that's a loaded question.
A 600cc Supersport is gonna be faster than a 1200cc cruiser, but then you also have things like 600cc standards which are still faster than cruisers but much slower than their 600cc supersport counterparts.
Same goes for literbikes.

If you wanna do mostly commuting with a bit of fun cornering and you are new to bikes, get a 600cc standard.

Popular choices include the almighty SV650, the FZ/MT-07, the CBF650, the ER-6N/F and the Kawasaki Ninja 650.

All around 70-75 bhp, 2 cylinders and plenty of torque.

I'm not gonna pretend I'm good enough of a rider to make choices about chassis being better than others but I really don't like how the MT-09 I rode handled and the set up of the ergonomics for fast riding etc.

The suspension was hilariously bad for the power the thing put out, it wallowed up and down like a waterbed and you're so high and upright on the thing.

Even with the jackhammer stock forks of the SV and less power I'd take it every time for a run through the twisties/track day.

Plenty of power for pulling away from stop lights when splitting without being stuck between the cagers, light and flicks around like nothing, great (70+mpg) gas mileage, smooth motor that doesn't rattle you to death, and a 6th gear for good acceleration gearing while still having a good top gear cruise.

When I say Standard I typically mean in terms of aesthetic and styling. Also it being utilitarian.

I'm sure some people recognize me by this point but my gold standard for Standards is the CB1300 and the VX800.

>>16330382
I just did a quick google and apparently they're revamping the CB1100 as the CB100 RS.
Whether or not it's coming to the States is still up for debate.

Why must every decently styled bike be dead in the water when it comes to the US
>>
>>16330318
Barely lighter than the DR-Z.
Less carrying capacity.
20% less peak power is a huge difference, and it's even more across the normal riding range.
Forks being upside down makes little to no difference. The difference is it makes the ride more harsh.
WR250R shock is way underdampened and tends to buck the rider off.
Sure fuel injection is nice.
WR is already geared lower than the DR-Z stock, and by a longshot as well. Both of these bikes are already limited in top speed by drag way more than revs, so "gearing for top speed" would entail lowering the gearing not raising it.
Stock DR-Z gets 70+mpg as well.
DR-Z has a larger aftermarket.
Ergos are a personal preference but my DR-Z is pretty comfy.

WR literally has an advantage by having a slightly lower first gear if you like to keep the revs up when chugging through small trails. I geared my DR-Z taller than stock and don't mind at all. The taller first gear is especially nice on pavement because I don't have to shift as soon as I take off.
>>
>>16330359
>debateable
Nope. Pic related.

>not saying much, still almost 300lbs
WR is like 30lbs lighter than the DRZ wet.

>steel and aluminum are both still in used for a variety of reasons, one is not better than the other
Aluminum frames are lighter and stiffer. Putting the chassis control into the suspension, not frame flex. There's a reason all modern offroad bike use twin spar aluminum frames.

>"modern suspension" is a buzzword means literally nothing
You're a complete retard if you actually believe this. You've just invalidated yourself and made it known you've never actually ridden a modern-suspension bike.

Go ride a dirt bike for 15 years ago then go ride a dirtbike from 5 years ago. Try to tell anyone there is no difference in suspension.

>almost all 4strokes are balanced
This is wrong. The DRZ has no balancer. It tries to shake itself apart at highway speeds.

>needs it due to lolnotorque
It needs a 6th gear for the same reason that the DRZ needs a 6th gear. Because gearing for a low enough first/second gear for offroad on the DRZ means you have a shit 5th gear for the highway. This is not an issue on the WR.
WR gearing is actually about the same as the DRZ 1st through 5th. It just ahs a 6th gear on top to make for tolerable highway speeds. The "WR" in WR250 actually stands for "wide ratio".

>[citation needed]
Lighter bike with far better suspension and frame. You do the math. Everyone who has ridden them and every review/comparison out there talks about how the WR handles better than the DRZ. The DRZ has pretty shit suspension out of the box.

>prove it
I've seen it. I've ridden both.

>ok?
Modern motor with fuel injection. Efficiency is a very valid metric for comparison.

>because the DRZ doesn't have twice the shit out for it?
"Twice" the amount of a shitload of aftermarket is meaningless. There is anything and everything you could ever want for a WR available aftermarket.

>entirely subjective
Denial.
>>
>>16330368
>it also looks a bit too Cafe Racer Wannabe for my tastes

It looks like the original Triumph Bonneville, which was also a standard. It is not, AT ALL, a "cafe" bike. The Triumph Thruxton is cafe'ed. Words mean things. Don't buy one if there are hipsters in your area though as they ruined them for everyone else.

