Real talk.

Is it just not possible to have a decent factory sound system in an economy line vehicle? Sure, some mercedes and infiniti's have great factory stereos but we're talking about a 50k+ car. I've not heard great things about Toyota's Entune, which is JBL speakers.
>>
>>16358091
No clue. My Corolla's a 98 and at least secondhand. We replaced the stereo but I have no idea whether the speakers are stock or not - I suppose one can replace the entire plastic interior door covering so there'd be no way to tell unless you opened it up.
>>
>>16358091
All factory stereos are garbage, plain and simple. Even half a million dollar Ferrari's can have a better sound system for less than $5000 in aftermarket components. Your average consumer is completely content with having the "premium audio" package.
>>
>>16358091
It'd be possible, good audio quality doesn't have to cost much. I'm pretty sure in most cases they're decent but since they're stock, owners think that it's bad anyways.

Just a friendly reminder that audio tech is a ton of snake oil to begin with.

I was looking at Sound Deadener Showdown as that's the best there is (as of a scientifically relevant comparison), but shipping such heavy and bulky items across the pond gets expensive really fast.

Not sure if dynamat is global but it works wonders of you can get your hands on it. Used it in our 77 firebird and it's actually really nice.

I forgot the name of it, but you should be able to find it if you google hard enough. There's some shit you can buy at hardware stores or off Amazon that apparently works just as well as dynamat. Look for "cheap dynamat alternatives" or something like that. It adds up in weight though.

>Paseo
>Hidden gem

Having owned one boy howdee are you wrong.

1.) The rear disc brake swap for the paseo is an utter pain in the ass an most parts are NLA
2.) Suspension options are NLA or chinesium
3.) It literally has a steel beam as the rear axle
4.) The distributor system is horrendous and likes to shit itself and not tell the ECU the correct RPM of the motor so your injectors lean out and you ruin the block
5.) It's slow, really slow. Even though the car sits at a 2000lb curb weight it still takes 10 seconds to reach 0-60
6.) The 4EFTE swap makes the car slightly less slow but still slow and costs a prohibitive amount of money to source and swap.
7.) Stock motor cannot handle boost at all
8.) Fabbing up custom mounts to fit whatever stupid engine you want to put into it is a ton of work for a chassis that really isn't all that solid. Not to mention there's very little room to work with as it is
9.) Parts are fairly expensive because most are NLA at this point so on a lot of things you're going $$$ or sketchy and used. You don't see a ton of Paseos at a junkyard and there were quite a few differences between Tercels and Paseos between the years so a lot of stuff isn't interchangeable
10.) Extremely rust prone making an already flimsy chassis more flimsy.

Picture is what you want if you want beater-tier light weight FWD performance. Far better aftermarket, far better chassis, far better suspension.

But please go buy one and prove me wrong it's not like I literally owned one for years.
>>

It would appear that winter has killed my AFM and is slowly killing my starter along with it. it's that or a boost leak, but this is the only thing I could find to indicate as such.
The car is fine on the freeway, but pretty much can't idle or slow down. Any ideas?

Any mr2 owners here?
I might buy a cheap 1-2k sw20 and build it up to be a dd.
I know engines can be had for cheap, I know the tube from hell is cheap but obnoxious fix. I know timing belts. I know rust.

Is there anything else that is a money pit?

I just want an mr2 since there's a free racetrack right next to my parents house.
>>
>>16369997
getting a 1-2k sw20 means you're getting an NA chassis. Yes the turbo engine (3rd gen 3SGTE is the best) can be had for a grand, BUT you should get the turbo tranny, brakes, calipers, axles, exhaust, intercooler stuff etc etc so expect to spend 3-5k actually swapping. The car itself isn't a more of money pit than any other project so things should be normal . After considering the condition, price to buy parts and swapping, it's probably a better idea to buy the stock turbo car and save yourself time, money, and headaches
>>
>>16370011
Thanks.
I was considering getting an NA one since it's a good starter platform to learn the quirks of the car before slapping the massive turbo on it.

I won't mind having to waste 5k on upgrading the car, as it is my dream car. Don't see myself selling it as long as there's a racetrack nearby.

Thanks for bringing out the extra costs, I didn't consider brakes axles or trannys.
I thought the stock tranny could handle the power.

you definitely could use the stock tranny but it won't last long.
I do recommend getting an NA as a starter platform if you don't mind spending and swapping, it's what I did when I was 16. I've gotten good enough to where I can hold a drift in my sw20 and lemme tell ya, it is the most rewarding car I've ever driven (and I've had lots and lots of time with WRXs and Miatas).

