Looking at E46's, I know about the VANOs issues with them, but what about the AWD?

Found a decent one and I can probably get the price down a bit, is the AWD going to give me a headache?

opinions on tourings?

looking at a couple 2002's, both have a little over 80k miles.

I'm experienced with the M54 engines but not with e46's, i know i'd have to immediately start working on the cooling system and cltuch fan so it doesn't explode. also rear springs probably.

Anything important thats E46 specific that applies to these 2002's?

They're both non Xi 320's, basically the slowest m54 but thats fine, if all goes well i'd do an s54 swap someday.

I just got an E30 325is/5 and it's in pretty good condition, but the suspension does a few things that kinda worry me. When I'm going slowly and I push the clutch in, change gears, or let the clutch out, I hear a clunking sound that I think is with coming from my subframe or my differential. How can I check what is making the sound? I don't have a shop or anything to do work in, and I know that suspension bushings are a pretty big job.

Easily reclaimed/pretty clean E30s for for around $5k in my area.

Benchracing faggot here, I occasionally lurk /o/ for fun but I need advice from you guys.

I'm about to buy a BMW 525i for 2500€. First registered in 2000, driven 340000 km but the engine has 150000 km behind it. It comes from an old family friend I trust, so it's /probably/ not about to blow up on me. Driving it is pure bliss, I believe this is a steal.

This is my first ever car purchase, should I go for it? Is there something I should know about this model in specific?

Probably malfunctioned, 188k miles is the only thing that makes sense from the record. Nobody is going to roll an odo back to 5k miles to trick someone into thinking a base E30 is a magical barn find. The price doesn't seem to unreasonable, looks like it's a well cared for car.

Rust. Look harder. Inside fenders, floor pans, bottom side of rockers, trunk area, the piece from tail light to tail light right underneath the trunk. All surface rust will be three times bigger than the paint bubble. If it isn't too bad its worth close to the ask. Jew him down to $3500 on any issues and enjoy the ride.

You should be able to in your driveway, as long as you have the right tools. It would either be the trailing arm, or the entire rear suspension carrier as in pic related (carrier is 1, trailing arm is 8). Wouldn't know without looking, jack up the car and see if the entire carrier is bent. Hopefully it's just the trailing arm, and considering the angle the wheel is at it's probably just the arm. If you can, grab the part from a pick and pull, because grabbing new OEM will be expensive. Ebay should have some maybe around $200 plus whatever for shipping. You'll be fine grabbing used. If you can't find an E30 specific arm, you can grab one from an E36 318ti, since the ti is the only e36 that shares the same rear suspension as the E30.

Thank you very much. I'll read through that. It's also nice to see I'm not the only one who fucked up.
I looked at the carrier and it doesn't look like that's the problem, I think the hub is just bent on the trailing arm. There's one E30 and one ti at my local pull apart so I'll head down there some time and check it out.

Do you think it's OK to drive like this for a few days? I'm going to get new tires anyway.

Good job nitz. You're going to have to drop the subframe. You'll need 2 jacks and a full day to do it. Don't even bother if you're not going to replace the subframe, trailing arm and diff bushings while you're in there. The hardest part of all of this will be getting the subframe bushing aluminum out of the body (it's going to be corroded in there) and the brake lines/handbrake cables undone (also will be corroded solid).

>Don't even bother if you're not going to replace the subframe, trailing arm and diff bushings while you're in there.
I planned on doing this anyway, but I guess I can do it all then.
You mean that I only need to replace rubber and the one trailing arm, right? I'm not worried about getting bushings, but all the metal pieces seem really expensive.
Also I'm not worried about getting all the corroded shit out, I have a lot of penetrating oil and a lot of time.
>>
>>16279335
What'd you swap in? Yeah I wish I had a 6 banger in there but m42 is nice is you need something sturdy and Maintenance free. Since I fucked the old motor, to save money and time I just stuck with a new (used) stock motor. It's got new rails, guides, bearings and rods, and the cams been rotated for a little more bottom end. It also had a turner chip in it when I bought it i didn't even know. It certainly feels peppier freshened up.

