I have to pass a driving test first, in a big van I'm unfamiliar with. I have failed it three times now, because I have some TERRIBLE driving habits and got a nasty concussion a couple of months before the last one.
There are openings fairly often, so I'm just going to keep trying as long as I can keep taking the tests.
The driving manager likes me, so I can probably get away with skill grinding.

What do you guys think of equipment rental companies?
They're offering me a job. It's gonna be a little one axle slide truck which only requires a B class license but they prefer if the driver has a class A which I have.

I have my class A but I've not driven a tractor trailer vehicle since I got my license this January. They say they have 6 tractor trailers and that, if in the future I want it, I can convert to semi and they'll help me get used to it again. They're automatics anyway so it should be ez.

My current job is so comfy tho. Since it's slow I'm getting paid the whole day just to show up pretty much. I wonder if I should take the plunge.

I mean just yesterday I had no deliveries except for a stove I had to get from another of our stores. Well in my current job I'm commuting 25 miles one way. Hours are from 6AM to 2:30PM.
In the morning it takes me around 30-35min to get to work. Coming back is usually 40-45min but in case there was an accident, or I left the store late that can turn into a 60-90min commute home. Plus I pay a $5 toll to cross a bridge every day.

In the potential new job I'd commute 16 miles one way. Similar hours to my current job so the trip to work would be 20-25min. Since I'd be leaving work at around 4-5PM the commute back home might be heavier so I might do those 16 miles in 40-60min.

So it's around the same shit minus the bridge toll.

Yeah that's what I like about it. They give you training to learn how to drive all the shit they rent out. Forklifts, boomlifts, big forklifts, scissor lifts. So you pretty much just drive those toys on top of your truck, deliver, pick up, for the whole day.

What I'm doing currently is similar tho. I load my truck with a forklift and unload it the same way. SOMETIMES I do a little bit of physical work when I need to take an open pallet of concrete/blocks/etc but that's not too bad. So it's really easy.

That's the one thing you gotta remember about most driving jobs (especially local ones). There are busy seasons and slow seasons. Unless you are specifically guaranteed 40hrs, you might have some really slow weeks where they send you home one or two days and you only get like 28hrs. I know our other Pepsi warehouse just to the north, as well as many others, will send drivers home in the morning when they cut routes. We are actually lucky they don't do it to us and our main plant manager gets shit about it from the higher ups but always fights them on it.

Yeah pretty much. They say in the slow season they give you the option that if you finished early you can go home or go back to the shop and they'll put you do do something to at least make the 8hr for the day. Pre-loading your truck, helping in sales, etc.

Only thing I don't like is that they have those two-way driver cameras. The ones that record 8 seconds before and after an incident. I mean I guess as long as you don't do anything wrong you shouldn't worry about it but still.

Depends. It costs more to put that shit on the trailers. Plus I'm sure drivers are always breaking them by running over big curbs or backing into docks with the things still open. There's probably some Gov't tax credit too and it will save fuel in the long run but a ton of the "Green" bullshit is for the public image.

Pepsi has some """Hydrogen Powered""" tractors that do regional stuff and I was checking one out and I don't even understand it. Like when available, the hydrogen can supplement regular diesel but I couldn't see any big storage tanks or fancy shit so when they do fill it with hydrogen it probably makes very little difference and I'm guessing they fill the hydrogen tank once every couple years just because it isn't convenient.

I started out with them a few years ago out in Indiana... Hated every single minute working there. The supervisors are sadistic and dispatch will leave you on the side of the road. Essentially I spent more time on the dock than I did in a cab and quit after I got written up and almost fired after I cussed out a supervisor. Haven't looked back since.
