First time I've driven in snow in like 3 years.
Fucking loved it.
I did have a bit of bad luck when the snow wasn't deep but it hid the soft dirt underneath.

Just replaced all 4 tires with a set of General Tires Grabbers. What's your opinion on them /o/, did I make a mistake.

I needed something quick too.
Got a flat about 2 miles from the shop, had to walk there and see if they could sell me a tire iron. They couldn't but one of the guys was nice enough to lend me one.
And I didn't trust the spare at all, so I wanted to get off it as quick as possible.

Why do so many lifted trucks in my area have small wheels and a huge lift? Don't you need bigger wheels to raise the diff higher off the ground? And why do a lot of lifted trucks have such thin tread?

Boyracer here, dont offroad btw
>>
>>16349631
Because low profile mud tires stretched out on wide nigger rims with ridiculous offset is the latest brotruck fad, thus having to lift the truck higher to have enough clearance to turn with 22x14 wheels causing the big lift little tires syndrome

Though most brotrucks do run tires that are by no means small, most commonly 35" to 38" tall tires. But a 12.50" wide tire stretched out on a 14" wide wheel looks much smaller than one mounted on a 10" wide wheel

After reviewing the laws regarding diesel swaps, We're starting to lean more towards putting the 6.5 in my Suburban.

We can put it in the 1500, but we'd have to pick up the emissions equipment from the 96 1500 and go through some shit with the DMV to get the title changed.

The 2500 is safety only so I wouldn't need to worry about emissions equipment or changing the title.

Why don't you just get a 2010 model or something and save yourself the dime? Also look into the Tay Yodas I told you about.

Also keep in mind you can daily a Jeep TJ. Spend the $7000 on one, put aside $10 000 on builds (bumper, lifts, wheels, etc), and put aside $5 000 for gas. I can almost guarantee you you will have much more fun that the Rubicon.
Plus it will retain its value and only go up from here. Same with rustless old Yotas.

I like the rear, tube bumper guard. that man knows his priorities and how much an '85 bumper would cost him if he rams into a snow bank that's a bit too compressed... Like a certain unnamed anon's Colorado a few years back...

If you dream of it and have spent this much time on it, why don't you just go to the Jewish Jew and take out a loan on it that will be paid off once you get ride of your current ride?

Fuck a Jeep, Get this thing. All the rustless Samarais here are like 20% more expensive than the TJ counterparts. I would even be able to tow this thing on a trailer in my Ferd Ranger without issue. That'd be gorgeous.

I would buy this almost instantly if I lived in San Diego. If anything, you could easily flip this for at least $6000 if you waited and had somewhere to store it.

i may end up buying a toy yoda. Really i want a good car that i can take onto my property that i hunt on that is always insanely muddy. if it can tow a 4wheeler that would be a plus. I may end up just getting a truck. also i've been looking at like a 2016 370z.

Hey /ORG/,

I need some guidance. Dealership is offering me a 2016 TRD off-road AC/LB for 80CAD more than what I currently pay for my 2015 RAV4. I'm very tempted to take it, but I'm concerned about the access cab vs getting a double cab.

Thoughts and suggestions? Pic related.
>>
>>16352221
dual cab short bed, you're welcome.
>>
>>16352228
I'm getting a deal on the AC/LB, but I want to try if I can get the same deal with DC/SB. Also, DC/SB is not yet available here in Alberta until 2017. I would have to go with TRD sport if I want DC.
>>
>>16352221
How often do you need to whore out your truccfu to more than 1 person? If not very often, then get the ext. cab for closer axle spread.

The 2016 taco has a computer analysis of your vehicle's offroad conditions and 3 differential locking options (I think?). Very nicely built for the overlander in thoughts. The Rav4 has none of that. On /ORG/, it's a no brainer to get the taco.
>>
>>16352238
The bed is a joke on 1/4 tons anyway. Just get the short bed and accept the status as a lunchbox holder. You'll want the four doors. DC/LB = shit breakover angle.

I prefer the TRD off-road to TRD sport since I need to drive up to Fort McMurray every now and then and the locker will be helpful in that regards.

How is Fort McMurray nowadays? Bretty much the same despite the fire destroying like 5% of the city?
I guess they just rebuilt the cookie cutter houses in due time before the winter and insurance takes that up with the people, eh?

