They are in so many ways superior to sedans so why did station wagons/estates not catch on in america and why do you not have one yourself?
>>
nobody wants them due to the image
most people think theyre ugly
suvs/cuvs are better and replaced them

I wouldnt get one since they are hipster faggot tier now and look uglier than sedans
>>
The American lifestyle used to promote two cars: big trucks, and luxurious cars. Wagons were usually cheap cars, and very ugly. That image is still stuck today. Personally, I love wagons.
>>
>>16392249
I don't think it's possible for an estate to be ugly
>>
>>16392197
>Bad marketing
>Bad historical image Station wagons were made 'uncool'
> Why have that tiny little car when you could have fuck hueg suv / truck to cruise parking lots
>Only lesbos drive them

Yeah, I would probably kill to have a nice older bmw wagon, really everything you need in a car right there.

They were everywhere for several decades. It wasn't until the 2000s that they decided that minivans were generally more efficient.

this is literally why no one buys wagons

they are family moving old people cars
>>
Imo sometimes wagons are more practical then SUV's or trucks/utes.

A good example is my mate who is a semi-pro bmx rider and producer. Great storage room for his bike and camera gear. Can fit a mattress and sleep if needed. Comfortably fits five people.

In saying that, a van would be equally as practical for him but the wagon does the job.
>>
>>16392501

For some reason I read " Heliumcat "
>>
From personal experience I can say wagons are driven by 40 something men who can't get it hard but date 17 year olds.

They also look disgusting as fuck.
I understand the appeal "muh i have muh kids and muh wife but I want a sporty car"
All it is is a compromise. An ugly, nasty compromise. After your wife gave you an ultimatum and you were too much of a pussy to do the right thing.
>>
wagons were the uncool car from previous generations. now theyre old and uncool, which is a double whammy. there's no reason to not get a CUV if you want a wagon or a small hatchback like a fit or a mazda 3.
>>
>>16392531
And sedans aren't?
>>
>>16392197
Because SUVs/trucks aren't held to the same emissions regulations, making them superficially cheap.
>>
>>16392215
>SUV/CUVS are better
SUV: heavier, worse mpgees, can't turn, rollover risk
CUV: heavier, pointlessly tall, rollover risk
Not. Comparable.

The real answer is "because hatchbacks". The difference is one less fucking window pillar and much better weight distribution/less length for similar or equivalent utility. Why would you buy a wagon over a hatchback, which is a refined version of the wagon and fills the exact same niche?

>>16393557
CUVs fill a different niche. They exist to get the people that wanted SUVs for the safe/powerful feeling of the added height but didn't need to actually go offroad or carry more shit than you can fit in a hatchback, and to improve fleet averages while doing it. They exist because cars sell for more reasons than pure practicality. They sell for subjective reasons and regulatory necessity too!
>>
Am I on nega-/o/? Wagons are generally loved here.
>>
>>16393593
>rollover risk

son this hasn't been an issue since ESC.
>>
>>16393593
The hatchback thing is true to a point, but most hatches have much less room in back than a proper wagon.

It's not enough to really make a difference when you can go over the seats, fold the seats down, or take them out. Just cram the kids closer together, leave one home, or get a truck.

it can easily be the difference between can fit a bike and can't fit a bike.

I have one. It was my first car growing up. 1979 toyota corona wagon. 20r engine. I would post a pic but i got a new phone recently so i dont have one saved on here. The reason no one buys them is because they are uncool (to the general masses) and because most people who would drive one will either just buy a van or large suv/truck.

>>16393615
>Backseat passengers OR cargo (hatchback)
vs
>Backseat passengers AND cargo (wagon)
for approximately the same volume of non-passenger cargo- that's a pretty clear increase in utility.

Granted, not everyone needs it. A lot of people will be served just fine by the hatchback, at least with infrequent passengers or small kids or whatever. The fact that you don't need the extra space doesn't make them "equivalent" though, it just makes the bigger option overkill for your needs.

Doesn't even need to be barge sized. If you only use the third row sparsely it's sufficient to be E-Class or V70 sized to fit folding seats for two minors below the cargo floor in place of the spare wheel (or in case of the E-Class I think even despite the spare wheel unless you have an AMG model).

People who use the third row all the time will buy a larger vehicle anyway, like a Tahoe or Suburban or something.

The only big difference with sedans is aesthetics and in some cases the ability to have 7 seats. The amount of cargo they can haul isn't much different unless you fill it above the lid which obstructs your vision anyways. Also they are heavier than sedans and their chassis is less stiff.