Best experience ever.

Some people were recommending me old Corollas or Celicas, but I wouldn't mind /tg/'s opinion.

Spend $7k on a neat petrol FZJ80 Landcruiser, and use the remaining 13k in fuel bills... Or wait for the right factory turbo diesel HDJ80 to pop up (they seldom go on the market, and are snapped up quickly when they do), boost the heck out of it, and still save on fuel bills.

engaging 4Hi is cool as long as there is some road slippage right? Like, if I get a bit of light snow and my tires are spinning, then I can do engage the 4x4 without fucking up the tranny? Hey peeps.
Poorfag here (student and all) who finally found an affordable used car to buy from a guy I trust and see on at least a weekly basis.
It's a '93 Camry, and he's mostly selling because his family all pitched in and got him a new one.
This'll be my first actual car I own, despite having had my license for a good long while.
Any advice?
>>
>>16396603
The fug happened to your bumper M8.
>>
>>16398183
Check all over for rust, it's an epidemic on older Toyota's.
What's the mileage on it? Is it standard or automatic?
>>
>>16398183
Keep a little note book for maintenance. It's surprisingly easy to fall behind on. Also, this way, when you sell it you can show that you've been doing oil changes and stuff. Better than just your word.
>>
>>16398205
Mileage is...I'm not from the US, but it's 165 000 Km, give or take, stick but I can drive that easier than I can automatic, believe it or not.
Haven't seen any rust on it just yet.

>>16398211
Thanks! That's some pretty solid advice!
>>
>>16398216
Ok, that's good as I'm not from the US either.
165k kms is really good for something of that age, I'd say you're making a good decision.
Check the oil cap next time you see it. If the underside has frothy stuff all over it, the head-gasket's blown, and you should move on.

they're fine.
Snap oversteer isn't a problem and it's more easily controllable since there's consistently less grip.
Don't own mr2 but my first drive was an sw20 in the snow. Within 1 minute I managed to doriftu around the parking lot like a champ.
Overall it's easily dailiable. Provided you get real winter tyres

You can call me fegit if you want, but I feel the need to waste my money and time and effort on a JDM drift machine.

The MR2 looks cool and I like toyota, which would be better, a 5k$ Mk2 turbo, or a 4k$ MR2-S?

Something else? Pretty much just want to look cool while going fast, I'm not a stranger to stupid projects and wrenching either.

Just by searching the first page of Google "mr2 mk2 drift," it says people struggle with the mid ship engine and drifting, is that a thing?

Can it go to 50:50?
>>
>>16412811
Yes that's a thing. It takes more skill to drift mr than fr. The smaller the wheel base the harder to control too.
>>
>>16412808
What about the celica engine?
>>
>>16412811
Yes, drifting a midship car is much harder, the rearward-weight bias makes the car want to swing like a pendulum.
>>
>>16412831
>>16412859
Probably not good to start with. Will a cage and bar help enough to not kill me?

All miatas aside, how 2 go fast and drift?
>>
>>16412876
Yes but it has to be like today's racer cars' cage. You need a lot of power and a lot skill to drift fast. Btw you can make the mr2 50/50 with a weight ballast in the front but you're going to have to compensate with power for the added weight.
>>
>>16412838
They're both 3SGTE
>>
>>16412902
So say in theory, I had a 91 mr2 Turbo with the 3sge engine ready to cop, I'd need practice + cage + ballast and I'd have a ready to go drift-mobile?

Is there anything from the 00's that will get sideways? I unironically like the mk3 mr2, can they be done up to drift?
>>
>>16412921
It (((should))) be fine then
>>
>>16412926
I recommend to add cheap skinny tires or bald tires to make it easier to drift.

mk3 can be drifted, it'll need more power for easier skids though.

Make sure your rear diff isn't worn out too.
>>

>>16412926
I like and will be getting zzw30 soon.
SW20 is really nice, not that hard to drift in snow. I got my first drive with it in snow and after a while of the car driving me around I started to learn a bit of control.
aw11's, sw20's show up on ice track races often tho.
No idea how it is out of snow tho. But if you don't wanna drift, MR2 series is fantastic fun everywhere else, especially in the corners.

Need some insight here. My Cressida recently developed a misfire. However, it only happens when fully warmed up to operating temp. Happens across all rpm once it starts. Anyone have any advice on what the fuck I can do.