If I was looking for an 840i I would be all over this one:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1994-BMW-8-Series-Coupe-/252668349323?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3ad4350b8b:g:hHkAAOSwzaJX~rIz&item=252668349323&rmvSB=true

He had it listed for $12500 I think. Would probably take 10 g.

E30 m3?

Given the e30s notoriety for odometers going out (although I fixed mine) I wonder if it'd be worth getting an antique auto tag for cheaper insurance (you can only put a max number of miles on per year) and kinda cheat the system. Unplugging the speed sensor from the diff will shut off odometer.
>>
>>16279224
For me, 633CSI > 840
I prefer the looks of the old 6 series to the 8 series, and I like the M30 more than the M6X. Plus, turbocharging a 633CSI (which I would do without a doubt) is much easier than turbocharging an 840, because the 840 engine bay is more cramped.

Hey /bmw/, i may be joining your club soon.
With a 523i e39 that looks damn tempting.
Leather, "Edelholz" and, from what i can see in the pictures, in a pretty good shape.
Is there anything special with the e39 i have to look at? It has the M52B25 engine which is pretty reliable, or so i heard, except for the Thermostat and the water pump. Anything else? Also babbys first rwd.
>>
>>16293776
nothing special or expensive about the 523i
a decently relible car (I know a guy with a 800k km one), not very slow by europes standards but is pretty bad on gas for city driving
>>
>>16293792
Thanks m8. Yeah, bad gas mileage(for european standards) is to be expected of a 6 cylinder. I hope to get around 10-11l/100km on average which i could afford no problem.

I do lots of Autobahn driving, how is the gearing? Will it be screaming at me or is it comfy?

>>
>>16293923
basically this
the z3 is fundamentally flawed by its really old rear suspension design. you can improve on it somewhat with springs and shocks but it's the achilles heel.
its also pretty heavy for how small it is, and you can sort of feel it
also good ones (year 2000+ 2.5 or 3.0i's in manual) are still kind of expensive, like 10 grand is a good price for one.

I find it funny that everyone loves to shit on the z3's rear suspension but they adore e30's. It's literally the e30's rear suspension because it fit for the size they were building rather than the e36 suspension like they used in the front.

Similar deal with the Z4M, the e46 M3's getrag wouldn't fit so they just used the regular ZF from the I6 Z4. Tho I must admit the getrag is much nicer.

Don't get a Z3 unless its an M roadster, or a Coupe (m or non m)

As much as i loved mine, and miss it; it had some serious flaws. Tramlining was the biggest, scariest one. Then there was the really poor interior quality. Everything squeaked, and both my seats and steering wheel had to be replaced at only 120k kilometers.

They don't really drive like a BMW should feel, and it's a big shame because i really prefer the design over the Z4.

I'm now aiming for an e46 touring or a Clownshoe if i can find one in my shithole country. (Apparently, you can't import them as of last year so i'll either have to hunt a clownshoe down or wait till they're 30 years old to import)

Well I went to the Pull-A-Part today and tried to take the trailing arm off with no luck. It was very rusted and I couldn't even get the bolts to budge after I got the nut off.

There was a guy there looking at the E30 who said that if I take it to a body shop they can just put it on an alignment rack and bend the trailing arm back into alignment. That would be good enough for me. Is he talking out of his ass or can the shop just fix it for me? I know there's no rear adjustment on E30s so once it's bent back that's the end of it, right?

There's this thing called a hammer, use it to knock the bolt out.

>just put it on an alignment rack and bend the trailing arm back into alignment.
What fuckery is this? I've never heard of a shop doing this in my life. First of all, how does this guy think he's going to put enough force on the trailing arm to bend it back? Second of all, you're talking about bending a major suspension part back after a serious impact. This is unsafe without thorough inspection for fatigue cracks and will definitely leave the arm weakened.
>>
>>16298145
>There's this thing called a hammer, use it to knock the bolt out.
There's about an inch of space where I would need to hammer. I tried hitting it with the side of a wrench because that's all I could fit in there and I had no luck. I also put a ton of penetrating oil on it and that didn't help.

>First of all, how does this guy think he's going to put enough force on the trailing arm to bend it back?
He said they had a tool to do it, i dont know dude.
>Second of all, you're talking about bending a major suspension part back after a serious impact. This is unsafe without thorough inspection for fatigue cracks and will definitely leave the arm weakened.

