

If you have lots of highway cruising, leave stock gearing, if you don't, go -1/+2 (trust me, this transforms 600s)

why is that? I've heard it many times, before with older sport bikes. Is it related to them being carbed, or the chassis, suspension, or just overall less refined?

57. Dedicated bikers never stop riding until they close the casket. My mentor retired from the Air Force in 1974 and still runs his shop though he's pushing eighty. I met him in 1985 and we've wrenched together since. Both of us trained many Air Force aircraft and civilian vehicle mechanics. Shit's fucking fun so why ever stop? One of our even older bros (80-something retired CMSgt/retired Pratt and Whitney jet tech rep) still rides and restores BSA Gold Star singles.

Mechanics like passing the proverbial torch, so we do and there are lots of us oldfags on various motorcycle forums.
