I'd love to have one of those, would have to be a quad headlight model though.

My next car is going to be '57-'59 Mopar of some sort if I can find one cheap enough. I missed out on a pretty clean '59 Desoto 2 door hardtop a few years back.

If not, maybe a '70-71 Plymouth Fury GT or 427 Impala

Yeah but an LTD isn't really a muscle car. It's cool and I like it, but not muscle really and yes I know it's probably a 429, but those 4 on the floor shots were from a Mustang,
I said the Fury GT earlier because it got the stripes and badges which are muscle car features, I shouldn't have said Impala because IMO again it doesn't really count,

Why don't you take the rear end from the explorer too? Don't all of them have 3.73 Traction-lok?

3rd gen Nova

There's just something about them, personified they would be a heavy set 50 year old biker who could destroy your face with his meaty fists if you say "fuck Trump." They're just fucking gritty and sketchy looking. The small rectangular tail lights, the 'leaning over you' looking front end, just built super bare bones so they could literally live forever in a nuclear holocaust'd world

Nova's come patina'd and have a lead pipe under the seat for bashing skulls from the factory

this is true, and you've been able to see it on craigslist. Thankfully we live in america which has tons of backroads with tons of people who hoard cars where you can still pick up a deal, if you are willing to take the footwork.
>>
>>16425238
Yeah, like my new toy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e2tSDiHFew
>>
>>16425298
I am amazed that thing works as well as it does. what engine do you have in there?
>>
>>16425238
I live in the middle of nowhere in Sweden, only cheap cars you can get here are boring Volvos, Saabs, old boxes, etc.
Something like a base Challenger in decent condition easily fetches for 30-40.000 $.
A 1965-1967 base Mustang in decent condition fetches like 15-30.000 $ ('68-'70 is usually more expensive).
But you can get 70's and 80's yachts for a decent price, seen some Cadillacs rolling around for like 5000-10.000 $, and 80's and 90's crap (Camaro, Firebird, etc) is dirt cheap.
>>
>>16425334
The 400; the only one you could get in '79. I'd have preferred the 460, but it runs like a fine watch, has so many extras, and will look great after I get it cleaned up.
>>
>>16425344
how hard is it to import? you can get some decent sedans here with good engines for dirt cheap.

http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5942914002.html
>>
>>16425352
400 isn't a bad motor. what are your plans for it? it's in much better condition than what I was expecting you to get. Good job sir.
>>
>>16425361
Since it's not really a performance car, I'll probably remove the emissions crap, put on a dual exhaust, and add the few options it doesn't have.

Overall, I'm going to set it up to be a more fuel-efficient daily driver.
>>
>>16425298
That engine sounds like shit. Did you take the air injection hoses off and leave the check valves open to the air?
Or is that the A/C compressor?

Anyways, that looks pigfat and comfy as fuck.

nice. Are you going to restore the interior and exterior at all? I didn't figure you were going to do any performance stuff to it though
>>
>>16425397
That's the A/C compressor; it actually blows cold, despite being a bit noisy.

It most certainly IS pigfat; it's the last of the full-size cars. It's a lot comfier than my Imperial, but handles worse and is slower. It's remarkably better than the Cadillac of the year.

>>16425398
It'll get a full restoration after I'm done with the Imperial; for now, I'll be setting it up as a daily driver and doing some light touch-up work. I'll take pictures of it in the daylight tomorrow after I wash it and clean it up.
>>
>>16425434

Oh. OH. It uses a 2-cylinder Tecumseh style compressor, doesn't it?

lol it sounds normal then.

Annoyingly, the power seat went forward and won't go back, the left directional dash light doesn't work, neither do the power locks. The radio/CB antenna is broken, and I'm not sure about the automatic lights.

Someone also installed a pushbutton starter switch...

On the up side, the clock DOES work.

Still, after I get the seat to a position that's comfortable for someone who is taller than 4' 2" and replace all the vacuum lines, it'll be a good driver.

