Damned impressive that they dont seem to have any rust yet, and as such it'll be way easier to clean and repaint them

Wheel paint on a can

Clean them with a wire brush attached to a drill, get them sandblasted or similar. Then put some good steel primer on the clean metal before rattlecanning it with the color you wanted

Its a fucking shitty process to clean them with a wire brush, and rattlecan paint never really looks good unless you are very skilled with it and use high-quality ones

Would it be possible to put a manual transmission into an SUV or are there just some things you can't put a manual transmission in?
>>
>>16299914
buy a 2nd or 3rd gen 4runner and save yourself the hassle
>>
>>16299914
Anything is possible. You can adapt any transmission to any engine with enough fabrication.
If your engine came with a manual transmission in another vehicle, it may be a bit easier for you than if it hadn't. You will likely need a new trans crossmember, new wiring for safety switches and whatnot, lengthened / shortened driveshaft(s), a hole in the floor for the shifter, unless your SUV has a suitable column shifter (which it most likely does not).
You may need to mess with the firewall and floorpan for clearance as well.
>>
>>16299973
I just want a manual Durango.

>>16299976
It all does sound like a fun project though.
>>
>>16299995
Do some research first.
Have other people done the swap?
Does the engine that's in the durango have a manual that can bolt up? Say, does the pentastar have a manual that's been behind it?
After you find all of that, then figure out how the shifter will line up; wiring, or adapting the wiring for the manual switches / sensors / ecu; then driveshafts, etc.
>>
>>16300123
I'm guessing no to all but like you said, it can be done with enough fabrication. Also doesn't most almost all RWD transmissions run through the middle of the car?

Actually from the light research I've just done you can get some good parts from old dakotas that'll work pretty well.
>>
>>16300194
yes, most if not all Front engined, rear drive cars have transmissions more or less centered.
>>
>>16300207
So how hard can it be to line up the shifter?
>>
>>16300227
Depends on where it is on the trans compared to the floorpan of the vehicle.
In some vehicles, you may need to pull the dash and massively fuck shit up, or some, if just comes up near where a floor shifter usually would.
>>
>>16300239
Oh so just far far in the transmission would be from the flywheel?

Unless we are talking about a solid-axle RWD, then the axle is probably bent as well.

>>
>>16298440
I'd hit them with some proper wheel degreaser, scrub the fuck out of them with a bristle brush and see how they turn out. If they're covered in paint, either have them media blasted and paint them or wire wheel/sand and paint, don't forget to clear coat.
They look like a bare metal wheel though so if that's the case and oxidize cleaner would be in order and probably need to sand them down by hand to remove scaling and any pitting. Probably start around 200-300 grit and work your way up to 2000 if you want a mirror finish, or start low and get the shit off them back to all metal then go over with something like brillo pads for that brushed metal look, you'll want to clear them to prevent it again and keep them nice.
Tldr the cheap fix is clean and paint. The correct way is time and effort and hand work.
>>
>>16300245
In a way. The shifter doesn't come up fron the transmission in the same place for every trans. in some, it may come up only a few inches from the end of the tailhousing, other times, it may be a foot forward.

That's another thing, you'll have to swap your flexplate for a flywheel.

Fucking shitty american build quality bullshit.
I have a 97 blazer, the hatch actuator seems to not be getting any signal/power to open the hatch via the dashboard button.
I've already gotten the hatch apart, and the dash for that matter.
I have tested the actuator with an external power source, and it does it's job.
I have disassembled the dash switch, and that seems to be intact as well.
I have replaced the dome light and #2 fuse (Horn, dome light, and cig lighter(maybe idk about the last one for sure)), it should be the fuse that handles that.
All I can think is that the actuator isnt getting any power to it. I suspect a damaged wire, but it's 30F out and I don't care that much to fix it right now.
I was just hoping you guys could give me any ideas of what I could do that I haven't already.
Again, the actuator IS FULLY FUNCTIONAL, and the switch is presumed functional as well.

>>16304345
No idea about the electrics in a 97 blazer, but if the switch is beefy and controls the actuator directly, you could just run a temporary cable under the rugs (fire hazard though!), and deal with faulty wiring when it gets warmer. If the actuator is controlled through a relay, check if the relay inputs and the relay itself are ok. If the actuator is controlled by the ECU and there's no signal on the relay input when you press the button, you're most likely in trouble.

There are BOSCH (think) relays under the hood. I'll look tomorrow. The suns down and I need to research what relay I need to be looking at. Thanks. Searching through forums is a pain in the ass, and none of what I found had my problem It was all about the actuator arm breaking or the fuses going.

