So youre telling me the shift linkage running down the column of my truck, bolted to a shift lever, that's connected directly to the linkage running down from the firewall to the transmission isnt a direct connection to the gearbox?

Uh knob style are typically less complicated, also makes things easier in factory when the manual and auto versions of the same car have the same floor pan.

Regardless the reasoning why is less important since most auto shifters no longer have mechanical linkages.