The looks (I like how old cars look wider because of more ground cearance and less vertical width that modern cars have for safety, just compare a modern Challenger or Mustang to a old one).
The sounds (Old engines tend to be louder and sound better imo).
The feel and culture of the car, modern cars aren't as legendary and usually less fans.
What modern car can match old muscle, American yachts, old European sports cars, etc?
Even old shitboxes are cooler than modern ones.
Also I fucking love huge 5-6 meter (or more) cars

There are a lot of things; for example, nothing can compare to an American luxury barge. The size is so insane; my new Lincoln coupe is 19'2" long; about 2" longer than my '66 Imperial sedan. A 1999 Honda Civic sedan is 13'8" long. There's something magnificent about having an extra half a car in length over modern vehicles.

Though, the best reason is the feel from the driver's seat. I love looking down the deck of an aircraft carrier. The feel of the thin wheel in my hands as I effortlessly glide the car over the road is truly lost on modern vehicles. The self-leveling suspension was keeping the car straight on the ride back, causing the tow truck driver to have the worst conditions of sway and tracking that he's had in years. It's something that you just have to FEEL to understand.

Fuel economy is, without a doubt, their weakness. Even so, it's no worse than most trucks and SUVs. The big difference therein being that I can fix almost everything for pennies on the dollar. Parts are cheap and easy to replace; it's always satisfying to fix an issue yourself and it's becoming a lost art.

There's also a classic for literally everyone for half the price of a new car.

Though, the Packard slogan is the best way to describe why we like them; since it's different for every person, "Ask the man that owns one."

Smell, feel, noise, vibrations, sledgehammer like shifts, bench seats, carburetors, looks, lack of regulations, and just they pain drive different.

Driving my truck is downright scary if you have only ever driven modern cars. It's slow, loud, doesn't stop well, didn't turn well and you'll slide around in the bench seat because there's no seatbelts and a vinyl seat. All of these are major flaws, but they give the vehicle character and the "it" factor that makes it fun to drive. That, on top of being stupid easy to modify and maintain makes ownership fun and exciting. Plus, for me, I drive a big ass red truck that no one else on the road has. I'm more than just another swinging dick in a 3k Honda Civic, I've got something that other people want, or at least that I think they want. No one looks at my Acura at a stoplight, but you always get stares in the Ford.

When I say dark green, I meen dark. The hue I really like is the British racing green from the brg Miata. Pic related.

You have to have autism to intentionally buy an inferior product for subjective, aesthetic reasons. Just accept it, Anon.
>>
>>16433104
And how is it life-consuming? At any moment I could sell every one of my cars, buy a new vehicle, and never pay another thought to what I drive. Instead, I have fun doing what I like.

Fantasy football is an autistic obsession; as it gets you to focus on arbitrary stats and watch every game for simulated teams; by comparison, we're nowhere near that level.

Nobody in these threads compares lap times, 0 to 60 times, or argues like the autistic bench racers in the other threads. We find cars that suit our tastes and refine them; like buying a suit and having it tailored for the perfect fit.

There's also a sense of camaraderie here, despite the difference in choices; nobody criticizes you for having a 6-cylinder, or calls your favorite car shit. Go find ONE other thread on here that does the same that isn't a circle-jerk.
>>
>>16433174
>, or argues like the autistic bench racers in the other threads
I automatically get triggered by powerglide vs turbohydramatic. But numbers aren't everything here. Experience is.

Unless you mean my time slip at the drags...
>>
>>16433172
I like turning wrenches. It's easier on classics.

1/10 for getting me to reply.
>>
>>16433181
So you buy inferior cars and post on here solely because you like wrenching on classic cars, and you're claiming you're not autistic? Really? You're probably more autistic than most in here.
>>
>>16433178
I've daily driven cars with both; Powerglide is OK, but inferior to TH for daily use. It's a lot of fun for a weekend cruiser and the process of it shifting gears is awesome.
>>
>>16433178
Hydra-Matic is obviously superior. I mean, they put it in the car in Greased Lightning. It's even in the song.
>>
>>16433193
In what meaningful way are they inferior? I get what I want out of a car.
>>
>>16433201
The Hydra-Matic and Turbo-Hydramatic are radically different
>>
>>16433212
Safety, performance, accessories, longevity, gas mileage, pretty much every category. I love classic cars, and it's no sweat off my back admitting they're inferior to modern cars in most ways, really how could they not be? And my point about wrenching still stands, if you like wrenching so much you buy a car for it, you got a bit of the 'tisms.
>>
I'd argue that the Mopar 727 is the greatest automatic transmission of the classic era.
>>
>>16433178
2-speed automatics are SHIIIIIIIIIIIIT.

