License plates aren't as nice as they used to be?

Man, some states changed their plate every year. Was this some form of annual registration? Was a hunk of metal cheaper than a sticker?
Did they not have technology to make stickers withstand weather conditions?
Oddly nostalgic to see my state's old style plate
Another nice reminder that Wisconsin has the most boring plates.
Why did they switch plates so often back then?

Im keeping my current NJ plate as long as possible. Its the last one with the actual raised lettering in the plate, the new ones look like pieces of paper.

God I member the butthurt over that one. You had to get a specially approved circular yellow sticker to cover up the smiley face on the sun and turn it into a normal damn sun.
