Really the right answer here. The LS400 is something very, very special to drive. Grab one while they're still cheap. The LS430 is also excellent, and both are so much better than the LS460 that followed it's not funny. Also, GS300/400/430 are excellent if you like the looks (not for everyone) and cheaper than the IS300 but much nicer to sit in.

If you can find one without rust, the W210 E320 with the straight six is good and not hard to work on. Honestly available for 3k in good shape, great to drive and a ton left for repairs. If you want a sportier car the W202 C230K is great, pretty reliable for a Mercedes and similarly cheap. Seriously watch for rust and trans issues on these two though, just walk away.
