I wouldnt call it a POS but I dont like the way the previous owner did the pop up delete.

that being said its either spending $900 bucks on jet stream fixed head lights or just buying and re installing pop up headlights. Not really in a rush as I dont plan on driving this during the winter.

First miata, won't be the last. Rust in all the usual spots but I've upgraded a few thins since I bought it:

- Koni yellow struts w/ Flyin miata springs and top hats
- hard dog hardcore roll bar
- Sparco Sprint Vs
- Sparco 6-point harness
- Nardi deep corn, 330mm
- NRG quick release hub
- LED cluster gauge upgrade

I've also got a set of Skyline ceramic turbos that need rebuilding, considering boosting it next winter.

Pic when I bought it

On my hardtop? Yeah

On my wheels? Kind of. I had 3x 17 mm nuts on each wheel and 1x spline drive. Didn't really expect anyone to steal them, they aren't worth a whole lot in their current condition. They were some 14" rpf1s with some curb rash/a minor bend. They just looked flashy I guess.

Retards don't realize 14" rpf1s aren't even worth anything compared to 15"+

pic related is my last pic with these wheels :(

then some wider wheels
for street use 15x6,5-7,5 is fine, for track use 15x9

how much do they cost?
>>

$400 used for 14" without tires
$700-800 used for 15"
$1300-1500 used for 17-18" roughly from what I've seen. Its probably regional though idk.

oh wow didnt realize this board had a miata general, newfag here i have a few retarded questions, sorry for shitting up the board with a pointless thread.

>tldr: i kind of know about cars but not really, want to get a miata for minor track events just to have fun and have a reliable daily driver

found this beauty locally for $1900 with an extra set of tires/rims, is there any reason not to buy this?

i realize with a 1.6 i wont be making too many friends at the track, but i mainly just want a fun car thats cheap to fix.

('91, MX-5, 100K miles)

the owner says the car runs, but the airbag lights blink, which looks like there might be a controller issue? but i think thats only a $100 fix? (and some minor body work needs to be done)

i can potentially throw $2-300 at the car every month.

The extent of my mechanical ability pretty much stops at bleeding brake lines so I'll probably have to skip the first one.

The second I think I can handle. Is FlyinMiata generally considered a good place to shop or nah?

Also, I plan to drive this car through the winter. Will my new wheels be conducive for winter tires?
>>
absolute newbie here with maybe a stupid question

I've noticed the brake fluid line end that connects to the brakes has a small hole
How do i know when i've tighten this up enough so the hole aligns?

I'm also changing my brake fluid. Current fluid is blue, new stuff is orange. Is color mixing alright or do i need to completely flush?
>>
>>16272629
I have absolutely no idea what your first question is. A brake line runs from the master cylinder to the caliper. Is this hole on the line or the caliper?

Assuming you bought the same type of brake fluid (DOT4), then yes, that is fine. Some autists will recommend to bleed the entire system first and start from scratch but that is retarded advice. Just keep adding your new brake fluid and bleeding until the old is completely out. Not only do you not have to introduce air into the system this way, but you actually strengthen your current pressure.
>>
>>16272713
It's DOT3 the orange stuff i'm putting in. Does this mean i've gotta do a complete flush?

I'm talking about the brake line screw that connects to the caliper. It's got a 2 way hole that i'm assuming i have to line up someway. Is it a number of turns thing?? Like i said, it does sound pretty stupid

>>
>>16272011
I'd take it.

As long as its as good as it sounds in the description. You could even take out the steering wheel/airbag and get a much better wheel for ~$150-200 anyways.
>>
>>16272747
No, you don't have to do a complete flush because you are literally going to pull all the old fluid out anyways during your bleed. You are only temporarily mixing them which is fine. Hell, you can even mix them permanently even if you want. All it will do is equalize the specifications of each type of fluid (mainly boiling point)

Post a picture. I don't know what you're talking about. If you're talking about the circular end of the brake line with the hole on the inside, then no, you don't have to line that up with anything.
>>
>>16272827

>>
>>16272846
>>16272947
Haha shit have another question
With current circumstances, Since clearly i might have to mix fluid, the fluid i'm draining to get rid of bubbles, is it a bad idea to put it back in?

Little note, the brake line has been open for like a week and a half straight before i got to this point.

