The DR-Z400 is objectively the best expert level dual sport bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke single cylinder bike, so it gets at least 50mpg.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport. It it tall and light with a steering geometry set up to be very agile. This combined with the wide handlebars make it very easy to change directions.
> brakes
The brakes are designed for off-road and aren't so twitchy they will lock up easily on slick surfaces. They are completely acceptable but require a firm squeeze, yet with a larger diameter rotor upgrade like on the SM model you will find it taking no effort at all to slow down very quickly.
> power
When you're a good rider you don't need 100+ HP to pass everyone on the touge. Git gud faget.
> carbs
The CV carb found on the DR-Z helps calm down the twitchiness of a lightweight single.
> seating position
The tall seat combined with a completely upright seating position puts you high enough to see over all but the highest brotrucks. It is also a very comfortable position which puts practically no strain on your lower back or wrists.
> price and availability
The bike has gone unchanged for the last 15 years so there's plenty available for very cheap. The popularity and lack of change keeps the resale value high so it's easy to sell. This has the downside of making them expensive to buy in the used market but can be avoided with patience.
> suspension
The Dr-Z400 features a fully adjustable Showa cartridge forks and shock which offer splendid damping characteristics. You can tune it to your riding style with the clickers and preload adjusters, but you will benefit from a respring if you're a fat fuck. Lose some weight.

What shitty helmet brand produces more wind noise than the bike does engine noise?

Seriously i want to know, are they chinese helmets?

Did you ever consider buying a quality helmet?
Maybe a Shoei?

I know with my Shoei wind noise is next to non existent, all you can hear is the engine.
>>
>>16311843
It doesn't matter what helmet you have. Prolonged exposure to moderate noise levels is proven to damage your hearing.
>>
if Yamaha built an electric Tri City they'd call it elec-Tri City
>>
>>16311843
helmets dont produce noise. wind noise doesnt "sound" loud but is a higher pressure than engine noise. not sure why you keep bringing up engine noise, they are not the cause of hearing loss, the wind is. yes more expensive helmets are quieter than cheaper ones, but not able to prevent wind noise damage.

By your logic i better not even yell ever again because that is over 85 decibels and capable of causing hearing damage.

How Do You Make A Helmet Quiet?

>Earplugs. If you don’t ride with them now, start doing so. RideApart highly recommends Howard Leight Max Lite earplugs. Buy a box of 200 and stash extra pairs in all your pockets.
>>
>>16312058
yeah I roll them up and push them deep enough to feel them bottom out so there's nothing sticking out past my ear at all. But as my ears wiggle around (especially bad if I get an itchy head and try to scratch it through the helmet so it pulls my scalp around) they get looser and stop doing as well.

barbagallo looks like a death trap, I think it's a positive move so long as they fix it up and reopen it to bikes in the future with decent runoffs and safety improvements for bikes.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-15/mia-davies-unaware-of-barbagallo-raceway-safety-audit/8028224

>Opposition Sport spokesman Peter Watson told Parliament the independent report had identified a range of safety issues with the circuit, and concluded the track was unsafe for motorcycle racing.

Shutting it down for bikes was already recommended and was probably always gonna happen, the death just sped it up.

The road is dangerous you want a safe track guys.

my trx had uneven preload in the forks when I got it, plus the rear was jacked to like 9/10 clicks for god knows what reason. So it shook its head and was super skippy and light in the rear.

>Ride bike after a month not using it
>Struggles to start, clicks, just manages to get to life
>Know battery is on its way out, getting new one tomorrow
>Ride for 5 minutes around the neighbourhood to test new pegs and levers
>On way back, after slowing for a give way, electrics and bike dies
>Electrics flutter on and off
>Quickly smash that mother fucking starter button and give it revs
>Runs very poorly for 10 seconds, feather the throttle to keep revs up
>Take it home

It is the battery, right? It's not the stator. Please tell me it's not the stator. I was under the impression even a shit battery wouldn't die if you got the bike started originally.

Is your ignition system part of the rest of the bikes electrics or is it stand alone?

Wear pic related all the time. Not just passive noise cancelling earbuds, but play music though as well. Still perfectly aware of the sound of nearby vehicles, and aware of distant vehicles because I'm not retarded. Any rider with decent roadcraft knows about vehicles outside audible range anyway, over the noise of your own bike, wind etc.
The only thing I can't really hear is people talking to me at a regular volume. Can usually even carry on a dialogue since erry small talkin idiot says the same stupid shit anyway.

>>16311799
Ever get that ringing in your ear after listening to wind noise for ages? Same ringing like after listening to heavy machinery? Same symptom of stimuli that are damaging to your hearing.

How to insert an earplug:
>right ear
>roll earplug into thin cylinder with right hand
>reach left hand over your head & pull the top of your right ear up & back
>right ear canal opening straightens
>insert earplug

What back protector should I get? Is Dainese the best one?

Which one do I get if I'm 170cm, G1 or G2?
>>
>>16314023
The one that fits your jacket.
>>
>>16314026
I wear a 46 Dainese but will also use the protection in an L Spyke, so which one?
>>
Also what about this one?

https://www.amazon.it/Dainese-1876097-001-N-Protezione-Moto-Paraschiena/dp/B00YHSYLF6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481653651&sr=8-2&keywords=dainese+g1

Is it better/worse?
>>
>>16312207
That's too bad because some hick in a pickup had his girl stolen by a harley biker and he's out for revenge

>>16312975
Everything sounds like a sewing machine if you never check the valves

Also crankshaft setup and ignition timing on mutli-cyllinder engines is more important than the number of cyllinders in determining sound

It's really expensive for what it is

I'm not looking at a specific bike yet, but the general price here is around 4500€ with ABS and 4000€ without ABS, all around 20.000 kms

I really like the exhaust design, but what I don't like are the joined brakes the bike has

also, it has 102 hp compared to it's rivals, which is pretty cool

4000-4500 for a 2007-2008 Hornet is too much. You can buy a middle weight naked from 2010-2011 with that money, 2012-2013 even if you consider a Bandit or a XJ6.

Sub 4000 would ideal. 3500 okay depending on the state of the bike, a good deal is near 3000.

Try avoiding dealerships, they overcharge.

Although I'm in New York I bought my 2012 monster 796 for 5500 this summer with 3700 miles on it. I know it's not an apples to apples comparison but that price range seems a bit high.

it might just be the season or that I live in a rather rich part of germany, but almost all late 2000s sportbike derived nakeds (FZ6, GSR600, Z750) with ABS and relatively low miles seem to be around that price. I was also considering a street triple, but my bank account laughed me in the face

>bandit or XJ6
I really don't want a sub 95hp inline 4 bike, maybe a V2 or I3 with a bit less, but not an I4

indians, they have to fit their whole family and their pet goat on there, if the bike is already made there

I know, but that honestly killed their reputation. Everytime I see a KTM now, I'm disappointed they outsourced their production to fucking indians of all, just to get a quick buck

its kinda obvious that its just a body kit for the MT09 (including the bent swingarm thats supposed to frame the exhaust) and i doubt those extra 3500 bucks are justified but fuck me if it isnt pretty to look at.
