Wanting an AMC edition

>Post your classic cars and trucks
>Blog about electrical gremlins
>Pray to the carb gods
>Argue about Mopar vs ferd vs chebby
>Bench race cars and builds we'll never experience

Last thread hit limit so time for a new one.

Hopefully I can sell a couple of my cars and get a Rebel or Javelin for this spring. Maybe have it at the next Dirty Jersey meet.

Depends on the car; on my Chrysler, it might be a screw and a wire, or I may have to change the alternator as well.

On Ford products, you often have to replace the distributor itself.

So I'm really liking the idea of a boosted 5.3. I would leave it n/a for awhile though, can't imagine it making less power than the 350 now so I wouldn't be in a rush.

Although I do have some questions that I am far to embarrassed to ask because of how retarded they are, retaining to the ECU and tuning, I'll figure them out after more reading but I'm pretty fucking enthused right now, haven't felt this way since I first got the car.

I couldn't tell you what I've learned so far about this shit but I'm feeling a lot more confident about it now, its not as scary as I thought it'd be but I'd say I'm still a retard

Either one is going to be a pain in the ass. A bodies are not built for big motors. One you just have the added complexity of fuel injection.

I'm pretty sure modern hemis still use the same bolt pattern as old mopars though.

>>16276845
Neat. Thanks for the tips this will help make the build a little bit easier. I think I'm just going to go with an inline electric fuel pump instead of a mechanical one.
>>
>>16276986
you'll need to run a fuel pressure regulator in that case.
>>
>>16277130
Even if it is a low pressure?
>>
>>16277442
yes. even if the box says 6 psi, more often than not it's underrated and the pump will cause too much pressure, which will overcome the needle and seat, which will flood the carb.

If they have laws to preserve buildings, why not a ban on willful destruction of America's automotive history?

It's not like there are that many people who would be affected.

All I'm saying is a cap of 25 years; like they have for classic registration.

Many of them are of debatable historical importance as well, yet they're preserved.

Because they don't take just historical importance into it. Most of those buildings are of architectural importance if they aren't important otherwise.

Yeah, some of those are of dubious importance. But, the only requirement you have for a car to be considered a classic is being 25 years old. There are fucking Saturns that are 25 years old at this point. Not to mention there is a massive community devoted to preserving these cars. These houses and places are protected by the government because it isn't feasible for the average citizen to protect them. If you don't think some developer would come along and demolish anyone of those houses to build a McDonalds if they had the opportunity you're delusional
>>
>>16280638
And I'm not saying that every car should be saved; only proposing a system that recognizes that classic cars, like the early '60s Imperials they were wrecking, should be saved.

Slant sixes... aren't that great. The 225 has a 4" stroke and hardly any counterweight on the crankshaft. And the oil pump gears have lubrication issues (kek)
And you have to live with the terribly unequal intake manifold (or order one with super long runners from Australia)

The 225s made after 1981 use the same tappets as the LA V8 so converting one to use hydraulic lifters is easy as fuck.
>>
>>16281647
As cool as it sounds, and I've thought about doing it myself, I just can't justify it. You can build a v8 that makes double the same horsepower as it costs to build an i6. Unless you want some kind of bastard turbo project, but that's a fuckload of fabbing as well

Nigga E85 is a tier A fuel for daily use. Fix your rotten old fuel system.

I wish I could get it at the pump, because I could build an engine a full 3 points of compression higher and make mad power and still daily it.
>>
>>16285583
>less MPG
>less power overall

You'll get more power and more mileage out of an engine with the equivalent octane rating in gasoline. e85 is just the oil industry's greediness in action because it happens to be cheaper to produce.
>>
>>16284022
Well I figured I'd look for a Javelin after I sell a couple of my current projects. Land Rover is for sale now. Figured I'd see if I can find one for around $7500 max, but I'd have to see what's out there near
>>
>>16285619
You're not wrong and, to elaborate on that, you can't measure E85 by standard Octane ratings since it has a very high latent heat dissipation rate; this may be of use in race setups where you try to cool the engine as much as possible, but it also degrades at a much faster rate than standard gasoline because it will cause a layer of water to form; in addition to being highly caustic to conventional fuel lines, diaphragms, and the likes. For many older cars, there are no options for readily converting them to these systems, no is it commonplace in rural areas.

It would be worth looking into if you intend to build a turbo or supercharger setup, as it provides better boost pressure, but it is worse in a daily driver setup as you will see a 10 to 15 percent decrease in fuel economy vs. standard blended ethanol gas and a 20 to 25 percent decrease versus nonreformulated gasoline.
>>
>>16285885
>10 to 15 percent decrease in fuel economy

E85 has ~72% as much energy per gallon as gas.

But since ethanol loves to bond with water (look up azeotrope) it also cools the shit out of the intake air stream and combustion chamber. That's also why it eats the shit out of gas tanks and fuel lines.
>>
>>16285885
I should further clarify; carburetors use an aerobic system; that is, there ia almost always contact between the air and the fuel system; partially as a means to prevent buildup of fumes, but mostly due to the simplicity of the systems. When E85 is in prolonged contact with moist air; usually in the span of a month or two, the resulting mixing will form a mild acid, which will eat away at all the nonprotected components of the fuel system. In a classic, this would be the steel tank, the steel lines, and the aluminum of the carburetor itself.