One thing I loved seeing about the highways out of the city were that every 4th car on the road was a pickup and every 4th pickup had a trailer that was able to tow a bunch of shit so they could leave with the most valuable possessions. Also the fact that only one person died in that city (that I recalled).

I was told by some other engineering friends that it is recovering. I work for Shell in Downtown Calgary, so I only fly to Albian whenever I need to do stuff there.

I would say that the fire helped the city "level" a bit, if that makes sense. Still, real estate and other properties will shoot up in value again since oil is climbing back up.

It's also interesting because it's a real-life representation of what safety-trained people would do in a hypothetical scenario - an H&S advisor would be proud.

That's actually what I heard from most of my upper management friends and rig welders. Some guy on /pol/ a while back said something like "you can't have a major city evacuation without some mongo driving into the lake or causing a huge pileup and killing like 5 people". Good for Fort. MM for being a great town.

As a side note. Is oil only set to rise? I have like 2 drums at work that are just sitting there so I might load them up into muh trucc and fill up all 400L when the oil price is back down to 90.something.

That can save me enough to buy that dragon dildo that GreenGroin wants so bad.
>>
>>16352866
It's amazing to see how much the millions of dollars spent on H&S training has paid off outside a work-site. In addition, the oil companies really stepped up and I am really impressed by them.

Hard to forecast the price of oil, Taytay-anon, since there are multitude of things that depends heavily on it (company shares for instance). Although it is steadily climbing and with Line-3 and Transmountain coming to fruition, plus with Trump presidency, 2017 will be a very interesting year for the energy sector.

Regarding the energy companies - yeah. We have a better mandate and regulations than our American counterparts and have a lot of restrictions on the environment due to lack of lobbying potential that exists here (relatively). At least it pays off for the small towns, if anything else
>inb4 anclap screeching "gubmnt"

Politics aside, it's just a nice situation when it could've gone horribly worse had some BC town burned down instead.
Regarding the oil price ... so I shouldn't keep 400 litres of petrol in my warehouse. Gotcha.

Night anon. It's bordering on 3am in Eastern Canuckistan. Let us know how you decide with the Tacco. They're really bumped up suspensions since the earlier 2nd gens. I've been asking him to drive to Canada for the past 3 threads because I'm also in the market for a Jeep.

Since I'm here, I might as whale ask:
Is it worth getting a $1500 TJs from the later 90s with an I4 at 300 000 on the odometer? I've been holding off for a good I-6 to come along that hasn't been used as a plow.
I mean, I might be able to find an old Merc I6 for and have the swap done for under $5000 then maybe a transmission rebuild for under $2h00 on one of those old AMCs. $10 000 after the bank and I'd have a completely rebuilt TJ for under $15000 and has just exponentially increased the resale value, eh?

Samarais are pretty darm rare up here, too so I wish >>16352165 would come along already.

I could take it to a mechanic but i'd rather do it myself. I was interning at an auto shop and they just hired me for part time, all of them are super great guys but I probably couldn't do it at the shop because one lift is all ready taken up by the managers 60's nova wagon that's getting a new rear axle, and a ls7 swap with a knew front clip set up. Then he's probably gonna take it all apart again the paint it. Possibly when i'm not in school this summer because i'll work there 4-5 days a week. And even then if I do a solid front axle swap, why not just do 1tons hahaha.

I'm not necessarily all about offroading but with a recent move I'm in a position where I'm going to drive on icy roads for most of the winter (plows don't get this far so we all rely on each other to have our own plows, or just drive 4x4).

So, I need to break into the 4x4 club, but I don't want to just buy a used xj and call it a day. I lived in a desert for a while and the coolest car I remember was a Suzuki samurai, but swapped with a rotary engine, not sure which one (12a/13b).

Exactly how hard would it be to replicate that project? I could cop a zuki with a blown engine for 1k, to start with. Has anyone we've run into a guide? There's a few build threads I've found, but not much.

I might just start with the blown zuki and drop in a new engine, and try the rotary later. What does /org/ think? Too complicated?

Problem is most of them require tow hooks to be removed, and I actually use mine. Are any of these strong enough to be used as a tow/recovery point? I know a full replacement bumper is the way to go but I can really afford one right now. Whatever I get is going on pic related so It's gotta be something made for 20 year old trucks.

i havent heard of that but it could be a thing in the suzuki world if youre saying it is. admittedly idont know a whole lot about samurais

if it were me, id buy the most decent one i could afford, wait for the original engine to blow and then do whatever swap you like.

if you need 4x4 now like you say, taking on a massive swap project probably isnt the best idea.

