That depends mostly on the amount of rust on these bolts.

What effects the sound of an engine? I've seen 2 different i4 engines, similar displacement and borexstroke numbers but one sounds like a 4banger and the other a truck. What could be doing this?

It's not anything like the exhaust as it follows the entire line, not just some vapefag putting on a 4" fartcannon. CA18 vs SR20 if anyone cares

Opinions on old rx7? Keep the 12a or swap to 13b?

My goal is na power, I was thinking I could buy a 13b, street port, turbo, and set up my rx7 to take it, keep the 12a and look for another shell, so that way I can get my turbo and na fix.

But for the short term, 12a or 13b?
>>
>>16378922
I have a half bridgeported 13B in my FB. It's way too much for the street. Probably about 200whp, NA. Peak power was raised to about 9000rpm and there's nothing down low. Like an 80s turbo car but more severe. Loud as hell too. Definitely do a less aggressive port or else you'll be waking up the whole county with braps.

Why does my 91 ranger idle so terribly? Once I get up to around 40mph it's nearly silent compared to this. Notice it sounds like it was about to stall out half way through video or something. I've read about the IAC which I will check soon if it needs cleaned, the check engine light has been for the awhile but I was told that was because the temp guages are mostly dead which I am replacing in the video, engine light still on so have a scanner coming thursday.

I meant almost every gauge is non-working. I have an entire cluster replacement but I can't get any slack on the speedometer cable to pull it out to unplug and put in the new one so I'm testing if I can just swap out the individual modules as some people have suggested as a resolution for no slack behind cluster.

Hood pins work fine, but they won't keep your bonnet as firmly as the traditional latch.
The bonnet will probably vibrate like crazy unless you install them so they pull quite hard on it, which will bend the metal pretty noticeably over time

Will a 275/35-20 tire fit on a 20x8.5 wheel without too much issue? Specifically, I'm looking at getting Mickey Thompson Street Comps on staggered AMR wheels. 305/35-20 on 20x10's in the rear and 275/35-20 on 20x8.5 in the front. The smallest wheel width recommended for the 275/35-20 is 9", so if it won't work I'd have to drop to a 255/35-20 which will be a bit narrow.

I need to top up some gear oil (some dropped out while rebuilding the CV axle) and the transmission calls for API GL-4, which I can't find locally and I can't wait to order. My understanding is that GL-5 is not compatible with GL-4 because it will react with the brass in the synchros.

/k/ here, I need your help /o/

Got my first car, a beater 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, and it drove pretty well for about a month but yesterday it just gave out on me.

It won't start, it won't even turn over, I got a buddy to help my try and jump it but all it did was make a click sound when I tried to turn it on.

The dash lights turn on and headlights turned on at full power when hooked up but are dim when I turn the key once and they all shut off when I try to turn it over.

I think it may be my battery and my starter but my buddy keeps telling me its the alternator, I'm tight on money and was hoping to fix it myself.

Please help guys

>why can't cars be simple like my guns
>>
>>16379969
The AX4 is known for having a weak parking pawl.
It's fine if you don't park on seriously steep hills. If you do, then you just have to set the parking brake.
The Taurus is a good appliance car. You're not going to win any races in one (Except maybe against a moped lel) but it's plenty roomy and comfy.
>>
>>16380003
Bring it to a shop they need to be balanced as well. It's not impossible to do tires yourself but you need some know how and some specific tools to do it, and you can't do a dynamic balance at home once you're done
>>
>>16380009

Get a new battery, chances are the one in it is fairly old. They normally have a date tag on the top which shows when it was installed, if it's more than a few years old, it'd be a good bet to replace it.

Next step, go to the hardware store and buy a $20 digital multimeter if you don't have one. Start car with the new battery, assuming the new battery works. Hook up your new multimeter to the battery and see what voltage it's putting out. It should be somewhere above 13 volts when the car is running.

If the voltage is low with the car running, chances are the alternator is bad. Google how to replace it.

Alternatively, you could google how to replace the alternator and just pull it off and bring it to advance auto or some other place that will test it for free. You can also bring them your battery and they'll charge it for free last I knew.

