For the guy who wanted an explanation on why twin turbo Liberty/Legacies are a bad idea:

Everything is non standard - and don't mistake what I'm saying, every single fucking thing is non standard.
Even the fucking tower positions are non standard - and to boot only STI made strut braces for it, and only issued them for the minute number of STI B4 RSKs that were delivered in Japan.
The Turbos are individually different by year, and a replacement turbo has to be exact because on 98 the engine will knock like you won't believe if you're using a non-standard set up.
Replacement Turbos, fitted with the right flange, have not been manufactured for over ten years - call up Subaru, they'll quote you $5k for one that's been sitting on a shelf for a decade.
Even the water hoses are non-standard and to get one that wouldn't kink or rub on the engine shroud cost me nearly $150 shipped from Japan.

And going back to being temperamental, nine times out of ten, a retune won't garner any more power, or fuel efficiency, it will just burn a hole in your wallet and detonate your engine.

Sure the 9:1 compression and 1 Bar of boost makes for a great car in the bottom and top end, but the fucking hassles of a snowflake car are not worth it.

Just buy a GT, it will cause you a lot less pain in the long term.

generally, you need heaps of money. with an n/a 20v v70 you're better off selling it for parts, repairing the engine isn't worth it. sell interior bits, gearbox and whatever else people will buy, then buy a 940, an n/a wagon isn't hard to find for cheap and it's perfect for a swap.

You should get a b5234t (2.3 high pressure turbo R engine) from any 850 t5, t5-r or r. It also came in v70s and '99 is the last year before the shit electronic throttles iirc.

imo you should buy one of those motors from a scrapper, rebuild it with upgraded parts (h-rods etc) then you'll have a great motor.
If you won't modify it much then get the motor from a v70 pre-ecm, the motronic 4.4 ecu can be tuned with a computer, the right cable and freeware off some volvo forum.

You could always try fitting one of the 4cyl motors from a v40 t4, still capable of great power but more compact/more space in the engine bay. Also it'd be a first so no help from forums there.

Considering the body shell will need to stripped down to nothing, floorpan extensively modified, custom fabricated/wired and adapted everything. You're basically building a kit car from scratch with the constraints of an existing shell,and then having it engineered and complied as a modified exciting car.
To give you a point of reference, a custom dual cab chop on a 4x4 SUV engineered and complied costs around 12k. And that's with a non structural body on a ladder bar frame with a conversion path that's been trodden a lot. I doubt you'd be able to achieve a road worthy LS V8 powered V70 for any less than 50-70k. 12k may buy MOST of the mechanical componentry that'll sit around indefinitely.