I'm toying with the idea of mounting a convex mirror off of my brush guard like busses and trucks. Not like the truck isn't already over the top...

There isn't much of a selection for GMT400 platform trucks out there surprisingly. Believe me I've looked into it too. There is a company that keeps coming up in my research but they changed their name 5 or 6 times and have a shit ton of complaints associated with them. Can't remember any of their names atm. It was by Atlanta though.

$1200-1400ish from what I've seen.

Not the cheapest option but far from the most expensive. Pretty good deal considering they're the best overall bumper for these trucks. Winch mount, recovery points, high lift jack point, full coverage, plenty strong, and good approach angle.

Too bad ARB doesn't make rear bumpers. I've accepted the fact I'll need to custom fab my own rear bumper with swing out tire carrier and Jerry can mount.

I've got a 6.5 under the hood. There's a control module that is known to overheat mounted up there. Also 6.5 trucks have 2 holes cut into the OEM bumpers for additional cooling. Not sure if those are necessary though.

Either way I'd cut holes in it to mount my PA speakers, and future fog lights. Hell... If I have to fab up a rear I might as well make a front one too...

I just rammed my solid steel winch bumper into a tree and it has bent inwards bending into my front quarterpanel.
My left wheel (when slightly turning) now rubs against the corner of the metal bumper. That cannot be good for the rubber or the paint.

How can I fix this outside of a hydraulic press, jaws of life, or visiting a costly body store.

2010 Ferd Ranger. Ya'll may know me as I've posted here.

I'll level with /org/ though since I love everyone here (yes everyone). I said it was a rock as I really don't want to relive this situation spending 2 hours waiting for testimony and police and tow trucc drivers and whatever. I was side swiped by a 2001 Mazda Protege going around 50. His vehicle had the front absolutely destroyed into the frame and caved in like mad. I have pic related destruction on my side which almost looks completely superficial other than the impact of the bumper. I'll get it looked at by the body shoppe in the new year and see how bad the frame (if at all) is damaged.

I had literally gotten this bumper custom made for the winch and leveled with my fog lights yesterday. Pic has my original bumper and I think that this thing saved my vehicle. If I had the original plastic / aluminium bumper, it probably would've ramed right into the frame which could've absorbed a lot more damage from the Mazda.

I'm posting another picc with available options for repair as this is aftermarket and my insurance doesn't like that shit.
>>
>>16368337
that sucks dude, happens to the best of us. is that side of the bumper pushed it, or was the whole bumper shifted to the left\right via bending the frame or something like that.

I hope the frame ain't too cucc'd.

>>16368337
So it's moved up a bit and a decent far back into the wheel well. I say it's at least 10degrees pushed in. Though, seeing the damage the Protege endured (literally fucking rekt'd m9), I should count myself lucky if the frame is completely intact.

-I could put the original bumper on and ask insurance to deal with that (and then even write off the price of a new bumper that way).
-I could just eat the price of the bumper and take it back to my fabricator/mechanic who will be able to bend it back into shape given enough time - but he lives far.
What else is there to do?

Yupp. Except he was more on a 30degree angle which made his rear blow right into my rear bumper afterwards. His entire trunk flew open and I have literally no damage to my rear.
On the front, it hit right into the bumper. There's around 2cm (one inch) of space between the wheel's land and the edge of the bumper.

Maybe I could run over my stock bumper, get it quoted for a repair at my fabricator, and just have him work this out. The bumper also probably saved my wheels and suspension. God damn it. Another year or two of IFS it is.
>>
>>16368398
>>16368337
Also worth it to note that the bumper normally comes out 3-4 cm from the wheel well flares so that you can clear areas without worrying about fender rubs. The tyre now is overtaking the bumper by 2cm. It's kinda clearer on this image:

Back mounted winches are normally a much better idea.
I think too many applicators think that you will be going with at least another vehicle with a winch and don't even bother.

However, if the only way to be pulled out is from the back (ie if you run yourself into a snowditch), how do you pull yourself out when you only have a front?
>>
>>16374882
A snatch block. Everytime I've needed a winch it wouldn't have made any sense to have it on the back. They are normally used if you can't quite make it up a climb. If you're out in the snow and go into a ditch you'll probably need another truck to pull you out either way.