From what I've seen it's the internal battery or some shit on the airbag computer that goes bad after 20something years. Not worth fixing imo. Everyone just unplugs the airbag light. Be careful when taking off the gauge hood if you do decide to remove the light. If it's the original cover it's 100% ready to break at any moment. They get brittle as fuck.
>>
>>16272021
If they salt the roads where you live I would not drive your car at all. Looks too clean to have it start rusting to shit. If not but it still snows then just put winter tires on the stock wheel and get good summer tires on whatever wheels you get. 15x8 +20to40 fits good without having to roll fenders and do other shit.

FM is alright and they have almost everything you need there but shop around still. Sometimes their prices are higher than other places. MossMiata is good too but same thing goes for them. MiataRoadster and REV9 Autosport are also good.

Don't listen to the other retard. Get carwell products spray. It's a waxy penetrating oil that you reapply every year. It's what the leafs use but it's called krown in the great white north.
Rubberized undercoating makes cars rust more.

This happened to me when going on a 300 mile trip, my water plug broke and antifreeze went everywhere. I got the car running now but Google cursed water plug miata and you'll know what I'm talking about. Check that and then the general stuff. I would just check your oil before the trip and bring a quart of it just incase but when you get back replace it

I'm not electric savvy either but maybe you should check the fuses? It would be weird how turning on one thing stopped another thing from functioning

hey guys, this might seem like a silly question but it's something that is really fucking up my day.

when you engage the clutch, should you actually be moving the heel of your foot forward (pushing it in) versus just pressing it like you do with the gas?

reason I ask is because the back of my shoe keeps getting fucking caught in the rugmat when I let off the clutch and it's fucking my day up

Looking to get my first car and first miata @ 27 years of age. since I was a kid they were always a car I enjoyed seeing around the streets. Otherwise I'm not really a car guy.

I've always used hand me down cars and have always avoided NA/NB miatas because I come from a family who always had the attitude of buyign new and old cars are going to be in rubbish condition.

if I fuck up my used car purchase and the condition isn't as great as I would have hoped would they always be salvageable? Mind you I never worked on a car before and don't know much since a car has always been a point a-b appliance to me.

But yeah say if a car has never been in an accident would they always be restorable?

If I get this car I plan on having this as my only car I ever buy since I already have a auto 4 door sedan for passengers

Why, it's a genuine question

Say if I had the money to buy a ND miata but I prefer the look of an NA/NB, would I be able to get an NA/NB, but put in the difference it would cost to buy a ND. would I ever get the Na/NB in Super clean/like new condition.

or will it always have problems no matter what. Like I said I come from a family who always hated the idea of buying a new car

Just maintain the car. Check out Miata.net. They will have buyers guide, knowledgeable people to answer questions, and you can probably even find some one to look at a car with you.

There's also tons of tutorials and troubleshooting threads.

Primarily, find one without any rust or at least significant rust. Definitely no signs of wrecks.

Motor is the next important issue.

Finally transmission and differential.

Lastly cosmetics.

Rust is mostly not worth it to fix, especially if it's beyond the normal rocker and wheel well rot. So just avoid it like the plague.

Spend 20 minutes crawling around the underside of the car with a flashlight. Poke anything that looks like rust and see how weak the metal is, if there's even any left.

The rest of the car is pretty reasonable to fix or replace.

Seriously though, get over the myth of new cars. The only people that believe in that bullshit likely don't do the proper maintainence to keep a brand new car in tip top shape.

You literally just pay tens of thousands to have the car drop by 3-5 grand the moment you pull it off the lot.
>>
>>16284651
Your family sounds retarded desu. Cars are very straight forward, especially miatas. A flawless NA or even NB is pretty hard to find so just come to terms with the fact that it will have some imperfections in the paint. Avoid rust and you'll be fine. These are reliable cars
>>
Where abouts should I be looking for rust since I have never bought a used car.

Will it last forever if I maintain it and eventually rebuild the whole engine when it's required?

how much would an engine rebuild cost anyways and when could I expect to need to do one?

Rebuilt motor isn't too high a cost really, especially if a DIY job. Easier to swap in a new one a build up your old block. Probably won't be necessary until mid 200k and up mileage if moderately maintained, right guys?

Just research before you buy or attempt any modifications and you should be fine. Find your local Miata club folks too. They'll help you out!
>>
I'm thinking about buying a second hood and having an Itasha style wrap made for it. Would anyone know of some place to have that done? I'd like to use this image to have it made, but not just print this image out and stick it on a hood. I want to have a little bit more done to it to make it more creative, but I lack the creativity to do it myself. Even if I just had the vector file made, I'm sure I could find a local shop to print it out for me.
>>
>>16285132
I'm sure some drawfag somewhere on here or another board would be glad to make something up.

