Been looking at cars along the lines of a Mk2 Golf or an EG hatch. Can you think of any alternatives to these? You know the drill...FF layout, less than 1.8L, etc. We get cucked by insurance here.

Maybe a 6K Ibiza or 6N Polo GTi?
those had "hot" engines below 1,8l

shut the fuck up and buy a Fiesta.

Mk1 Mx5 and AW11 MR2 are both fairly cheap and have decent insurance if you go on a classic policy

Just buy a fucking Fiesta, get a year or two of no claims, stop being 18 and suddenly enjoy being able to insure fun things like MR2s or WRXs.
i always wanted a Peugeot 205 gti, is that an option for you?
heh ;-)

Even worse
Been driving for 10 years and still driving economical shit boxes.
I need to stop saving for boring stuff like houses and buy something that doesn't make me want to off myself.

+1 for fiesta

BMW with an M42 engine. That would be E36 318i (the early ones, latter have a 1.9 engine). A coupe 318iS is probably the best.

Agreed. I guarantee you won't be able to insure anything remotely interesting as a first car (assuming you are 17) and even if you do, it isn't worth the money.
Why piss thousands down the drain on a crappy old Golf / Civic when you can wait until you have some no claims bonus and afford to get something good that will cost a fraction of the price.
I know I sound like a buzz kill but it just isn't worth getting something moderately interesting straight off the bat.
