So I went to look at this 2003 320i E46 and everything looks clean and it drives nicely. The only hitch the guy said was that it revs up and down sometimes but it hardly happenes anymore because of a software restart he did at a mechanic. Im obviously going to get it checked by a BMW mechanic too. Its done 117000 kms and he's asking $5.8k NZD. thoughts?

Probably an idle control valve, or a sensor. Get fault codes read and go from there. Either way not really a big deal.
I have an E46, they are good cars. 2 things that kill them is rust and cooling systems. If you don't have any issues there you are golden. 6 pot MUCH better than the 4, so long as you don't cook it it will run forever.
automatic gearboxes shit the bed if the oil isn't changed, but clutches should last a very long time if not abused.
320i isn't fast but it isn't exactly underpowered for normal driving. Enjoy anon