I'd give them pictures of the equivalent hood for some perspective on filling out that space too so they know what they're working with though.

Is there any point of getting an NA if I don't know how to work on cars?

How often will I be having trouble with them? Can anything always be repaired or is there a point where it will be beyond fucked
>>
>>16285984
Most of the things that break on miatas are things that the average diy guy could repair. The major mechanical components are all pretty sound if you do your maintenance (if you get a '92+ long nose crank)

As for repairs I've done on my car in the last year I have
>replaced clutch master and slave cylinder
>replaced crank angle sensor
>Replace leaky output shaft seal and axle seal
>Rebuild shifter mechanism (elective repair)
>>
>>16286002

Do you need expensive set of tools to do such repairs?

Also for NAs and NBs are there more particular years/badges/series to aim to get?

All this talk about wheels getting stolen has me nervous as shit.

This mourning on my way to work, I noticed that my driverside left wheels made a thumping noise as I started to drive my car. First reaction was my wheel bearing went out again, and I was too late to bother with it, and decided to drive to work slowly anyways.

As I was driving to work, someone stopped besides me and told me to park on the side, I told him why and he was telling me my lug nuts were falling from the car and all the wheels were shaking. and lord and behold, all my of security lug nuts were stripped to fuck and some were missing.

Someone tried to fucking steal my wheels and were inexperienced at it, to the point where they destroyed most of the security bolts and just bailed. Now keep in mind, I live in a mainly black/Dominican neighborhood, so not even the thugs are good at what they do for a living.

anyways, I was scared shitless realizing I drove half an hour with 1-2 lug nuts on each wheel.

First, the ND is fucking magical. The RF coming next year is sexy as fuck, too.

That said, I have a NB and it's quite fun (even with me being shit at everything, more on that in a minute). I turbocharged it, added supporting modifications, suspension, and have a set of wheels and tires for special circumstances (currently have Altimax Arctics on my RPF1s because I don't give an fuck). A good NB is a fun, simple experience while being modern enough. While certainly not fast, if you have tight, curvy roads nearby you will have all kinds of fun. Also: autocross.

>my current problem
So I fucked up and had to change my wheel lugs and nuts. Now I've got one hell of a speed-dependent clunking noise that occurs under acceleration and occasionally deceleration. It is very light to nonexistent under very light load/constant speed. It goes away with left-hand turns. There is no play until the half-shafts. I'm going to triple-check all the bolts and nuts for the rear suspension and brakes and then rotate the driveshaft to check its U-joint. The new lugs and nuts are tight and properly-torqued. Ideas?
>>
>>16286020
All metric wrenches and sockets from 5mm through 24mm (and I think there's one larger nut/bolt somewhere too), with a few wrench duplicates/stubby versions. The yellow fuel line disconnect tool. JIS screwdrivers. PBlaster/penetrating lubricant (not KY, jackass), anti-seize, high-temp thread sealant, dry lubricant (for ignition/locks), narrow chisel (for hubs if you ever have to do them), malet(s). Jack (low, low profile) and jack stands. 1/2-in drive torque wrench. Work light(s). Metric hex keys. That will cover literally everything except engine, transmission, and differential internals.

>likelihood of it being a lemon

Get this thought out of your head man. This is whole "lemon" thing is just a meme made up by people that do not know what they are talking about. I would even go as far to say that the value of extensive service records is largely overrated for the same reason. There are literally two components that matter in the car: the motor and the transmission. Everything else is easily replaceable and likely will have to be replaced at some point regardless throughout the life of the vehicle. Any serious problems with the car are going to almost certainly manifest themselves during the process of simply turning it on and driving it around the block. If it turns on, shifts through the gears, it's probably fine.

IDK what your market is like but this is p much the price of that shit in my area (a bit expensive here):
>Rota Grid V 15x8
'Bout tree-fiddy, ~$400-$600 with the tires if they're in decent shape.
>Complete aftermarket exhaust system
Depends on brand or if it's completely custom. By "complete", I assume that includes the header as well. Mine cost me $700 brand new (cost of shipping included, which is expensive af). Rarely see anyone selling exhausts here but when I do they generally seem to sale for ~$300-$400 for a complete system.
>F1 style mirrors
Try $100...
>Ducktail spoiler
$100-$150.
>Hardtop (not Mazda)
In pic? Looks like the OEM top to me, and if it isn't, doesn't matter much because tops are still hard to come by. They always fetch for $1000-$1200 and get snatched up within minutes of an ad for it popping up online.

Those tires are shit and those wheels are heavy as fuck for the Miata. 7 lbs heavier per wheel than OEM, IIRC. And yeah he's evidently a shit driver.