I have a Celica and I cannot get the engine to stop vibrating. I've installed two different sets of motor mounts and they do nothing. I bought my first set, installed, engine still vibrates, returned those, grabbed a new set, and it still vibrates. I've had countless friends who work with cars tell me I'm not going crazy, the motor mounts are clearly broken. I seriously have no idea what to do. The car still vibrates, granted not as bad as when the broken mounts were in, but the vibrations are still there.

No lights come on and all those are functioning normally. And trans mounts are still in good shape.
>>16424366
>What did you use for mounts?
At first I went with aftermarkets, Westar motor mounts. I was told they do a good job and won't break the bank. Well, they hardly did anything. So, I returned those and decided to just take it up the ass and get OEM directly from Toyota. A friend of mine works at a Toyota dealership as a mechanic so I was able to get a decent deal. However, the vibration still exists.

I actually just got back from the Toyota dealership my friend works at, one of the older mechanics has told me that when the motor mounts are changed in last generation Celicas, they will always have vibrations. He told me it's almost impossible to get rid of. I really hope he's full of shit but at this point I'm believing him. Nothing else is wrong with my car. Tranny is fine, hoses are fine, engine is fine, everything is working as intended.

Even in a bit of a rougher state I am envious of your Chaser since burgerland never got em. I do really like that blue though.

The smaller size doesn't look as good but the ride feels much better. The old ones had life in them but were old as fuck and had too much cracking and sidewall was deteriorating, I just didn't trust them for long distances.

the places that put them on only charged me 67$ to mount and balance them which was pretty cool.

>>16431040
Yea older ones did look better. That's reasonable to get rid of cracked tires.
That's a pretty good deal.

Can a 3SGTE fit in a 7th Gen (91-98) Corolla? Won't get much money selling it so might as well plan on having some fun with it for a second car.

You buy a car for the car. Most normalfags don't care about audio. Even if you get a the "premium" JBL speakers, they'll at least be passable. My dad has the ETune JBL speaker system in his 4RUNNER and it's still a bit muddy in my opinion.

If you want a symphony in your car, install your own aftermarket speakers to bring out the detail and a 10" subwoofer in the back for deep, clear bass that a compact stock subwoofer simply can't deliver. You don't exactly need nigger bass (completely useless if you can't even hear the rest of the music). You want a balanced, uniform sound that blends well with the rest of the system. You don't exactly need to spend a lot of money for good sound. Car audio manufacturers know there's a lot of dumb fucks, delinquents looking for a ghetto blaster and audiofools alike, who they can Jew money from, so don't get ripped off. Know what you need and what you don't. Don't expect Wal-Mart trash to sound good, but you don't necessarily need the finest Focal or Morel speakers, but do what you want with your money.

To give you an idea, here's what I have in my '06 Camry (as good if not better than the premium stereos in most modern vehicles):
>JBL STAGE speakers (impressive clarity for $50 a pair, bass is lacking but I have a sub)
>250W KEF PSW2150 10" home theater sub running off of an inverter from Wal-Mart (I have the sub volume knob at ~65%)

4Runner fag here. How hard would it be to replace a power steering pump by myself? It's a '95 w/ a 3.0L V6
>>
>>16428337

1G-GE? If it is, then it probably is shit.
>>
>>16366412

Major shit that can go wrong is leaking power steering that takes out the alternator because of how the fucking pump is mounted, and the starter. RockAuto can take care of most of your parts if anything needs replacing.
>>
>>16434685
Personally I imagine that the Volvo is just a simpler vehicle with less to go wrong, but I could be incorrect. It's probably just a matter of which one was maintained better. Although the 7mge will likely need a headgasket eventually unless it's already been done.

Looks doable solo. Tensioning the drive belt and removing the pulley will prob be the hardest part. Label and plug the hoses, and probably hit the bolts and nuts with nut buster they day before, depending on the rust level you have. You'll also have to bleed the system post installation.

Also yeah buddy I also have a 95 3.0 4runner.

Too much money for what you're getting. Look into buying a ct20b, also ATS Racing makes an upgraded ct26 for a good price. Search up ATS CT27.

Entertaining the idea of buying a 2nd gen Lexus GS300. Pros and cons?
I know the ball joints explode, lock actuators die, and a radio won't work. Anything else to look out for? Work at a small Toyota dealership in the Midwest, and we don't see many 2JZ cars, let alone the Lexus brand.
