I have the opportunity to get a brand new edelbrock performer 289 for 100, or should I wait or spend more for a performer rpm or air gap?

This is going to be paired with 9.0:1 compression, gt40p heads, and an e303 cam.
>>
>>16397399
Air gap is a meme. Stick with the regular performer
>>
>>16397399
Performer is tuned for 0 to 5500 rpm and performer rpm is tuned for 1500 to 6500 rpm

That's the only difference so pick the one that works for you
>>
>>16397556

>>
>>16397629
Think about when you want the HP/TQ not how much you want. Also I doubt 9:1 compression is enough for 320 hp.
>>
>>16397399
If you put a bigger cam in (over stock) you increase the static compression ratio as long as the dynamic C/R stays around ~8.5:1

Lemme go double check and make sure I'm not spouting *complete* bullshit
>>
>>16397714
A later intake closing (bigger cam) would increase the dynamic and lower the static.

Ideally higher rpm makes higher airspeed which can give you extra cylinder filling after BDC, if the valve is open at that time. At low port air speed you get reversion because the intake is open after BDC.

Yes

Only really care about manufacturers because of scarcity and ease of finding parts, don't care about collector "value" very much.

Definite bias towards GM engine designs, although I really think Ford nailed it with the forward distributor placement on some of them.

Chevy is by and far the cheapest as far as making power goes.

4door versions of something are always cheaper

Dodge darts/Plymouth valiant and dodge demon/Plymouth duster are still cheap and they came with many different engines from 225 slant sixes to 383 big blocks

Fox body mustangs are still pretty cheap

wait which is which
eh fuckit

Dodge Dart
Plymouth Valiant
Chrysler Cordoba (lel)
Dodge Aspen
There's still a few untainted Galaxies around
There's always Fox bodies and Turd Gen Camaros

Fairlanes seem to be right out because the boomers have gotten their shitty hands on them
AMC is out unless you like gutless 6 cylinders.

GM even sells 5.3's as 327, although they're actually a 323.
http://www.classicindustries.com/product/camaro/parts/g13033.html

Spiritually, I'd consider them to be a modernised 305, given their ubiquity and smaller bores (3.78 and 3.736 vs the regular 4'').
The 305 would smack right in the middle of the modern 4.8 and 5.3 (3.27'' stroke for the 4.8, 3.48'' for the 305 and 3.622 for the 5.3).

unbelievably gay car, especially in yellow
>>
>>16398245
What was he doing with the column shifter? Why didn't he keep it in one gear?
>>
>>16403940
He was just shifting manually with it when he got to the right speed and RPM, nothing new about that
>>
>>16403945
Wait it's not an automatic? Was he doing the three on the tree shifting?
>>
>>16403957
It is an automatic, most cars have a gear selection you know
>>
>>16403965
Sorry I'm just getting into cars, don't really know a whole lot. I usually keep to myself and lurk but I love old cars, especially the big ones as my folks used to own a car just like the one in the video. So then if it's an automatic, I still don't get why he started with the shifter all the way down then moved it up. Does that allow more power to the wheels?
>>
>>16403999
The shifter pattern is usually P R N D 2 1

By putting it all the way down, that 'forces' the transmission to start out in first gear.
More torque to the wheels because of gear reduction.
>>
>>16403999
Being a 1970, assuming it still has the original C6 transmission, it only has 3 gears, so he starts out in 1st, then shifts up into 2nd then finally onto Drive to go into 3rd.
Gets more control over the shift points that way, instead of keeping it in drive and letting the transmission shift when it wants to
>>
>>16404014
Don't Fords also start out in 2nd when the selector is in 'D'?
>>
>>16404019
Not at all.
The only Ford Transmission that does, that I know of, are the early AODs and they only sometimes start in 2nd gear if the transmission is cold, once it's warmed up it shifts through 1-3 normally
>>
>>16404012
>>16404014
>>16404019
>>16404034
Thank you for the explanation!
>>
>>16404034
Huh. What the hell am I thinking of, then.
>>
>>16404129
Are you thinking of Standard transmissions in trucks? Most trucks I've driven you always start in 2nd cause 1st is just so damn low
>>
>>16404129
>>16404034
>>16404019
Its the Ford-O-Matic from the early 50s.
When In Drive it would start in 2 and only shift to 3. You needed to select L or Low for 1-2-3
>>
>>16404831
Sorry in drive it could shift to 1 but only under very hard acceleration. Think of it like the poor mans Dynaflow
>>
>>16403999
Sometimes, if the transmission is worn out and it's a real old one, it'll try to start the car in second gear which is dumb.
Old Powerglides used to start in second unless you put it in first and they only had two gears.
>>
>>16405761
>Starting a powerglide in second
Jesus, that's a lot of converter slip
>>
>>16406115
Chebby fixed it by the late 60s iirc.
>>
>>16406499
Yeah, by making the th400 and the th350
>>
>>16406620
No actually they just adjusted the transmission to start in first, nice try tho.
>>
>>16406632
My point is that powerglide a shit
>>
>>16406651
You remember the last time you made this "point" and you got BTFO and pg edition?
>>
>>16406659
The point that a powerglide is literally only good for super high powered drag cars and gets BTFO in every other application?
>>
>>16406670
Lolno

Keep proving that you have no idea how an automatic transmission works and how final drive ratios work.
>>
>>16406684
Having the torque converter locked is more efficient than converter slip famalam. And having more gears means you can spend more time in the peak power band.
>>
>>16406698
>Having the torque converter locked is more efficient than converter slip famalam.