Except for California there are very few hipsters. If you see one please park your car on their skull. The hipster imitates real men but is not one. The hipster affects the accouterments of real bikers without being one.

Cafefags who mutilate old junk into asstastic imitations of the classic British originals are the same as the chopperfags who build garbage instead of classic choppers.

Because Americans are rich enough to afford multiple specialty motorcycles, like a DRZ for touring, a DRZ for road racing, a DRZ for sidecar use, a DRZ for motocross, a DRZ for trials, and a DRZ for towing broken WRs and KTMs out of the woods.

Not when you have to use more of it to get the same durability.
>all modern offroad bikes use twin spar aluminum frames
Kek. The ones winning races use steel alloys.

Being "modern" doesn't make it better tho. The actual damping characteristics are the most critical part of suspension and the DR-Z fork and shock do that excellently.

DR-Z does have a balance shaft. No shit a larger piston will vibrate a little more than a tiny one.

Have you actually compared gearing of the 2? Stock geared DR-Z vs WR at 70mph: 6657rpm for the DR-Z in 5th or 7464rpm for the WR in 6th. The WR doesn't have "wide ratio" gears. It literally just has an extra gear because the only way to keep it going is to keep it in the top 2500 revs.

All the reviewers for the WR say its shock was way too harsh and the DR-Z did better even though it's forks aren't upside down.

>no proof of it being slower than dr-z
>proof readily available that the DR-Z is faster

Your WR a shit
>>
>>16330420
>Barely lighter than the DR-Z.
30lbs wet is not "barely lighter.

>Less carrying capacity.
Unless you're pillion riding with luggage this is meaningless (and doing this on a DRZ would be horrible too). The WR250 has ~600lbs load carrying. This is more than enough for a rider and all the gear he could strap to a light DS like the WR and DRZ. also the WR has a better stator for accessories if you're into that sort of thing.

>20% less peak power is a huge difference, and it's even more across the normal riding range.
Try 15%.
And in light of the WR being literally better in every other meaningful way, that 4hp doesn't count for much.

>Forks being upside down makes little to no difference.
WR has modern USD cartridge forks. DRZ has undersprong, underdamped garbage.

>more harsh
The price of performance is stiffening up the suspension so it's not made of spaghetti. The DRZ's front couch pillows perform like shit offroad and on road. And literally no one has seriously called the suspension on the WR "harsh".

>WR250R shock is way underdampened and tends to buck the rider off.
Citation needed.
If anything it's undersprung in the rear.

>WR is already geared lower than the DR-Z stock, and by a longshot as well.
The WR is geared stupid tall from the factory. 13/43 stock. 6th gear is almost not worth using for anything than perfectly flat or downhill.
Putting 13/47 gearing on a WR makes it faster than a DRZ AND it can still hit 95+mph and cruise at 75.

>Stock DR-Z gets 70+mpg as well.
hahaha

>WR literally has an advantage by having a slightly lower first gear if you like to keep the revs up when chugging through small trails.
And weight/efficiency/suspension/smoother motor/fuel injection/etc.

>I geared my DR-Z taller than stock and don't mind at all.
This is how we know what kind of riding you do. no one who gears a DRZ up does any sort of techincal riding on it. Let me guess, yo do some fire trail and that's about it?

>>16330484
>Not when you have to use more of it to get the same durability.
Except the WR is lighter. Your point is moot.

>Kek. The ones winning races use steel alloys.
No they fucking dont.

>The actual damping characteristics are the most critical part of suspension and the DR-Z fork and shock do that excellently.
It's a pretty well known fact taht DRZ forks are garbage from the factory and require springs and valving to be even passable.
They are good if all you do is hit some broken concrete on the way to work. They are garbage for any sort of serious offroading or canyon carving.

>Stock geared DR-Z vs WR at 70mph: 6657rpm for the DR-Z in 5th or 7464rpm for the WR in 6th.
And the DRZ is rattling itself apart at that speed while the WR is begging for more.

>All the reviewers for the WR say its shock was way too harsh and the DR-Z did better even though it's forks aren't upside down.

Dual sports are for fun. The fun is worth the maintenance. They have small gas tanks, light frames, and light weight for fun. They don't compromise capability for DD practicality.

If you want to commute get an adventure bike instead of a shitty DS that wishes it was an adventure bike.

No Thanks. I'lll give up a bit of capability for a reliable, reasonably maintainable bike that can ride long distances and got pretty much anywhere those "race bikes" can. And not limited offroad like a pigfat "adventure bike"

KTM uses steel frames and literally dominates the off road industry.