Rubber? Some silicone grease will help you install them and improve their lifespan.

>>
>>16433259
Well, if nothing else, your stubbornness, refusal to accept reality, and point-to-point reply irrefutably proves you're on the spectrum.

Safety is relevant at every speed, you can survive going ridiculous speeds in some cars these days with the multi-layered protection they provide. Performance means more than horsepower, you dingdong, but even in that category engines continue to get bigger and better. Tires wider and thinner, suspension, sway bars every single thing has been improved over the years. Name me one 70s luxury car that came stock with a bluray player, dingus. Cars do last longer these days, the anti-corrosive sprays have gotten much better since the 60s and 70s. You're just reaching on the gas one not even going to bother arguing that a sports car of today gets more than the 8mpg land yacht muscle cars of yesteryear. Not to mention emissions bullshit.

Again, I absolutely love my cars, but you're blind if you genuinely think a car from the 50s, 60s, or 70s is equal to a modern day car in objective testing.

It's not autism. It's masculinity. It's what men do.

Men drink whiskey, smoke cigars, have a job, shoot, and work on cars.

While I'm certainly not saying that everyone here does it to prove their masculinity, it's certainly a part of everyone here.

It's an appreciation for working in life. Working on cars, putting time and money into 'em, and getting something beautiful out of it. Especially today, when most people would rather have their cars drive themselves, and view them as disposable products.

In that way... It's masculine. Traditional. Down-to-earth.

At least, I think so. And that's why I think so many chicks dig a guy that's into classics.

Doesn't matter when you car kills itself after 10 years because electronics are shit and were designed to be shit as well as completely necessary for the whole thing to run in the first place so you need to come back for a new one and keep the market alive and well.
>>
>>16433305
>you replied = autism confirmed
Not an argument. Autistic people are usually correct, anyway.

Blu-ray = nigger tech. When the rest of the electronics fail, modern cars will be scrapped. No vehicle made today will be operable in 20 years without nigger-rigging computers to keep them running.

Not every car got 8 MPG. A 1960 Studebaker averages 17:
http://www.fuelly.com/car/studebaker/lark/1960

A 1964 Falcon got a combined 18 MPG.
http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/ford_usa/falcon_usa_2gen/falcon_usa_2gen_base_2-door_sedan/1964.html

The Ford Taurus averages 23 MPG
http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/taurus

5 MPG difference in comparable commuter cars is pretty close.

I like classics as much as the next guy but that's what they said about supras, skylines, vr4s (semi true) and other Japanese cars. They'll work as well as they're maintained.

It's not that you replied, it's the way you replied.

>>16433984
Both of you can fuck right off with your boomer logic, planned obsolescence has been a key component of US manufacturing since the late 1940s. We discuss 50s/60s/70s almost exclusively in this general, so none are exempt. Also plenty of 80s car trims like the Camaro Belinetta were loaded with shit electronics that controlled everything, and they still function fine.
>>
>>16434103
Yeah bud but that Taurus gets better mileage while being better in every single objective way than the Falcon. The Taurus is faster, has better brakes, better handling, is safer, and has more and way better accesories

My point is, not all cars get saved, but the idea that a modern car will just up and die is not true. If you just maintain or store it like any other car, it'll be fine.

>>
>>16434103
I disagree with the assessment that no cars will be around; Mustangs and Corvettes will ALWAYS have aftermarket parts, as an example.

Some things, however, will be impossible to maintain and require adapting; like the 1981 through 1984 Imperial fuel injection system. I doubt that there's a single one still running it.

That may be the future; aftermarket parts adapted to the popular engines to keep them on the road, but cars like the 2003 KIA Optima will be virtually nonexistent; limited only to those that survived with functioning original equipment.
