That and other eastern cars. Most of them were far outdated when they were being concieved but I find them fascinating anyway.
They are a tiny window into what cars can be like when created with completely different priorities and standards in mind.

can you reach any higher? sure, boxer engines have more of a gravitational affect since they lay flat, but the time it would take to erode the metal is practically negligible. an I4 has about the same chance of uneven piston wear.

Ehh, those engines aren't good for anything other than reliable A to B transport, really. They're simple and economical but there's like zero aftermarket support/mods out there.

The R32 is not that fast. 8:22 on the hurr durr ring.

A front-heavy car. 60:40 weight distribution means it needs serious camber. The front of the car lifts at speed which only makes understeer characteristics worse.

The early RB26 was not the best. Most notably the oil pump gear is extremely weak. Supertec makes a spline drive kit that adapts the 2JZ oil pump gear design to the RB26.

Ceramic turbos will shatter at the first sign of detonation in the engine and the pieces of the exhaust wheel will be sucked into the cylinder and score the walls if you lift off when it happens. The N1 engines came with steel turbos that don't do this. Garrett makes bolt-on turbos that resolve these issues.

The 5 speed on the R32 and R33 is not the strongest. It works for the stock 330HP or so the RB26 makes but that's about it. Third gear has a weak synchro and is commonly broken from hard use. It is common to use the Getrag V160 from the R34 as an upgrade but this requires a new final drive and is major work.

Stock brakes are nothing special. Shared with the 240SX. Nismo and a few other companies make upgrades that improve on this.

Intake plenum out of the box is not balanced. Cylinder 6 is lean. The turbo intake piping is horribly designed and very easily causes turbo shuffle if you upgrade to more modern turbochargers with better spool because the air inlet is awful and joins at nearly 90 degree angles for the two turbos which causes turbulent airflow. Nismo and a few other companies make upgrades that fix this.

The RB26 itself is a very out of date engine by the time it was in the R34. It was never updated with VVT like the 2JZ and as a result emissions and response are honestly not very good. HKS makes a VVT retrofit called VCAM which adapts the 2JZ system to the RB26. It is expensive as fuck.

The R32 was a fun car but not a fast one. It had a lot of obvious problems. The R33 and R34 were a major improvement.

I should also mention, the R32 in its day was the fastest thing out there. There is a reason why it killed Group A racing. But in retrospect it had a lot of flaws.
>>
>>16370117

You can still find relatively new RX-8s to buy. I saw one with 9000 km on it in ontario for sale.
>>
>>16365601
Other issues with the R32:

1. Poor rustproofing from the factory. It will not survive a winter anywhere that sprays salt. Which is why I pity retards that buy R32s from Canada.

2. Oil is not dry sump. As a result under hard cornering oil starvation is a real problem. Baffled oil pans are a must at the very minimum.

3. The R32 fuel tank is huge and is placed in an area where the fill amount significantly impacts the weight distribution. In cornering fuel sloshing around causes very noticeable changes in driving dynamics.

4. HICAS on the R32 is hydraulic. It reacts slowly as a result and is very painful to maintain and repair compared to the later electric HICAS on the R33 and R34.

5. All R32, R33, and R34 use a super shitty g sensor that is essentially an oil-filled pendulum with some springs. Your smartphone has a more accurate and faster-reacting g-sensor and we just use it to figure out when to rotate the screen. Midori Seibi and Do Luck both make digital g-sensor replacements that are significantly cheaper than the OEM electro-mechanical system.

6. The R32 ECU is an 8-bit microcontroller. State of the art for the 1980s. It's outdated now. R33 and R34 both got 16-bit ECUs that were much faster-reacting.

7. Stock R32, R33, and R34 all lacked cooling for hard use. Oil cooler, differential cooler, and additional brake cooling are all needed for hard use. The UKDM spec R33s received extra cooling just to handle extended use over 100 MPH.

8. The stock R32 chassis is extremely weak in terms of rigidity. Mid-corner bumps will upset it much more than the later R33, R34. This is why people feel it is more "wild" than the others. For serious racing it's not a good thing. There are a lot of chassis rigidity modifications offered by Nismo and other companies to try and resolve these issues.

It isn't. I'm just listing all of the flaws and issues I can think of in the R32 because casuals think you can abuse these cars and that they're the fastest thing in the world and that some minor mods will give you 600 horsepower.

None of those things are true and anyone seriously prepared to get one should still want one despite knowing its foibles. Plenty of people know about all of these things but love the R32 anyways because it has a distinctly raw feel.

I can say right away even with the stock airbox you can really hear the turbos spooling and there is a lot less noise insulation than modern cars. It pulls, but it's not really terrifying at stock power levels.

There's really a sense of nostalgia when getting into one. Modern cars are just very distracting. Even now I don't like iDrive, it feels like I'm navigating the settings menu of Ubuntu or something when a car should just be about driving instead of constantly fucking with things.

Same issues without any real tuning potential beyond MAYBE 300whp, which is not all that bad, but without 450+ you really do feel the weight, its a great cruiser NA or TT, and with the right mods it punches way, way above its weight class, engine bay however is still cramped and tough to work on, there are a few common deletes that are popular in the z32 community that makes it a lot simpler

>NA Z32
>with the right mods it punches way, way above its weight class
like an LS swap?
Because it's a stupid and expensive errand to try and get power out of the that engine NA. Basically if you want any kind of "above its weight class" power it is MANDATORY that you turbocharge or swap it, because getting 350whp let alone the 500+ it takes to make the car really fast is a monumentally expensive thing to do with a VG30DE which is positively anemic with less than 250bhp stock
>>
>>16381146
Your list of "flaws" is no longer than you can make for any car. Many of these are not an issue until you're tuning the car beyond what its designers ever intended.

I appreciate the honest answers though. At least you're actually interested in owning one and not shitting on it blindly.
>>

That's definitely true. If you look closely at anything you're going to notice flaws.

I would definitely be careful regarding rust though. It is a major issue on all Skyline GT-Rs. In Japan they do not spray salt at all so these cars were not designed with that in mind. They will not do well in areas that spray any kind of corrosive salt in the winter, especially if it's MgCl which is extremely corrosive.

It's only recently that GM has started using FNC to keep rust at bay on cars like the Volt and ATS after guns have been treated with FNC for decades to keep the steel parts from rusting.

Overall the Skyline GT-R is really just marred, if anything, by its reputation. Too many people that don't really know what they're doing abusing these cars until they run out of money and sell it to the next person that doesn't know what they're doing.

injectors, tuning and a couple of other minor mods like boost controller gets you up to the 500 bhp

Do you fags who keep parroting this work on cars at all or just pretend to? It's really not that bad if you have a standard set of tools and are even halfway decent at wrenching. Everyone I know in person who owns one (myself included) does their own work on their engine and has no problems with it. Literally the only place Ive heard this complaint is on /o/, and I've seen it posted so many times that I doubt that it's more likely that each and every one of you has worked on a 300zx and not that you guys heard someone say this and decided to spread it around because you had nothing better to do.
