Came to /o/ awhile back looking for information about buying one of these. Got some helpful stuff, even though I doubt many believed I would. Went ahead and did it last week. All comments welcome regarding whether this was/wasn't a good idea.
>>
>>16279423
It's babbys first Ferrari. None of the scary engine out maintenance.

Bread on hood.
>>
>>16279423
>None of the scary engine out maintenance
I heard about that.
Still sounds like belt/clutch are mad expensive to replace.
>>
So what's the retail on one of those?
>>
>>16279469
I'm not sure about high mileage ones.
Low run anywhere from $80-$120K, or at least those were what I was looking at.
>>
>>16279423

Do you have three times it's value in expendable money?

If not, expect to be forced to sell it a two year timeframe.
>>
have you been able to insure it? I bet it's ultra rape.
>>
>>16279469
More than you can afford, pal.
>>
>>16279504
Well that sounds pretty fucked up.
This would be solely on maintenance costs? .

>>16279510
It was actually relatively cheap to insure. I do have two other vehicles on the policy, but still.
>>
Weird, just like the last 10 posters that just bought them, mysteriously they only have a stock image of the car
>>
>>16279549
I can understand why you'd think that, honestly.
Really I'm just lazy. And if I was really LARPing, I'd probably have picked something more current, like a 458 or F12.

>>
>>16279640

There, was that so hard?

I don't know much about manteinance costs but I congratulate you for getting a manual one, not only it should be more pleasing to drive but also it's likely going to be less clunky than the early 2000s attempt at a flappy-paddle gearbox. Plus, DAT GATED SHIFTER.

As much as I hate that faggot, you probably could get some info from Doug DeMierda's series of "hurr durr I got a 360 Modena" blog entries at Shillopnik. Anyways, why did you buy it? As an "investment" or do you plan on driving it frequently?
>>
>>16279668
>>16279692
Yeah, I heard the F1 system was shit in the 360's.

>>16279692
>was that so hard
It was harder than sitting on my ass, having my word taken at face value. But I get it, it's like claiming to be a trader on /biz/.
I watched his "why you can't drive it every day" shit, but fuck that, he's talking about having no other ride. I bought it because I always wanted one (okay, I wanted a 328, but they're old as fuck now). I didn't plan on driving it frequently, but I've put a fuckload on it since purchase.
Do you have one as well?
>>

>>
nice car. what's the retail on one of those?
>>
>>16279732
The F1 system is shit in every car, the 355 F1 is the worst conceived but it has it's charms as it's still very analog and has a throttle cable so you can rev match, so that leaves the 360 as the worst F1 (aside from the Maserati Coupe which is basically the same setup but they called it Cambiocorsa). A 3 pedal hardtop 360 is about the cheapest Ferrari you can run. Do you have any sticky interior pieces?

Should help in the long run.

I have found some patches, definitely the window controls. Maybe on the glove compartment too.
I also heard this happens over time, and it's not like this is anywhere near new.

>>
>>16280479
>Takes some getting used to.
No shit, I already find the cars who put the controls to the side of the gearstick to be uncomfortable as fuck, can't imagine how bad that is. The good thing is you probably don't use the windows much while driving a Ferrari, just when you get in it and when you get out.
>>
>>16280515
>you probably don't use the windows much while driving
True enough.
I'm used to driving with them down, but the speeds I've been hitting on the freeway make that shit kind of deafening.
>>
>>16280664
I wasn't just referring to that, I also meant that I don't see Ferraris as the kind of cars where you fiddle with the windows as you drive. It doesn't seem to be the kind of car you'd take for a relaxed slow cruise where you play with the accessories.
>>
>>16280725

Seems kinda low priority.

The 360s engine has to come out for service. It still has the dumb belts. The 430 was the first that could have the clutch changed without removing the engine.

Not sure why you'd want a 360 though. The good 3 pedals are way more than a perfect 3 pedal 355, and the 355 will hold its value. At a certain point a 6speed gallardo is better. Chicago Bentley or Lambo had an 06 black 3 pedal with 10 or 20k miles asking 110k. A 3 pedal 360 is 100k. Just my opinion, if you really got one I hope you really enjoy it. I'm sure it's fun.

For belts, or just the clutch?
>355
Never liked the look of them, despite Pininfarina. Plus, I'd probably be dealing with a 20 year old vehicle at that point. Appreciate your take. Wasn't aware a Gallardo could be had for a similar price (and your price on the 360 seems close to what I saw), but I like the look of a Ferrari better.

>>16280868
>not like a 360 is an investment level car
There were two posters arguing about that a couple weeks ago. One said they'd go up in value because of collectors, the other said that when younger people could afford them, they wouldn't give a fuck about owning a manual anyway, because they didn't grow up with them.
>>

does it cut off the lights when you shut off the engine at least?

No it doesn't, you do it through the firewall. Spyder you have to remove the top to get to it. You can do a clutch job on any F car without removing the engine. 348/355 is about the easiest clutch job in existence. Stop talking out your ass you have 0 idea what you are talking about.

Something about how they make most people wait years for a new one, unless you're willing to pay a premium over and above the sticker.
I think the explanation involved there just not being enough cars to meet demand, and so they have to reserve a certain number for the billionaire types that inevitably want the newest models.

