For those of you out there who do change their own oil, how often do you change your oil?
How do you dispose of old oil?
>>
>>16341751
Every 5k in my car. 4k in my dad's truck. I take the used oil to advance and dump it in the back.
>>
>>16341804
Don't they tell you the tank is full?

no, really, about every ~5k miles on the daily driver and about ~500 miles on the race car. Oil samples sent in every time to keep an eye on things.
>>
every 3k for car and bike. I burn the used oil to heat my garage/shop
>>
>>16341816
never.
>>
>>16341832
How much do the samples cost to have analyzed? I want to start doing this when I buy my next car.
>>
>>16341751
Oil changes are a myth i kust add oil when the little red light on my dash starts to blink
>>
every 6 months(10k km) and i burn my oil in a waste oil furnace which heats my entire house. feels pretty good basically heating my house for free
>>
Every 4.5k with meme magic Penzoil High Mileage.
I dispose of it at work. I'm a "lube tech" at your friendly neighborhood jiffy lube.
>>
I dumped mine on my neighbor's cat as a prank

I think it died, havent seen it in a while
>>
>>16341885
What percent of the time do you actually change the oil for people?

every 10k km, full synthetic

have a spot beside my garage, in my back yard that I dug 2 feet down and filled with gravel like pic related.
>>
I just pour mine in my neighbors car whenever they leave their window open
>>

what is the idea here ?
seems like it would ruin the soil or ground water

I'm just a part timer so I don't work that often, mostly 5 hour shifts or sometimes 8 hours with a 45 unpaid lunch.
On average, on a 5 hour day, I work at best 2.5 hours.
On an 8 hour day, probably 5 out of the 8.

The rest of the time is spent fucking around, fixing our own cars, watching TV in the customer lounge, or if the District manager is in town holding the fucking sign.
>>
>>16341751
I usually change it every 5k miles nothing bad has happen to the engine and my local vatozone takes in my old oil for recycle
>>

probably
out of sight out of mind
>>

Mobil or redline, 5k or the computers interval, leave it behind oil shop at night.
>>
>>16341861
About $25. It's good peace of mind. Can tell you a lot from bearing wear to head gasket problems. All before it gets bad enough that the engine actually breaks.

every 6 months or 8k miles, whichever comes first. I dont do a lot of mileage on my car, so it only comes out to 6k or so miles between changes. I do check every couple of weeks to see if I'm losing oil.

Reports over time, like this one, are valuable to show if a bad trend is developing. That's why a sequence of reports, rather than a single standalone report, can reveal more info about what's going on.

I work in industrial maintenance and have found this to be very much the case
cleaning is something more a kin to dispersal and concealment of grime and failed parts rather than elimination of its cause or exsistance
>>
>>16341979
>>16342055
Theres bacteria in the soil that can eat oil.
Chlamydia is one of them. You can also add growth mediums or cultures to speed it up.
I doubt the EPA would care though.

>For those of you out there who do change their own oil, how often do you change your oil?

I change approx every 5000 miles with 5W20 full synthetic oil from quaker state.

>How do you dispose of old oil?
The thin wide plastic container that catches the oil is sealable. So I seal it up and squirt some soap on top. Then I take the hose with the same soapy car shampoo sprayer and quickly wash off the outside. It dries fast in open air. I then take it to any chain auto parts store that accepts used oil. I don't always get rid of the used oil the day I change it. I wait for a convenient time I can combine shopping trips or when I am passing by. No need to make a special trip just to get rid of oil. Call your local shop in advance to make sure their tank is not full. You don't want to waste a trip.

Of course, if your container is slightly leaky, then you have to make a special trip that day to get rid of the oil. Mine doesn't leak, so I can afford to wait for a convenient time.
>>
>>16341751
every 3.5k / 6 months because I don't use synthetic.
I dispose at autozone
>>
I change my oil every other year, regardless of how many miles I've driven, and then I dump the old oil in my neighbors yard, because that guy's just a dick

Pour it right back into the Supertech jug and take it to Walmart. The put a new foil seal on the top and sell it to the next guy.

Seriously tho, it's the one place in town that doesn't ask me to go pour it in the tank myself.
>>
>>16341751
I change my oil anywhere from 3k to 12k miles.

Let it drain into a pan which I pour into Arizona gallon tea jug. I don't feel like going to the oil drop off locations so I sneak down the road and chuck it into this nasty redneck's yard. Dude lives in a trailer surrounded by garbage and scrap metal. Asshole probably don't even realize he has 20-30 gallons of oil jugs launched in there

I do mine once a year, as I don't drive more than 12 000km per year

Dispose; put it in a plastic oil collection pan, go to local recycling facility and pour it into the oil-barrel there
>>
>>16342317
You are the biggest nigger in the world if you actually do this. It's not hard to dump off at the store.
>>
>>16343253
I didn't even know other places made you do that

I always took my used oil to walmart
>>
10k miles. Mobil 1 0w40. Take the used oil to the parts shop to recycle or to the recycling center.
>>
I change it every 4,500 to 6,000 miles. I put the oil in a container and give it to my father when he goes on the air force base to go shopping (he's retired), they have an auto hobby shop that takes oil for free.

I change my synthetic oil between 3500 and 4000 miles since I treat oil harshly due to lots of short trips interspersed with the occasional long drive. That means the oil gets somewhat diluted by gasoline which may account for why its level on the oil dipstick doesn't seem to ever get lower. Burnoff must be occurring, but the oil is probably absorbing petrochemicals from the blowback and thus maintaining its liquid volume.

The longest I went was about 5500 miles since I was too busy and kept putting it off due to work.

I don't believe in change intervals running to 10,000 miles, 15,000 miles, or even that outlandish 20,000 miles claim various brands have made over the years. It is my belief that increased wear rate occurs well before all of the additives and buffers are used up in the oil. That belief comes from empirical observation of other real life material interactions. It's better to be safe than sorry especially when the cost of the oil change isn't at all expensive for DIY.

>How do you dispose of old oil?
The used oil from the car lands in one of those cheap oil change plastic pans from Dollar Tree. No need to have something more expensive to catch the oil. I then pour that used oil into one of the empty 5 quart oil jugs I keep around for that purpose. I take that back to the store. My usa state requires stores that sell _large_ quantities of motor oil to also be able to take back used motor oil.
>>

My odometer doesn't work, so I do it every six months.

I put the old shit in a bucket and take it to autozone when it's full.
>>
My lesbaru vape sti - 2500ish miles.
My Vdub Vape Jetta - 15,000 miles. It's a lease. I don't give a fuck.

2002 wrx every 5k miles, but the engine ends up drinking about a quart and a half over that 5000mi period. Is the High mileage oil just a meme or does it help with 240k mile engines?

Also, I keep empty plastic kitty litter containers and just dump it in there and store it on the side of the house until I go to autozone or something and leave it there.
>>
Use Pennzoil Platinum Plus
Every 7500 miles
7 qt sump
Store it in old 5 gal gasolibe jugs
Take jugs to WalMart when full
>>
>>16341751
Every 5k miles.

I manage an engineering firm, so I take the waste oil there to dispose of it, shit is handy.
>>
Just my oil outside and the trash guy takes it. It's pretty good.

Shell Rotella T6 5W-40

I take it to local disposal station