I just bought a car and the clutch seems pretty stiff. I've driven manual before, but only on trucks and motorcycles.

Supposedly it was a "race" clutch. Would a "race" clutch make it stiffer/harder than a regular clutch? The engagement point also seems smaller compared to my dad's ranger.

Also, not sure if I'm going crazy, but it seems like it wants to crawl forward in neutral. In my motorcycle, usually that means the clutch isn't adjusted correctly. Probably a stupid question, just want to confirm since I'm used to doing maintenance on motorcycles, not cars.

a relay / solenoid is simply a (mechanical or solid state)switch, which is operated by another (usually smaller, hand actuated) switch.

Look at pic related, if this were hooked up you'd see a battery (+) wire hooked onto that left post, which was always live, and a wire hooked to that far right post as well, which would lead to the starter. Normally these two posts will be 'open'(or disconnected).

One of those two smaller posts in the center will be the 'activate' post. When 12v is applied to that post it activates the solenoid, closing the circuit and bridging the gap between the far left and far right larger posts.

so all a relay does is 'relay' the signal(the signal being ON/OFF) from one circuit to a completely seperate circuit, usually because the seperate circuit is high current and would need a huge, beefy switch to safely handle the load, so instead a solenoid / relay is used.

I feel like a god damn retard now because i can't even explain what a solenoid does without writing a wall of text.

Are Lexus cars worth manual swapping? Are they meant to be cruising slushboxes or would it be worth doing a swap? I want to get an LS400 but it seems not worth supercharging or any sort of performance modding if I can't completely control it
>>
Why is it that on all the cars I tried since the 10 years I had a licence always have a different throttle response if the car is moving or not?

To clarify: if you are standing still and try to rev the engine, it will go up relatively quick, but if the car is moving and you press the clutch or put it in neutral and then try to rev, it will go up (and down) much, much slower.

It happened on all cars I tried (and I get to use rentals for work, so I drove a lot of different cars), none of which had carbs.

I never understood the point of this, the only supposition I can do is that it somehow gives a smoother ride when moving while allowing to pick up revs quickly when you need to pull off from a standstill..but I am really trying to guess here.

Anyone knows something about it?

I am waiting for the CTS to take its yearly depreciation hit. I've seen them as low as 19, some with a KBB value of 16k.

If new car, go to multiple dealers and get multiple prices. Pit them all against each other. Learn everything you can about the car. Try to find out the wholesale price of the car, the MSRP of the car and aim for a price in between those two.

at a complete stop you're creating levels of vacuum in the throttle body that the ECU can easily compensate for as well as using the IAC which allows more air into your intake

>at a stop, IAC opens to control idle
>rev engine
>car sucks in all the air it needs and closes IAC
>let off gas
>car stop sucking in air
>IAC opens so car doesn't stall from sudden vacuum
VS
>car is moving, IAC will not open
>take foot off gas, vacuum is created in TB
>put in neutral, rev engine
>vehicle has to overcome greater vacuum than at stop and without help of IACs extra air
>Pic somewhat related

I'm planning to move across the country to California soon, and will be driving it, nearly 2,000 miles. The problem is I have an exhaust system that my car won't pass Cali's smog test with.

How realistic would it be to just sell my car to someone once I'm there, and be upfront about the exhaust system? I'd rather not lie to someone and get bit in the ass for selling a car that's not street legal.

Or should I just sell it beforehand and buy another car for the journey? I'd really rather not do this, because I KNOW my car can make the journey, and would be paranoid with another one. Replacing the exhaust with stock isn't an economical option by the way.

you have 30 days to notify CA that you moved there and to register your vehicle
you are required to have a current smog test or you must sell your vehicle as-is (no implied warranty)
my advice: drive there in your car and see if it will pass smog, if it doesn't it will probably be a cheap repair or you have a month or so to sell it
>if it's OBDII i bet it will pass smog
>not having a CEL is half the test
>the other half is it not visibly smoking
protips:
>always get an appointment
>smog tests in the morning always look better b/c of water vapor
>try to avoid idling your vehicle before the test, tell smog guy you drove there in over 30 min and your car is already at operating temp.

Yeah, I've read that E46s generally have everything fail in them around the 100k mark. I'll definitely be taking the one I'm looking at to a mechanic.

I'm worried that the one I found is being sold because the previous owner got fed up with all the failures, but it does have a new clutch so maybe he did maintain it.

So I bought a shitbox the other day, and everything fine and dandy, but while practicing how to learn stick in a parking lot I noticed there was a terrible noise while turning full lock. Assuming nothing else beside the barrel was broken or tampered with, it could be that the transponder receiver on your barrel broke of fell off, they are usually sold separately.