>There's about an inch of space where I would need to hammer. I tried hitting it with the side of a wrench because that's all I could fit in there and I had no luck. I also put a ton of penetrating oil on it and that didn't help.
That's because you need to *drop the subframe*. It's highly unlikely you'll ever successfully get a trailing arm out of an E30 without dropping the subframe. The thing has been in there for 30 years, it's not going to come out without a fight.
>>
>>16298184
>That's because you need to *drop the subframe*.
Well I'm not going to be able to do that in my garage so I guess I'll just live with a broken car.
>>
>>16298190
Oh come the fuck on, you don't need any special tools, just two floor jacks and a helper.
>>
>>16298194
How long would it take? It seems like a REALLY big job.
Usually I'm all for doing the work myself. I just don't feel like I'm ready to tackle something like this.
If I ordered a trailing arm on ebay do you think I could take it to a shop with a lift and just have them install it for me?
>>
>>16298205
It is a big job, it's going to take you a day. You have to disconnect the brake lines, unhook the emergency brake cables, knock the subframe bushings out of the body and clean the fractured aluminum from the mounting bosses. Sure you could take it to a shop, and maybe you'll get lucky and they'll be able to pry out the bolts and trailing arm without dropping the subframe, but chances are they won't even try and you'll get charged out the ass for it, it'll be a $500+ job to replace the trailing arm all related bushings. It's unwise to replace the bushings on one side and not the other, and it's unwise to not replace the subframe bushings while doing this job because I guarantee you that yours have failed.

Yeah, 10k could get you a decent condition, mid-high mileage M3. A lot of M3s at 8k when I was last looking around were at 250k miles, so the pretty clean one I got with 108k miles was a pretty nice find for 12k. Back in 2010, 10k got me a 77k miles auto sedan. Unless that is the most mint low mileage 328is, probably not more than 8k if it is perfect, but what are those chances? 47k miles is pretty damn low, perhaps it is worth it. Those low miles may go with a very clean car.

OR you could take your 7k and give a rough M3 a renewal on life with the other 3k and you'll have done your civic duty, or find a good 328is for 4-5k and just keep the extra in your pocket.

Both are great for FI if you want your car to be mental.

400 crank sure. I made 355 wheel with a jb4 and a little bit of e85. Could've mixed more e85 in and made some more power I think.
>>
>>16302638
the only shit bmws I can think of are the 2 series minivan and the X1
maybe the x4 too
>>
>>16302885
There's literally nothing wrong with the X1. It's the best small luxury SUV out there.
>>
HEY /BMW/

I was loooking into buying a used 2015 320i (not x drive)

is it a good one for daily driving? how is it in the snow?

also do I need to go to a bmw shop for maintenance or would any local shop that can service bmws do it?
>>
>>16303455
tbqh I don't think there is anything wrong with any of the X series except for the lack of fun factor (does not apply to the M versions though)

leaning towards the white one because the black one gives a risky vibe

yeah yeah i know

not many good manuals out there for the price. i think theres some salvage ones but idk, not many in socal anyway

the black car seems too good to be true, 66k miles in good shape for 3 grand. im going to look at the white one sometime this week

I see at least 10 E36 manual sedans in LA for under $3500
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/5908602546.html

They are bad enough as it is, add in a manual and they are almost worthless, just don't bother.

? are you saying the e36 is shit or what
>>
>>16305771
Sorry, *auto

If you get an auto trans E36 with over 100k miles there is no possible way you make it a year of daily driving without a major trans or cooling issue
>>
>>16305726
I picked up my manual '92 325i for hundreds less than that first car, and with nearly 40k less miles on it. Granted, I lived in Connecticut, and Bimmers are as common as Civics up there.
>>
>>16305787
thanks i was looking on orange county cl

how much would you pay for the e36 manual?
>>
>>16305786
They are just a plain jane boring car that isn't very reliable, there's a reason you can find them for peanuts everywhere

>>16305820
For perspective on craiglist for sale by owner there are 6 328s on Hartford Craigslist and 94 on LA craigs. There's no shortage of them in the LA basin.