Jesus you're so damn retarded, even when locked a TC will still slip, it's the whole fucking point.
>>
>>16406728
It will never be completely locked, but once the converter had coupled, which is the speed when the turbine has almost reached impeller speed, you'll have more efficiency. Slipping the fuck out of converter as a powerglide has to do, roll make your acceleration suffer.

You can have a shitload of torque multiplication by starting in second or third, but you'll go slow as shit.

>Implying lockup converter s don't exist
>>
>>16406728
Furthermore, slipping the fuck out of a converter produced a lot of energy that is wasted as heat. That energy could have been used in acceleration had a better gear ratio been used
>>
>>16406759
>Slipping the fuck out of converter as a powerglide has to do, roll make your acceleration suffer.
Except they never do because first gear is short as literal fuck, of course, you continue to prove that you don't know anything.

>You can have a shitload of torque multiplication by starting in second or third, but you'll go slow as shit.
Good thing PGs haven't done that since the very earliest models.
>>
>>16406777
Going from a super short first gear, to drive ratio, which is one to one for someone with a feeble mind, will require a lot of slippage. The whole point of a turbo hydramatic being better is second gear.
>>
>>16406787
>will require a lot of slippage.

Why would you buy an automatic to powerband you retard?
You literally make no sense, not only do you have a kindergarten-tier knowledge of automatics but you can't even keep your auto correct in line.
Lmao just jump off a bridge already.
>>
>>16406859
Because you can tune an automatic to be faster on the drag strip.

And considering cars now come with 9 speed transmissions it isn't unreasonable. 10 speeds used to be semi only area because, surprise surprise, it allows the truck to remain in the power band.

Something a powerglide literally relies on heavy converter slippage to do.
>>
>>16406885
>Because you can tune an automatic to be faster on the drag strip.
retard

>And considering cars now come with 9 speed transmissions it isn't unreasonable.

You're retarded, pg is fine and evidence of this is drag racing.

>>
>>16406895
Please do tell me how a stick and a clutch are faster on the strip. I'd love to hear that explanation

And I've said it before, even in this thread, power glide is only good in mega powered drag cars because the whole operating range is pretty much peak power band.

Learn some reading comprehension, friend.

Just because it has a big engine doesn't make it a muscle car. It was designed as a sports car first and foremost.
>>
>>16409888
the very first one
pic related
>>
>>16409919
It can be argued that the rocket 88 was the first muscle car.

>>16409913
I see where you're getting at, and muscle car is a subjective definition, but I implore you to reconsider
>>
>>16409926
Except to anyone who isn't a retard (You) it isn't subjective. There is a line between muscle and Sports cars. Just because something has a big powerful engine doesn't classify it as a muscle car. The Cobra crosses the line firmly. It's developed to be at home on a road course not in the K-mart parking lot.
>>
>>16409949
There's no objective definition of a sport car. There's also no objective "muscle car"

If a lotus elan is a sports car, what does that make an Audi TTS? They're both sports cars, and both are very different.
>>
>>16409949
Why do you hate muscle cars?
>>
>>16409957
A muscle car started life as a rather mundane sedan most of the time. Legimately the difference between A Impala SS with a 409 and a normal Impala is a console, seats, trim and different drivetrain.
>>
>>16409974
So what does that make a charger? Or an AMC Marlin? Or a satellite?

Those aren't sedans, yet those are muscle cars. A muscle car has no solid definition
>>
>>16409992
The Charger and Satellite both started life as Coronets and Belvederes respectively. The Marlin is a Personal Luxury Car
>>
>>16409974
A lot of places, such as Consumer Reports, list things like Audi TT, BMW2/3/5 series, and even Corvette, Challenger, and Camaro trims/packages as sports cars, it's the exact same as your issue with muscle cars.

Happy new year, asshats.

While driving last night I noticed my vacuum going way down and my idle had shot up. When I stopped by the side of the road, I found the screw that determines how much the throttle plate is open at idle had backed itself all the way out and was sitting pretty much at 1/5 throttle opened. I screwed it back so that idle was normal and went on my way and soon enough the same thing happened. What can I do to fix this?
>>
>>16411923
Loctite?
>>
>>16411932
Maybe. The screw has a spring but the spring seemed weak
>>
>>16411779
did you change the torsion bars? what size?
>>
What's a good first muscle car that's easy to work on? I'd like a big engine bay.
>>
>>16412075
I only know Mopars, Plyouth Duster, Dodge Dart, Plymouth Valiant, Plymouth Fury (you can fit any engine in here). The A-bodies can fit big blocks but then need a lot of suspension modification

Ford Gran Torinos can be cheap, Rancheros pretty cheap too.

Chevy Novas can also be cheap and support big blocks too.

If it's a 4-door it will be cheaper than a coupe.
>>
>>16412075
For a first old car I'd get a full size car. Much cheaper, and can have the same drivetrains as the muscle car stuff usually. 455 olds 88/98, 396 caprice/Impala, 383/440 Chrysler Newport/new Yorker etc.

C'mon boys big blocks or nothing.

>>16412253
While big blocks are better, it's easier to find a commuter car with a smallblock. If you want the best value in a big block car, get a luxury sedan.