A lot of times they look like pic related, it's a plastic ring around the barrel that could easily be mistaken for a cosmetic trim piece, they may be shaped differently though.

Try to see if your receiver is still where it is supposed to be and that it is connected properly.

Other than that, check if the fuckers broke something else or cut some wires down there.

axle is fine and nut is fine. fastener retention is what it sounds like, a fail-safe is shit decides to loosen off.

another style of retention is castle nut and cotter pin. if the nut isn't on tight enough, the pin would have to shear before the nut would back off. pic related

Hello friends

When I get a garage sorted I'll be using it to park a modified Lada Niva 4x4

I'm wondering if it'll be worth buying some low power fans and having a small window/vent open for when I wash the car after offroading or bring it home after being out in the rain.
The theory behind this being that it would dry the car considerably faster and minimize the possibility of rust that the Niva is prone to.

Any opinions?

>I need to replace the calipers and rotors
Don't worry about the staked nut. That's attached to the hub, which is separate from the rotors. And the calipers.

The rotor is usually held on to the hub by either the wheel or a single bolt.
>>
>>16314431
to dry out the interior type deal? if your carpets regularly get wet when you go offroading, it would be a good idea personally I'd just leave the car out in the sun, but that's not always a viable option.

Might be a good idea to get the car oil sprayed to prevent rust aswell. Do it after cleaning off mud and other shit from your undercarriage, I don't know how through the guys work at the oil spray places are.

So I need to replace my classic car's wiring harness and the best value one is designed for "modified" vehicles only. (Pic Related is it's pre-purchase warning).

My car is currently running:
60 amp two-wire alternator
single point distributor
standard sized battery
carb
no aftermarket mods/changes short of a new stereo, everything is essentially stock

This harness is advertised as the go-to choice for handling 100+ amp alternators with wiring support for various electrical modifications (electric fan, air suspension, high voltage headlights, etc.).

I don't understand why they specify so heavily that the harness is for a high current alternators/modified vehicles only. As long as I don't add any extra draw on the system, it shouldn't matter should it?

So if I just install an electronic ignition as well as continue using a 60 amp alternator (in a 1-wire setup), will any other components be negatively affected?

And even if I do switch to a 130amp alternator, that change alone wouldn't require me to upgrade anything else (igntion coil, battery, etc.) would it?

Im terrible with electrical stuff and really don't want to re-fry my whole harness...

There you go, the site is in russian, but the catalog itself is in English. Either get your VIN in there or click the other tab next to the VIN one to sort through the models.
Once you have the models, you need to choose something from the second drop down menu, by the looks of it it seems it makes you choose the model year of your car. Once that's done, click the blue button on the right and the english part catalogue will appear.

This leads me to believe that the tensioner needs to be replaced, as well as the idler pulley too.

I want to know a few different things: Is this diagnostic correct? Is the pulley tensioner wheel supposed to freely spin or stay locked? What else should I replace with both pulleys? Belt too?

Anything else I need to know?

If you need any additional information or photos, I'll do my best to provide.

Thank you so much for the help

i actually just changed mine on my malibu where the idler pulley locked up and popped my belt off

the tensioner pulley is supposed to move and put pressure on the belt so it doesnt slip

Just make sure the teeth line up for the tensioner and you dont first put it in backwards like i did and also a 3/8th mini breaker bar is godlike to remove tensioner
>>
.>>16318341
Yes, the idler is supposed to spin freely, just like the tensioner. The bearing in the idler probably broke and jammed the pulley.

The burning smell is coming from your belt getting very hot because of the friction with the pulley.

For a definitive diagnosis you can remove the belt and try to hand-turn both the idler and the tensioner while applying some lateral force to the pulleys to somewhat simulate the belt load. They should spin freely when you turn and load them, you shouldn't feel roughness or grinding or any free play in any direction. Since you already saw the idler is jammed, this is mostly a test for the tensioner so you know if it needs to be replaced too.

If you feel the pulley being "bumpy" or that there is something grinding inside it, then it means the bearing is bad and you should replace the whole thing before it jams like the idler and burns another belt.

Once you know what needs to be done, go get a new idler, belt (it's probably ruined) and possibly the tensioner too. See if they can also give you new bolts, sometimes they are included in the packaging.

I can't figure out how the ECU can tell when which cylinder is in a compression stroke as opposed to an exhaust stroke - after all, if cylinder 1 (for example) is at TDC - which is what the CPS indicates - we don't know whether it's about to start an intake stroke or a power stroke.