I like wagons though.
>>
>>16395514
I would i think stock it puts out 200hp
>>
>>16393615
Yes it's enough to make a difference. The real cargo competitor to the wagon is the sedan, as a hatchback is basically a chopped sedan.
As I said above, the main difference is that some wagons can have 7 seats.

And the facelift rear lights are much worse for the sedan. I prefer the pre-facelift 9-3. That design is more solid. No fake grills and other design trend bs like that.
>>
>>16404745
A mix of the 9-3 and 9-5 would do wonders.
I both love the facelift 9-3 3nd gen front, and the face lifted 1st gen 9-5 but I hate the 2nd gen and 3nd gen 9-3 rear and facelifted 9-5 rear while the old 9-5 rear is nice.

the facelifted 9-5 front with it's chrome around the headlights are awful, but the 2nd gen black masked 9-3 rear is fucking gorgeous.

My favorite 9-5 is the first facelift (the one in your picture) because of nicer front grill. The pre-facelift has nicer rear lights tho.

Yeah, meant 2nd gen, saw it and removed it on the other parts but forgot one as you saw.

You have the same taste as me then.
One big flaw with all the facelift 9-5 is that the pre-face lift use glass and don't yellow out after a while, the one I have is fully spec'd and I love it.
Tuned to 320HP/545Nm, sadly it uses the Kenwood audio system and I haven't made it work with aux yet.
I have a spare JVC 2-DIN BT/AUX/USB stereo, but then I lose radio and steering wheel features.

It'd be very helpful if you could point out a good aux set, since I've had bad luck with finding a cheap one that doesn't involve sleeving my own connections.

Holy moly, yeah it's pricy for what it does.

Much thanks for helping me out though.

I had the JVC in my previous 9-5 (Sedan Aero with Stage 1) and maybe I'll just have to live with moving my hand 2 feet so I can click on the stereo instead on the wheel when I change songs or what not.
bonus that I can make it the same color as the interior orange (looks brighter due to camera being picky, but looks almost identical when looking with the naked eye).

I will probably go with this crap cause I need the aux. Right now I have a good looking aftermarket stereo with useless cd player and no aux.
The original stereo with working tape deck and an aux would be ideal. Maybe someday I will figure how to make it happen.

Did your 9-3 have the 2-din or the 1-din?
The cassette to 3.5mm is a cheap solution while it's sound isn't aux or USB tier, it's still better than most BT transmissions.

They're for soccer moms, hipsters, and teenage girls. No thanks.

I wouldn't use that abomination of an adapter even if I would have the tape deck. Sound quality matters.

Confirmed. I have a hatchback Mazda6 which has the look of a sedan, but great if you buy a tv or washingmashine or christmastree, but in this case 3 people tops. Wagon would be good for 5 people and a washing mashine.
As a next car I'd like a strong wagon, like an S70 T5, or A6 above 220HP

fun fact: they came both with a regular trunk or a hatch, the placement of the antenna on the roof or the tailgate is the only major giveaway as to which a particular car has. i was very surprised the first time i saw a hatchback one as my 6 had the regular trunk

roof or the glass, sorry

I was amazed to learn that they were even sold in the US. Four door liftback hatches are usually a European thing.

That's not a hatchback faggot. That's a liftback sedan. This is a car forum, use your terms accurately.

is this a hybrid design where it can open either way or is that 2 different versions of the car. it looks like the one with the glass lifted has a hinge mechanism in the right spot?
>>
>>16408548
Yes, it's dual way on a single model. I think they call it the Twindoor.

lmao, projecting much? I live in New England and I've literally never seen or heard of this stereotype. Mostly old ladys have wagons where I live. Besides, what compromises? If we're talking about the wagon version of a car that's already a sedan I can't see where the compromise is. Aside from maybe 100lbs at most extra weight in the rear the driving experience is likely the same as the sedan. I have a Legacy wagon but I test drove a Legacy sedan before buying the wagon and there was literally zero discernible difference from the driving seat. Same engine, same transmission, no difference from the driver's seat. Better outward visibility than the sedan too.

Already done them and started running 10w 60w did it in my drive way with 4 tall jack stands , engine hoist + alot a cussing (still oddly easier than when iwas swapping all my bushings to urathane (so many sizzeezed bolts from former dealer b.s)
>>
>>16409506
Oh and 0w - 40w for the winter. After some wear check lab tests ( oil analysis) ive came to the conclusion in my mind that the v8 s4 should have been 10w 60w or atleast a 5w 50w from factory like the bmw v8 (both are alusil blocks)
