A common thing Dutch people do is throw a bag of kitty litter in the back. It makes for great traction material for next to nothing
>>
>>16304980
Just realized, some people might think I meant the bag toe act as extra weight. Throw a handful in front of each tire if you can't get away. It gets you some decent grip on ice
>>
>>16304985
That used to be a bit of a thing in the US as well. But that was back when cars were RWD and dad taught you the life secrets.

Block heaters?
>>
>>16305938
it plugs into your electrical outlet at night and heats your coolant to keep the engine warm.
>>
>>16305942
Why can't this be built in to cars automatically?
>>
>>16305952
it would add a manufacturing cost for a feature that is unnecessary to the majority of the consumers who would buy the car.

>>
>>16305901

>>
>>16305952
It used to be very important/necessary to use a block heater, but with fuel injection and generally better cold start design, the engine doesn't actually need to be warm anywhere to run well.

Diesels still use block heaters for the most part, but smaller diesels (cars, pickups) are even getting away from needing to be plugged in except for the coldest days. Some don't even come with heaters anymore.

Battery heaters are a cheap way to do it now. The only part that really matters on gas engines now is "can your battery turn the engine fast enough when everything is cold".

Haven't seen it, no, but we regularly have -30'C days (before windchill) and the only issue is the battery. My company uses diesel trucks F250s in the arctic. They'll cold start down to -40 before they have to be plugged in (but if it's that late into winter, nobody's manning the sites anyways). The jet fuel they burn has to have additives to not freeze, though.

Does a block heater help? Of course. Less wear on cold starts. But as to why it's not installed as standard, it's because it isn't necessary and car companies are top jew.

I just wish I'd done something to make the back end stay cleaner. It's covered in black shit right now, because of aerodynamics.
Removing the vacuum behind the car results in air being sucked around onto the back of the car. Wet filthy air means the car has a filthy wet arse. The rest of the car is clean and shiny due to hitting water at high speeds.

It's heated too but It's not very well insulated. It's extra $200 dollars a month in gas to heat in the winter

Option to heat it to like 3'C instead of house temperature?

I'm sure 1000 bucks of insulation would go a long way, too.

I keep it 10'C. But It does need to be insulated better. It's pretty drafty.

I just got my license last week (24). I have as 1991 Ford Ranger FWD v6. Am I supposed to do something different because it's a truck? I read something about putting sandbags in the back of the bed, it's pretty tiny. Are snow tires a meme?

My summer tires were not ready, put my small 4 piston brakes back on so I could run my stock wheels this last weekend.
>>
>>16309075
I assume you meant RWD?

Sand bags or cat litter in the back, whichever you can get cheaper.

Snow tires aren't a meme in the snow (or on ice), but if you do bother with snow tires, do some research and get decent ones. Cheap snow tires are often just as bad as all seasons; then you'll be just another idiot parroting "snow tires are a meme" when in reality you're just a cheap jew.

Don't be a cheap jew.

Also learn that spinning your tires like a weiner doesn't usually get you going any faster than a smooth, gentle acceleration on slippery surfaces (unless it's a lot of snow and you're digging through it).

2WD. How about these? I'm kind of broke so this is basically my price range. Should be snowing in the next week, hate to learn to really drive on snow but can't be helped, bad timing.
>>
>>16309143
Never used them. I'm one of the idiots that cheaped out on winter tires, but I don't use the car that often anyways. I just bought whatever the sale was to replace the rubber on my winter rims. That is how I know that not all tires are created equal, though.

But if you read reviews and compare prices, and you're confident those seem like good winter tires after a half hour-ish of research, then chances are they're good winter tires. You basically just need to avoid the "Discount Tire House of Rubber Super Savings" garbage, because they really are garbage.

Also, find a parking lot to root around in if this will be your first driving experiences. Get comfortable when the back slips, because it will, regardless of tires or sand. But, it's very easy to control, you just have to be used to the sensation and not panic basically.

If you push it more it gets better. Also there are three suspension things you can do for both fun and safety:

1. antilift kit on the front; makes the front more compliant to take out some understeer
2. make sure your rear sway bar is decent (e.g. 17mm)
3. crash bolts in the rear at about -1.5deg negative camber so you can lean on the rear all day long around corners but still be able to goose it if you want

Keeping the rear tires inflated a bit more helps with how much rear push you get out of it.

Be careful trying to drift that thing anon. I went from a rust-bucket Camaro that was fun as shit in the snow to a Legacy wagon 5mt. I stuffed it into a snowbank today thanks to snap oversteer after trying straighten out my drift, did the same shit last winter too, no damage thankfully. They really don't behave like a rwd car at all. Also DO NOT EVER do e-brake slides, you'll wreck the center diff and possibly the transmission too. Learn this guy's lesson:

Hey its that idiot that thought mud tires would do him any good in ice conditioned and T-boned a Shitsu.
>>
>>16313483
It's hard telling in the picture, but the only contact point appears to be where you placed the wooden shim under the ratchet itself.

If nothing else it'll help in a rollover when the frame snaps in half.

Just ordered General Altimax Arctic tires for my car.
The reviews make them seem pretty good, anyone have any personal experience?
>>
>>16316471
That is the contact point, but the strap is not level - it is pushing down onto the box with quite a lot of force, and with the piece of wood angled like that its putting most of the force down, but also a lot "backwards" so it wont slip forwards

Trust me - it aint going nowhere
>>
>>16317818
Still an iffy looking strap job mate. Don't be like me, half-ass it, come to a quick stop, and praise jebus you know the guy in front of you because your car just launched a whole clip of roof-fired lumber missiles and now you have to go pick it all up and tie it down better before the light turns green.
>>
>>16317836
How would you have strapped it down?
>>
>>16317861
It's tough to judge that by a picture alone, and the block is a good move considering the shallow angle of strapping provided by the wheel wells. But basically the question is if one bit fails what's going to catch it?