Also, when jump starting a car, have the running vehicle rev the engine a bit, like to 1500-2000 RPM or so, to make sure the alternator will put out enough volts/amps to charge the dead battery, and let it do that for 3-5 minutes. Some cars are smart enough to limit amperage output of the alternator at idle to keep the engine from stalling out, so just letting it idle may not do the trick.

Look in the manual, it will also say you need to buy oils of a certain specification that looks like API SN or ACEA C3

Oils are defined by two sequences, one is viscosity (like 5W30) and the other is the quality standard (like the two I just mentioned)
Viscosity alone says nothing about the quality of the oil, you can have both garbage oils and amazing oils with the same viscosity.
What defines the quality is the API/ACEA spec (first is American, the other is European).

Your engine has been designed with one oil or a small group of oils in mind, when you go shopping for oil, you need to look at the API/ACEA spec and then choose which viscosity suits you best based on ambient temperature.

So, if your manual says you need an ACEA A3/B3 or higher, for example, you can buy the cheapest oil you can find with that spec and be sure that your engine will survive it.

Unless you have different needs (like racing or towing a lot) you can just look at the recommended spec and be done with it.

Your manual says to buy Toyota oil because of commercial deals with oil suppliers, but nothing bad will happen to your engine if you buy different oils as long as you stay with the recommended spec.

I have a 2004 Monte Carlo 3.4 that is overheating sporadically. Long story short I have replaced the water pump, thermostat, and radiator cap. It seems that the coolant will all flow into the overflow tank and not returning to the radiator.

Any ideas? I am totally at a loss here. I can give more details if needed
>>
I am sexually attracted to sharp edges and pop up headlights.
>>
>>16380114
>It seems that the coolant will all flow into the overflow tank and not returning to the radiator.
If that were true, you would spill coolant everywhere as the tank can't contain all the coolant inside the radiator, it's just meant to hold the coolant that naturally expands when heating. There's gallons of coolant all around the engine, it can't all be contained in that tank.

Anyway, if you still think that's the problem, then you have a problem in the hose going out of the radiator (usually placed down low), try to remove it and see if there,s something clogging it.

I don't think you will find anything, it could be something as simple as bubbles of air that haven't been properly bled when you worked on the system or a bad temp sensor

With the infinite information on the Internet at your disposal, you can do anything, you just have to believe, and do it. Can I hire a mechanic to come look at a used car with me and give it a relatively thorough inspection at the lot?

The dealer is so big of a fucker that he's "not in the business of giving test drives unless he has money in hand". I have met him twice and he is your typical 60+ year old asshole used car dealer who hates dealing with anyone. I assume he realizes he has a decent car and doesn't need to take liberties to even fake being pleasant to his customers
>>
>>16383166

Strut tower bars on top in the engine bay are easy, the ones you install in the trunk sometimes are, the ones that install on the bottom can be difficult depending on how the suspension geometry is
>>
>>16383179
A mechanic alone can't do much if the car is sitting in a lot.
Of course he can take a look under the bonnet and search for something obviously wrong, but there are a lot of things to look for and you need to at least put the car on jacks.
I doubt your dealer will let you raise the car right there on his lot.

Try to insist in a test drive, show him you have the money but don't give it to him of course.
Once you have the car, bring it to a mechanic for inspection.

I am afraid you are going to waste money if you hire a mechanic to come with you.

You are just better off taking lots of pictures of the car (engine, wheels, interior and whatever you can see under the car) and post them here or show them to a mechanic

Take a wrench and cut it in half.
It may seem like a waste of a good wrench, but one day you'll have to change something else and that half wrench will fit just right to get the job done quickly.

If nothing else fits and you have to get a special socket for it, then go for the half wrench.

Car sat for 2 day under carport over my weekend.
Started it this morning and backed out of the carport. Revved it (lightly) twice, then it died.
Now, it'll crank, but won't start. What the fuck did I do? I thought I flooded it, but I don't smell any gas and it still won't start after several hours.
Fuses all look fine, I really hope my fuel filter hasn't given up...