Best part of the CS interior is all that red, only the Italians would go that nuts. Anyone who is ever considering buying or owns a normal 360 do not drive a Challenge Stradale, it will ruin the plain jane car for you because it shows you everything the car can be. For the normal 430 vs Scuderia the Scuderia is a bit nicer but doesn't exactly blow the original out of the water. For 458 vs Speciale I actually like well optioned normal 458s more, you aren't giving up any performance that you ever will be able to feel on the streets and the Speciale interior feels cheesy to me

True story, I bent the hood on one of those. One of our long time Infiniti customers had one as a weekend car and brought it to us for a state inspection. I popped the hood to check the brake fluid level as part of the safety check. The hood "strut" locked and I asked one of the older techs who used to work on Ferraris how to release. I thought he said just pull it down, so I used a little more force but it didn't unlock and bent the hood. Luckily we were able to bend it back and you couldn't tell the difference but I definitely felt physically ill after that and had to take a breather.

It's easy to do, it looks exactly like a normal strut but it's just a mechanical thing with a detent ball that you have to release by hand.

Here's my 348 story, I had never even seen one before, one came in, red 348TS, and I did an annual service on it, uneventful, car goes home same day. The next morning I see a red 348TS on a flatbed when I pull up, start stressing out because I never had a comeback. Start checking connections while it's on the truck (MAF sensor and exhaust temp sensor connections are so sensitive I've seen them cause no starts or terrible idle right after services), another tech comes out after awhile and I finally piece together it's not the same car, just total random chance an identical one happened to come in.
>>
>>16304557
Haha yeah its always scary when that shit happens, and a pretty odd coincidence that an identical one would show. Where do you work?

I rarely have comebacks, maybe 1 a year. Right now Im balls deep in the QX56 timing chain recall. Ive done over 100 of them, and a couple months ago somehow I overlooked a radiator hose clamp. Took a week for the hose blow off. Luckily nothing was damaged, no overheating. Just filled it back up with coolant. Another time I left an evap hose off, no big deal, just clear the code. So far those are my only comebacks for the timing chains.

why do you say this? i see on ferrarichat that people love driving them, the trans isnt as good as the 355 but aside of that its a great driving car...

i love that you can get one in the low 40s if you look hard enough. ive wanted a nsx for a decade now but for nearly the same money you can have this.
>>
>>16311441
I would much rather get the 348 than the NSX if I was you anon tbqh
>>
>>16311606
for sure, only concern aside of maintenance difference is how depressed will i be when something breaks, and shit WILL break.
>>
>>16308411
Alcantara also wears terribly, it hasn't been in vogue for that long but when these cars age it's all going to be smooth everywhere human body parts touch it and look terrible

>>16311441
It's not comparable to the 355 other than looking vaguely alike, the 355 is twice the car that a 348 is. 348s are riddled with fit and finish issues, especially the interior. They feel very cheap to me. 355s have their own issues but the driving experience is worth it on a well kept model. Mondials and 348s were dirt cheap forever for a reason, they've been propped up since nobody can afford anything else these days but they'll fall back to be reasonable levels. Even at $40k (which can only buy a trashed one these days) the service costs are the same as a 355, so in 10 years you can spend another $40k just keeping it on the road and looking half decent, so why not buy the better car?
>>
>>16311651
because the difference up front between the 348 and 355 is what a 1g viper could be bought for. 90% of the reason for buying the ferrari at all is to tool around in for head turns and to be the guy known as owning a ferrari. there's really no other reason to own that applies to 9/10 owners.
>>
>>16311707
That's just not how it is in the real world, sure there are some people that just had to have a red Ferrari of any kind and get a Mondial or 348, but that's a tiny, tiny fraction of buyers and not reflective of the normal demographic. According to an FNA survey 65% of Ferrari owners own more than one Ferrari.

>so why not buy the better car?
because "better" isn't objective. I'd get the 348 not because of price but because of style. To me, the only thing that beats a 348 is a Testarossa. A monospecchio at that.
>>
>>16311791
same could probably be said about most exotics. its an interesting form of collecting/investing as the cars really hold their value comparatively. and i think from a brand loyalty standpoint it's hard to go with much else. guy with a vette is going to buy a camaro? guy with the viper is going to buy a challenger? guy with the gt40 is going to buy a mustang?

if i can buy a 360 for 90k and the value holds well, gives me all i want assuming my bank account can absorb it, a 355 a few years later for *only* 70k aint no thang.
>>16311872

Nah, I almost said "retrofuturism" when I made that post but it's plain wrong and I'm glad I realized my mistake before posting. Retrofuturism is when you make something modern and futuristic but inspired in an earlier era. In cars, the trend started heavily with the Plymouth Prowler and lasts to this day in the form of the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Ford GT, among others

And I hear they're a giant pain in the ass to work on.
>>
>>16280925
why does this happen
>>
>>16325919
They aren't too bad to work on depending on how well kept it is, but you wouldn't be happy with one vs. a 360 if you are actually looking to drive the car, 308s/328s are cramped, didn't age too well, and not comfortable for a multihour trip. The prices they are fetching right now is retarded, it will fall again. The best deals out there imo are 550/575s but even they have almost doubled over the last few years. I wish I had the spare cash 5 years ago when they were dipping under 50k.
>>
>>16326427
Looks like lots of them are going for between $80-$100K.
That's kind of amazing, seeing as how similar mileage 360's are going for about the same, and are at least a decade newer.

Of all those cars you mentioned
355 is the best looking
328s have great lines but are very small so not that impressive to look at in person
348s are unique looking, not really my cup of tea but they are eye catching
360s are just plain vanilla, they aged ok and definitely don't look bad but you can go unnoticed in traffic especially if it's silver or white
The 430 front end is nice but the quarter redesign looks terrible to me. Spiders look much better than coupes to me

It's definitely cheaper, and maybe more reliable. But I could use the same argument for buying a Volvo.
Looks-wise, I'd say the 360 beats it to hell, and the less than second better 0-60 and 10mph higher top speed aren't enough to negate that.