I guess it can't go too far if it's trapped in an enclosed bed, but I'd rather have it at least tied down in too dimensions.

The plank where the strap is right above is more shallow than the planks infront and behind it. Thats what makes the block of wood sit really nicely and safe.

I dont wanna be "that guy", but I've been loading musical equipment, motorcycles, snowmobiles, furniture, building supplies, a few cars, lawn mowers, chair lift chairs and dead moose for for the last 10-ish years now. I'll be as humble as to say that I know strapping and that I take securing cargo very seriously

If I was to make that more secure I'd replace the two behind and infront with bigger ones, and the contact-plank with a bigger one that is still smaller than the other two, sand the ends of it and use as much of the surface as possible for contact

Here is a big photo, if it helps
>>
>>16317942
I'm just a belt and suspenders kind of guy. Small effort for a lot of insurance. I didn't catch the planks the first time, which is also clever, but even that seems like a lot of effort to secure a single point of failure.

Neat ground strap tho on the roof
>>
>>16317950
It aint neat - doesnt fucking work for some reason. I just ended up running a ground to the engine bay instead of spending more time fucking with it

Sad thing is that there is not much else I can do than that one point. The other two rings for the hooks are right at the front end of the bed, and there is no real beneficial way I could those to further tie the crate down.
>>
>>16317950
I could, looking at the photo, do a similar thing with a strap at the front - but the angling on the strap would mean that a lot of the force will go to pulling the box forwards, which is not preferrable
>>
>>16317973
Well what the hell current is running between some bars and a detachable truck cover? Engine bay is always the way to go.

The cross strap you have is really the way to go in my opinion. But for instance you could criss cross around the front and back attached to the same points just in the hopes that all hell doesn't break loose and to put less stress on your main money maker.

I dunno... it was there when I bought the top so I figured it was there for a reason

Criss cross how? Sorry if I'm being retarded
>>
>>16318007
Uh, like, start at one tie down point, bring it over the front, underneath around the back and then to the other tie point. Same thing from the other side so they criss-cross (ideally wrap around each other to help hold both in place).

As long as that doesn't reduce the god friction you probably have between wood and bed, then it's a bit of a stabilizer to help keep things from shifting around enough loosen up at the wrong time.
>>
>>16318015
I suppose thats a way
Still; if I do the build-up in >>16317942 its not ever going to move to the sides due to the quite sharp angle of the strap, and its not moving forwards due to the edge touching the front of the bed. As for backwards; it'll never slide no matter how steep it gets, and I dont see myself reversing this thing doing 80kph any time soon. The strap is also rated for 4000kg, if that helps.

We'll see if I end up doing something. I inspect it daily for now
>>
>>16304806

I have 3 different cheap-o all season tires on (douglas performance gt-h in rear, a newer douglas all season on driver front and a hancook whatever passenger front)and because i'm the fwd meme i won't have an issue with the winter here in new york

Need to get a better snow/ice scraper though
>>
>>16318038
Oh yeah if it's up against the front that's pro. In that case I would probably just work something around the back to make sure it stays that way.

It's actually pretty impressive what straps can hold in place when they're used right. It's just that 0.1% when something goes wrong. Kind of like your snow tires are tits until somebody almost t-bones you out of nowhere.
>>
>>16318007
Oh you know what here's a guess. Was that ground strap put on by somebody with a CB? Because it would be understandable to want to establish a good ground plane for your antenna.

Nope, not as I know. The guy who owned the car it was attached to before my friend that I bought it from used his Hilux as a farm/hunting vehicle, and I never saw any The cable is attached to a bracket/mount for what I can only assume to be an extra lamp, marked in red

Could be its just not enough ground for 300w?
>>
>>16318110
Oh, that would make sense. I just picked up a new ride and the last guy ran some fancy like 10ga big red wire to the trunk for his sub, but then grounded it by shaving the insulation off like a 28ga wire running to some fucking thing where you might as well toss your fancy trunk light in the trash if it's not something more important.
>>
>>16318121
He grounded it to what now?
>>
>>16318129
I don't know. I still have to look through the service manual. But I assume something in the trunk in an electro-magnetic shielding box with 30 wires plugged in might be something more important than the trunk light. And I don't know why you'd almost cut the ground wire into it when you could find a ground like every other single place in the car.

Like I don't know, why not ground it right to the radiation shield? Won't even have to scrape any paint. Jesus.

Always fun to view babbys first electrical work

Kinda like how the 2 x Hellas on an Opel a friend bought would flicker when going on rough gravel roads - cable shoes had not been crushed ontop of the wires. They had just stuffed the wires in and put insulation tape all around to make cable & shoe stay together

Bald is bad mkay but something like that you can get away with decent modern all seasons and not being dumb. Get thee to a parking lot and slide your car around is the important learning part really.

For instance Kumho Extas should be something like $100 ea depending on the size you need, and they actually do perform better than you might think in all seasons.

Not the greatest for grip and they will only last 5 years before the rubber cracks enough requiring replacement.

For longevity get either Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear even Uniroyal is and all those these should last easy 7 years with proper rotations.

Performamce wise, read the reviews I install tires don't drive on them.

Pic unrelated
Here's a Bridgestone Turanza all season I took off for a car last week and it was manufactured in the 30th week of 2010