Get in your car and turn the key, if you can hear the pump it is ok.
if you don´t hear it unplug the fuel line anywhere after the pump and put a cup under it.
turn the key again , if fuel comes out it works, if not your fuel pump doesn´t work for some reason.

Controlled much better, you get to choose what takes the brunt of the force, the clutch, tires or transmission. Drop clutch launches will good for peeling out, really fuck up your trans. Burning your clutch at high rpms will lower its life quite a bit, but save your tranny. Clutches cost less than tranny's but how often do you want to replace it?

Hey there, when we went to go start it, this was back in September, and we haven't touched it since. Basically, we went to go start it (all fluids were checked - old but still good enough to do a test start). It didn't fire; did a single crank like I originally stated, and we gave up. A little later I went back outside and noticed some liquid residue around the front right tire. We determined it to be tranny fluid and have since put a tarp over it, waiting for winter to end.

And a new tranny on the cheap? Mhmm we might look into that.

Anyway, there is a nut holding the arm in place, probably covered by a piece of plastic, loosen that bolt, remove the arm, put it back so it stays where you want it, tighten the bolt and try to operate the wipers, they should be OK now.

Buying a new car and as part of the "dealership care package" they put something called Resistol or Resistall? on the paint and on the seats and carpets that's supposed to protect the paint for a year and stop stains forming form spills on the interior.
Now I've never heard of that shit before, and I'm very paranoid about putting shit on my paint.
Typically I would put something like Gyeon Quartz on myself (or have it done) and tell them not to do shit to my car, but it's already been done.
Is it going to cause any problems?
One thing I'm paranoid is that it feels like cooled seats seats don't blow as cold (from the little holes) as I seem to remember on a different car I test drove a few weeks ago so I'm kind of paranoid that the coating got in the little holes and blocked them when they applied it. Could be just my imagination though.
From what I understand it's like a wax. I also don't know if it's a different compound for interior/exterior use but I would assume so.

P.S. Don't worry, I made them discount it from the price of the car, so I'm not worried about if it's worth the charge, just if it would cause damage and/or if I'm better off immediately having it buffed off and applying something like Gyeon or Kamikazi Miyabi.

Not quite, but rather its like $20-30 for tire and $10 for labor/shit. Totaling $40+.

I've done one tire replacement via this method. Another person I know has done the same. They didn't see anything wrong with this cost. I was weary given that if I can do it myself, and buy new for $40-50. I figure its much better to get the new tire with warranty/replacement/repair than going the used-tire method.

Happy holidays everyone. I am changing my fuel filter and currently I have the one pic related.
Now, I went to auto store for a fuel filter and they gave me an inline plastic filter. (link related http://www.jtoutfitters.com/images/2330015010.jpg )
Now I am confused. Where the fuck am I supposed to mount it? And if my fuel line came from bottom how the fuck do I adjust it for the plastic inline one?

From the filter you have, it's an EFI 2E-E engine (High pressure fuel system). That plastic filter is for the carburetted engines (low pressure fuel system)

Can /o/ give me a 2nd or 3rd opinion on this? I've been emailing the lady for a few days, she has been pretty up front about the vehicle, her husband bought it from the dealership forever ago.

VIN corroborates this, as well as the leak in the accelerator pump in the carb. So, two questions: would this car be worth wrenching on? I'd love to drive it but I don't want to spend another 5k just to get it road worthy. Yes, I know the rotary meme and and prepared for it.

Second question, for the carb leak, how would I fix it? She has a mechanic (a shop I can visit) who claims that the leak is the only problem, so my thought was that I could just fix the problem and drive home, instead of trailoring. Thoughts? How would I do that, what part?
>>
>>16395943
Price of a new steel rim then lol. Alignment appears fine and no vibration. Be OK to drive on for a bit?
>>
>>16394102
There's corrosion in the socket or a bad ground.
Take the headlight out, unplug it, and plug it back in. Do that a couple times, then put some silicone grease on the tabs and put it back together.
>>
>>16395960
>Take it back.
No. I have an EE90, but my engine is 2E. It is infact a carburetted engine.