It's a pretty well known fact that the DR-Z forks are pretty good. Any bike will require a respring to get the most of the suspension so you might as well go with the one that will work best after the mods.

>drz is rattling itself apart at 70mph
No it's not. I could cruise at that speed for hours.

>citation
see above video

The DR-Z is a better dual sport. If you're only comparing rideability in terms of off road performance why not get a deidicated dirt bike?

"adventure bikes" are for guys that ride a million miles on pavement to ride a couble dozen on a fire road then go home. No one takes these pigfat "adventure bikes" offroad for real.

All the real adventure riders are smart enough to know a 500lb bike with gear and luggage is a garbage adventure bike. But that doesn't stop tryhards and wannabes from buying them.

No one perfers a heavy bike offroad. They are handfuls and are simply less capable. it's not a matter of riding skill. A skilled rider with a heavy bike will be less capable than an equally skilled rider with a light bike. Try harder fag. You don't know shit about adventure riding.

Vans handle poorly and are heavy, a small car is much more agile and quick.
no one would ever want to use a van for anything because its slow and heavy.
but i mean its not like you wouldnt pick the van to travel with over a shitbox car
>>
>>16330626
Nobody takes vans out into technical single track or the desert. just like no one takes pigfat adventure bikes out there either.

A light, reliable DS that can carry all you need (changes of clothes, some tools, water, etc) for the distance you need it is better than a long travel couch that weighs a ton and allows you to carry a bunch of heavy shit you don't need that makes your bike even less capable offroad.

Adventure bikes are just touring bikes with an offroad "look".

For people whop actually want to adventure offroad, a lighter bike is the answer. Something like a DRZ or WR250.

The only decent bike KTM makes for this sort of stuff is the 690 enduro, and even that takes some work to get "adventure ready". It's light and has reasonable maintenance intervals and is capable offroad. Problem is they cost an arm and a leg and are known for reliability/durability issues.

A WR, while significantly less powerful will chug along forever on road and still be great off road. And you don't have to worry about it falling apart or eating itself mechanically like you would a 690.

You can always tell the retards that never really offroad because they put an overabundance of stock in a bikes power. People that actually ride offroad know power is often a liability. They also know quality suspension is the top priority.
As long as a DS can cruise at freeway speeds without falling apart it is fine in that department. Then it really comes down to its ability offroad and that comes down to travel, ground clearance, and quality of damping.

Both the WR and DRZ are fine on the highway. The WR is more comfortable because of its seat, smoother motor, and better suspension. Offroad the WR has better suspension and better gearing full stop. the DRZ is good and can be better with mods, but the WR takes the cake in every way. People complaining about the WR's lack of torque compared to the WR don't realize most MX bikes and enduros have powerbands exactly like the WR. Low torque and power all at the top of the rev range. Only bike like the DRZ, DR650, KLR650, etc typically have lazy high toque powerbands.

having ridden both and owned neither I can tell you guys the WR is more comfortable on and off road. The DRZ is a faster bike, but that doesn't matter. These aren't race bikes. The WR has plenty of power to get along.

Trucks are capable of doing truck things. Whether their used for those things or not.
A pigfat "adventure bike" isn't capable of the things they are supposedly built for. They are essentially highway cruisers wwith ground clearance that can be taken on dirt roads.

No one takes one of these pigfat "adventure bikes" on any serious off road because they simply are not capable.
Anyone who know anything about offroading knows they need they lightest bike they can get by with.

Only a DRZ500 can usurp the DRZ400. The prophecy is retold every year on Suzuki forums across the internet. It's said to make more power and have EFI and six gears.

Really though, I have no idea. Don't even know why the DRZ suddenly caught on. Maybe Grom/Z125 will start to become available on the used market and that will be the next thing.

You can pick up a SV650 for next to nothing and they are great bikes.
Decent power, decent suspension, decent chassis, etc.

I've seen the FI ones sell for as little as $1200.

If you want more speed with a capable chassis/suspension the next step up in price would be an F4i
>>

Suzuki still a shit
>>
>>16331120
or you can just spend money upgrading the suspension. the chassis is still going to be made of spaghetti compared to more modern bikes, but let's be real, that's only really a consideration for people who are really wringing the ever-living shit out of their bikes in a competent manner. this is /dbt/ we're talking about here

Supermotos are so cheap that the Grom just doesn't make any sense to me from a practical standpoint.

For ~$3000 you can get a WR250X that is highway capable, has much better suspension, and is capable of all the same fuckaround antics as the Grom plus more that the Grom isn't capable of.

