there's a rental company that rents out escapes with offroad tires on them. Any car will make it as long as it has good tires and is in good mechanical shape. awd isn't necessary if you do alaska in the warmer months.

Key West to Prudhoe Bay?

Any car will make it in summer. There are long stretches of gravel near the Tok cutoff and north of Fairbanks on the Haul Road, but it's generally well graded and limed to keep the dust down. 95% of the route is paved. Be aware that it gets crowded in summer with lots of campers / RVs, and prices can he shocking as you get closer to Alaska.

Take something you don't mind getting the paint chipped, the windshield stoned, and covered in sticky caustic chloride mud. Ideally something that can handle hundreds of miles of gravel with some washboard tossed in.


Finally, be aware that at Prudhoe Bay it's a secure company work camp, and they won't let you access the Arctic ocean without special advanced permission or as part of a tour. And bunks at Prudhoe Bay is pricey an fills up fast. You can get violent rain / snow even in summer, and mosquitos are more fierce the further north you go.

Just a comfy huge truck. Like a ford raptor or something. Something big enough to sleep in, 4wd, has good (enough) gas mileage.

Yeah, north of the Brooks Range it's 24 hours of daylight during the tourist season. That means it can be quite balmy, with temps in the 80s at times. But you can get popup rain storms that will soak you, then the temps can drop into the 30s with snow, then back up to the 60s the next day.

The only thing for certain is mosquitos and biting flies. When they're not swarming the caribou they're eating you. Bring repellent and a mosquito head net if you plan to get out of your vehicle or camp. Or get gasoline. Or eat.

Take a spare fuel container if your vehicle can't easily do 350 miles on a tank.

All these roads are doable in general. There may be sections under construction during maintenance (summer) season, but at worse it will mean a 30 minute wait while a pilot car comes to escort you through a 1-lane section for 20 miles. It's really not much different that parts of the Rockies or Cascades in the summer, just more of it.

My wife's grandparents drove the Dempster highway all the way to Inuvik NWT in an 80s Ford Escort back in the early 1990s. They were in their late 50s. Totally doable. Just don't leave the roadbed for any reason.

If you're going to Fairbanks or north plan on sacrificing one windshield to trucks passing in the opposite direction, especially if you are in a passenger car or crossover. The trucks don't slow down, and gravel can go flying everywhere.

Drove Key West to Cali a couple of years back, anything road worthy can manage that.


Drove up to Deadhorse AK last year.
Took a Jeep Wrangler with truck tires which was overkill. A regular 2wd car can manage but something AWD like a Subaru WRX would have been comfier most of the way.

The only tough road was on the Alcan in BC and Yukon - lots of roadwork, gravel and dirt instead of paved road then the dirt Dalton Highway to the Arctic ocean - a few potholes and a little mud.

Except during rain. Once it starts to come down having a 4x4 is a decent idea, no photos of the mud but I had to remove the wheels and shovel it out once I got back to Fairbanks.