Now, the image I posted was the most similiar to the current fuel filter I have as it is not an inline one, and it is metal one that can be bolted somewhere inside the engine bay. It was too dark to take a picture of mine. So I searched for a similiar one.
Now I got this plastic one and I don't know how the hell do I bolt it anywhere and if its inline how do I connect the fuel lines. Also it seems i didn't get any gaskets with the plastic one.
Do I even need them?

You have no idea what you are in for.
Be prepared for hard to find parts. And yes you are going to spend double the asking price to get it road worthy, but for an SA?
I'd do it in a blink if it was near me.
If I were you I would ask her to take the car to do compression test. I'd pay her 50$ to drive the car 2 days.
It is worth it incase the car is shit you will save yourself a shitton of money and another chance to look at another SA if this one turns faulty.
Either way, ask her to fix the carb leak. If she does then give her full 2k if thats the only real problem. Otherwise, buy it for 1-1.5k.
>>
>>16396046
Everyone has told me about the hard to find parts, but I've already found 2 online catalogs full of rx7 parts, yes they cost money, but they're not hard to find, just a Google away.

How would you word it if you were to say to the lady "fix it or take less?"

Compression test may have already been done, I'll ask if she has recent papers. The VIN said it had been serviced as recent as November 2011.

Ah, OK. My mistake.

The plastic filter you posted is meant to go into a clip (You can sort of see it on the right side of this pic, on the firewall)
It doesn't need any gaskets, only the hose and hose clamps.

>And if my fuel line came from bottom how the fuck do I adjust it for the plastic inline one?

The fuel line should make a transition from steel line to rubber somewhere near the bottom of the firewall. Chances are you can just replace the hose with a longer hose and get some more radius for the curve.

I'd try to haggle her first, make sure to set a price she would not be comfortable with 1.5k is good as it won't make her pissed. And be adamant about it.
After a while of back and forth tell her you will cut her a deal where you will pay full price if she fixes the carb leak.
Usually this kind of thing is normal in my eurotard country (Croatia).
You would have to tire her out first though for her to give in to fixing the carb, where she finds it more of a hassle to fight it for the couple hundred dollars more than to send it to mech to fix the carb leak.
On a regular carb its not even hard to do yourself provided you have the schematics and diagrams. But im not sure about rotary carb. Though I suppose the carb itself is not much different from the usual one. After all its purpose is to mix air and fuel.

just want to bounce this question off someone else.
my truck is a mutant box truck built on a dodge 318 drivetrain with a chevy 350 alternator.
the alternator had some weird wiring going on and has lately worn through, and i need to replace it.

Which wires need to come out of the alternator and which ones need to go from the ignition to the coil?
Pic related is the alternator. I have a heavy wire connected to #1. there is a smaller yellow wire I'm assuming plugs in to #3.
I'm taking the yellow wire to a pink wire that also connects to "IGN1" and the positive terminal on the ignition coil.
Theres also another red wire coming from the ignition labeled "IGN2." Is this one important?
Should I also connect #2 and #4 from the alternator? Like it currently doesn't have a ground, but does it ground through the bolts? sketchy af.

thanks in advance. will respond with pictures of beautiful russians.

Thank you so much for helping me clear this out. Does the engine bay in pic belong to you?
I'd want to do a couple more things and since I don't have a manual I am having trouble identifying some parts in the engine bay.
I also have a simple tachometer that I would like to install but I don't know where to wire the green wire (to measure the RPM signals).
If the engine bay indeed belongs to you (it is very beautiful and clean) I would ask of you if you could identify a few parts. pic related

>>16381140
Yep. alternatively just wirewheel everything before you do and soak it all in PB Blaster for a few hours and freeze them off (freeze-off or computer duster held upside down).
>>
So I'm having trouble after using a time-sert (fully threaded steel insert) on the aluminum caliper of my motorcycle to fix stripped threads. The threads stripped again after I installed a insert that's meant to be way stronger than the original threads (same kit is used to fix Northstar V8 head bolts and Ford spark plug threads).