>>16305821
Never only look in your area, cars have a great ability to move themselves under their own power. If you live in a major metro area you are going to needlessly spend more a lot of the time rather than driving a few hours outside the city. I wouldn't pay anything because I have 0 interest in an E36 sedan. There's lots of nice E30s in your area that would be a much more enjoyable car

Anything to watch out for in a 2012 528i?

Summary:
>automatic
>N20
>90k miles

Can this be a decent daily? Does it weigh too much for an N20 powerplant? Is it still more fun than a Corolla?

I think it's pretty ugly but can see myself falling in love, and I think it's worth a shot. Plus this CL listing looks cheap

Posting a pic of a 528i just so you can see what I mean by Ugly.

Why would you buy a 2L 5 series? What the fuck? A 3 series powered by the same engine will be better in every way.
>>
>>16305886
That slammed car is worth less than 0 dollars, they should pay you to take it. There's clean ones for $2k everywhere, if you see one already molested by a vapetard just close the ad. Why do you need airbags?
>>
>>16306016

>>
>>16305787
Nice out of context trash. It all depends on maintenance records, whether the fluid was changed or not. That really is the reason why they fail, because they are not properly maintained.

>>16305709
Of those two I would go with the Alpinweiß e36. Looks like the guy is on top of maintenance. Just a bit rough on the bumper but that isn't much to fix. No interior pics, though.

Whoever is the e46 is such a dipshit he can't even take a proper photo, obviously from the post you can tell he doesn't really care about the car much.

I'd probably go with the one heartbreaker posted, just replace the seats. But as he said, look around a bit more for yourself. You won't regret a 50 mile trip if it is for a car you'll actually want to be driving for years.
>>
>>16306837

Is that a sienna? Pretty rare colour.

Lots of options they had that you don't really ever see. I love my cosmos but BRG makes me drool.

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1517114-The-E36-Individual-Colour-Thread

And I crashed an e36 at around 50 mph. Spun into a wall so I guess airbag didn't deploy because it was not head on, but I was completely unharmed. Of course this is just personal experience, but I trust them enough to have gotten another.

So a 2009 E82 had dynamic xenon headlights from the factory. It's time to replace both and the price for even used units is 2-3 times higher than for regular stock xenon headlights.
Does anyone know if I can install regular xenon lights without any issues or I'm doomed to spend a fortune?

Would this be a good price on an M3 this clean? Where I live it's rare to find such a low mileage M3, or well any M3 tbqh. I prefer e46 but definitely would feel like I'd enjoy this. Just wondering from the expert /o/tists what y'all think

Looks pretty good, but for $20k I'd expect the body to look a bit cleaner, unless it is just the ground reflection making it look rough. Interior looks very nice. 76k is pretty low mileage. If it weren't on Hemmings it would probably go for $16k on BFC.

Lets just say, you might get a nice car on Hemmings but you aren't on Hemmings to get a deal. I remember when this M3 came up on Barrett Jackson and everyone on the forums was nitpicking at it not being as nice of a car for the price.

What would you evaluate it at if you don't mind me asking?

My valance is garbage and I'll give you that. But those aren't my rally wheels and tires. I have snow tires on my 14" bottle caps that are great for rallycross. As for mud flaps and lights, who gives a fuck? They aren't going to help me in any of the competitions I run.

I own a M106 and this is news to me. Normally the oil bar bolts loosen up and every 30k you have to adjust the valves. If a M30 had excessive cam wear, either it was from a lack of lubrication or poorly adjusted valve lash.
>>
>>16316359
>As for mud flaps and lights, who gives a fuck? They aren't going to help me in any of the competitions I run.
Mud flaps will help you not destroy the fucking paint and accelerate your car's inevitable rusting out. What the hell kind of competitions are you doing where night rally doesn't happen?
>>
>>16316433
Well princess I ordered springs and mud flaps from demon tweeks so don't get your panties in a wad. Also a lot of rallycross competitions don't do night events. I've only done one, and my brights were sufficient.

Here (near Stuttgart) there is a wide choice of stock, rust free and unmolested E36s for between 1200-2000€.

Granted most are 318 and 320 sedans, but we're talking shitboxes for daily use.

There are 318is and 318ti around as well, but they're more likely to be in a rather molested state.