>What we're your overall impressions?
Less of a "muh pure driving experience" which the NC was also criticized for. Unlike the NC it's still a fantastic sports and the interior/power upgrades more than make up for a small loss in muh feels.

One thing I noticed is the bite point in the clutch is approximately 10 atoms away from the floor; almost stalled multiple times because of that

>>
>>16299046
>Unlike the NC it's still a fantastic sports
i don't get what you mean by this

anyway, i had a different impression when i drove the ND (and i've owned both an NB and NC). i find the NB and NC quite similar to drive (stock), but the ND felt completely different. it felt more rev-happy (even though oddly it has the lowest redline of all 3), and happier to dart around (albeit with some body roll). i liked the lighter steering and light throttle and clutch pedals compared to the other two cars.

interior-wise, my NC is pretty close to the ND with the only major difference being lack of LCD screen. my old NB on the other hand was really basic compared to the NC/ND.

i like the ND a lot but by the time prices have come down to where i'd consider them to be more reasonable i'd probably be looking at something more powerful.

2J SCs can be found already manual, though if you plan to bump up hp in any way. Pretty much all manual Lexus with the 2J got fairly weak transmissions, though appropriate for stock applications you'll want something stronger (common mod for both SC and IS/Altezza is to yank one out of a Supra) if you're going beyond that
>>
so after investing in a 9/18 8 point and some kroil, I managed to do my much needed diff/tranny fluid change. so like everything with this car, the maintence was lied about and much worse then I though it would have been.

should I be worried that my tranny fluid was solid fucking black with what looked like bits and chunks of metal shavings on it, and a very awful smelling fluid coming from my diff?

btw, fucking redlines amazing, butter smooth shifts for days. Still gotta do the shift turret tomorrow
>>
>>16299701
Gear oil always smells like shit, so no worries on that front. The fluid is fucking disgusting though, as long as you changed it though, it should be fine. Depending on how many miles are on the tranny, a small amount of metal shavings aren't uncommon, the plug is magnetic so most should have been stuck to it. If you have large chunks, then yeah you could be looking at some issues down the line, although you'd notice problems already (hard shifts, slipping out of gear, grinding noises)
>>
>>16299722
well the shifting wasn't perfect, the shifting when it was cold started was really rough, but is usually a little bit hard only on the first and fifth gear.

Thankfully, no gear grinding or slippage. I'll be completely surprised if there is little or any turret oil left on the poor shifter tomorrow, I hope replacing that fluid makes the 1st gear changes smoother.

It makes a decent difference, but the issue I had with mine was the actual bushing on the shifter was worn to shit. Replacing that made the car go into gear so easily I thought i hadn't pushed the shifter in properly and I was just moving it around.

Serious question, why do people use steelies on winter beaters? I get that they're cheap, but won't they rust? If so, why not get some oem 14 alloys and use those instead?
>>
>>16305128
steelies are dirt cheap, cheaper then OEM 7 spoke or daises.

also the 89 miata technically had steelies as its OEM wheel, and boy were they ugly.
>>
>>16305128
Good question. Id imagine they do rust. Probably a good idea to get some factory wheels like you're talking about, but i just bought these steel ones with new winter tires on them already. that's the main reason i went with them.

P.S. How dare you call my car a winter beater! It is my only car! Im so afraid of rust with the amount of salt they put on the roads here in Maryland. Im going to be washing it off daily. Well i suppose it is my winter beater haha even though im going to try not to treat it as one, but i have no choice.

If you can't even read an amazon listing, you definitely can't build a shed.

A true pole barn (which is essentially what you're imagining this fanciful amazon shed to be) is at least a few thousand dollars used.

Apart from the walls, roof, and door, you still need a concrete foundation our pylons of some sort to prevent the thing from flying away and totaling your car in the first thunderstorm.
>>
>>16290178
If it's a rusted out shit box, sure.
If not I'd keep it.

Between frame rust and ignorant teenagers and manchilds totaling the things left and right because they can't into driving technique there's less and less of the good ones left that don't need a full restoration.

With their popularity as a cheap, fun, and easily fixed platform only increasing by the year, there will only be more rusty examples and totaled cars with almost impossible to fix frame damage.

Pro tip:
Unless you own the body shop that fixes the frames of wrecked cars I wouldn't buy a totaled vehicle or rebuilt title unless it was flood damage or worth more in parts.

The myth that body shops can bring something like that into alignment unless they are experts with lasers and top notch machines is ludicrous.