What am I missing here?

after doing my 120k mile service I'm having a bit of trouble setting timing- I replaced my crank pulley during the service with a lightened one and although it does have the timing marking that you have to light up with a timing gun on it the way it's positioned relative to where the stock pulley had its mark makes it impossible to see. Can I dab some paint on the new aluminum crank pulley to make the mark visible? What kind of paint is best to use? pic related

not the best artist but I hope the pic explains what I mean- basically the stock pulley mark is long enough where it sticks out from the timing cover degree marks, but the aftermarket one is short and doesn't so you can't see it when you flash the timing gun and look at the marks. What I'm wondering is if I can grab some paint and "draw" out the timing mark and make it a bit longer so I can see it. Will a small dab of paint hurt my belts?

A camshaft position sensor on it's own is enough to tell whether or not it's on an intake or power stroke because, well, the position of the camshaft determines that.
And whether or not the cylinder is on power stroke doesn't matter all that much. Wasted spark is a thing. Pic related: 4 cylinders, 2 coils.

With electrical stuff you need to make sure that there are appropriate grounds to the chassis and engine block at the various components of the system. Another component you need to worry about is if this wiring harness is for an alternator with a built in rectifier or not. You also need to consider the ratings of the fuses on the stock car to what the aftermarket harness is, if the aftermarket harness has a higher amp fuse than the car, use the car's rated fuse for that circuit to avoid problems. Furthermore, if your wiring system can handle higher amperage than the stock it is fine, it is only when the stock system is designed for higher current on a given rail then what you replace with that problems will occour.

Also, looking at this system I can see that you need to find many places on the chassis to mount the ground wires. You will want to coat everything in some kind of grease to prevent oxidation of the terminals.

Hey /o/, I need ideas on how to fix the issue of a tire rubbing the spring perch in a McPherson strut type suspension

The situation is this: the tire is just too tall (too much sidewall) by about an eight of an inch, and there's a full inch of contact between the tire and the spring perch, so spacers are a no-go unless something else is done to help the situation, but I can't really think of something to that effect, is there anything else I can do to move the damper relative to the wheel?

So far the only options I have in my mind (besides wheel spacers+something else) are getting OE dampers that have a higher spring perch, relative to the wheel spindle (unlikely), or OE dampers that have spring perches oriented in a different way from the current ones (possibly hard to find out/ensure if it would work), OR going for coil-overs that have small enough springs to clear the tires (that should be no problem), which I wouldn't mind all that much, since the suspension is in need of some attention, although it's a costly patch-up work...

Anybody have an idea on how to help the situation? I've been looking around for info & help, but so far I got nothing

>>
>>16320312
Is this happening after a modification you did on the car, like getting the wrong tires or wheels with a too big offset; or is it "stock"?
Because in the first case you need to get back to the previous set up if you don't want to get coil overs.

I am also assuming the contact patch is too big to just grind a little bit of excess material from the perch.
>>
>>16320233
Thanks famalam
>>
>>16322988
Car is stock. Tires are indeed too big, about an inch too wide, although the real issue is they're approx. 1/8 of an inch too tall. Can't really go back to the old setup, got 4 tires for cheaper than the price of a single one, and I'm 160 miles away from the store I bought them from...and with 13 year old tires on the car, I needed to do something (holy fuck, people can't take care of their cars for shit). The kicker is, we swapped and tested one tire on the front and rear passenger sides, and it didn't have an issue, but the driver's side perch is oriented differently and it causes rubbing, whereas the passenger side clears it no problem

Grinding the perch seems plausible, but then the spring itself might rub the tire. The perch indexes the spring into a fixed position, so I can't rotate it to make the coil clear that exact spot

All I could come up with besides dampers/coil-overs, is adding a camber plate and then adjusting the camber at the upper strut hole/spindle bolt, which along with a large enough spacer might clear the perch, but it seems like a bit of a hassle to fix such a silly issue
>>
>>16323727
A spacer could be a temporary solution, but it might look bad depending on how far out you need to push the wheel.

If you expose the spring by grinding the perch, then obviously don't grind at all, I was referring to grinding excess material (if any), not the functional part.

Have you tried playing with tire pressure? Maybe you can "fix" it by going a bit higher or lower without going too far out of the optimal pressure range.

