In my car, it is automatically turned off by an authentic keyfob with the correct code. The light remains on if the car thinks it MIGHT be hotwired. The car continues to operate because there are situations in which parts can fail, so the computer doesn't totally immobilize the car in those gray area situations.

If you don't have an authentic keyfob because you lost all the keys, then you can very easily go to the dealership. They will sell to you an authentic keyfob of course because you need at least one of those with these modern cars.