Maybe when there is a Grom used market that isn't asking more than MSRP they'll start making sense. I might pick one up if they were $1500. but no way I'm paying twice that for one.
>>
>>16331139

Yes, actually. There are some pretty high hurdles to jump when you bore the shit out of your cylinder. The oil passages get perilously close to the chamber and you run the chance of either oil getting into the cylinder or combustion blowing into the oil. Or both depending on how miserable you are. Pic related

>>16331214
Boring any 650 up any higher, you're gonna have a harder time getting a larger combustion. All that surface area, seriously.

WR has better suspension/chassis, lighter, is better on the highway (smoother, 6th gear, better suspension), handles better on and off road(suspension chassis), gets better gas mileage, and requires less maintenance.

DRZ just makes more torque and has like 5 horsepower more.
Also, DRZ's are typically more expensive because off the meme tax. I don't see DRZ's in my area for less then $4000 but I see WR's for $2500-3000 all time time.

I agree a WR450 will easily outperform a DRZ, but I'm talking about the 250 which is most often compared.

Also, the WR has to be converted to be street legal, which can be a pain in the ass depending on what state you live in. I almost bought a modded WR426 to replace my DRZ, but after a test ride decided it wasn't worth it. I assume the 450 is a good bump better than the 426, so maybe I would have jumped on that.

I don't remember exactly when this started happening, but he started putting his hands down my pants and just touched the top of my down stairs area. I always got really uncomfortable and got up from his lap, and walked away. He would start screaming and yelling at me telling me I didn't love him thats why i walked away. At first, I just thought thats what grandpas were supposed to do. I've never had a grandpa around full time. My mom was always at work, never really. Trying to support us financially. He would always give me baths. This was when i was around 7 or 8. One day, I remember he came into my room while i was getting dressed and i don't remember what e had exactly said, but he "Wanted to show me what was going on down stairs". He put a mirror up to my vagina, and started touching it. He even told me it was good to massage your breasts once in a while and demonstrated on me once or twice. I started getting really uncomfortable around him. One day he started going farther than usual, and i got up and started screaming at him (I was around 10 or 11 now) He got up and started chasing me around the house. Threatening to kill me. I ran into the bathroom, trying to lock and shut the door and he came in, and wrapped his hands around my throat and choked me. I tried to push him, but he was in the Navy and he was very strong. He flung me to the floor with great force and i sat there and cried. He got in his car and drove off. I called my mom and told her he had got into his car and drove off for no reason. I didn't want her to know he hurt me. Me and him always got into verbal fights so it was a usual thing to do for her, solve things between me and him. She called him and he said he was gonna drive his car into a wall and kill himself. Eventually that all got resolved and then he acted like nothing had happened. That was the end of that. My cousins would sometimes come visit us over break and he did the same thing to them too.

Most of that year is a blur to me. But, mid october my cousin told her older sister what was going on and she called their dad (my uncle) and his wife called CPS. Me and my mom were at the grocery store when we got him there were CPS people waiting in our driveway. They talked to my mom then they took me and her down to the CPS place. It was horrid. After 4 years my mom found out. Like this. I don't know why i didn't tell her. He went to jail and they were working on the case. I went into the sexual therapy but it wasn't any help. I was just numb and oblivious to it all. For some reason, they dropped the case. He got out of jail. There were some day i felt bad. I felt like i did this to him. Then there were days i wanted to just shoot him in the head. Just about a month ago, i finally opened up to my mom saying i wanted him in jail. I didn't want anyone else to go through this. They opened up the case again, and here we are. He's in jail now. Im now 13. Im just so numb about everything. I feel like he did this to me. Every time he would touch me I just shut out every feeling so i wouldn't get uncomfortable and walk away so he wouldn't hit me or choke me. Im just so numb i couldn't even talk to my therapist about it. I cant sort out my feelings. I just sit here. Like a zombie. Not knowing what to do and/or feel. I need help. I also think he might have raped me? But, I don't remember it.

The WR450F is in the same class as bikes like the KTM 450/500/520/525/530 EXC. Race bikes with plates.

WR250R/X and DRZ400S/SM are legit street legal DS bikes with much more reasonable maintenance schedule and less offroad performance in order to gain on road manners.

Postofacto justification.
No opinion on KTM vs. anyone.
Worked out great for BMW in the end, KTM stays as KTM. Maybe they should have taken the risk; after the fact it looks like they should've.
If you're making a le advbike meme show, it would be assumed exaggerating mechanical issues for dramatic purposes is a thing that happens. That it was kept to a minimum is probably something that was worked out behind the scenes.