Why would threads strip if you're
>not over-torquing (used torque wrench set to 22 ft-lbs)
>threading the bolts in by hand without resistance when mounting
>inserting the bolts into the completed insert before mounting without issues/resistance
>the insert itself isn't backing out or spinning in place, instead the threads are being torn out of the insert by the stainless steel hex bolt I'm using for caliper bolts

Maybe its bottoming out against the bottom of the insert?

Or I put it at enough of a slight angle that once mounted it misses the threads?

To make it trickier the other caliper bolt I did on the same caliper hits 25 ft-lbs without issues when I mount it.

Oh hey, I just remembered something.

Instead of messing with the distributor, you can take the tachometer drive off the igniter module. Pic related. That way you only have to deal with getting the wire through the firewall and getting a schematic to figure out exactly which wire goes to the negative side of the coil.

Power. Hmm. You can use a fuse tap like in >>16390688 or splice in to the radio power wire.
Please don't use vampire taps. Solder and shrink tube are the absolute best way of splicing.

I have 4 wires, I think I can easily wire the white one for the dimmer, and ground the black one. With green one for RPM signal you have drastically eased my search, but for power I wonder if I should splice into the radio power wire since Im not sure if it would be constantly on or only when radio works. (and I can turn my radio without a key or anything).

Since you can turn on the radio even without ignition signal, it means the radio is getting constant power and you can use that for your power wire.
Most modern aftermarket radios (and a lot of old OEM, non-can bus ones) work with two wires, a constant +12 used primarily for channel memory and quick startup and an ignition current which is what prevents you from turning the radio on when there is no key.
You can get power from both, but the ignition wire will shut off everything connected to it when the key is in position 1 or removed.

Your instrument should work perfectly regardless of the wire, but it will not work without a key. There is no point in having a tach working with a stopped engine anyway
>>
>>16396616
Jokes on them, I'm 13
>>
>>16396625
Im more worried of light that will power it when it turns on. Possibly draining the battery if its constantly on.
>>
>>16396625
It's probably best if he wires into something that turns off with the ignition because those tachs do use a little bit of power. Cigar lighter maybe?

>>16396601
The dimmer, just so you know, is a ground-out type. That means the dimmer knob is actually between the instrument lights and ground.

I can find similar wiring diagrams, but remember when I said it's a mutant truck? None of them specifically look like what I've got.
>>16396555
Sorry I dont know what this means.

I've got an incredibly shoddy diagram reconstructing the scene of the crime.
The pigtails are literal degraded and disconnected wires t-spliced into the circuit. The green alternator cable had come in spliced as was shorting on the engine block when I found it.
>>
>>16396651
Yeah then find an ignition wire.
Easiest to find is the one coming from the key barrel, but I'm sure there are plenty around the dashboard and pretty much most of the engine is ignition driven if you already have the instrument's wires on that side of the car.

You can spot ignition wires easily with a multimeter or a dumb test light
>>
I'm trying to figure out if I need a better car or snow or not
next year I'll be driving around in Pullman, WA. it's in eastern Washington on the Idaho border. it has really harsh winters and lots of hills that get very icy. also I'll be driving through the cascade mountain pass in the winter multiple times as well. should I get something AWD or 4X4? right now I have a 97 accord, the transmission is going out and that's pretty expensive to fix. Instead of spending the money to rebuild the tranny I kinda want to put it towards getting something better but I'm not sure if it's worth it
>>
>>16396661
You can still reconstruct the scene with a multimeter and an actual genuine wiring diagram.
You just have to know where the wire starts (could be a fuse, an ECU or whatever) and then it's just a matter of finding which one of the wires you have give you a current when touching both its ends.

Let's say a diagram tells you the wire going to pin 2 in your alternator starts on pin 60 of your ECU (just throwing random numbers here, I have no idea where your wires actually go), then you go to the ECU connector, insert one probe of the multimeter inside pin 60 and then start touching all the other wires you have with the other probe until you find the one that makes your multimeter beep.
Once that's done, with all the wires, you can easily connect them where they belong
>>
>>16396691
To add on this: even if your wiring is all fucked and they are all shorting or badly joined all over the place, you can still cut everything out and set up new wires with the right colours and going to the right places.
You still need know where every wire goes before doing that tho

ok here's what I got for internally regulated.