I don't think a camber plate will fix the issue because the wheel will just follow the whole strut as if they were one piece and nothing would change regardless of how much caber you give it. A spacer should be enough unless you risk rubbing the fender with the tire

Like I said, the spacer would probably have to be about an inch wide to fully clear it, and at that point, the tire would easily rub the fender when going over bumps, and I'm not talking about the tiny "lip" around the wheel arch...but I'm not counting on the spacer alone solving the issue anyways

I'll see if I can deflate the tire enough to do anything. Maybe that+grinding off that itty bit of spring perch could do, all I need is about 1,5 mm of clearance, it seems. What I'm worried about is if it'll be stronk enough to hold up

I mentioned camber plates, but not alone. They would add camber to the strut+spring, but I'd negate the effect at the wheel by "pulling out" the top-most spindle bolt, which holds onto the strut. That would increase the negative camber on the strut while the spindle/tire would remain constant (if things are done correctly). I don't like the idea though, because the strut is obviously designed for a fixed camber...

The more I see it, the more it seems a different damper/spring will have to happen

>>
>>16324604
Yeah i get your point, if you plan on upgrading to coilovers anyway, then try your fix until you buy them, otherwise you should get the right tires.
I think the money would be spent better toward good tires than coilovers that you may not be interested into.

It sucks to waste good tires that you just bought, but it's better than risking a blown tire or playing with the camber like that.

Close-up of the problem area. On this generation of Camry's the brake light housing is attached only by an indent it fits into on the left, a plastic snap on the inside right, and the plastic attachment that connects to the hood. The car took a hit and the fender is indented by the single large dent you can see that is bending it inwards concavely.

Theoretically I only need to straighten it out enough to allow the parking light housing to be mounted on the hood attachment; so I might not need it to be perfect as much as just allow the housing a snug fit even if that means having to jam it in.

>>
>>16327729
How old is your battery? Sounds like it took a shit.

The thing to do is jiggle your battery connections. They get corrosion built up on the posts sometimes and moving them around breaks through the corrosion.
>>
>>16327741
That might be it. Can cold do that easily? It's 10f here now.
>>
>>16327743
Cold doesn't cause corrosion, humidity plus acid does.

What cold does do, is cause the chemical reaction in the battery to slow down, meaning you have less current available to turn the engine over. And a cold engine takes more current to crank than a warm one.

So, both those effects means any corrosion will have a more pronounced effect.
>>
>>16327743
tl;dr jiggle your connections if you can. If that doesn't work buy a new battery.

A thirteen year old, used car is never like having a brand new car. Like it says, it already needs wheel bearings and a steering rack (might be expensive). Who knows how it was taken care of/maintained, and given the modifications it has+the type of car it is, I'd bet it was beaten on. Never mind the new engine, because the transmission/clutch, brakes, suspension, chassis, electrics/electronics, and other bits could have issues of their own

Remember that cars are complex, and have many systems, and without knowledge on how they were treated and maintained during their life, or without knowing their current condition (which is pretty much impossible most of the time) it's risky to jump into things

Unless you are willing to take risks, you need information, and quite a lot of it

Lol. I am not even the same guy that started on you. Was just joking, weenie. The lettering actually looks really good. But you need a better camera for sure.

Normal paint markers that are half of that price.
It's not that they are expensive, it's that you were sold something that doesn't really exist, like "high end" HDMI cables

How does an engine with variable displacement work with a supercharger?
If the supercharger is pumping in X amount of air for 8 cylinders in operation, wouldn't that be way too much air to pump in to only 4 cylinders?
I feel like I'm missing something...
I'm also guessing that wouldn't be a problem for a turbo because the excess air would just get dumped at the waste gate.

Should I fork the money for a good quality impact wrench Or just keep using a cheater bar ?

It'll work fine. Last I knew, "variable displacement" motors just cut off fuel injectors when cruising, they didn't shut down the valve train for those cylinders or anything, so the supercharger will still be supplying air to all 8 cylinders, but only 4 of them will be getting fuel, so only 4 will fire.

To be a real variable displacement motor, they'd have to use something like Koenigseggs free valve or something and just leave all the valves open when there was no fuel going to the cylinders. If they actually did that, there would be problems with running boost on a variable displacement motor. In that case, if the OEM wanted to retain boost while in variable displacement mode (unlikely), they'd have to use something like a dual plenum intake, with one that closes off when the cylinders drop out. But, since variable displacement is normally used for fuel savings, chances are they wouldn't bother, as having boost while trying to get better fuel economy would be a bit pointless.

Chrysler 300C 2007 any good my mangs? I dont like it feels to luxurious just want to know more about it. Its 7000 euro feels like too low for it. Whats the catch. Is it faulty and requires high maintenence?

That makes sense. Appreciate the input. I guess in that case, you wouldn't bother to dump excess air through the waste gate on a turbo either.
