I've been thinking of upgrading cars, to something that's less of a shitbox than my current car.
I was looking into the Impala SS 94-6, and they all are either trashed or super expensive. Looking into later years of the model, they are all shitboxes by default. What's a similar, if not as nice car that's in the 3-5k range? Not seeing anything of interest in the sticky.

Only auto transmissions sadly.

same as the Impala SS

only rwd sedans in manual that are somewhat similar are BMW 540is afaik

Bruh. You're basically me. I was looking at Impalas myself but I found myself the same situation, either ridiculously expensive or beat to shit. I've been looking at other GM B bodies like the Caprice and Roadmaster. They're mechanically nearly identical to the Impala except for a few suspension bits. I personally love the look of the Roadmaster sedan and wagon. They're great sleepers.

So are the Impalas. You can fairly easily swap a manual from the LT1 Camaro and Corvettes though. Check out RCR's review of the Roadmaster.

Thanks for the advice.
The impala is auto but I love it enough to not care as much.

The 94-96 "Impala SS" was an APPEARANCE PACKAGE, not an actual model. Even on the titles, they's listed as Chevrolet Caprice's.
As to similar cars:
1978-1996 Chevrolet Caprice
1991-1996 Buick Roadmaster
1991-1996 Cadillac Fleetwood
1979-2011 Ford Crown Victoria
1979-2011 Lincoln Town Car
1979-2009 Mercury Grand Marquis
1978-1989 Chrysler Fifth Avenue
1978-1989 Dodge Diplomat
1978-1989 Plymouth Gran Fury

Get the police version, the 9C1 of the same year. Came with the same engine and some argue the Impala was the police package with cut springs.

The Caprice and Impala are large shitboxes. Look into a nice 2003 or newer P71 crown vic if you want a large car. Not quite as fast but they handle a lot better. Then mod the engine to be as fast.

and you could get that same drivetrain on a normal Caprice.
And even the smaller 4.3L V8 model ones aren't completely worthless. They have everything the bigger LT! cars got that made them great, but it's only 283 cubic inches. And if you stick the crankshaft from the 4.3L V8 in the 5.7L LT1, you end up with a modern version of the 4.9L 302 used in the 1967-1969 Chevy Camaro Z28 Trans Am race cars.
>>
>>16339231
also, the 5.0L 305 powered cars are pretty worthless. Go for the 4.3L or the 5.7L
>>
>>16339176
did you even read the Wikipedia article ??

it is significantly more than an appearance package.

>>16339198
not shitboxes, just land yachts
crown vic or mercury are much better choices, though. cheaper to buy and maintain, and more engine mods available
>>
>>16339176
and there are more modern interpretations of these cars if you want something better. Just as much attitude.
2005-present Chrysler 300C (2.7L V6, 3.5L V6, 3.6L V6, 5.7L V8, or 6.1L V8)
2005-present Dodge Charger (2.7L V6, 3.5L V6, 3.6L V6, 5.7L V8, 6.1L V8, 6.4L V8, or 6.2L S/C V8)
2005-2009 Dodge Magnum (2.7L V6, 3.5L V6, 5.7L V8, or 6.1L V8)
2008-2010 Pontiac G8 (3.6L V6, 6.0L V8, or 6.2L V8)
2011-2017 Chevrolet Caprice PPV (Police Patrol Vehicle. Only sold to police fleets, but you may be able to find a decommissioned one. Pic related btw. 3.6L V6 or 6.0L V8)
2014-2017 Chevrolet SS (6.2L V8 only)
2004-2013 Cadillac CTS (2.8L V6, 3.0L V6, 3.2L V6, 3.6L V6, 5.7L V8, 6.0L V8, or 6.2L S/C V8)

OP, look for the '94+ Roadmaster and Cadillac (Fleetwood?). They're both LT1s and anything short of a creampuff will be super cheap.