"terminal" 4 on your original illustration is actually a hole that you jam a screwdriver or something in to test the alternator
DO NOT jam stuff in that hole.

also yes it's normal for an alternator to ground through the bolts. it won't hurt anything if you run a ground wire from it so if it makes you feel better go ahead.
>>
>>16396691
Yeah man, the issue is that this truck doesn't have any fuses and certainly no ecu. It's from 71 and again, is unlike any other vehicle in existence.

Good news is I just put both IGN cables to the coil and the tail from the alt is disconnected from everything. It's running now. Not sure if it will continue running when I throw it into the off position, but it should.

The battery is a little tired and am letting it charge. I'm getting 13.6 volts to the battery. Which is good right?

So when I bought my Firebird, the battery was 100% dead and had been for a while. The keyless remote is sending out a signal (checked it at the store) but it's not working. So I'm assuming the car's receiver has been reset and needs to be reprogrammed. How would I go about doing that or is it not a DIY thing?

It's OBD I GM obviously.

When torque is listed as "103 ft-lbs. @4600rpm" does that mean that 4600rpms is where the peak amount of torque is? Or does it mean that it has 103ft-lbs before 4600 rpms then the ft-lbs drop off after 4600rpms?

Do you just need to interrupt the wire or you need to connect something else to that?

If you just need to cut, then cut away all the exposed metal wire from each end of the gap, bend the last inch or so of wire so it makes an U bend on itself, take some thermal insulation (or whatever you call that thing that shrinks with heat), cover the whole U bend and heat it with a lighter. Secure the wire somewhere so it doesn't flap around and your are done.

If you need to connect something else and you don't want to solder, you can take the crimpable part of a faston connector and cut it away from the actual connector part.
Then you take the two wires that need to be joined, expose some metal, twist the exposed parts together and bend them back on the rest of one of the wires.
Don't forget to insert some thermal insulation before you twist the wires together, you'll need it later.
Take the crimpable half of a faston connector and crimp it around both the twisted part and the insulated wire on which they are resting, cover everything with the thermal sheath and heat it. Secure the wires and you are done.

If you don't use an oversized faston connector, the crimp should last forever and the wires will never come apart.

It's much quicker than soldering in some cases, but you need a bunch of faston connectors, a faston crimper and that shrinking insulation thing.

Given they should drive the same due to the same platform, I'd probably choose a tricked out Avalon.

It's a Toyota, so it doesn't carry the flashiness of the Lexus badge.

I haven't researched it, but I'm gonna take a stab that a fully optioned Avalon is less expensive than entry/mid-tier ES.

Speaking of the Focus, maybe you guys have an idea what's up with it. It won't consistently start, it doesn't even try to turn over when it doesn't start I will just hear a sort of buzzing noise. After stepping off the clutch and resetting the key, it will usually start.

Stupid questions that are vehicle specific, tried Googling but I'm not sure how to word it for a search that will return relevant results:

2017 Camaro 2SS

>Question 1:
Is there any way to turn the car systems on without turning over the motor? The equivalent to the ACC or ON/RUN positions in a car with a key ignition where you can power and use the accessories like radio, windows, wipers, etc. without the engine running?
Push to start if it wasn't clear.

>Question 2:
My G meters work while driving and turning/braking but for some reason if I take off from a standing start and do something like a 0-60 or 0-100 the G meters show 0.
I suspect it might be disabled on purpose so people don't try to "beat" recorded Gs, but then again there's an instrument to record a 0-60 time so it seems a bit silly to disable G tracking on a standing start but have a timer specifically for it.
Am I doing something wrong?

I was thinking that at first, but it measures the braking G, so it seems a bit silly that it would measure lateral and and negative acceleration but not positive acceleration...
There's several different G meters on the car, on of them is specifically for lateral, then there's a traction circle, and a G value in one of the HUD views. It's at least measured on the traction circle so it's not a faulty sensor, but for whatever reason no number is recorded or shown for positive acceleration.

I'm guessing it either has to be on purpose or there has to be some combination of settings (like have G meter in HUD, traction circle on dash, and sport/track mode on) that I'm not meeting. Either way, dumb.