To me, any performance benefit that would be gained from switching to E85 are offset by the fact that I could throw a larger carb, more aggressive cam, free-flowing intake, and do some head work to my car instead and get better net results.
>>
>>16285896
I'm aware of the power difference; I was going by the standard numbers that you see in a flex fuel vehicle when you run E85 versus 10 to 15 percent ethanol pump gas versus nonreformulated.

I could rely on the data and science of power and combustion differences, but it's easier to go by real-world figures and, to quote Wernher Von Braun, “One good test is worth a thousand expert opinions.”
>>
>>16284394
Drum brakes basically work by forcing two shoes to pivot out and grind against the hub.
>>
>>16285904
>tfw have to travel 16 miles to find a station that sells non-ethanol gas
>tfw no way to tell if it truly lacks ethanol
This is one reason why i want to give up on carburetors.
>>

should I buy a 403 block and build it up a little bit to throw in my sleeper buick sedan

or should I just keep the 307 that's already in it until it blows and then rebuild it up with a little pep to still get some sleeper credit?

the 403 block is about 300 bucks, and an hour drive away if I wanted to go that route.

That's not how you spell V8 Vantage
>>
>>16293431
Will you need to change transmissions?

Also it's probably a smog 403 which is kind of lame, but if you wake it up down the road they have decent potential

>>

If you cam a vortec 350 and put some headers, valve springs, and a better intake on you'll make well over 270

>>16293597

Short block is not a runnable engine. I think you mean small block.

That said, GMs big blocks aren't that big.
>>
>>16293733
there's a 403 block staring me in the face on CL right now, and I haven't seen a 350 olds on craigslist in the months I've been looking.

multiple spare 307's though.
>>
>>16293744
Id go big over little. Those smog motors are junky tho, you're going to have to get higher compression pistons, probably new valve springs, better flowing heads and a much bigger cam if you want to think about building power out of a smog 403.
>>
>>16293778
I planned on a full rebuild, including upgraded cam, and heads at the least. Trying to get bang for the buck, but I still want to keep it quiet and under the radar.
>>
>>16293795
Yeah I feel that. Maybe try finding out what compression ratio it has, but odds are you're not making much power with anything less than like 8.75 compression

Cheap, fairly reliable British sports car, so it'll go around corners fast. Not as performance oriented as a Triumph but are appointed nicer. They built a crap ton of them so they are easy to find, and parts are cheap and easy to get as well. You could almost build a complete car just from the available new made parts.

On my Valiant, the cabin heat doesn't seem to work all that well...the head needle barely reaches the first line from the coldest end of the gauge when the engine's running, and the air is only decently warm when its been slow-idling for 20 minutes, and cools down once moving. Is this just a bad (or missing) thermostat or something else?
>>
>>16296763
I'd say a missing thermostat.
>>
>>16296870
That's what I was thinking, the Mustang was the same way, and would ya have it, no thermostat

>>
How comfortable are classic cars compared to modern cars?
>>
>>16297225
That's going to depend on what it is and its condition. As an example, I've been in some First Gen Mustangs that were loose, noisy, drafty things while others have been just as tight, quiet, and snug as a modern car.
>>
>>16297225
Late '70s luxury barges, for example, are atrocious in the handling department, but are some of the comfiest the cars ever built.
>>
Would a Slant 6 having 2v carb make any difference with replacing the exhaust manifold?
>>
>>16297573
in what way?
>>
>>16297586
As in being the correct shape for them to fit together
>>
>>16297573
Not unless there was a specific version that had a 2V carb where the exhaust was also different. Good chance the ones for that vehicle application are all identical though.
>>
>>16297589
The only thing that matters is the intake manifold, and you can't really fuck that up because all /6 intake manifolds bolt on the same.
>>
>>16297591
Speaking of, how rare were the /6 with 2v carb in Valiants? Almost all parts stores and websites only have 1v available when you select the 6 for engine, which is not a good thing when looking for carb parts

The Valiant ended production in 1976 IIRC. You might be better off looking under a Dodge Monaco or Plymouth Volare.
Or a '77 Dodge D150 pickup lol
>>
>>16296763
Missing thermostat and/or your clutch on your fan not disengaging.
>>
>>16297647
>Why not just get a v8 mustang
Because Ford doesn't make an engine that can go 300k without even removing the valve cover.
>>
>>16297661

Dropped.

I've got a 300, even if you don't have to remove the head, no engine is maintenance free.

>>16297863
Reverse flow engines tend to do that. Unless you imported a 265 though I wouldn't bother

it's not about Jalopnik, it's about everyone who has owned a /6 that can attest to it's invulnerability.
>>
>>16297926
I have a 300. You're argument is invalid. Regardless of how stout the engine is, it's 40 to 50 tears old and things will wear out, seals will need to be replaced and tolerances will go out of spec

Just because your 225 runs with massive blowby doesn't mean it's unbreakable and immortal