XJ is more flexible with eaiser upgrades. They're also dirt cheap. However, they suffer with gas mileage compared to the Ranger. Ranger is easy to upgrade to 30s - I run 32s with some wheel rub but it gives me the extra 2inch of lift I need to run my buddies' trails/ cottage non-roads. Undercarriage armour really fucking helps too. However, my fab/mec quoted me $2000 to get an IFS adaptation since the front differential and transfers only need some small parts to get shopped. Then labour, ofc. The IFS may be annoying to deal with when doing more technical trails but at least they're not air. Which brings me to this point:

And not a dinky shovel - I mean those WWII foxhole makers with the serated side end to dig into hard dirt ice and difficult other shit. Pull yourself forward as much as you can but not down, reverse back into the ditch and cut down 4 or 6 one inch trees along with traction aid to slam into the front tyres. Move them back and forth with locks.
Alternatively, you could use tyre chains when you have 1ft spacing by dragging yourself either with the winch or shovel. But if you have those, chances are that you won't need to get unstuck in general.

Whoops. I forgot to talk about IFS climbing hills. It's really not bad at all until you get to a rock that pertrudes 5 inches from the hill.
Then you had better try to renavigate. And if not possible, reversing up the hill could even work. I've personally never tried it since we don't fucking have driveable large rocky hills in Northern Ontario due to the huge slab of Granite we call the Canadian Shield.

I wonder what the tacofag does with his IFS.

It's not ideal, but I make it work. Luckily for me I don't come across any giant outcroppings when I climb, and the Taco is just tall enough to get over most terrain. The biggest deal with IFS is to be smart with the line you take, and to think before trying to bomb up a hill.

My toughest off-roading is in the soft sand with whoops and razorback dunes, where IFS is actually ideal since it's more akin to prerunning.

Nah. It's easily triggered faggots like you that don't belong. If you want to talk like a fucking five years old child, and be nice to everyone retards included, go make an off road Tumblr. We don't need you cancerous faggots making pussies think it's okay to infest this place with faggot. You're a god damn grown man, stop typing like a retarded child.

Prebby much, then. I suppose you have the deserts to play in where the IS really shines. We have one sand dune in all of the province where you see buggies doing jumps all the time since they build up their back suspensions to give it a kick and get more air. Real fucking Neato.

As I constantly say: it's about where you know you can go. Learning to offroad with a 2WD weakly powered Colorado really taught me well.
I remember ramming full on into icefields, getting stuck, and sleeping there for 4 hrs before someone came to pull me out. Good times.

Since you're in Cali, I suppose larger tyres and the winch isn't in order since you don't need it,heh?
Did you check out my newly attached winch bumper and newly wrecked winch bumper a few comments up? );

Yep, knowing your limits and driving accordingly is key.

I'd like to get a low-profile bumper with a winch, actually. The desert doesn't have too much to hold on to, but there's plenty of other areas in SoCal where it may come in handy, especially since I'm 2wd. As for tires, it's less about the size and more about tread; it's more important to find tires that don't sink into the sand than big tires that mow over everything

No one doubted you being gay. I am too. But you thinking it's okay to act like a faggot is the biggest part the problem. And you even think part of being gay is taking like a child. It's not, that's creepy fucking pedophile behavior.

Low profile winch would be nice. But you'd be digging into the engine bay would take up room for other things like batteries and all.

Where would you even use a winch, btw?
>>16376444

No but really. I hope I get knowledgeable in the new year that you'll mind me enough. You've done nothing to me so I've no reason to be mad.

Hope you have a good Christmas anon.
>>
>>16376734
Most LP bumpers don't take any space in the engine bay for my truck, they're just bolt-on or weld-on using the stock mounting bracket, so no worries there.

As for the winch, I go out to the mountains as well as the desert, so a winch could hold onto a sturdy tree or around a rock or something. In the desert, too, I can hold on to other trucks if I need to get pulled out of the sand without dealing with my retardedly-long tow straps

Do a bolt job so if you encounter my shitty situation with a mazcucc, you can just replace the bumper, hehe.

Nah but that's good. Tubes would mean less weight which means better balance. I'd do it! Get a shiny little silber bumper!

After exams ofc. (; Night tacofag. See you on the next threaBB. I'll keep on eye on the WAT store
